Doubtful but I really don't know. What I do know is that there has been A LOT of reports of problems with the 1440p panels (not only related to Alienware).

How do games look at a lowered resolution on a 4k screen?

I'm thinking of just settling on a 1070 with a 4k screen. Which can barely handle games at that res, but everything else would be fine.

The brightness and color saturation is better on the TN-WVA panel than the standard IPS. And there's practically no light-bleed.

The downside, is that it consumes more power, so battery life will decrease. It's always about compromise with Alienware.

So the 17" does not have the same problem as the 15" where the light bleed is not due to the panel itself at all but by the bezels putting pressure on it (faulty manufacturing)? I verified this myself on the 15" before I sent it back by simply removing the bezel which solved 95% of the problem. Ie hade nothing to do with the panel at all.

There will always be this issue present on almost any display. The light-bleed is much less in comparison to the IPS. That's all I'm saying.

It's hit or miss with Alienware these days.

My point here was that there wasn't anything wrong with the LCD panel, it was the mounting of it. That is not to say that there might not be other problems with it or that for the 17" there could be another story, but at least that was true for my now returned 15" R3.

I'm having serious headaches dealing with Dell customer service over chat. They keep disconnecting me if I don't reply in literally 3 minutes, while they take over 10 to get back to me. Spent an hour with a rep just trying to get in my configuration, and she still wasn't able to do it. Anyone have any advice on how to deal with these people? How do I get the best discount possible on a system?

It takes forever man on chat and once you get your order "complete" they try and sell you on insurance and other things if you opted to to get them. It's a pain in the butt, but you have a chance of getting a great deal. Be patient and I wish they had a chime when their reps respond if you're not in the chat.

Will the Samsung 960 pro work on my alienware 15 r1? My laptop has a M.2 Sata III port.
Obviously it will not be able to use it full speed in terms of sequential read/write, but I want to already buy it, as my current ssd is rather bad now, and When I buy a new laptop I will heave it ready in hand.

EDIT: Nevermind. Ports are actually different so it can't be done, had to look better before posting this. sorry

Well I did use a 15% off coupon for being military. So that would drop the price down to close to what I paid. I would ask them for a 15% off coupon or at least a 10% one if that wasn't included in your price.

if you have a best buy near by go check it out.

if you mainly game you should be fine with, its just a lot of us are used to IPS panels with the better quality.
they could of used a g sync ips panel like msi did

Seriously! I would send mine back in a heartbeat if I could get the FHD screen with the 1080 GTX and 6820HK. Isn't there already a FHD G-Sync screen that they can pair it to? I mean it would be a beast for at least 3 years and could play all games at max for a long time.

Yes, I've seen several people post in this thread that they don't really notice the issue with the lines unless they're really looking for them. Many didn't notice them until they read about them in this thread and have been generally happy with it.

There is a small pond called The Atlantic between me and Best Buy unfortunately :)

I need something that can also work for productivity use (software development) and occasional gaming. When I game I usually want something bigger than 17" anyways.

I don't mind loosing the GSync either, in fact, I would prefer it as I would almost never game on the build in screen and it seem to be there for external screens not matter what. If I only had been someone that could buy second best and just get the 1070 instead but I'm not that kind of a guy unfortunately :D

If only Aorus haden't decided to use the same crappy 120 Hz screen (the IPS version isn't available here) I would be out of here by now but seems like every manufacturer except MSI is hell bent on this panel. Unfortunately, MSIs designers seem to be 12 years old...

Well the only reason why I stated G-Sync was the fact that Alienware stated that they had to pair the 1080 GTX with a G-Sync enabled monitor. That is why it is not paired with the 4K monitor.

If someone could only make a decent 1440p 120 hz and we wouldn't be having these discussions. I'm guessing that it is NVidia that might force the manufacturers to pair it with this panel.

youre going to have to wait for alienware to catch up if you have to have a 1080/6820hk/ips screen

the other manufactures have that already, some even come with the 6920HQ

The 1440p 120hz IPS is 25ms response time, while the TN is 5ms response time.

Not entirely sure who said that, but it's in this forum somewhere.

Gotta say, i love the 1080P IPS panel they are using in the R4. Its part of what sold me on the laptop at best Buy, and seeing it at home impressed me even more. No backlight bleed, and people can complain about the 25ms response.... but i cant notice it..

The 6920HQ is worse compared to the 6820HK because the maximum possible overclock you achieve is 4GHz on all cores, whereas with the 6820HK it will go as high as you want it to be*

*Maximum possible overclock on the 6820HK is 8GHz on all cores

thats why i said instead of the 6700hq. there are other laptops with the 6820hk also just saying alienware i really behind this year with their launch.

if you can wait till they catch up you could probably get the kaby lake version of the HK, the 1080, and an ips screen.

personally im thinking of the 13 now since the oled panel downsampled to 1080p still probably looks better than a 1080p ips screen
just hoping the screen size will do, since im used to 15 inches

Well considering that there are only so many panels on the market, and also most of Alienware's competitors are using the same panels as AW, its not a compromise with AW its really the panel makers and the current state of the panel market.

Well, I guess it is also because of what the manufacturers are willing to spend. Can't remember Apple having problems like these (which surely can't be "no ****, that we had NEVER seen before but will look into now"). So I would say it is the state of the (PC) industry rather than just of the LCD panels.

I did try 100Hz, but it was a little wonky. I didnt try 90, because i also noticed that using the nVida card alone also did something screwy to the DPI (despite windows being set the same). But i may try it again.

Well, i know what you are saying, but ironically.. i did get the hardware *I* wanted... ;)
