iunlock will tell you. He is the one who repasted my Alien Unit.

I tell you this though. I'd rather send the unit to iunlock to reach it's full potential like mine. Just my opinion.

Well to tell you the truth. I cancelled my order of AW 17. After reading all of the issues . Besides I live in India and my friend is getting the laptop for me from USA so can't risk it being broke.

I guess I should not be posting here. But I'm just an enthusiast. Ordered the Aorus x5 v6.

It's iunlock's tune. Same results, less thermals due to the tunning.

Iunlock still has my computer. Once he ships it and I received the unit, I will test.

Also, my previous max temps were 98 degrees on stock clocks.

Is there instructions on what we need to change to do this tune?

I tried running OCCT with lvl 3 default from the BIOS. I was getting high 80's temp wise. eventually the OCCT program stopped the test saying that temps reached some type of limit...

I repasted my laptop last night along with the thermal pads. I did not do any heatsink bending... just the repaste.

Okay. Thanks. Also I was going through the firestrike results. All laptops with a 6700k seem to be the ones on top. Could this mean that 6820hk bottlenecks the 1080 ..?

As a reminder, the new systems are being shipped out with a borked BIOS so basically the lower temps people are seeing are not wide open throttle runs....ie....

It's like having a rev limiter (governor) on a sports car. Pointless and Dell's very shady way of trying to trick people with a band aid fix. It's just madness as it makes the GTX 1080 pointless, let alone the 6820HK.

Yep mine came Wednesday with BIOS 1.0.8 and it ran like mid 80's running OCCT on overclock LVL 3. I went to 1.0.2 and couldn't go past LVL 2 running OCCT without hitting 100c on cores 0 and 2 and 90c on the other two cores lol.

I agree. It's very shady and no one will get even close to this machine or machines similar to its full potential on 1.0.8

Since Dell seem to have perfected the finger print magnet coating from the XPS line even further with the new Alienwares, are there some kind of "protective coating" skin or similar you can get to put around the keyboard and touch pad?

Perhaps a strange question but how bad are the current problems with CPU, GPU etc? I know from experience that some overclocking people can be a bit manic about this so perhaps it isn't such a problem for the average customer as it is for the ones looking to squeeze out the last 0,1% of performance :D

The component will last longer if the temperature is cooler.

Regarding heat, the stock paste will hold 75+c on the AW15 if the CPU is below 30watts. Anything above 30 will instantly skyrocket temps to 99 and possibly thermal shutdown. This means that the system is not working as intended because it cannot cool the default 45w/55w TDP specified by Intel for default operation.

There's been reports of double thermal pad disallowing contact between the TIM and GPU, then there's @richiec77 's system with a unique flaw practically doing the same thing.

The GPU cooling is decent compared to the CPU, IF the heatsink actually makes contact with the GPU silicon...

The only single GPU machine I would consider (if I were not able to disassemble it) would be the GT73VR.

Many seller with NBR rep and provide member discount can sell you without tax, so the price would be similar to a cheaper AW + tax.

Yup. :) Thank goodness...if it was some shady gig where we couldn't roll back....bye bye AW. It'd be the end and a ton of us would be sending our units back.

OC'ing the unlocked CPU and GPU will gain much more than 1%. For an average non-overclocker, the GTX 1080 is overboard and a waste of money. I'd opt for the GTX 1070..it's a fine card as I along with others have demonstrated for several hundreds of dollars less.

Sad isn't it? Bait and switch by Dell.... BIOS 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 is absolute rubbish and complete madness. Trickery at it's finest.

Aside to the thermal paste and tri-goof-ball CPU arm design, the system is among the best of best. Best in build quality and a darn fine cooling system as I have yet to see any other system in this class to produce the cooling that we've shown so far after a little work under the hood.

The P775DM3 is a great machine, but it lacks major build quality when putting it up against the new AW17R4. There is just no comparison. If you can live with thicker, plasticy, horrible keyboard and the worlds worst track pad, then the P775DM3 is an excellent choice. If it wasn't for the unlocked 6820HK, the 775 would be sitting on my desk right now running a 6700K at 4.6GHz without even breaking a sweat.

Yea Dell's hanging on by a string and with the whole toothpaste and uneven heat sink fiasco (tri-poop design) they have a lot to show for in the next revision. It's such a shame....pretty much nailed everything else only to poop on the awesomeness by the known issues. It just does not make sense...Dell needs to follow through and not let the share holders dictate the idea of taking short cuts to make their pockets deeper....Dell I hope that you realize that the damage that is being done is doing digging a deeper whole, causing more harm than gain. No more short cuts...Just follow through....

How do you justify taking weak arms from this...

And putting that same weak sauce on a gaming laptop, let alone the flag ship with a tri-WhyInTheWorld design...

When you're previous R3's heat sink mounting system walks circles around the current revision? We don't get it....

I don't use nor recommend using the stock OC profiles. A lot of us actually despise them...it is best to OC the multipliers yourself to obtain, what we consider a true over clock of all the multipliers being the same...ie...the stock profiles have the multipliers all over the place....weak sauce :p ....instead, run it at 40x, 40x, 40x, 40x for example by manually setting it in BIOS, then tune it accordingly with XTU etc...

The 6700K had a huge edge over the 6820HK in that it can obtain higher clocks without breaking a sweat. Those higher clocks really add a lot onto the physics, thus yielding better results in over all scores. However, when it comes to purely looking at GPU scores...that's a different story...neck to neck.

As mentioned before, that is because the new systems are being shipped with a crippled 1.0.8 bios... this is very shady business from Dell and their attempt to addressing the high temp issues that is caused by the toothpaste and uneven heat sink (tri-mounting design). ..

Yeah, I am running this classic on a Noctua NT-1 Paste job from 2005-7 era, and my AMD 9950 Black OC'd CPU is idling at 31c :)

I am saying that most people that aren't professionals aren't going to get our results out of the gate the first time, or the first dozen times.

It's a skill that comes from being able to be aware of many aspects that all come together to have an optimal conclusion. Most people have no clue as to what 1/10th of those aspects are going in the first time.

I find it a false misdirection to tell people how long my paste jobs run, because I know they aren't going to get those results.

I know the results they are going to get are the same results everyone that does it the first few times gets, a real mess that needs to be re-done immediately or soon thereafter - no where near 2 years + :)

That's why I try to encourage people to let the vendor fix it instead of doing it themselves if they have no experience. Or swap it for another unit, or find another laptop brand / model that works out of the box.

Ah yes...it's normal...always let it do its thing and wait it out unless it goes past 20mins or so....Sometimes it hangs and doing a simple hard shut down and powering back up is like CPR ...everything usually is fine after it powers back on...however, FOR ANYONE READING THIS, DO NOT TOUCH THE MACHINE WITHIN THIS TIME OR YOU MAY BRICK YOUR LAPTOP. :)
