Jajaja nop. I tried using the 2 cards at the same time. (Gtx 1070 for 17.3 monitor and GA 1080 for tv) I did not like the result.

Is correct the link speed x8?

Also anyone have any issue with there fan speeds? Idk why but my fans have been going full blast recently even on idle. I think it has something to do with the custom overclock in the bios. If I set the profile to default they barely turn on. The Temps are fine, i just was at 40c yet my fans were full blast. It I go into hw64 and open the fan control and click Alienware auto they go to the correct speed, but 5 minutes later there full blast again. Anyone know what's up?

This Bios use nominal power limit as it was intended with an efficient cooling system.

In short : It won't limit the power drawn by the CPU like the other Bios to avoid overheating issue.

With Bios 1.0.2 and efficient cooling, you can reach higher performance especially if you OC.

Or put it the other way... Dell's best fix for thermal and difference in temp between coldest vs. hottest core is pushing out a gimped firmware  You risk never could upgrade to newer firmware with other fixes because of the current temp problem.

    AW 1080 Model:

For the 17R4 with the 1080 you'll need:
    3x - 1.0mm (100x15)
    2x - 0.5mm (100x15)

Note: I like the 100x15 size pads because the width is perfect for the majority of the application, however, you could order the 50x60 as well for the smaller applications. It's completely up to you. The quantity recommended is just what I normally order for one application.

Also if you've noticed the rectangle square on the right side of the GPU plate...well....Dell forgot to put a thermal pad there LOL....yup....it was missing.

Hi, this is my first comment on this forum, i have been watching and thinking to purchase the new alienware laptop system for a while .

Regarding your picture, there is a chinese word on your left fan, it says not pass and defect. So i dont know why the word is wrote on the fan, and if this unit is defected , why dell is still selling the unit to the customer.

Yup! Gallium is highly reactive with Aluminum. Need to double check the mounting area to see if it's aluminum or Nickle plated copper next time I tear it down to apply the Conductonaut. BUT it's highly likely to be Aluminum.

    WoW!!!! 4.9GHz!!!! That's impressive! Even for a 6700K.

Clevo P870DM2_DM3. They have much more room on the CPU side and an advantage right now on the GPU side.

With an OC in the AW17, the 1080 hits around 22,500-23,000 in Graphics. The card is power limit capped at 165W for mine and probably most others in the AW17. In a 775DM3 or other chassis that uses a MXM 3.0B card; those are usually about 200W Power Limited. aka the card can scale higher in stock form using the GPU boost 3.0. (Prema or Dell needs a newer VBios to fix the limit) That AW17 listed there is an Extremely good example with an OC CPU and OC GPU.

    12_9_2016_Firestrike_1080p.JPG

AH!!...I see what you found. Lower the Thermal Pad thickness over the chokes to bring it lower on the hot-side of the CPU. Did not notice the need for a 1.5mm in that one spot, but will definitely check that out Sunday when my Kapton tape gets here and I do the repaste with LM.

So, i dont know if it was an update, or what, i notice now that my IR light for the Windows Hello login keeps flashing despite me sitting there using the machine. Obviously not a huge deal, but it is a bit distracting; but more so since it didn't always do that. Anyone have an idea of what should be changed so it doesn't keep doing that....?

EDIT: OK.. nevermind.. For some reason, the Tobii software was installed/activated somehow, despite not having the hardware for it.. so it kept trying to use the IR light...

    New orders,

Be careful when placing your order. The third configuration option enables you to select the i7-6820HK, UHD, and the GTX 1080... it won't throw an error when placing the order, but it will most certainly be canceled down the road.

Hi guys, my alienware 17 r4 will be coming this january and due to this cpu temp horror stories and me not being capable of doing the repaste on my own. Do you think that I can ask a technician to do a repaste but with my own choice of cpu paste? Thanks

Hey everyone, thanks for the awesome thread I've learnt heaps!

I'm planning on buying one of these on Monday through the Dell website, just wondering how you guys have found the fan noise?

I was going to buy the 1070 version with the i7-6700 but there is a special on at the moment and the 1080 version with the i7-6820 is only 90 dollars more.. Are there any drawbacks in getting the 1080 option in terms of fan noise and CPU/GPS temps or is it a no brainer and I should go for it?

    Thanks!

No drawbacks. All or most of the AW units have temp issue. Since 1080 is 90 dollars more, get that instead. Additionally if you repaste it properly, it can solve the temps. iunlock is man for that if you are not confident with repaste.

Is that Thermal pad picture unlock posted his new fix along with the tension arm or does he have a new trick up his sleeve. I repasted mine but still have a pretty big difference between the cores. So I plan on opening it up and bending the tension arm too today. I just don't want to go through all the trouble, if he discover something new and I have to tear it down again tomorrow.

Cheers man will go for the 1080 then! Any idea on how loud the fans are for just normal use and not gaming?

I have seen some owners on reddit post some pretty good looking temps, do you think if mine has high temps I can complain to dell and get them to repaste it?

    Thanks

Guys noticed a new issue. The sound is popping in games (Rainbow6Siege, Wolfenstein, Arma3) - i have tried running with just speakers, and with a headset - popping continues.

Updated new drivers on audiocard too, but no fix.

If this is indeed true, it is the nail in the Dell coffin. Dell has sucked on QC the last 10 years but if they have actually tested it, found it to be defect and still shipped it to the customer, then its fraud.

Don't you miss the fact that you are forced to go with the TN G-Sync panel with the 1080? Which means that Optimus is out of the questions, and the potential risk of getting a panel with striping problems (or have Dell switched makers)?

Wouldn't it be the other way around, that unless you want to OC you should get the 1080 and get more performance than a 1070 without overclocking?

    Howdy folks,

I've seen a smattering of benchmarks across the 184 pages of posts here, and in other subforums... but I've been unable to establish which hardware specs I should go with because:

    * Every poster is experiencing vastly different base cooling
    * Different posters OC in different ways
    * Can't always tell what CPU/GPU a particular poster is using
    * New BIOS breaks performance

    So, comparing these 3 setups:

    6700 + 1070
    6820 + 1070
    6820 + 1080

Assuming I repaste/shim/ to ensure good base cooling, what real world performance can one expect with light overclocking? My impression from this site is the 6820 and/or 1080 may actually decrease overall performance unless you really luck out on cooling, have iUnlock bless it, and/or tweak the OC profiles heavily. Firestrike scores may also not translate well into real world performance and really seems all over the map here...

My goal is rock solid 1440p gaming w/ everything turned up.

Also, has anyone noticed that Best Buy has a 6700 + 1070 system for $1650? Over the past month that seems anywhere from $150 to $50 cheaper than the price w/ discounts on Alienware's website in the US?

I have never really owned a laptop so I'm sure this TN panel will look fine to me, I also wanted a 120Hz screen for gaming. I guess it just depends on what you prioritise and what the laptop will mainly be used for.

The results are all over the place because the variables from one member to the next remain all over the place. While you might opt for IC diamond, stock pads, and leave your tension arm alone, the next guy may tweak the tension arm, use LM paste, and replace the stock pads with Fujipoly ultra's. To complicate matters further, people are running different BIOS versions which have significantly effected performance. The extent to which these variables are addressed informs the performance gains.

Having received my AW 17 R4 yesterday - I can confirm that in:
*idle use the fans are near silent (<20dB)
*below 2700 rpm the fans are very quiet (<30dB)
*2701- 3500 rpm the fans are audible
*3501 rpm+ the fans are loud

    My idle temps are:
    45-55C across the cores

    Load temps are:
    70-85C across the cores

    GPU highest temp:
    75C

These are temps based on Doom, all settings ultra and GTA all settings ultra

Fans are very audible in these scenarios

TN 120hz Gsync panel is lovely. Banding lines can be seen if you're a few inches away from the screen but honestly really impossible to see it in normal use and definitely gaming use. I think the reports on banding here have been exaggerated
    ---------------

Overall though I think I will be returning the laptop as while it doesn't throttle in any of the testing yet (probably due to the crippled 1.0.8 bios), it is loud under load and has various niggles that are irritating like light bleed, some keys flex etc

Looks like we can finally configure an order with the 4k panel and the GTX 1080, I see it up on the site today.

OK I Repasted today and ran some CPU stress tests and Firestrike.. NO MORE Thermal throttling.. I still am hitting 80's but When I first got it it was high 90s and a few 100 even temps.. Constant thermal throttling.. I am on CPU overclock level 2 by the way.

I am very happy with the new temps. Fans used to run full blast randomly just surfing the web now they dont unless I am gaming..

New Firestrike score.. GPU stock. CPU level 2 overclock 15,738

Thanks. :) Even before all of this we've had something in the works in terms of our company. It's not because of the AW heat sink issue, but rather it was something already brewing, which will be launched soon. Appreciate your generosity. I do have some questions related to some coding so I'll PM you.

That's good if you prefer 80s on your temps.

Have you seen what iunlock did on my unit? (hint.... It's mostly 50s to mid 60s overclock to 4.0)

Yes, I really am impressed with that! I did not change the thermal pads, just the repaste only.. I definitely would like lower but at least for now my unit doesn't thermal throttle anymore.. here is a pic of my idle temps at overclock level 2 in bios
