So, I am planning to get the new Alienware 17 R4 with almost maxed out specs
-i7 6820HK
-GTX 1080
-32GB Ram
-4 SSDs (1 960 512, 1 Transcend 512, 1 ???, 1 Samsung 850 EVO)
-4K Display
Just want to know, TG Conductant is the best liquid metal thermal paste right?
Also, does anyone happen to know the rating of the speakers of the AW17R4? I think it is 12.5W (5W per channel and 2.5W for the subwoofer) -
Hello Experts,
Is there a big temperature difference between the 1070 with a 6700hq and the 1080 in combination with 6820hk?
Because I saw pics with the bigger heatsink for the 1080, So maybe the cooling is equal or even better?
Also do you have experience with the temp difference for the combination 1070 and 6700hq in AW 17 and AW 15?
My plan was to wait until Dell fixed the issues, but right now is a really really nice offer for the AW 17 with 1080 6820hk and AW 15 with 6700hq.
Have you anything heard, when Dell will fix the issues?
Thank you very much for your opinions and experience.
Hendrik

Not sure about speaker.

I'm sure it's because the fans are coming on sooner with the OC and that throws a code during diagnostic that wasn't accounted for with these 6820s. At least that is my guess. Nothing is wrong with your fan unit. Mine throws a code as do others on the forum and nothing is wrong with our fans. I think you are fine on that part.

I need help. I turned on my Aw17 and the Fx lights are on, the fans are on and the Alienware head is blinking red but I do not see any display on my screen. No Bios , No alienware logo. Nothing. The Alienware head is blinking red though. I tried turn on numerous times but stil the same thing. Any idea how to fix this? I tried using an external display but still no go

What I do in this case is to use a plastic card to scrap off the squished out paste around the edges - out beyond where it does any good - and use it to fill in around the middle of the sweet spot of the heat plate / CPU and then use the card to flatten out the "peaky paste" so that you work out / pop any trapped air pockets.
Then once you have worked a super thin even layer of paste on both the CPU and heat plate areas that touch, if you need a little more new paste - use the plastic card to work it in those open areas, and even it out. Thin - almost see through - it takes time to get the right thinness - too much and it insulates and lifts the parts too far apart - letting air in.
Once you have coverage all the way around, trim 1/16" - just a ridge, around the 4 edges of the CPU / Heatplate area such that the "squish" of paste just misses showing at the edge of contact. That should create a block to oxidation if done correctly, and you have good pressure / meeting of the parts. This is key for long term viability of the paste.
It's an art, but it's the best way to apply paste. These X and Pea dots that "spread from pressure" don't have good coverage and in fact lift up the heatsink from the surrounding areas outside the patch of paste, causing no contact and even worse, areas for air to get in.
It's tough to do, you will likely redo it several times until you get the feel of the pressure with the card, paste, and physical angles. Don't be shy with trying lots of different thicknesses and flexibility of the card / applicator, you will find a favorite and want to keep it clean for future use.
So, yeah, you can reuse the paste you just put on
I wouldn't mix old paste and new paste, but 24 hours old exposed paste should be ok.Last edited: Dec 13, 2016GSXRMIKE04 likes this. -
Turns out the CMOS wanted to be reset. Could be the RAM though as I reseated the RAM and SSD, then plugged n D.C. Battery cable and did a CMOS reset by unplugging the small connector.
It'll do a weird 2-4 cycle POST and then pop,up with a Time reset. -

In the Replacing Coin Cell Battery, Object #1 is the connector for the CMOS. You don't have to tear the computer all the way down to access the connector. You can pull the bottom cover off, then under M.2 #2 slot is where you can access that connector. Unplug it for 30 sec then plug it back in.hmscott likes this. -

you guys may want to check on your gift cards. I ordered 11/21/16 and they are saying we are only getting 5% back on the gift card and not 10% when we ordered our 17R4 and 65inch LG UHD B6 TV which was 2800. I am so upset as I spent 2 hours on the phone with dell about inquiring about the status of the gift card and seeing if my agent put the 100$ credit on the card as he was helping me get a better price. Not only did he not put the 100 on the gift card, they won't do anything now and they said at the end it's only 5%. I asked to speak with a supervisor and he said they will look into 10% and a case specialist will follow up. It's such a run around with them and if it turns out to be 5% that's just plain false advertising as it was CLEARLY 10% and I shouldn't even have to have a case specialist follow this "case."

Alienware officially switched out the QHD display with:
Alienware Optx 17.3” QHD (2560x1440) 120Hz TN AG 400-nits w/ NVIDIA G-SYNC and Tobii Eye-tracking.
That's one outstanding issue resolved. I believe this is the LG panel they were replacing the old TN panels with.hmscott likes this. -
what the hell is Optx?

Good Morning All,
This will get you laughing right off the bat as you start your day...ready? Put the coffee down, because you might spill it....
Like many of you, I've owned/own pretty much every thermal paste under sun. Yes, even a $1 thermal paste ROFL. So then I got to thinking....
How would Dell's stamp compare to a $1 thermal paste that is rated at 1.22w m/k? In all seriousness and for data purposes...
The test was done on a bone stock AW17R4 (1070) without any mods ie...everything as is with the wonderful core differentials. (<- That's a joke...the wonderful part.)
So again in all seriousness, this would mean that the stock Dell unknown stamp is worse than 1.22w m/k in theory...
You be the judge.
With the uneven heat sink issue due to the thermal pad thickness over the FET's, the $1 paste outperformed the stock paste under the same conditions of the heat sink.
Here's the $1 Paste...30grams of it for a buck...LOL, but guys don't waste your money. I only bought it for data collection.

Does Crest Toothpaste preform better than Dells stock stamp or any OEM paste? .... (I have the answers and it'll shock you...will post soon with Fire Strike, Time Spy and Unigine Heaven.)
*You know them disclaimers you see on certain things that make you say, Duh?! Well for the record, yes we know that toothpaste would dry out blah blah blah....guys this is just a joke and in good fun lol...It's sad that I even have to mention the obvious, but there are those certain peeps..lolLast edited: Dec 14, 2016 -

Yeah ! Would be a shame if Dell's Paste on a 2000$ machine wasn't better than nothing.

However, the thermal issue is a real problem, but Dell is in the works of addressing it now.
(*To be fair, I'm attacking Dell's unknown stamp "Now Officially Toothpaste," being used on these gaming laptops that cost thousands. As for the machine itself, it's obviously IMO one of the best in its category, less the issues that it has. With those fixed...it's a fine machine.)Last edited: Dec 14, 2016s1rrah, CrazyHoover and Johnni3 like this. -

Does "thermal coating" and "thermal paste" write alike in Chineese ? Maybe a confusion when doing orders ?

Is it safe to downgrade the bios of a GTX1080 r4 to 1.0.2?
