Yea the 1070 cards when OC'ed are strong cards. I've already shown that many times previously.

It's such a shame about the power limits, but at the end of the day, how will that affect the gaming experience?

    Answer: ZERO.

All of this only matters when we're nit picking for benchmarks. Other than that the 1070 or the 1080 are great cards. I've made posts on this before showing the strengths of the 1070 card OC'ed. (Neat how the 1070 Notebook has more CUDA cores than the desktop 1070.)

The AW 1070 is not 100W btw. During benches and gaming it'll float around 125w range...

The AW 1080 (my unit)) peaked at 174W. Let's see if Dell comes through in upping this power limit.

With g sync, the monitor is wired/tied directly to the nvidia gpu. There is no option to run off the igpu. Just part of the technology. Pros and cons of both tho

What settings/overclock did you use to get those numbers on you 1070? I can only manage a graphics score of around 18,000 on my 1070/6820HK machine.

I think the speakers sound incredibly good for a laptop. They are not as loud as my MSI GS70's speakers, which are insanely loud and sound pretty decent ... but the AW17's are still loud enough but to my ear *sound* more "fleshed out" than the MSI's ... more discernible mid range and more discernible bass ... they also produce a very nice "spatial" effect, be it due to the placement of the speakers or some other design factor ... I rarely use the laptop speakers, but when I do have to, I'm liking what I hear. Especially compared to 90% of the other laptops I've owned (Gigabyte, Asus, Sony, HP, Compaq, etc.). Of all the laptops I've owned, only this AW17 and my MSI GS70 produce sound well enough that I feel no need to supplement with some sort of USB power external speaker...

Can't wait to hear the speakers on my exchange model.

Wait a minute..I'm confused here. The scores are being compared to the same Alienware with much higher clocks and perhaps higher power limit. Its the same Alienware that got us in a pickle discussing about its low GPU power limit. How does that make sense? Dell, please explain.

Edit: Perhaps this is good for us if this is Dell's own results meaning when its unlocked than it could be better than what we have here. Still doesn't take away the pleasure that I have so far with this laptop with plenty of power.

It could matter alot if you get a good one. 1070s are just 1080s with one of the gpcs shut off. That means if the chip has a similar quality to a 1080 it should run cooler and allow for an even higher clockrate than the 1080. My guess though is that the lower quality chips are the ones picked to become 1070s as well as mobile versions. Hence the lower clockrates. Still some of those 1070s could be high quality chips that just had a defective core or something. So I wouldnt rule out the wattage being a non issue. It could be a sizeable performance gap.

I know if i get a golden 1070 the first thing I would regret is not having it unlocked. Right now im using a 980m with an asic of 83.5% so these things do happen.

Pretty much same config I have in the r3. The 1070 seems to be a huge jump over the 980m, but man I wish they had the 1080 hahaha

Does anyone know if it is possible to do a direct swap to a 3840x2160 panel from a 1920x1080 one? Also, does anyone know the model that Dell uses for the 4k screen on the 17r4?

Hi guys. Any update on the heat issues with the bad thermal paste? Has Dell officially fixed it or can anyone confirm? That is the only thing stopping me from buying this machine. Dell outlet has some amazing deals right now, and I could always follow the repaste forum/youtube videos if needed. Thanks

Does anyone actually like the QHD 120 Hz screen? Besides the 120 Hz / G Sync stuff (which adds nothing to me), it could be the worst LCD panel I've seen in 5-10 years. The striping is very obvious in everything, bad viewing angels, the colors are bad and the contrast seem to be very low.

And the answer to the obvious question is "Because Dell forced me to get the QHD as I wanted the GTX1080".

Thanks. The fan noise was recorded from where my head would be when gaming as that seemed the most practical, however, moving closer toward the laptop made little difference in the db's.

In comparison the GT73VR clocks in at 69db on max fans, so in that regard the AW1080 isn't that loud.

My "completed" unit, supposedly to deliver 1/1, is still unchanged in status today. In the "testing" stage according to the sales support guy 2 days ago. Perhaps they are actually testing the units before shipping now, and correcting issues. Perhaps they are just waiting on something and giving me incorrect information.

The arrival date is listed as 1/1-1/9 on the follow up email by the support person, so anything is possible.

Thank you for some solid measurements. I'll be testing mine probably on the 4th or 5th with every game i can think of starting with the gpu bottlenecks and moving to the dual bottlenecks. Im also hoping that the cpu can hit full tdp and keep up as i am getting one with the 6700 and 1070.

I was able to order a spare 330 watt power brick, and 2 heat spreaders for the SSDs today, with 2 day free shipping. (Shipping might be due to my 300 person company's exclusive Dell use, Servers, SAN, desktops, but not sure, he offered it right up)

Heat spreaders part number JV98R were almost $5 each.

These items will most likely arrive before the laptop.

Would it be a good idea to use Phobya liquid metal on this computer even with the poor heatsink coverage that they used to ship with? I'm getting a refurbished one so it will probably be older.

Nevermind I'm just going to use a paste. I don't want to mess around with this stuff

I actually got mine today and haven't even turned it on. My unit was in the "Completed" phase for about 4 days. Upon opening the box, I could tell it was handled, there were a couple of fingerprints on the bottom. Not gross fingerprints, just noticeable. This is my second new gen (first was a 15) and I could clearly tell that this one was played with before where as the 15 came straight from the factory. I will be testing it tonight, but won't really get to "get into it" until the weekend.

With that said, my 1080 unit came with a 330w psu, is that normal?

Pardon if this has been discussed ... but has there been any information on an unlocked bios for the 1070 AW17? I'm curious to see what this card can do if allowed more voltage ... temps are so good that it would be a shame not to try and push the thing past what can be had on the stock volts ...

Question for anyone with the 4K screen on an AW 17R4 - is it the same screen as the R3 4K? The R3 was advertised with 400 nit and IGZO, whereas the R4 is advertised as 300nit and IPS. I loved the 4K screen on the R3 because it had a great color gamut. Can anyone speak to the quality of the 4K on the R4?

Ran Firestrike on the highest factory cpu OC: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11248262 16,234 - hk/1080

I think my best timespy run was about 6423 but for some reason that one didn't save to my profile so I can't link it.

This score seems decent for factory, but in theory shouldn't I be able to hit this with a 1070 or near it with a factory 1070? I could return this, save about a g, and get a 1070 through the outlet.

Also FWIW, my 120hz TN 1440p screen has no signs of banding. I have tried with multiple colors and didn't see any. I will say that the colors aren't very rich though and the display is extremely cold. I use yellow glasses when I game at night and with those on the colors actually look way better.

I haven't found the highest overclock this 1070 can run at and so not sure if that's as good as it can get ...

    FYI ...just for some perspective.

Does EVERY 1060/1070 alienware they send out have temp issues right now? Do some people find them to be okay? Also, how does this compare to the clevo p67XXs.. is the alienware ok if you use Throttlestop like the Clevo users are doing?

Thanks for that perspective. Your gpu score is only 2k less than mine, yet that is with the OC. I guess I need to OC mine a little bit before I really try to measure the playing field.

    Just receive my AW17 R4 + 1080GTX.

    Wonderful laptop!!!

Temps are correct 2°c difference between core in normal mode OC 1 2 & 3!!
    I am a lucky boy!

One question : How to optimize Nvidia panel control for benchmark ?
Example : How To configure Physix? 1080 or Intel ? V-Sync ? etc...

So Just received my 17 r4 (1070 / 6820hk) and it has really bad light bleed, cpu core differentials of 20c, and alienware seem to have limited the 6820hk to a lower cpu ghz than even the 6700 runs at?
Called tech support and one of their top tier tech said there was nothing wrong with my machine and they would do nothing about any of the issues!! I then spoke to someone else and they admitted they've had serious issues and that they have stopped production until the issues have been resolved. He said they were hoping for around February (UK). I'm just going to return under the 30 day cooling off period annoyingly at my expense.

I'm unsure whether to wait and see with alienware if they get things fixed or get a 17.3" Octane III / Clevo P775DM3-G with gtx1080, 6700k, and everything else same spec including the same 4k display as used in the alienware from pcspecialist.co.uk. it will be around the same price but on should be more powerful on both the gpu and cpu but I'm not keen on the looks/ size and unsure if any other issues to be aware of/ build quality. little concerned about heat putting a desktop cpu in a laptop as well.

Has anyone had any experience with these computers in comparison to one another?

    Cheers

UK buyer here, I ordered on the 5/Dec and it arrived yesterday, temperatures are 45 to 60 and about 2 Celsius in difference to each CPU. So you should be able to get the fixed version sooner. Decided not to repaste afterall. However the screens still have banding issues and I got Frank Azor to confirm in writing that they will switch the panel with the new version which should be ready in Feb/ March.

Otherwise I'd return it because the banding is unacceptable.

I'm probably talking to the minority here but has anyone tried overclocking the 6700hq via the baseclock? I really doubt its possible since its dell and its probably locked but the idea of running at 3.1ghz 4 core is killing me even if it wont have the insane throttling that my r2 did. I will not be using optimus so that's another 1-7w of power to use even with the 2w reduction in TDP.

Sigh. I got this laptop as a free upgrade since my r2 was such a piece 4 mobos in a row. I figured why not cause the 1070 was a huge step up from the 980m but i was already kindof limited in games by the 4720hq. Now I'm going to be running 300mhz slower. Theres got to be a way to increase this.

JUST TELL ME YOU CAN INCREASE THE BCLK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just received my laptop 1080 AW17r4. Only a half hour to play with it before leaving for the weekend.

Love the chassis and size compared to my ASUS ROG.

Screen (1440) looks fine. Perhaps I'm just old, I could not see banding in the solid colors. Did not have a dark enough space to check light bleed. I will keep this one for now.

5 minutes of OCCT testing showed 7 and 9 degree core differentials, max 76. This one will need some work it appears, which won't happen until I return after the holiday.

Hi, I don't know the r3 4k screen, I'm coming from 5 years old AW m17xR3. The sreen is beautiful but have some light bleed to severe light bleed. Dell change me the screen and the bezel today and i have still light bleed but only in the top right corner.

The light bleed is caused by the bezel resting up on the screen. You can fix it by raising it up a little bit by adding tape onto the metal frame of the lcd screen.

Note sure if it is an age thing, more how good vision one has. I say the striping (which I assume you mean) even on the BIOS/startup screen from normal viewing distance. I believe I have quite good vision for being on the north side of 40.

But don't go looking for it if you cant see it now, once you can see it there is no way back :D
