Why not just return and reorder?

Because the prices are a lot higher now? They've had my money for over a month? One would believe that expecting a company to honor an invoice isn't too high a requirement.

Im guessing that the chips that are supposed to be the 6700HQs are the lower quality ones hence they take a higher voltage to remain stable. That way they can sell them for less and just solder them to the motherboard and not care. Intel has been investing less in thier pc chips since they haven't had as much competition the past years so you really shouldn't expect a big boost. Even though we bought a top of the line gaming machine the system is designed now so that main stream laptops with anything but the most expensive cpu's are gimped. Given the throttling issues that haswell had I'm hoping that the new 6700hq will outperform my 4720hq in games where i could not run the max stock turbo (overwatch had to run at 2.6 - 2.8ghz to be stable depending on the mobo). But there are games like heroes of the storm that are older engines and cpu limited while putting a low load on the cpu. Sadly I will get much lower framerates in any of those on my new system due to the locked multiplier.
Just got my refrubished free replacement computer today 6700HQ 1070 QHD 120hz. EDIT: THERE IS BANDING ON THE LOWER PART OF THE SCREEN. It is not bad in my opinion. I'm primarily a gamer though despite also being quite good at rendering with gimp and photoshop. Have yet to really test the cooling system and clockrate stability in games as I am setting up the lighting and reinstalling windows to lighten up on the bloatware.
If you guys don't already know this you can edit the ath files that the lighting system uses and get more color options than the crappy selection the editor gives you. I go for a brighter closer to white color as it makes the keys light up even more. Then Ill restart so the colors are saved and I never have to use that program again.Last edited: Jan 3, 2017 -
Yeah man its just as bad as I thought. Running at 1.144 v at 3.2 ghz. Hopefully I can get a decent stable undervolt.
(6700hq) -
I have the same loose screw. I took it out of the laptop but I can't find out where it goes

The refurbished model (6700hq 1070) I just got shipped to me on dec 28 has the uneven core temp problem. I'm seeing almost a 20°C difference in core temps.
So if you get a refurbished model you will probably have to do the fix. I will report back on if they applied different paste or not after attempting the fix. It seems that temps are decent. Staying under 70°C for max core temp and around 50°C for the coolest core.stratman71 likes this. -
Thats amazing that 2 computers would have the identical problem.... mind blown. (no sarcasm at all).
-
I ordered an aurora R5 and it was supposed to have 2 1070's and watercooled cpu and it came with a single 1070 and cpu fan. I was pretty mad as this was the black friday deal and the coupons were long gone. They wouldn't do anything even though in my order it clearly stated 2 gpu's and the watercooled chasis. First world problems for sure, but still inconvenient.
-
bah. Well, with the new 7700hq/7820hk R4's releasing in two days I may as well wait and see how they're priced. Sounds like the refurb lotto is too risky right now. If I snag one, I'll post the temps and board pics when it arrives.

I get my 17 R4 6820hk 1080 tomorrow but seeing that I may return and re buy if the price is right
-
Tweet that about to Frank Azor, I read his tweets the other day and he was taking care of everyone that tweeted to him with this kind of issue -
Question is, have they fixed the issues or is it going to be just a refresh with new chips and old problems.
-
Very frustrating, to be sure. Would using different thermal pads and better paste on the manufacturing end really hurt their profit more than word of mouth about poor manufacturing ?
c'mon dell, pleasepleaseplease make these new Kaby Lakers the flagships they deserve to be until CoffeeLake in Q2-2018.
With a release date of Jan 5th, as of now, I hope to find out soon....after 4 years my sager9170 is getting awfully rickity.

Anabody knows how to make a clean windows install. I try with the 2 iso files from dell on an usb drive with rufus but it doesn't work. Thanks
-
Hahaha, i opened it up today to repaste and reseat the heatsink to see if that was the problem. And indeed as i removed the heatsink i see that DELL hasnt even applied ANY paste on the GPU !!!!
During my order they promised i would have the computer on the 20th december at the latest (they had a Campaign with discount and guaranteed to get it Before christmas) but they totaly missed that and i got it 3rd january. They would not compensate me with a vindicator rucksack.
And now i discover this! I wonder if they will still deny me any compensation?Attached Files:

Try this thread by @Phoenix I plan to use this once I finish with my repaste etc.

That is way too funny. I saw one with the heat pads all over, and under the fan, and now this. I'm getting a bit interested in what I will find.
-
i can add that two of the GPU heatpads were not covering 30% of the vrams so i aligned em perfectly

Do overclocking the screen reduces ghosting? I wanted a 4k display, but after reading about this overclocking thing, im reconsidering my purchase.

Is any one sending there 6820hk system back for the 7820 systems?

It was from the outlet... I am sure he wouldn't do anything about it.

Just received my M17 R4 yesterday with Build date: Dec 15, 2016
GPU: GTX 1060
Overall happy with the build quality and love the keyboard
Temperature max seems ok but temp difference between the cores seems a little on the high side. Max temperatures during a OCCT 1.5hr test were as follows:
Core #0: 85C, Core #1: 71C, Core #2: 85C, Core #3: 73C
Running BIOS 1.0.2 at the moment, should I update to 1.0.8 before asking about possibility for a repaste given >10 degree diff between cores?
These are the numbers straight out of the box with no OC.
Thx -
i would update the bios, then run OCCT with overclocking enabled and then test, i have a feeling you might thermal throttle
-
Just got 17in R4 1080 and it seems to run a bit hot. I notice it throttling itself down at 94c and the temps drop aswel. Not sure what I'm going to do as I really like this laptop
-
i would try doing a repast and then just take it from there, if not return it or try to exchange it, which i did and im waiting for my exchange, its takes a few weeks though
-
Thanks, will do. Apologies for the silly question but how do I run OCCT with OC enabled?
-
It's OK it's OCCT is a program you have to download, which you could just google it, should pop right up
-
Ehh ya. I'm not looking forward to a repast. I don't do well working with small parts. I wonder if there is any place in az that I could take it to...
-
Thanks again, yep downloaded and ran OCCT 4.4.2 for about 1.5 hrs and got those max temps (Core #0: 85C, Core #1: 71C, Core #2: 85C, Core #3: 73C). I have been thru the HWinfo logs and can't see any thermal events triggered during the OCCT run. Do you know if this confirms that I didn't get thermal throttle during OCCT?
-
I just downloaded and ran firestrike with the new bios 1.09 I could be wrong but my temps seem to be a little better max temp was 70c with 4.1 OC in using liquid metal but i remember being in the 80s last night

I may have missed it .. but I thought there were two panel options for the 1080? Is that correct?
Currently I see.....
17.3 inch QHD (2560x1440) 120Hz TN Anti-Glare 400-nits NVIDIA G-SYNC Enabled w/Tobii Eye-tracking
Also if you purchased a 1080 over the Holiday ... what did you pay/deals?Last edited: Jan 4, 2017 -

I repasted my 17R4/1060 with LM and replaced the stock pads with fujipoly ultra. Running that same test, my max temps are 62,62,60,62. -
wow that's impressive. I have never done re-paste before so am bit reluctant. Do you think I should ask Dell support for a re-paste with max temps of 87, 80, 86 and 79 with a OCCT 30 minute test?
I also have the option of either upgrade BIOS to v1.08 or 1.09? -
Is thermal grizzly kryonaut a conductive paste? I'm looking for something nonconductive
-
Gabrielgvs Notebook Consultant
I'm still on 1.0.8. Dell may not repaste given that they have been informing people that these high temps are "normal". If they did agree, it's highly unlikely they'd use conductonaut and fuji as I did. Still, if you could get them to do it, any decent repaste should yield better temps than what you're seeing with the factory toothpaste. TBH, the job isn't horribly difficult, but not one you'd want to be your first repaste if you haven't done it before. -
What was Fuji you used?
-
No its not.
It is suggested to only use Kryonaut or Gelid Extreme. They yield the best numbers when it comes to actual "paste" and they both are nonconductive. -
You have to turn off SecureBoot first.
Then install Windows.
Then turn it back on. -
7820HK is essentially an overclocked 6820HK, the performance increase is negligible.
-
I have already turn off secureboot but i've got an error message "the selected boot device failed" maybe the usb key is not compatible with uefi ... I try all rufus option (gpt/uefi, mbr/uefi, ...) and fat32 or ntfs
-
Which version of Windows are you installing?
If its Windows 10, then you should not be using Rufus.
Windows Media Creation Tool does it all. -
First impressions of the new BIOS 1.0.9? Something relevant?
-
anyone received a new QHD screen without the white lines problem ? or is it still the same ?
-
Yes it is windows 10 iso from alienware website with service tag.

Fyi the 7700hq models are now rolling out and live on dells site, looks to be same start pricing (1499 for 1060gtx/7700hq, $1899 for 1070/7700hq. 7820hk still not officially up.
Sorry for the lousy screen cap. Limited res on this work computer.Attached Files:

I just jumped on the UK site and saw the 7820HK mentioned, navigated to the configurations page and it wasn't available. Went back to the previous page and it vanished... Could be dell making updates to the website as we speak.. or at least getting it prepared.
-
Sales rep confirmed they are still preparing for the launch, so probably.
As DeeX said, unless one does a lot of CPU intense tasks or has a 1080GTX, I am starting to question the value of the new cpus unless the problems with the qhd and heat have been fixed.
Fwiw, passmark numbers on the stock clocked cpus (they seem off somehow from just a 300mhz bump, maybe they overclocked their 7820? but from cpu-monkey):
7820HK - 9052
7700HQ - 8790
6820HK - 8236
6700HQ - 8216
