Sorry here it is! for some reason after a while the GPU power field in HWINFO greys out and then it won't record anything anymore :( Any idea why?

Yes indeed. Very nice. Thanks for posting the data. Wish more people would follow. :)

Looking forward to seeing your temps after your repaste.

These temps were completely stock. For some reason my OC profile didn't apply after restart for either CPU or GPU. They're so low I don't care anyway :)

Sounds amazing as I can see from almost 1 m and I am 43 years old. Are we really talking about the QHD 120 hz screen for the Alienware 17 R4 here?? AFAIK AUO has confirmed the striping problems, if they hadn't, based on your decription, I would have assumed this was solved by a panel replacement. But haven't asked for one as I believe it was confirmed they all had this problem. Really confused here :vbconfused: :vbconfused: :vbconfused:

Mine looks pretty great as well. Its the AUO1096 (hardware id) 120hz TN. The colors are not as sharp/punchy as an ips or igzo but I don't have any horizontal or vertical banding issues. I googled some tests and researched how to look for banding as I have not had a basic TN panel for nearly 7 years so I wasn't familiar with that issue before.

Have played Crysis 2 on MAX everywhere (ULTRA) on a non OC system (6820HK and GTX1080) and my average CPU temps are around 70, max around 80 and minimum around 60. Only a few degrees between the cores. I know Crysis is taxing on the system but not how much compared to titles today. AFAIKO my AW17 should be produced after the fixes where supposed to be put into production. Also using an external monitor which could affect.

Seems OK but but not great, you agree?

Crysis 2 is amazing still today, especially in ULTRA everywhere. Playing it again just to see how it was supposed to look :D

Seems strange, I also have the AUO1096. This seem to indicate that either not all QHD 120 hz panels are affected by this striping, or that some people just don't see it. I probably have good eye sight for someone being 40+ but do not consider myself to have any kind of superman vision so it is hard for me to think someone would miss this unless they didn't have it, which seems strange also as I believe AUO has confirmed it on all units?

Just to check, the only QHD offered by AW is the 120 hz GSync one, right?

    BTW, my QHD has:

Date Of Manufacture: Week: 0, Year: 2016

I would find 80 acceptable. TBH I would not mind <90 but I am getting 97 which is way too much in my opinion.

Has there been any reports if the current 17r4 refurbs from the Dell Outlet have the thermal pad/paste fixed?

How does iunclock get a hold of the noobs that cant pm? :) After 262 pages I haven't seen what the going rate for the service is. Like a previous post mentioned, we shouldn't have to send it to a "pro" who isn't in the situations we are (demanding wife, kids, job etc). The few hours we do get are important to not waste.

I ordered this laptop early november and have had very little time to mess with it. Dell has been less than receptive to do anything for me based on the 97 temps are totally normal stance. But at this point I figure if I'm in a position where I can throw a little more money at it and make this thing the beast it always should have been, I might as well. So might as well get the process started....

Have you OCed? I have not yet come around to that but probably will when there is need for it. Note sure how much that would impact the temperatures.

I really believe that some people just can't see the horizontal striping lines. I have replaced the screen 2 times and all has been affected. I also have a cousin to look at it and that he couldn't really tell but to me it was really obvious that they're there. Some people just can't see them. :geek:

I'll let you know in 2 days when i get mine. It is a refurbished 1070 6700hq qhd that was shipped out on dec 28 as a replacement. I know if you bought a new one it would most likely be alot better than when they first shipped but it will be interesting to see if they are doing anything with the returns before they resell them.

I'll be repasting so ill be able to tell you if it is stamped or pasted and if they changed the thermal pads or not.

    Holy ****!

Just repasted with conductonaught and its knocked 20C off my temps and they weren't too bad to begin with! Idle my laptop CPU now runs at high 20 - low 30C and i just ran the same OCCT test that hit 82C (on a good run) and it peaked briefly at 63C and then remained stable in the 50s! Max temp differential is 3C lol! This ****s unreal, I've not even tuned it yet!

Team LHz you guys rock! No way I could've done all this without you and your excellent help and advice!

    More screens coming soon!

Pretty chuffed with that mate, massive thank you to your guide! I wrote loads of notes and spotted a couple of things which you may like to add and I also had an interesting story with the TGC splattering onto the die and thermal tape! Thank god it was there!

I got photos of the whole lot and will do a writeup ASAP but I'll be away for a few days first as going back to work and its the Mrs' birthday tomorrow...

    Cheers! :)

So new development... Have had mine for under a week. Today I went from on the couch to bring it downstairs and as I put it under my arm (normal carrying position) it made a major rattle. I turned it to the other side, and the rattle went that way. Clearly there is a screw loose inside my computer. I think this will be the screw that breaks the camel's back...

Do you have discord? Or send me your email. You are not finding any info on the services, because I don't advertise it here. Never have and never will as that is not my intent on being on here. I only mention it generally and say to PM me. Zero business policy with me on NBR, unless it's in the NBR market place. :)

On behalf of Team LHz, you're very welcome and am glad to be of help.

It is recommended to run OCCT for at least an hour and also make sure that you are not throttling because your CPU shows at only being at 2.4GHz at the time of that screen shot while OCCT was still running.

Do you have TeamViewer? PM me and let me drive it...

Also, run it at 40x OC...how come it's set at only 39x? Just curious. :)

There is also already a guide for this.

    Glad to see cool temps....

    Hi Deex it's these:
Don't forget I'm in the UK

    Hey @iunlock

It's not throttling, if you look at OCCT it's configured to go idle at the end of the test for 5 mins, it's 10 and a half mins into the 15 min test so no problem there. I chose 3.9 because that's the exact settings I got up to before the repaste and I wanted to do a before and after first.

Where's the guide I checked the disassembly and overclocking threads again but can't see it. Will PM you for TeamViewer access, cheers

Does anybody have any way to contact someone from dell that is in the United States and will actually do their job? I ordered a 17 r4 4 weeks ago, they cancelled the order on me 2 weeks ago, because of an error in their system, and after spending hours and hours on the phone with them in the last 2 weeks, my gift cards have still not been refunded, and they will not reopen my order.

Good luck with that. I had the same issue and the giftcards never got refunded. They said they would be, but by the time the money was back in my account (assuming the gc's would have been refunded too) they would have been expired.

Today a Dell Tech replaced my heatsink with a new one. I had to wait for 2 weeks because the part was not in stock here in The Netherlands. Hey replaced the heatsink including the pads and yes it also included the new thinner 0.1mm ones!! An instant decrease of about 20 degrees on the CPU. Now I will repaste it again with kyronaut ^^

You will need some installation media for windows 10 as well as a product key. I think dell can provide you with a usb drive with windows on it or you can use one of your own usb drives with 4gb or more of storage space on it and create one yourself using the tool on this page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You will have to get a product key for windows 10 from dell though unless you have one on a label on your pc (I'm pretty sure you wont have one on your computer).

Call tech support or look up a guide on how to install windows if you don't know how to do it yet.

When you are done reinstalling download all your drivers and such from the support.dell.com page.

The last thing you will need to do is reset your bios settings. Should be able to get there by hitting f2 right after you turn your computer on.

It's not just the audio output to the speakers affected by this 'crackling' issue. The AW17 R4 in front of me has the same issue (despite a re-install of drivers) across the internal speakers, headphones and even when streaming over IP to a network connected amplifier.

The AW17 1080 in front of me was received on the 28th Dec and the stock temps were hitting 75 degrees (max) after running OCCT for about 2 hours... So it does appear that Dell have addressed the issue... although I was still getting a 10 degree temperature difference across the 4 cores.

I've yet to take this apart to 'adjust' the third leg of the processor mount, but will post the results once that has been completed (there must be a better way to address this?).

I received my 17R4 (1080) on 12/30, and had pretty much the same results. I suspect that it will take a little bit of work with the pads, and the arm bending mod, and I'll get my core temps evened out.

It appears that while Dell/Alienware has done an attempt to make the temps "reasonable", it will take the determined hobbiest, with some trial and error, to make this machine into the beast that it can be.

Thanks again iunlock, and the rest of Team LHz, and the many others who have put forth guides, techniques, advice, and other constructive bits on this thread, and the repasting thread.

Can those of you who have 6700hq run Cinebench R15 and log max temp and max cpu package power. Use Hwinfo64, Hwmonitor or another preferred monitor software CINEBENCH_R15.03
Do the same with wPRIME v1.5 if you have time. Run as adm and select 8 threads, Thanks.

Ran them both ... did the 1024mb data set for wPrime and only ran the CPU test in Cinebench

    Max recorded CPU temp: 72C
Max recorded CPU Package Power: 45.762 W

    Scores:

    wPrime: 207.273 sec
Cinebench: 685 for CPU / 95.60fps for OpenGL

Is that about what you see on yours? Mine is still on stock paste. Testing room about 22C

    Best,

received my 17 with the 1080 gpu today. and in 3dmark the gpu jumps to 90+ degrees the first second and sits there through the bench. i got a firestrike score of 10k whereas ppl with 1070 get about 14k score. i should be getting closer to 16k right? going to open up and repaste

    You can compare here http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/core_i7_6700hq/

HaHa, You know me Mobius :) I'm never going to touch any soldered processors from Intel in any form or shape!! My only soldered processor is in my phone, HaHa

I only tested [email protected] clock speed to see bench score and power draw vs. fully locked mobile [email protected]. It looks like the soldered mobile i7 FILTH are not as energy efficient as some claime  And Intel want more $$$ for their mobile i7 but offer less aka no TIM and IHS.
Tested same low BGA clock speed with my 6700K, but both wprime 1024M and Cinebench R15 benchmark tests I tested got a better score with much lower CPU package power. The result can be seen in pict.

    Cinebench R15: 699cb
    wPrime: 204.378 sec

Wprime 1024M maxed out at 31.1W in Cpu package power

Cinebench R15 maxed out at 28.1W in Cpu package power

WHY PAY MORE FOR LESS?

Sorry to hear that but yes that's deffo not normal. Stock with no repaste in the GPU I was getting high 60s worst case, Mid 50s after repaste. My current firestrike with slight CPU and GPU OC is 21695

Haha that's what was funny in that you would never touch a HQ, let alone bga with a 10 foot pole lol... Fun joke though rofl...

Nice stats.... Yea pretty sad when a 6700K can be gimped to HQ level and still beat it out in the areas the HQ should be shining... Power consumption and efficiency?

    It's such a shame...

Just had the worst experience. Ordered a 1070 from the Dell site and was shipped a 1060. Sad thing is that they won't even replace it, or offer a discount to account for the $300 difference. Not sure what to do at this point. Any advice on how to deal with their customer support?

Yeah, It looks like the low powered soldered mobile i7 filth are not as energy efficient as some claime  And Intel want more $$$ for their low powered mobile i7 vs. socket 6700K but offer less aka no TIM and IHS. Why need people pay more, but got less? Less powa and less energy efficient in fully use :notworthy: You shouldn't measure energy efficiency in idle state!!

Edit. @only4laptop Return it for refund!!
