I just played a bit with cinebench hwinfo and aida64. Got only 1200 and unfortunately high temps :( but throttled by power!
Pl1 is still at 45 and pl2 90w I will also try to increase it up to 110 but I thing then the thermal throttle will kick in. Hhmm lot to do with this machine.

What I have done is to stress the cpu with aida64. Oc profile 2 in acc. Temps about 80-90 and power throttle at 70-80w depends also on temps. No thermal throttle showed in hwinfo. Fan profile at full speed

No more adjustments until now. No undervolt.
I tried to uv with ts but can’t find the voltage offset. Where is it? On my old machine it was on main screen. Crazy. Because what I read ts is the best software to do things like that isn‘t it?

Also crazy: i cannot See any fan speed except acc. Why?
Not in aida64 and not in hwinfo

    Definitely use throttlestop
Undervolt your cpu and cache. I think it's under fivr button.
You'll notice much better scores in Cinebench.
My unit had a new heatsink and on its way back for a replacement and still hits 1168 with little throttling on Cinebench. Just has bad stuttering, high temps and cpu spikes on gaming.
    You should get better results.
@Papusan is the expert on this and check the threads for settings as theyve been posted before.

Is the UHD panel on the 17 R5 the same as the R4 (interested to know if it's still 100% AdobeRGB like the R4)?

Do not let the throttles kick in when you run Cinebench, rather, adjust the speeds so that you get max score but no throttles. If the throttles kick in they will be harsh and steal from your scores.

Maybe CB finishes too quickly and the PL1=45W does not kick in at all, so effectively you are still at 90W limits, however it is safer to choose any OC profile from the BIOS as it is only that action that unlocks the powers to 110W. Not sure about ACC which is a Dell app and could also be capable of setting power limits. BIOS is a safe bet though.

Hmm, then 1200 is a very good score. But to make it even better, try at least a 100mV undervolt. I use Intel XTU to set undervolt and multipliers (eg -140mV and 43x). I have also used TS but personally I much prefer XTU, I find TS weird.

I believe it is because Hwinfo is a free app, written by a single person who does not work for or care about Dell, and whatever hwinfo shows you, or does not, maybe random at the end of the day.

So, i got my Alienware r5 17 last thursday. And oooh boy i really got a troubled unit. Nearly dropped 3 grand on this machine and it leaves a bad taste.
I really hope its a "one of a kind trouble machine" but if i read all these messages on this topic...

    So what are my problems.

    - Bezel on my UHD screen above the Alienware logo is loose. The glue that holds it was already dried up.
    - Dead pixel, how is this even possible on screens nowadays? I owned 4 Macbooks before this, no dead pixels whatsoever! (The colors and contrast on the screen are awesome on the 4k screen btw!)
    - Insane lightbleed top left and bottom right.
    - Insane thermal throttling. I reckon my heatsink is unbalanced or something like that. Because my temps spike like 10 degrees on some cores. Already undervolted it by -0,125 and it helps a bit. But is still get spikes in the 97, 98 on some cores. Some stay at 85 / 87.

And to top it off? GPU temperatures of 90 degrees under load! Thats like insane, from what i read here most people get 70 or 80 at max. So i called Dell there gonna swap it for a new unit. Or atleast thats what they said to me last friday, didn't get any update yet. On the bright side thats good support, but i reckon for a 3 grand machine thats the least you should get.

If the second unit has the same problems, its going straight back and unfortunately i'm going to look for another brand. Its awesome build quality, and the machine looks the part it sure does! But i can't even imagine how bad the quality control is if i look at the machine they send me.

Make them give you a discount or upgrade something. Complete arrogance, no way they wouldn't have noticed the screen coming apart.

So I guess stock scores for cinebench range from 1150-1200. I'm seeing numbers in this range across many vids and posts.

Be very careful. It will take weeks to get new machine and by then you are out of the 14-day no questions asked refund period. If the next machine you receive is not good your options will be very limited.

Well, its very simple if the next unit isn't what they promised its going straight back. Trust me in the Netherlands there are no loop holes for company's that doesn't deliver what they promise. I have an additional insurance that can help me if there gonna give me a hard time.

But thats worst case scenario. I reckon the unit i got was a one of a kind i hope. Btw how long will it take for them to arrange the swap, i called friday, i have a case number and just phoned them because i haven't received any updates. They said they would mail or call me back but couldn't give me a timetable.

All I am saying, because I have done it, is that Dell have a 14-day, no questions ask refund policy, in the UK at least, and I presume also in the Netherlands. You return the machine and they do not ask questions. Your replacement may take many weeks to be delivered and by that time your 14-day exchange period has run out, It is not a loophole, it is what it is.

It would be much safer for you to return this one for full refund and order a new one separately. That way you have your 14-day refund period anew.

You will be ok the replacement unit will start the 14 day process again but if you’d like it in writing ask them ...

Re the screen did you order gsync or non gsync? I suspect you may have the sharp 4K display as they sometimes did have dead pixels.

With regards light bleed, the 4K screens do suffer more so than the qhd and fhd. But you can try taking the bezel off and carefully fitting it back - the light bleed is caused by pressure from the bazel not the screen but some screens suffer more than others.

If you ordered gsync then you have the well regarded auo 4K panel, an just unlucky with the dead pixel.

So glad I haven’t caved and bought the r5 I’m holding out for the next revision / gpu gen

I have a very similar issue bottom left and right corners, most of it went away when I pressed the bezel/screen lightly with my finger, it is mostly gone now.

In my case I asked them the exact question and they said no. The 14-day counts from the day of delivery and if you order a replacement it does not count as a new order so you miss the 14-day window and you miss a 3 weeks of warranty as well (because back then it took 3 weeks to be delivered).

    Hey thanks a lot @doofus99 and @Aristotelhs2060 and @dasachmo and @captn.ko for your help and answers :) I hope I don’t forget one :)
I will try that. Temps are still a problem. It would be better when I make repaste and repad. With oc2 in acc I saw that I already had 110w. But tomorrow I will try it with bios.
Power throttle kick in with 110w and throttle it down to 70-75w and temps from 80-95 but peaks. Maybe thermalthrottle and that’s the reason why I drop to 75w. But when I change back to no oc profile it increase to 80-85w and after this 28 s to 45 because of pl2. Should be ok. But why with oc2 drop down to 75 and in the same moment when I switch of oc it increase to 85?...stupid...
I have to do more trial :)

I think this is today’s normal :) also on tv‘s...bad they only want to make money. I also have some light bleed on the bottom. But I can’t see it with the black alien screen. When I boot ant the alienware letters will flash up I see this light bleeding on bottom. But I don’t send it back. :)

Thank you for the recommendation. Did a bit of reading and some people claimed the stock fans on that model is sort of weak. Should I buy new fans? When I originally built my ivy bridge desktop back in 2013 I replaced all the stock fans with performance fans for my cosmos II. Would it be a good idea to also replace the stock fans? Also I haven't found any real issues with my r5 so far so I guess I'm one of very few who completely lucked out other than the low score with my cinebench. No overclocking though but I assume throttling is the reason for the lack of scores. Darn the i9 and heating issues :p

After repaste with Gelid pads, K5 pro for white pads and LM, I am only getting current limit throttle. I can still get very rare temp spikes of 92C during heavy load only for two of the cores which also does not look to affect frequencies (hwinfo reports thermal throttle but it is not right and I am pretty sure it shows that every time temps rise over 90 indepedently if it is really causing thermal throttle, bios causes thermal throttle over 83C if I am not wrong). This may slightly affect my CB scores (I got up to 1370 (x43 and -145mV without much tweaking running apps and service) but suprisingly it does not seem to affect CPU frequencies. I am still not sure if this is normal because I reach 110W during benchmark (but I think you then get power limit throttle and not current limit throttle) without thermal throttle or if it is caused by the CPU VID which can reach the 1.5V. So, they are still offering me to send back for refund because of the strange current limit throttle (even them are not sure what is causing this and if it normal) and because my machine is still less than 1 month old. Even if get replacement, the new machine can have a CPU with high VID too and start from the beginning again? I can live with the current limit if it affects performance only slightly because I like this machine. So, what would you do?

Some of you are making me regret not getting the 4k(UHD) screen option =[. I was on a budget as I needed a laptop for school but had barely enough for my current set up. Mainly going to do some intensive video editing along side minor gaming (for now until winter break). But I know most games wouldn't play very well. As I understand 4k gaming isn't exactly where it should be at yet.

I haven't had time to play with the BIOS unlock any more, but I just ran into a new problem. I dusted off my TB16 Thunderbolt 3 dock with the hopes of being able to use the NIC and one of the displayports for one of my 2 4k external monitors (it isn't capable of 2x 4k @ 60hz, only 30hz). It sort of worked, but I am getting this weird issue where USB mice or keyboards freeze every few seconds. I figured it was the TB16 since that entire series of dock was plagued with issues. I bought a Startech mini thunderbolt 3 dock that supports 2 x 4k @ 60hz. The monitors are perfect, even through 10' DP cables. Same issue with the USB, though. It isn't just the USB on the docks, either. Even the USB ports on the laptop itself freeze when using them with mice or keyboards. Tried wired and wireless keyboards and they both have the same issue. They just freeze after a few seconds of usage for around half a second then unfreeze.

My XPS15 9550 had all sorts of issues like this until I replaced the killer wifi card with Intel. I have the Killer 1550 card on this laptop which is just a rebranded Intel. I tried removing it all together to see if it was the cause of the problem, but no luck. Anyone else have issues with TB3 peripherals?

So after a rousing chat with Alienware tech support they "do not support Thunderbolt docks of any kind". I was giving him a piece of my mind about shoddy support when he also told me that the TB3/USB-C port is also hard wired to the Intel graphics only. There is no way to connect a monitor to that port and have it go through the Nvidia graphics! Now I am fighting trying to find an HDMI cable that can handle 4k 60hz. None of the ones I have appear good enough. Guess I'll be returning the startech dock and sticking with a bunch of cables coming out of the AW17R5. Grrr!

A while back there was a post about Alienware Command Center being flaky. I received my system last week and it worked fine. I had FX, Fusion had power, fan, and audio controls and overclock display (I have the i7, so no OC controls); after just a bit of use ACC went almost completely dead (no FX tab, only inoperable power settings in Fusion). Many attempts at reinstall did nothing.

After a Windows refresh/reinstall (for unrelated problems) ACC was back (as expected). On that pass it worked; however after an update it fired up Windows Store and I didn't immediately log in. ACC immediately went south again.

After a second refresh (this time for ACC, since I'd accomplished nearly no setup on that pass) I immediately logged into Windows Store. ACC was fine, installed updates, and most of it worked. However, Fusion was still just power settings (operable, but nothing else).

Today a new ACC update (5.2.0.0) came out on the website and, with some trepidation, I installed it. Once installed it immediately pulled a bunch of components off Windows Store, and voila, fan and audio controls back and working. So, it looks to me like they're aware of the issues and making progress getting them sorted out. That, or I just had some particularly good luck and should count my blessings :)

One important thing in all this -- Windows Store is critical; if you're not signed into it, ACC is just not going to go well. I don't like that it works that way (I'm oldschool and really don't much like Windows Store) but it clearly does.

I had a number of bugs with ACC showing only fusion and library menus (could or not be fixed after restart). So I had to reinstall selecting modify default options. I will try the new update ( I knew from Dell it was coming) when I get back from holiday. I hope they did something for loading voltages too.

So its getting even better now, from friday till today i didn't hear a thing about my replacement unit. Last monday i did call just to check. Nothing to worry sir, its being forwarded to our escalation manager. He will call you back asap. So i thought, ok i'm just being impatienced. After still not hearing anything today, i thought ok let me just send them a message through facebook messenger. That worked the last time aswell. They responded back with, sorry we can only send a reminder to the escalation service. After 5 minutes someone called me back. That some progress, 4 days of absolutely nothing and now within 5 minutes someone calls...

So the conversation was a bit weird, the sir on the phone was really polite. He said to me, the problems your having aren't normal for such a expensive system. After that he told me my swap case was never picked up by human error. (Weird someone @ Dell told me otherwise on monday.) Ok you know this happens, i said human errors happens in such a big company and thought, ok now it will finaly be handled. Then he told me, i'm gonna proces a swap directly, i'm your dedicated person who will be in touch with you about it. If the swap is rejected you will get your money back. So that last sentence, i have a bad feeling about it. I bought this unit with a black friday discount and summer deal. If they give me my money back i have to pay more then 600 euros more for the same config. Its not my problem that they delivered me a faulty unit, and its really not my fault that i'm waiting almost a week now with no updates on Dell's side.

I'm getting kinda worked up, i should just let it fly and be positive for a good outcome, but the support is giving me some doubts about this otherwise awesome piece of equipment.

it seems that procedure is that the technical support department make a recommendation for a replacement, but then a different team takes over, called "Replacement department", and they may then reject the replacement ? I did not know they could do that.

I can see their point of view though, you cannot make money out of the deal, they cannot refund you money that you never have paid. They could however offer you the same discount if you were to buy the same / similar system again.

So today i got an answer that the swap was confirmed. I will get an UPS tracking code when it will be finished in the production line.
Kinda strange, i didn't get any order confirmation. When i asked about it, they couldn't give me it because its a zero € order.

They told me it would be delivered from another depot, with the text its a brand new unit. Is there anyone that has a similar experience with a replacement unit?
I knew that with my Alienware m14 the replacement unit was a completely new order and i could track everything from ordering till production and the shipment. Now i can't track anything, can't even see the specs of the replacement unit. They did tell me there the same and ofc it shouldn't be anything less then that.

well it would seem I have a major problem, and it also seems im not the only one.
5 of the cores are hitting 100c whilst the 6th and last is hitting 97.
to help combat this I have upgraded the bios from 1.1.6 I believe it was on to the latest version but it would seem the problem hasn't gone away.

what options are available ? I have 4yrs warranty + 4yrs accident damage, and this laptop is only 3 days old !

Just received my r5 after an excruciating month+ of multiple onsite visits and then the long wait for replacement. I didn't get any trackable information at all until the new unit shipped (was about a week and a half from the day they confirmed I was getting a new one to actually getting the UPS tracking, then 3 business days (5 days including weekend) for it to ship from china, clear customs, and get to me.

I was having the same disconnect issues on my USB ports with multiple devices (seemed like the ports re-connected every 10 seconds or so), fixed that by going to Device Manager, Universal Serial Bus Controllers, then right click on each item in the list to view properties, and if there's a power management tab unchecked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". After that I had no more problems with mice/keyboards/hard drives constantly reconnecting.

I'm still having major problems getting my Oculus Rift working, it was flawless on my previous 17 R4, but I get constant "tracking problems" that seem to be USB related on this R5. Happening on vanilla factory image as well as fresh install and drivers from dell's site. If anyone has advice on any USB issues, I'd really appreciate it, I've done hours of googling with no luck yet. I wonder if there's some kind of power issue or maybe I even have faulty USB controllers on my R5, but everything else seems to be working fine so i'm at a loss...

I recently bought an oculus but did not have time (mostly dealing with repasting and testing) to test it. I am new to oculus anyway. Do you want me to test anything special?

If you're able to set it up and use anything correctly, you've gotten farther than me. I can't get through the setup at all (worked fine on my 17 R4, nothing but "tracking errors" on the 17 r5). Have tried different USB ports, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, not sure what else to do. I'll have to hit up Oculus and Dell support probably, hopefully not another mobo replacement...

With a USB 3 stick the left port runs it at USB 1.1 speed while the right runs at 3.0 SuperSpeed according to HWInfo...

That's good info, I've been using a type-C hub out the back and out the left side (I know the hub works, was great with the R4 and my wife's Inspiron 7577), but I'll try a USB 3.0 out the right side tonight, and look at HWInfo on all of them, thanks!

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/8ppeq9/update_dell_broke_my_laptop_while_fixing_my/

They sent out a tech to fix the heating issues...you know what happened. Here's what I said to them once the tech finished destroying the laptop:

"It's not just the logo that is not working, the Alien head, touchpad, keyboard and macro keys all do not work sometimes or display wrong colors if they do. The bottom silver cover of the laptop is scratched by your technician. The heatsink screws are broken leading to uneven heatsink placement, causing further thermal damage. The technician put the WiFi antenna cables back incorrectly, they are under immense pressure from the wrong way the tech put them back in. Thus, they need to be put back correctly and the card and leads need to be replaced because I don't want such delicate components that were handled in that way being literally crushed in my "new" machine. The display has more backlight bleed than before the tech came, I saw him take apart the display which isn't even required for a repaste! The screen looks horrible now. The lower left side of the palmrest was chipped by the technician."

I ask for a replacement...the new machine was as good as a scratch and dent machine after the tech was done with it. This is what I get: "After the case was reviewed by the exchanges team they determined that the exchange will not be an option. How would you like to proceed?" They also took the refund off the table...WTF. Also, another problem had cropped up, the left side USB port was only running things plugged into it at a 1.1 speed while the right ran the same drive at 3.0 SuperSpeed.

I was done with this BS. After consulting my legal team, they advised me to send the machine in for repair with the understanding that I'd keep the old R4 in the meantime and that the AW manager I spoke to would reimburse costs of a third-party repaste and would send a cooling pad as he promised to do previously. If this STILL didn't fix the issue, legal action would be pursued.

I communicated this to them and it looks like the threat FINALLY spurred them into action.

"We understand your current position and confirm that we will take all actions required for this PC to go through a "white glove" test while at our depot. We will submit the DPS including all the pictures you sent us and clearly stating that the whole PC should be reviewed before being sent back to you by our Alienware L3 tech at the depot. We wish to avoid any legal actions.

We understand your frustration. That is why we are working towards a solution for you. The white glove means that we will have our L3 do a thorough check and make sure the PC is pristine. We will check: All connections. Broken internal plastics. Scratched internal plastics. Scratched chassis. Thermal modules. AlienFX (Alienware Logo) We will submit all the pictures you have sent us to them.

We hear you. We will add all those notes and pictures to the escalation that will be sent to our depot personnel for them to make sure the PC is as new when it leaves our facilities. Including, of course, the thermals. Our management team, along with the depot L3s will make sure the PC gets back to you in better shape than it currently is. Never worse. We will request pictures of the PC before it is shipped back. That way, we'll make sure we have full control over what is done at the depot. We know this has been said many times already, but we truly are sorry for the inconveniences you've had to go through with the techs we've sent in the past. We want to make it right for you, and we'll continue aiming to that until we achieve a final satisfactory resolution."

    So...that's it for now.

Oh wow... that sounds horrible...incredible what Kind of Problems you have. And the technician???...unbelievable...what a shame.

At my alienware r5 I have not this big problems yet. Only temps a bit too high. But it is the same on all. Also the same for the acc.
The only thing I was confused about is my touchpad. Sometimes my mouse jump from one point to another when I slide with my fingers cross the touchpad. It is annoying. But what could it be? I still have the newest version installed...
Anyone else there with this problem?
Should I call dell? Hhmm i dont want that a technician disassembles my new alienware...and after that it is worse than before...or other things get worse.

l4k3rkb's experience sounds like a nightmare. If anyone in the future has the same problems as me with Oculus and USB - I did two things and now have Oculus working perfectly, not sure which fixed it (but i'm guessing it was the 2nd):
    1. Disabled USB sleep while plugged-in in advanced power settings
    2. Switched USB ports and hubs, I spread them out to have the headset on the right USB 3.0, one front sensor on the left, then the other front and the back on a USB-C hub connected to the back USB-C port. Again, not sure why it worked fine on the Alienware 17 R4 and an Inspiron 7577, but there you have it.

    Hi at all

I just make some tests with cinebench and my max score is 1350. but iam still at the beginning. Iam very New in oc or uv.
1350 was @4,3ghz, Core voltage of 1,25v and -150mv uv. I adjusted the frequency and core voltage only in acc because iam not sure how to change the frequency in ts? I tried with core ratio but nothing happens. The undervolting I did in ts!
At this values I had about 80-85w and high temps over 90 and some smale tempthrottle.

My question is now how should I adjust this core voltage? In oc1 Standard Profile of acc it is at 0.9v and no uv.
is the voltage the same when I say core voltage = 1.2 an uv=100mv = 1.1v and in second core voltage at 1.1 undervolt 0. Is this the same? Or have the core voltage and uv nothing to do with itself?
And what’s the best for core voltage? Undervolting maybe 150mv but where have to be the core voltage in this case? Hhmm

OMG... So many really horrible decisions made by people demonstrating unprecedented stupidity. This is just one of them. It's difficult to rank levels of stupidity in leadership, but I'm sure the imbeciles calling the shots on things like this don't even realize what abject failures they are. Nothing surprises me about bad decisions and failures with Alienware though. They've been on a collision course with death for a while now.

Taking an essential system support software module like AWCC and making it a UWP app that is reliant on Windows Store reflects intellectual bankruptcy on an order of magnitude that is totally unforgivable.

I was trying to adjust the overclock settings in advanced menu within the ACC. Even though the UV works, I am not sure if the core voltage changes at all. I do not know if anyone else has more experience on that.

ACC also does not allow UV more than -100mV unlike TS. But if you undervolt more you will more than possible get blue screens or freezes when used with frequencies over 4.3GHz (if fact you may rarely get freezes even with 4.3GHz and -100mV)

That's totally wrong I installed AWCC from Store and only issue with Macro keys won't detect or work properly.
With Win Store we have better control and constant driver updates are eliminated during win 10 upgrades because of UWD driver framework being compatible across newer versions.
Newer isn't always better these days! So once everything works, disable WU using WUMT script and forget updating.

Just played far cry 5 with ultra settings in 4K.No oc and no uv. Wow what temps...horrible...cpu complete at tempthrottle 100 degrees...wow. Gpu Full power 180w at Max 81degrees this is ok i think mit the best but ok.
    Pch at 78.
that sucks. I will try it with uv again but I don’t think that it is enough to bring the temps down. Maybe repaste with lm.
The only good think: no stuttering or something else. The game runs fine! But temps...

I always said fc5 is the gold standard to test the temps. It causes high temp spikes unlike most benchmarks. This is how everything started for me. Even though you can get high temp spikes (even with LM), you can check the average temps too. How's the average temps?

High temp spikes in fc5 are instant lasting 1 sec or so. Fans fail to react due to short time( I do not believe it is due to imbalanced or not proper heatsink especially after repaste). What is more important is to make a log with hwinfo while playing fc5 and check if there are any real throttles (drop in frequencies lower than 2.9GHz). By the way, hwinfo may report thermal throttle but this is not always the case. The only way is to check if there are any drops in game fps and hwinfo log core frequencies during gameplay.

Ok i set my frequency to 4ghz with Auto core voltage and -150mv offset and my temps are about 80-90 some peaks up to 100. thing that’s better. If I go up to 4.3 ghz the temps increase up to 95. too much.
I have done this with acc and ts. Gpu temp at max 80 with 180w. Looks ok
Problem with ts is if I apply the offset voltage it also changed the clock ratio as set on the right side but I don’t know why? It is not activated. Crazy. Someone who knows how I can adjust only uv and not core ratio with ts?

Hhmm average i didn’t look at I set the graph and checked the lines

And second core is really bad! The highest temps about 15-20 degrees higher than the other once. I think I have to open the box and check the heatsink

Yeah its brings a lot of implications being forced to use windows store components. People that want to turn for example automatic updating off cant use the ACC in this case as well.
