I don't use AWCC to OC. Never have, never will. It sets the OC like the BIOS where your all core OC is not the same as single core OC. I even say in my post that if I set the all core multiplier in TS (Throttlestop) to 5.0 or above that in HWInfo and Riva it will not show over 4.9. Did you even read my initial post?. Nowhere in it is AWCC mentioned.

What exactly is your findings on the cause? Do you think it is a bad batch of Mosfets, or bad soldering joints? Or maybe the way power is directed though the Card?hmscott and SlickDragon like this. -
Ah, my bad! Must have got it mixed up in my head, thought you had said you tried AWCC and it wasn't working so you tried TS, which didn't work either. So in my case, if HWinfo is showing 4.99 on all cores then I'm safe to assume that my 5ghz overclock in AWCC is sticking.

has anyone else run into the problem of your gpu downclocking really low while in a game. It has happened to me several times where my 2080 will be running like a champ and then boom outta nowhere it downclocks to like 300-450MHz for a couple of minutes and then jumps right back to where it was. This is without any thermal or voltage limits being hit.
What makes it even weirder is that I can benchmark this thing all day long in FS, Timespy, Kombustor, etc.... and it doesn't do this. Only in games ( the only two games I have played since getting the laptop, Division 2 and Metro) -

EDIT: I would highly appreciate it, if this image isn't used to do some "Threaten" tech support, I posted it here, because of toxicity. I don't want to look bad on the alienware tech support guys as in "Look at this crybaby, went out and direclty posted it online to rant about it".
I am well aware that these guys do whatever that they can to fix the issue, It just happens to be that my laptop is a very important asset to me, so having to wait an extra month for it, made my temper go up.
Thank you
EDIT 2: Took out the "proof" image out for reasons stated above. It was just to prove my point, not the actual explanation of the issue, which I did earlier, only to get flamed.
You can probably still find the image, and once again if you do, please don't use it anywhere else.Last edited: Mar 29, 2019SlickDragon, Ashtrix, Lantea and 19 others like this. -

thx bro, that's all we wanted to see. Not doubting you, but such serious matters always need to be backed up by seeing such messages. I feel you man, I am using my wife's 5 year old computer since 10 days and am literally dying here typing on this old Dell Vostro 14 all day long. I know how it feels, at this point, if I were you, I would get a refund and look elsewhere or hang in there for a month if you *really* like this laptop.

First time making an account. Long time lurker.
Background info. I ordered two 51m systems on March 12th to replace two underperforming workstations.
Original delivery was 3/26.
Delay 1: Ship date of 3/29 delivery April 1-4. I was told this delay was for a parts shortage.
I have been calling daily since 3/26 to confirm my systems are on track for a 3/29 ship date.
Called into Dell 3/28 and the rep confirmed my systems have been built and that the delay is for a quality control issue and my systems are undergoing testing.
Delay 2: Spoke with a online chat rep today where I was informed my ship date has been moved to 4/04.
This chat got a little odd. I was told it was because of part shortage. I then proceeded to say that a phone rep confirmed yesterday that my systems are built and that the real issue is quality not a part shortage. The chat rep then proceeded to confirm that it is a quality issue with part J5F37. I asked what part this was and was told they don’t have access to part description only part number.
Do what you will with this info, I just figured that I may be informative with this information. I forgot to screenshot as my blood pressure is still elevated after finding out about the 2nd delay.
Edit: After seeing the above posts if J5F37 is the part number for the motherboard I will be canceling my order.

The auo screen gets a contrast of 1000:1-mark on notebookcheck .. the LG Phillips got 500:1 but better colours just .. so auo panel may not be too bad I guess what looks good to me may not to everyone else.
I do prefer the LG Phillips 144 gsync thou over the qhd panel in the r4/5 as blacks look blacker and colours are certainly better and make the qhd panel colours looked washed out in comparison ... -
Hey guys I would like to join the club,
I have hade my Area 51-M (Lunar white) for about 2 weeks now, ordered it through HIDevolution and picked it up at one of their locations nearby ( Great company) below are some brief specs
- 9900k-2800 ( CPU is delidded, a 8700 was taken out and an 9900k from the box was put in, I still have the i7 sticker on)
- 40GB ram (already came with 8 so I put in another 32GB vengeance)
- 2 500GB Samsung 9700 evo plus m,2 SSD cards
- 1TB SSHD
- AHCI booted from one of the m.2 SSD cards
- Intel AC9260 ( even though people say its the same as the killer I saw enough bad flak to stay away)
- upgraded thermals which includes the repaste and pads
- 1080P 144Hz screen W/Tobi
- added heat sinks for the 2 SSD cards
- Windows 10 pro
- 2 year premium warranty
- 2 year accidental
- 30 day pixel guarantee
I also opted to get the backpack made for the Area 51m and the quality on that thing is pretty damn good. Ordered some different cable ties to try and manage the mess that comes with the AC adapters.
I have been messing around with overclocking and have bounced around between Awcc, XTU and TS and as of right now I only have TS installed for the CPU and MSI Afterburner for the GPU. I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the undervolt and added volts to work in XTU and then there is Awcc....for some people it has worked but for me that thing is a disaster.
I had some early issues cloning my SSD and making it my C drive and as of now I am still unsure how I resolved the issue but I got a good laugh when I called Alienware support and they told me the Samsung 970 evo plus cards were not supported and that I should return them and get a different brand.
When performance mode was greyed out I was told some of the system configurations are unable to support that feature in the bios, turns out all I needed to do was reset the bios, pretty depressed about the bios still though.
I have done all I can to keep the 9900k cool by adding thermal upgrades and I have to say I am pretty damn impressed, the beast runs very cool.
I was lurking in the background of this forum for about a month trying to grab all the info I could but I have been pretty active on Reddit ( not much info there concerning this machine)

I don't see why they can't do that. Tell them as much as you love Alienware, you've had bad experiences with regards to backlight bleeding in the past and don't want to go through the hassle of receiving the laptop then returning it wasting your and their time, maybe that would encourage them to get their act together because honestly, this should be done standard by any laptop manufacturer in 2019. The issue is not the screen, it's the bezel once tightened, it creates extra pressure which leads to light bleeding but they're just too lazy to care or check.SlickDragon, mason2smart, Lantea and 2 others like this. -
Is it after BIOS 1.3.2? I noticed this after updating to it. In particular, it seems to happen when the power draw is too high. It happens consistently if I run FurMark after 10 or so minutes. Never used to happen on 1.3.1.SlickDragon likes this.

Forgive them, @QUICKSORT, for the fanboys know not what they do...
If you've been following this thread, you've witnessed this kind of behavior before. Search back in this thread...there was a time...where someone, somewhere, reported that their A51M went up in smoke...and the first thing the fanboys did was to place themselves in the roles of armchair attorneys, attempting to dissect every word, phrase, and actual or proposed action that the poster wrote. The fanboys pointed the finger at the victim, stating that he must have done something wrong...it was his fault, they decried! HE WAS THE VILLIAN, NOT DELL!!!
It couldn't POSSIBLY have been that Dell was up to their "old tricks" (i.e. poor QC) again...as if THAT had never happened in the past. NAY!! They ruthlessly cast aspersions upon the victim and deflected any talk of Dell being at fault.
Those who opposed them were scorned. Allegations of "conflating" the issue were bandied about, even as more cases of "conflagrating" A51M's came to light (or dark, whichever color the unit may have been).
So please realize this...there are many here who, like me, have empathy for you and the situation that you find yourself in...and it is we who appreciate the information that you have bestowed upon us. The fanboys cannot be saved...pay no attention to their ignorant ways....but please, continue to share your experiences with the rest of us who truly wish to find enlightenment.SlickDragon, Rei Fukai, VoodooChild and 6 others like this. -

Did you ensure you change the Graphics Card power management from Optimal to Adaptive?
Right click on your desktop then choose nVIDIA Control Panel. Go to Manage 3D Settings from the left pane, then scroll down a bit until you see power management. If you see it's set to OPTIMAL which is the default setting when you install a driver. That's your issue.
Optimal Power means when there is no draw on the screen, the GPU clock speeds is set 0 MHz to save power and then ramps up once it needs to. Sounds great on paper, works like crap. This is the number one reason why anyone might experience crappy performance from their nVIDIA GPU. What's worse, is that's the default setting in the nVIDIA Control Panel after you install a new driver often leading people to blame the driver for bad performance when it's just the fault of nVIDIA's clowns.
Set the power management to Adaptive which puts the GPU at lower clock speeds when no GPU intensive apps are in use and it would ramp the clocks up when needed. That actually works. It's the best balance between getting lower heat from the GPU and good performance in games.
When benchmarking, for the optimal results, it's best to set the power management to High Performance.
Mind you, after you change the power management to whatever you set it to, a reboot is mandatory for the new clocks to take effect.
