Okay so I just got my unit and the bezels are scratched (also a small one on the right of tobii) as well as generally not incredibly well cleaned...
I don't know what I'm going to do about it, still haven't booted up the computer, let's see if anything else goes wrong I guess.

You do realise we have seen 2-3 messages with different photos of the burned out VRM, right? What Donald subsequently called MOSFET.
-
The Alienware support exchange or the burnt out VRM? Because we have seen plenty of evidence of the melted VRMs. I just cannot understand what exactly it is you need proof on after all the various messages detailing the issue, and some with photos too.
-
You do know what a VRM is made up of right?

Before we get overly excited about recalls, we need to recall other examples from the recent past:
https://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-confirms-global-recall-replacement-galaxy-note-7-faulty-battery/
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_recall
From that article:
A product recall is a request from a manufacturer to return a product after the discovery of safety issues or product defects that might endanger the consumer or put the maker/seller at risk of legal action.
The recall is an effort to limit ruination of the corporate image and limit liability for corporate negligence, which can cause significant legal costs. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to determine how costly can be releasing to the consumer a product that could endanger someone's life and the economic loss resulting from unwanted publicity. Recalls are costly. Costs include having to handle the recalled product, replacing it and possibly being held financially responsible for the consequences of the recalled product.
A country's consumer protection laws will have specific requirements in regard to product recalls. Such regulations may include how much of the cost the maker will have to bear, situations in which a recall is compulsory (usually because the risk is big enough), or penalties for failure to recall. The firm may also initiate a recall voluntarily, perhaps subject to the same regulations as if the recall were compulsory.
According to the US Gov, there have been no recalls for Dell/Alienware

If there was a recall, it is entirely voluntary. There has been nothing formally promulgated via the consumer product safety regulators.
The Area 51m failure rates have not crossed that deminimous threshold where legally mandated recalls have been instituted. Until that occurs, individual buyers will need to pursue relief via their warranties.

Quick question. When you're focusing on Firestrike score, does CPU matter at all for overall score or is it purely GPU?
Curious as I've been working on getting my 9700k/2070 score up but seem to not get near my highest score even with higher core/memory, which is really odd...
For example my highest score is about 19.3K, this was with about +163/+450ish.. if I run Firestrike with +171/600+ I dont even hit 19k now, but close..
Any tips you can give me? Have a replacement on the way, just trying to see what this machine can do.. hopefully the TDP upgrade for 2060/2070 comes soon.SlickDragon likes this. -

-
Awesome and good job on your score, I did see that a while back.
Now onto going after the 30771 graphics. It's impressive that we're dealing laptops here eh? Pretty neat. -
Well in my case I kept the CPU at 50x while other scores above mine were running 52x and 53x so I had to compensate to make up for that using my GPU. This is because I haven't got around to tuning the CPU yet as I was just after the GPU yesterday. As for your system, every silicon is different so it's really trial and error to see where you're unit is the happiest. There is no universal set value with this stuff and it's all about putting in the time to get familiar with your vehicle.
Congrats on your new laptop!SlickDragon and Kormi like this. -
Perhaps...but if @QUICKSORT 's MB went south, and it was tied-in with the MBs in this recall, then it stands to reason that there are others, already installed...already in shipped units...ready to BURN!
Btw...I heard Dell has a new theme song...though my information is unconfirmed, of course:
Go to 3:20 for when the A51M does its thing! -
I am pretty interested to see if some thermal pad replacement and reapplication can push the system further. My 2080 seems to not be able to go over 29k yet will clock +150 core and +450 mem. You are right about the 8700k/8086k in this system. It's perfect.

Oh wow I just noticed that you're running an 8700K in the unit. Nice! I'm tempted to put in the 8086K maybe today... hmm.. The 9900K is nice and all, but in this system far from the most ideal due to it being a red amber cole no matter what you do to it. The 9900K could be ran at lower frequencies and it'll be just fine thermal wise, but pushing it to the limits that we all want to ...it ain't going to happen without being in the red. It's not the laptops fault as it has a pretty good cooling system, strong fans etc... but I'm all for the 8700K in this beast as being the most practical and balanced IMO.
Keep at it .. you can do it.
This unit maxed out around there. I focus more on the clocks.ssj92 and EepoSaurus like this. -
It seems your VRMs are getting hot. We also know that the VRMs get too hot and they blow. Chances are it is related. Since the GPU is on a removable card you may be able to repad the VRMs?

Oh okay, so CPU does matter quite a bit for Firestrike scores?
Any idea why I would be getting lower scores with higher OCs? I could understand if it was thermal throttling, but when I run FS with +163/+500 GPU temps seem to stay around 56C.
Just not sure what else to do since I cant seem to replicate my best score while OCing higher..
Suppose I could try and OC my CPU some more as I think the 19.3k score I got was at 5-5.1Ghz, I'll have to go back and check.. -
I appreciate it. I agree on the 9900k I think they put it in to show they had the "best" but you are right the cooling isnt where it needs to be for the guys that want to get the most out of them. We can keep hoping for a vapor chamber to save the day!iunlock likes this.

That is not the record for 2080 Notebook, as 3DMark is recording the 2080 Notebook GPU was in use for the run in error. That run is the result of using the 2080 Ti in the eGPU, not the built-in 2080. 3DMark frequently gets their scoring screwed up when an eGPU is involved. If you expand the secondary GPU sections you will see the 2080 Ti. Probably the only way to get 3DMark to record it accurately would be to disable the 2080 Notebook GPU in Device Manager so that 3DMark Systeminfo doesn't find it when it is doing the hardware scan.Last edited: Mar 29, 2019SlickDragon, Papusan, Ashtrix and 4 others like this.

I believe you. Just relax. There are some major elitists around here. One reason I don't come here much anymore and I'm enjoying my desktop.
I've seen it on the [H] also. The ones with the least disposable income are always the ones who suffer the most when things like this happen.
Does everyone here seem to think that we all have $4,000 burning a hole in our pocket and not care if it goes up in smoke just because "it didn't happen to me, therefore it's fake"?
Just like those airheads on Xtremesystems who verbally harassed me when they said CPU degradation is a myth. And even Intel is partially to blame for removing "functional limits" and "Non functional limits" from their old datasheets (I posted proof of this on OCN).
NEWS FLASH, just because someone has more money than someone else does NOT make them smarter than someone else!

I'd imagine you had to Max out with the RAM options to get it to cost that much ($5000 without "upgrades"). Otherwise that base price doesn't make sense.I say that because I got basically a maxed out CPU, GPU, and display for 3.5K
Also you pay extra for HIDs cooling upgrades to review them and compare to your own? (Why else pay for them if you knew you were going to open it up)SlickDragon and Vasudev like this. -

Okay, so I could still use some help with an issue that is plaguing my Area 51M. When I am playing Apex Legends, I regularly lag out. But what's weird is that my character can no longer move, but I can watch other characters actively moving/shooting for about 5 seconds before the full network lock up. I end up sitting there for about 15 seconds unable to do anything, and then everything suddely resumes like nothing is wrong. Does anyone have any idea about what could be causing this?
I believe someone previously mentioned the Killler Control Center that windows 10 automatically installs could be causing this. I uninstalled that, but there may be other components I need to disable in services or something? I wasn't exactly clear on the full steps to take.
To clarify, this is affecting only my computer. I have other computers on the same network at the same time in my party in game, and they are experiencing no lag. So it's definitely something up with this Area 51M. Thoughts?
I could really use some help. I am at my wits end. Made me lose a big kill game the other day because it lagged me out right in front of another team, and I was just standing there.c69k likes this. -
I had this exact issue with my 51m with multiple other PCs on the same network that weren’t experiencing anything. What fixed it for me was a fresh windows install and installing the “Driver Only” for the killer networking.SlickDragon likes this.

Try installing it again and disabling "Advanced Stream Detect.' This is the option that seems to be causing issues in Apex for a lot of people, myself included. Turning it off fixed it for me.SlickDragon likes this. -
I have reinstalled fresh already. Didn't install it. Windows 10 installed it automatically. Still happening after removing it.
I have disabled it. Let's hope it fixed it! Fingers crossed. -
Happened on 1.3.1 and 1.3.2
Will try this later, Thanks!!! -
Was done by HID before I got the laptop and they put pads in the places that Dell missed.
Will also try lowering my OC even though I am not hitting voltage or thermal limits. I let Afterburner run its built in OC scan and set a custom curve. I then added +134 clock and +200 mem on top of that curve. It is happening with my GPU hitting between 70 and 75. Thermal limit is 87.
Wish MSi Afterburner and Riva Tuner OSD would show the wattage being pulled by the GPU like it will for the CPU.Last edited: Mar 30, 2019SlickDragon and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
