At that point just get a thin and light with a gtx 1080 and still be fine at 120-144hz while saving $$$

Als gpu boost 3.0 will OC the card of you've selected a voltage curve where it can OC the gpu further. The voltage will remain the same but boost can vary from an extra 10 MHz all the way to 79Mhz with the same voltage curve. GPU boost is the New cancer that also will **** up your clockspeed/boostspeeds.Mr. Fox likes this.

Only 10% gain in performance compared to the GTX 1080. No way a single RTX will defeat SLI 1080 as some people and notebookcheck stated

Did anyone else here order their Area-51M from Dell.com? My order status page says "Your custom-built item is complete" and I don't know how long it's been at that status.
-
Glad you mentioned that. Mine says the same thing. If memory serves that means it's built and ready ship. You can always ask dell and see what they say. I'll do so later today when I get home.
-
Already did and they just gave me the same shipping date as what's listed there, didn't have anything to say about it. I'd be curious if your particular representative you speak to has something different!
-
I'll report back once I do. Chances are they will say the same thing. I'll email the rep that helped me with order.yggdra.omega likes this.

10% is disappointing for this hardware. I can see people who have 1080 actually not missing out on anything. Only reason I'm getting this unit is because if the Mobo bites the dust and I'm out of warranty, I can always salvage the CPU and just build a desktop. It won't be a total loss.
-
If that's the only reason, why not get a $1k used 1080 laptop and then if/when that dies just buy a sub-$500 i9 9900k?
-
I rarely buy used as I've had bad experiences. Not unless I buy something that I consider quickly disposable. I want longevity on these devices as I plan to use them for as long as I can.
-
I’m am really starting to think about CNX my order. These reviews look horrible for these RTXs. I mean 10% are you joking NVIDA?
Anyone already canceled their order?

RTX is a pure joke even on desktops. 2080 is “ok” and getting decent performance on AAA titles. Not sure it might we worth selling a 1080 laptop just to get. But being a power user I probably will. If I were buying because I didn’t have a high end mode I’d buy one with a 2080. -
I really don't understand these kind of replies. If you wanna cancel your order just do it?
I'll wait for official reviews and a performance gain is a performance gain. RTX cards will more likely gain way more fps on higher resolutions. (Also discussed in the linked youtube video.)
I'll bet this machine will get pretty good thermals out of the box, the cooling design looks pretty good, no freaking tripod anymore.
With a good repaste it will be a monster hopefully. And if not, just return it in the return window.Darkhan likes this. -
Does Dell accept returning of the unit even you repasted it?Last edited: Jan 30, 2019

Yes, in the past I returned repasted machines without any problems. Shouldn't void your warranty. But nowadays, I'd much rather avoid the headaches entirely and simply wait for real reviews and benchmarks before pulling the trigger. Looking at the cooling system of the Area M51, I seriously doubt Dell was able to deliver a good solution here. Hence I'm gonna wait.propeldragon, Vistar Shook and FrankieFrank like this. -
Since the CPU and GPU are not soldered, even if you are out of warranty, it would be cheaper to replace the mobo for ~$400 than move the CPU to a new desktop. You cannot build a decent desktop for as cheap as it would be to replace the mobo. Now, if it had a soldered CPU and GPU and the motherboard crazy stupid expensive, that's a different story. The fact that this machine is not a disposable BGA turdbook is what makes it an attractive proposition.Rei Fukai, Vistar Shook, Ashtrix and 3 others like this.

Well I ordered the mid spec i7 9700k/2070/144hz config. Expected date is 20/2. I will give it a hammering when it arrives and if the performance is no better than my desktop 1070 then it is going back. My plan is to sell the desktop and laptop and just use this (have an omen 15 as well as a desktop)
-
jarrodstech video shows it's the cpu bottleneck that cripples the performance. the difference between the two gpus doubled in 1440p. question is if it's worth it buying an rtx2080 with just a fullhd panel...
-
I am in the exact same boat right now. Ordered a 2080 and 9700k and I want to order an external monitor for it. Leaning 1440p 144hz, but want to get a monitor the 2080 can really make good use of. Not sure if a quality 1080 would be better.

Check out that Asus ROG PG27UQ, it's 4K HDR and 144Hz

Life advice needed from you beautiful folks.
I called Dell yesterday trying to see what kind of deal they could work out for me. I qualify for basically every discount under the sun, but I wasn't going to buy unless the deal was real nice. They offered me 5% off, then came back with 10% off. Of course, I have 8.75% tax in my state, so it was basically a wash there.
I was looking for i7-9700, RTX 2080, 16GB ram, 144hz GSync Panel. I forget the hard drive option I selected, but I'm sure I'll buy an NVMe for the main drive and a SSHD or two for the other slots on on the side. I told them $3000 or less before tax. They said no, I said alrighty Imma wait on reviews then bud.
So, I went and bought an Asus Rog GX501 with 1080maxq and i7-8750h for $1650 shipped New/sealed. I was happy with my purchase. Though I've seen reports of 'sploding batteries... So there is that.
Enter Dell employee calling me about 20 minutes ago. He says "$3200 AFTER TAXES MY MAN" and I told him I'd call him back. Is this thing gonna be worth double the price??
Pros:
Dell Support is better than Asus Support
Long time dell/alienware buyer
GTX2080 full on is much more powerful than 1080maxQ
i7-9700 is much more powerful than i7-8750h
Its freakin white and looks ridiculous
Upgrades/easier to replace parts
Easy to service
Is a descendant of my first insane laptop, the M17x R1.
Cons:
Price (2x ROG)
Size (...2x ROG?)
Weight (...2x ROG!)
Unlikely to be able to upgrade screen panel according to Frank Azor in the future if I want to go to QHD or UHD
What I do??? -
If you're trying to get the best deal, then no this isn't worth it. Wait for reviews to come out with detailed benchmarks before making a decision if you're still undecided on the $$ alone.
-
just out of curiosity: are the US prices before taxes on the AW homepage? because then it's even cheaper here in Austria
2700€ (with 10% off coupon) for a 9900k, rtx2080, 144hz gsync including taxes -
According to Google, 2700AUS is 1956.49USD... I could fly to Australia and buy one for the same cost? :O

Good luck getting warranty repair on the Asus. One good thing about Del is the warranty support/repair. Every now and then someone has a hiccup but the public internet doesn’t always know the truth to the claims when people come here to complain. I can tell you Asus warranty is horrible.VoodooChild likes this. -

is it just me or is the RTX seriously underwhelming? there is hardly any good reviews out there for RTX 2080 even though the NDA was lifted for few days. seems to me people aren't that interested in RTX for laptop. only a few MQ laptops got reviewed and even those are unimpressive.
-

People have complained about desktop rtx being bad. If you turn raytracing off there is a decent increase in FPS in some games. It is one of the most underwhelming next generation gpu’s, yes. What’s bad though is they can’t keep them in stock.raz8020 likes this. -

The more I'm reading...the less excited I am to upgrade my GTX 1080 laptop. When I upgrade a laptop, I like to feel a big difference that makes it worthwhile, this is not looking to be the case here -
I would suggest reading the fine print on voiding the warranty for the Area 51m before doing anything on that machine after a purchase.

totally agree with you. almost 3 years waiting, gpu performance is not doubled (10% @1080p, 20% @1440p). gimmicks all around (RTX, DLSS). manufacturing process not ideal (14nm+++++++++ intel, 12nm wtf why not 7nm? nvidia). price increased substantially (intel, nvidia) what kind of world are we living in now??
-
Kuro Kensei Notebook Consultant
Yep, you should also read the fine print during your Win 10 install before hitting the "accept" button. Yet you probably dismiss it as most people and let the system [or should I say matrix?] own you.
And no it won't void my AW warranty. I can repaste, repad and swap/upgrade every component in it, as long as I keep the originals in case I need to send it back. If Dell uses the above fineprint to void warranties in real life - they will lose this AW business pretty quickly. Because skill and trust goes both ways. They hire Tier I techies to cut corners and you know what happens next. Replacement after replacement you end up wasting and refurbishing a lot of good new hardware, and in the end the customer sends the system back for a refund and a hefty discount on the next purchase for the inconvenience. So if you know what you are doing, and make your case with Dell support, they will be more than happy to let you do the replacements yourself and simply send you the hardware components. The warranty remains intact and everybody wins. Needless to say that many of the veterans here have long term healthy relationships with the Dellienware support. I don't call the main line anymore, I text my AW US Tier 3 buddy and we figure things out on the fly, hassle free. Fun fact, I don't even live in the US

@1:04:00
CPU 2,8GHZ - Idle ~ 56 °C ?
GPU 300 Mhz - (30%) Idle ~ 57 °C ?
It seems a bit high i think, or do they have a room temperature of 30°C ?
- My "old" AW18 has idle Temps of 40° CPU and GPU...
I also wanted to ask you, if its possible to put 2666Mhz Ramsticks into it without problem? Thanks in AdvanceLast edited: Jan 31, 2019Vasudev and Fire Tiger like this. -
with 0 rpm fans? The Aw17r5 can turn off the fans during idle. Would not be surprised if the A51m can do the same... 0 RPM fans in a hot studio.

i am talking not about idle Fans in my AW18(~1800rpm all fans). You think that there are no fans running in this video?
-
yes that could be the case. The Aw17R5 turn off his fans during idleraz8020 likes this.

And a minor Cpu spike up to default all core boost frequency shoot the temp up to 73°C. At least not above 90°C

Yes, exactly my feelings too. Unless we see a 144Hz or UHD screen panel, and some serious benchmarks and heat performance it appears the only changes are cosmetic for a hefty premium.
Actually for UHD owners it is a straight downgrade. And is it right that the GPU is limited to 150W or did I misunderstand it? Or maybe the RTX 2080 at 150W is much better than the GTX 1080 at 180W ? -
Area-51m 2080 is capable of 180W. Azor confirmed that. 17" UHD 144Hz panel is a bit far fetched, the panel dont exist. the more practical and also available panel is 1440p high refresh (120 or 144Hz). it wont overstress 2080 yet still provide good fps experience. besides, UHD @ 17" is not ideal too. u simply cant read anything without scaling it 150% or moreIXVIXXII likes this.

You might call dell and beg a little. I got a pretty good discount and then took $1200 and bought the i9 and ram and nvme drives and such. I have no special status with dell/alienware and I just really pushed the Rep to give me a really good price.
-
@euphoric28
This should not throttle and also the price is EXCELLENT. It is like 1842 EUR LOL
I paid this +100 EUR for Alienware 13 r3 a year ago (half the performance).
-
What do they mean by "with automatic upgrade to latest-gen graphics technology when shipped" ?
-
Fire Tiger Notebook Deity
When you pre-ordered they only had the 1060/1070/1080 available on the site. But they had the above quote to advise it would automatically be upgraded to 2060/2070/2080 upon release. -
Officially ordered an Area-51M, should arive within 2 to 3 weeks.
Looking forward to it.
My order:
- i7-9700K
- Win 10 Pro
- RTX 2080
- Lunar Light
- FHD 144hz + Tobii + G-Sync
- 32GB Ram
- 256 GB PCIe M2.SSD + (Planning to swap this with the 1TB 970 Pro, which is a LOT better and A LOT cheaper).
And that's about it. -
Upon what release? Are they waiting for the 2080 to be released? The RTX 2080 has been for sale quite a while now. Or do they mean when *they* release it?
And, "automatically" does not mean "free". Are you going to be charged extra? Will they have to come out to your premises to swap the graphics cards?
