You don't have to worry about anything. I checked on the UK site, which says RTX 2080, and checked on Beglium site (which is where I ordered), and they have the exact product number for both these choices:
RTX 2080 on UK site
GTX 1080 But will be automatically updated pefore shipping to the latest Graphics Adapter on Belgium Site.
Both have same product code, which is what counts when the order is received in the manufacturing factory in china. So both are the exact same GPU. So indeed it's safe to assume that the Alienware Are 51m will NOT ship with GTX 10 series gpu's.
They most likely didn't call them RTX 2080, because of the embargo Nvidia had on the RTX laptop GPU's until 29th of January,
Clearly the embargo is over, but the texts are not updated properly on all Alienware websites depending on the countries.

The laptop 2060 etc. were only released on the 29th of January. So when you ordered they were giving you a free upgrade from the 1060 to the 2060 in theory. -

Has anyone found out any more about the cooling solution and what versions of CPU/GPU will receive the best? I'd hope only the 8700 paired with 2060 would get the lower end cooling?
-
Where did you get the info that the area 51m has different cooling solutions? I missed such info
-
-
Thanks for the info. Judging from the fact that I ordered RTX 2080 and the 9700K, which came with the 2ndary 330 watt psu instead of the 240 one. I hope and think I should be safe then.
Thanks again, had missed that.raz8020, Fire Tiger, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
When I priced out the 9700k with a 2080 on Dell's website it said it would ship with 180 and 240 watt power supplies.

They’re talking about factory default overclocking feature on that, you can tweak cpu gpu through that without going to bios or using other 3rd party software, RAM can be also overclocked but at that time the feature is not finished. They didn’t talk about temperature, at least on the time you pointed, didn’t see the full video yet.raz8020, Vistar Shook and 1Schumsta1 like this.

They do Alienware review every Wednesday for around an hour, it’s the 11th time btw. Really Great, remember I was there on the shop in Akihabara wanna to get Dell Inspiron I believe but ended up with Qosmio x303.
I remember he mentioned battery around 2 hours unlike other that may be up to 8 hours? And he explained also the purpose and plan of Area 51m from now, that what I want to hear actually but yeah I’m only ordinary employee here, can’t watch an hour video on working time

I hope you're right. And maybe a repaste is different from what we have Frank Azor stating, "..consider buying the cpu from us as well because we use a very specific thermal paste that you would have to use in order to preserve your warranty if you upgraded the cpu." - http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...enware-15-and-17.826796/page-42#post-10846008
AFAIK, this is the first time a TIM is explicitly mentioned as something that may void a warranty. If you plan on scraping and saving the old TIM on repaste, I hope that you can get enough to re-apply if needed. Perhaps your Tier 3 buddy can enlighten us on how Dell will check if the paste is 'Dell approved'. There have been wild speculations on how they will identify the paste. For example, a special coloring (AW Green??). Or perhaps things are as you say, and they won't really check or enforce it.
But if you do end up sending it back, and are feeling particularly adventuresome (or guinea piggish), do a quick repaste before it goes back. It would benefit this community if you report back the results of they accepted it ("All's well") or voided the warranty ("You've got to be kidding me!!")
No offense, but a software EULA is a poor comparison to a warranty of a physical product. They're nothing alike. Also, in case your question was to me directly, No I don't have to hit the "Accept" button on a Windows 10 install. There's no need, as my mind has already been freed from The Matrix. My signature below regarding the OS probably explains better.

If I end up pulling the trigger on one of these it will be from HIDevolution where they will warranty the laptop and all the TIM work. Depending on independent reviews of the Area 51-M (not one that sounds like a paid ad like laptopmag's) I plan on buying the delidded 9700k from HID

I usually don't care about waiting for reviews but this is eating me every day. I wonder if Dell had issues with shipping out units to reviewers. The embargo is already lifted but it's been pretty silent.

if any of you speak german: they sum it up pretty good
they basically say it depends on the cpu and the resolution you play on, but the gpus can come very close to their stock desktop versions as long as they don't get bottlenecked. (tested on a msi ge75 raider 8sf)
so combined with the desktop cpus in the aw they should actually perform decently well... i hope that will be the case -
I ordered mine from the belgium site. And there on my order details it is listed with 180 + 330

On the official Dell page it states 4.5 hours on standby and 3 hours on video play back.
Honestly that's more than I thought but these numbers are always unrealistic as this normally with the brightness all the way down and keyboard back lights off.
So 2 hours for general purpose use is probably accurate. I'll know in a couple weeks.

According to my source, there's no real process in place [yet] for them to verify the TIM. This statement sounds like an attempt to discourage people from repasting with Liquid metal products. Probably a lot of mess was made and a lot of hardware was ruined in the last couple of years. So, if you ever use liquid metal, make sure to clean and replace with a normal paste before sending it back if you ever have to. That should be enough to keep the warranty intact.
As for your OS, yes Linux Mint is great, now how about Qubes with Subgraph next? Personally, I'm still lacking the knowledge to drive those efficiently, so using various debian and arch flavors to learn. But I still have Mint on one of my laptops, very solid OS.jclausius likes this. -

He’s, the Japanese marketing team already know Area 15m since winter 2017, and at the end of the show he told that users shouldn’t hoping too much battery life it would be around 2 hours normal usage unlike m15, because the power that is taken.
There will be something like nvidia experience, all games would be on games library and you can optimize the game and costumize the Keyboard lightning for that as well.Terreos likes this. -
That's why I'll just bring a generator when I take this thing on the road just to post on the forums.

Didn’t you already buy Terreos carrying back pack from Japan for that did you? I think it’ll fit one or two generators as well
He said it looks big but actually it is lighter than previous Alienware big laptop, forgot which model, it’s due new cassis technology and fans when I’m not wrong that use special materials. He recommended to Japan market to use it as desktop replacement at home and moving a only for setting change inside home...maybe because Japanese isn’t huge and powerful like poeple in US or EU.Last edited: Jan 31, 2019 -
Yes I have one of the area 51m backpacks on order. That should be on my doorstep feburary 4th. Should be plenty to carry what I need.
-
i own one for about 6 years now and carry it around at least twice per weak, often daily. it's really not that bad^^ i kind of understand why some people go thin and light, but honestly, having the option to have a lot of power is way more important to me, than having a smaller laptop. especially because this way i can just take it to a friends place and have a great gaming experience with them, instead of sitting alone in my room.
But i'm a tall and big guy so your miles may vary
Currently i'm using the asus rog nomad backpack and i really like it. it fits basically all the tech stuff i have including my nintendo switch (without the dock but if i wanted to fit it, i'm pretty sure it would) -
I take my M18xR2 to work, school, my house, my apartment at school, friends house, gf house. Probably travel with it at least 3 times a week.
It can get a bit heavy with the power brick and other stuff in the bag but just the laptop + extra battery is fine.

I brought an M17xR1 with me to Afghanistan as an INFANTRYMAN. I had to buy the biggest authorized day pack to fit it! I only had to carry it when moving to new positions I'd be staying at for a long period of time, so I only had to carry it every so often, but it came with!
Nowadays, I'm sitting at a desk with a lot of down time. Big laptops come with me. I have a small laptop that I use for class and business though, so it isn't like I use it everywhere. The 51m would be absolutely hilarious to break out in a class room or business where you are exposed to lots of coworkers or customers.VoodooChild and mobile96 like this. -

If anyone wants to start getting an idea of performance for the 51m , I just benchmarked my P775 with a 9900K and 2080. 2080 was stock clocks and 9900K is at 4.8ghz. GPU was very cool and was boosting to the 1900’s.

I remember back when I had my old 17x R2. I put it in my old backpack that I had since middle school. It juuuuust fit inside. And I'd take that with me when I went to my friends house. I was early twenties at the time and hitting the gym regularly so it was like nothing the younger version of me. One day I was putting my backpack on and all I heard was "POP". I quickly take my back pack off and one of the straps had popped at the seams and was only half connected. From that day forward I always just carried it under my arm. But I'm hoping to not relive those days with a proper laptop backpack.

Thanks for the screenshot. but at default, the 2080 is seriously underwhelming. i'm not a hardcore overclocker but i can score close to 24000 in firestrike graphics score with a GTX1080 (23940 to be exact) using alienware 17 R4
what's the TDP of your 2080? are you able to increase the TDP to 180W to match what area-51m is capable of?
also are you able to overclock your 2080 and what's the max OC and score? Prema got his to around 26000 if im not mistaken, which is still way behind desktop 1080ti -

They are referring to "mGPU" which is a DX12 feature. mGPU allows you to mix/match models (2080, 2070), brands (AMD, NVIDIA) but requires developers to implement it.
So for gaming, it'll be useless unless developers start supporting mGPU more.hmscott likes this. -
He says that the mobile rtx 2080 is on par with the desktop version. And he blame only the mobile 6 cores as the limiting factor. If he recommend something subliminally, then he does recommend not to buy an rtx with overheating 8950/8750.
