Great stuff! Good job. Despite what a few may say about not delidding the 9900K, it is absolutely a must to gain all temp drops one can... the ONLY situation where one would not bother delidding and where the stock indium solder would benefit is in XOC situations, but other than that, the stock solder job is hideous proven by the extreme core temp differentials.

All of my 9900K's are or will be delidded except a few to save for XOC in the future.

Looking forward to your updates. :)

M15 did not have an issue with failing GPU power circuitry (or whatver was the reason few 51m owners already had to repair their units for), so there's less reason for M15 owners to discuss their units ;-)

So to fix the black screen issue I've been having, I am attempting to rollback my vbios from the 200w update back to the 190w vbios version. Someone here was kind enough to post a link to their current 190w bios, so I downloaded it. I've been trying to flash it using nvflash, but it keeps telling me

    Adapter: Graphics Device (10DE,1ED0,1028,08C4) H:--:NRM S:00,B:01,D:00,F:00

    EEPROM ID (EF,6014) : WBond W25Q80EW 1.65-1.95V 8192Kx1S, page
WARNING: Firmware image PCI Subsystem ID (10DE.0000)
does not match adapter PCI Subsystem ID (1028.08C4).
    NOTE: Exception caught.
    Nothing changed!

    ERROR: PCI subsystem ID mismatch

Does anyone here know anything about this kind of stuff, or what I'm doing wrong? All I can find online is that people typically override the mismatch when it occurs... but I am kind of paranoid of doing that.

Edit* Obviously the only way I can do this is to disable the nvidia drivers and use the onboard intel one, otherwise the screen would cut off. Would it be trying to match against the intel gpu as a result?

There is a guide somewhere for this but you might be flashing the wrong adapter, should be adapter 0 and 1, one of them is the 2080. Maybe someone can link the flash guide for nvflash here

Man you guys are helpful here. I'd be at a loss if it weren't for the ideas, etc, I've gotten from this forum. I've found some guides, but most outdated by almost a decade. I wonder how I can figure out which gpu is 0 and which is 1?

ist impressive what this Notebook is able to do with silent fans… we still talk about desktop components in a notebook...

Well, at this point, I'd say the risk is worth it heh. I think I will try to re-install fresh windows 10 one more time, then override and flash. Talked to Dell Customer support to see if I could just buy a GPU, but didn't seem to be an option. From over here, it would be almost a 3 month turn around time if I have to send this thing back stateside.

The m15 has much more competition from Razer, Asus, HP and such. All about the same thin and somewhat light systems with their own little quirks.

The Area 51m only competes with the CLEVO DTRs which have had the same dull design going on 3 years now, and MSI Titian that have the horrible large dragon logo (subjective) and is considerably larger.

People seem much more interested in it then past DTR Clevo and MSI systems that get churned out every year. Almost 500,000 in 4 months is insane for the amount of traffic this site sees in general.

I tried using an external monitor on mine but didnt seem to matter, i still had no post and error continued so I suspect it was complete GPU failure for mine. I ran through some diagnostic tests with Dell support and they were happy to send out a technician to replace the lcd panel, GPU and Mainboard which I said i didnt want to do. Thats like buying a new car from the dealership and driving it home to have the engine blow up and they tell me they'll send a mechanic around to replace the engine...no thanks give me a new one please or a full refund.

That's what I'm finding too, now I just keep my fans on balanced and I live with default rhb... What horrible software though, seriously it's so bad, it's made me reinstall win 3 times .... And reflash my bios cause I think it modifies invisible settings in there too... I thought I would try it again after they updated, what a mistake, now I'm reinstalling windows again. Fakkk

Thinking about purchasing one of these. Primary gaming will be World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth and beyond. My budget is decent but I don't want to spend needlessly as well. I plan on the 9700K since the 8700K is notorious for running hot but the question is will the 2060 do the trick or spend extra for the 2070 to be safe?

I find it better control with undervolting and overclocking GPU and CPU with throttle stop and afterburner. Plus it causes sleep issues with power management and I felt like I had bluescreens every now and then with it installed.
    What do you use?

The game you are looking to run can run on much lower end hardware. This laptop will cost over 2k even at the 2060 level i believe. That being said it's a really good machine with plenty of room to grow. It just is not easily portable or cost effective. For just WoW i would look at lower cost systems. A 1060 equipped machine would be able to run it no problem. You can pick up a used razer for 800 or so and be golden.

If you are set on this laptop having below a 2080 seems a waste. Mine runs great and stays cool. Good luck!

There is if you go to the advanced view. It's quite possible AWCC doesn't support UV/OC with the i7-8750H and only works with the i9.

You can XTU or TS fine though and I think they work better.

8750H is a locked CPU. That is why you can't do anything with it in AWCC.

As said above, you are going to have to use XTU or TS. If you have the 8750HK then you should be able to uv, OC.

    I use
    AWCC for fan/RGB
    Xtu and Afterburner

And there is absolutely no problem using the 3 together
Also there is a power management tab in AWCC and you can control whatever you want there thats causing issue

Honestly in the first year. I'm probably just going to use AWCC to undervolt the cpu a bit to keep temps nice and cool. I am quite a noob when it comes to PCs. Maybe down the line I will mess with Afterburner and other programs for further tweeks. but out of the box performance is more than adequate for the included 144hz 1080p screen. But I will use Afterburner to check temps and fps, also might switch to OC2 and performance fans for more demanding games this year. Next year I'll tweak a bit (9700k/2080)

You can use Command Center just fine without Overclock Controls. They install separate.

The trick is tu uninstall Overclock Controls. Install your replacement app, then reinstall OC and disable it. This is so you can still use fan profiles if you wish

On a random side note. You had mentioned somewhere that creative ready drivers are not good for gaming or something along those lines.

There's been this same debate with Quadro drivers forever and the general result is...they perform almost identical (Quadro Performance Drivers vs Game Ready vs Creator Ready)

I'm going to be using creator ready for now. However when new games come out I'm 99% certain Game Ready Drivers will come out awhile faster than Creator Ready.

    Hope this helps others too.

This is exactly what I do.

The problem with the AWCC power management tab is it lists my 3 profiles, Balanced, power saver, and high performance but how do you actually make that plan active? there is no radio button to select.

How are you guys getting Dell to tell you anything other than "Part shortage" I hear processors, motherboards all in this forum about delays. These people are incredibly incompetent. I cannot fathom how they can't tell you what is the part shortage or issue.

I ordered an Area 51m 9700k/RTX2080 last week. When browsing through this thread I got cold feet and decided to call dell (Netherlands) to cancel my order. My order was supposed to be delivered before 29/04/19.
The guy on the other end asked me why I was cancelling, I told him about this thread and the burning issue concerning me. He told me that they are aware about this, he called it capacitor issue with GPU (I never mentioned GPU, he told this). He told me it was due to a manufacturer issue (not dell) which is fixed now but that this is still causing delays while demand is quite high.

As I ordered with 3 years of warranty, I am leaving the order in. Fingers crossed that all will be allright with this fix!

In order for AWCC to work with XTU or Throttlestop.

You need to set whatever fan profile you want, disable all OC'ing feature and than reboot your PC.
Once your PC is rebooted your fan profile will be loaded automatically, make sure not to open AWCC and you can proceed using XTU or TS.

    Home screen to activate it.

Yeah, I had a rep tell me some weeks ago not what the issues were, just that the issues were fixed...yet more cases of conflagration kept popping up.
Sales reps get paid to make sales, and I can only surmise the conditions of employment that they might be subject to...

That being said, I don't think there is any doubt that some GPUs have been at fault, as was reported to you. @QUICKSORT was told it was a motherboard issue, and I don't doubt that some faulty MBs have been the culprits as well. There may also be other defects that have been responsible for units burning up.

No matter how you slice it, "you pays yer money, and you takes yer chances."

    Good luck!

Dell support is literally the worst and those of you who have extended warranty should really be thinking twice. In their terms it states at any time they can forgo the in home repair and force you to send the machine via post to their depot. This can take weeks. They dont care if you run a business and need a machine, and from my experience would rather refund the machine than be proactive.

Latest new i got from Umar is the following (Friday) :

    1. There is no recall/revision on any Hardware at all.

    2. They have all the burned unit (7-8 units) in hands at Alienware HQ and are preparing a Bios update to fix potential issue. (Possibly a power delivery issue)

    3. The failures rate is extremly low right now, they have shipped thousands of units and they are happy with the failure rate.

    4. The current delays are due to high demand (Screen/CPU)

I and most user are experiencing no issue at all with their units.
Defective units exist among all product and is no different for Dell.

you don't own the product so all you do is speculate.

Lets say Dell pushed out +7000 units. With 7 failed as they claim this will be 0.1%. You think the failures rate is that low? If so... I would call it exceptional. Rather say amazing good numbers. Why would they then see the need for a bios update to fix sub 0.1% ? They aim for 0.0%? Number like this is to good to be true.

I had a good conversation with Umar and i have no reason not to believe him, he was really honnest with me and i gotta give him credit for that.
I think their failure rate is low and that they care about this new Area-51M and they definitely wanna make it right. They know they failed on many level with their past product and they wanna change that.

How many company reply to their customer like Umar and Frank has done during the past month? Not so many ... so kudos to them.
