So, still trying to solve my blackscreen problem. Had a quick question:
I have noticed that, even though I have reinstalled windows 10 fresh (and reformatted/deleted all partions), and have reset the cmos, my keyboard stays the same color I originally set it when I first got the laptop. So where is that stored? Because if that isnt getting reset, perhaps my problem isnt either....

Has to be stored in the bios somewhere, but hidden from the user. Being that the touchpad RGB led can be turned on and off in the bios, there has to be a connection. Not sure if doing a complete set to default and save in the bios would help

This is the just like the problem I had with them. Ordered from them and my order got cancelled. I had to get on the phone and web chat with about 8 of their agents and it was reordered about 8 times total before it was finally fixed. I was so mad as I started my order at 2am and it wasn’t fixed and done right until about 11am. I hate the hold music so much now, and was so frustrated with the customer service as there was never a stated reason why my orders kept getting cancelled right after they were placed. My bank account was looking insane going up and down by thousands of dollars every 30 mins or so. After the whole ordeal I was afraid to even check the order status again after it stayed At confirmed for over 30 mins for fear it would revert back to cancelled or something. Lucky for me I now get to sit around and wait till the 16th for mine to get here? Maybe? Oh and lastly one of the agents I spoke to did say that my order wasn’t going through because there was a problem with the computer I was ordering he said he wasn’t allowed to tell me what the problem was tho. But my response was I just wanted to go ahead and order it anyways and they can just ship it out when the problem is fixed hopefully. My original order date at the start of my ordering adventure was April 30th and later in the middle one of the agents moved my shipping date up to the 16th. So I’m excited to get this laptop but not off to a great start so far.

If it is like the AW17R5 then it is likely stored in external/inaccessible NVRAM, and only accessible through the AWCC. Which means you can install the dreaded AWCC, setup the colours you like, and then zap the entire disk system, partitions and all, re-install Windows from scratch, and the lights remain the same for ever.

The m15/m17 elite backpack is smaller and has less usable space. You can use it but it will be a tight fit. I would recommend just waiting to get the 51m elite backpack.

If you replace the boot ssd with a nvme ssd do I need to order a heat sink shield for that part? When mines arrive I’d like to replace that first..

Also is it worth it to replace the ram with 2666 ram or would that just be wasteful?

Don't worry mate, people obviously just like to whinge about anything and If this is one of the major worries of their life then they must be doing pretty well overall, no sympathy from me.

I saw your video and noticed you used one of my comments in it and couldn't care less. It is better that more people are aware of potential issues with the laptop as it is all relevant information to new consumers. Also it can only help to try to resolve the issues by Alienware by bringing attention to the problems. Thanks and keep up the good work.

It comes with 2666 ram. Just runs at 2400 because they haven't implemented the change to run it at 2666 yet.

    Hey Everyone,

I am new here but I have been lurking this thread for quite some time. I bought an alienware m17x r4 back in the summer of 2012.. I am still using this same computer today and it kicks ass. When I had initially bought it, it ran very smooth but a year in I noticed my fans were always blasting so I put new thermal paste acouple times and the machine still runs great. 680M graphics card! haha.

I know it's time for me to buy a new laptop and the 51m is what I have my eyes on.. I am currently waiting for a better screen resolution- I primarily do video editing and I work with 4k footage alot. 1440p will just be skimming the line of acceptable but that's okay because I will most likely get a new 4k monitor. Does anyone have any idea when the higher res screens will be in?

I have also read about the 6 dead laptops which is concerning howeve,r I have also read that Alienware has already been modifying and fixing these discovered problems ( is this true? ) and I am sure there will be a new generation or alteration when the new screens come out making this laptop even more safe and better.. I want my 51m to last 7 years like my current m17xr4 has and there is no reason why it shouldn't with proper maintenance like applying new thermal paste.

As of now what should I worry about? have most of the problems been neutralized?
I have only ordered from dell for security and I was curious about the benefits of using HID and other companies vs dell.

I plan on buying the best I can get and will not be upgrading cpu or gpu but I will be using new thermal paste a year or two in.

Thank you for all of your knowledge and help!

    Hello there,

The only other screen option (maybe as we won't know until it actually happens) is a 4K screen. If you work using an external monitor then you'll be fine, but the 1080p screen isn't too awful...it's actually on the higher end of the cuts of the steak.

I would maybe wait it out for a bit to see what revisions they might bring to the current A51M. Despite the few cases online my unit along with many others here have been fine.

Buying from HIDevolution ensures better quality control and more importantly, their cooling mods like Thermal Grizzly conductonaut + Fujipoly Extreme Pads + others to mitigate any overheating issues. They also offer silicon lottery binned + delidded CPUs which IMO is worth it rather than playing the Russian roulette to get a not os great CPU

I’m pretty much the same as you. I’m using a laptop with a 770m gpu lol. But it’s been going strong for years. I’m just going to get and external monitor for now and hope that maybe one day they make it where you can easily upgrade the monitor on these things (whishful thinking I know, but who knows). I want something I can game on and but also do some serious art, editing and other work with. Might as well take the plunge because the way I see it a massive company such as apple will make revisions to products and the product can be have just as many flaws *cough bendgate cough* so I’d say just go for it as you might be waiting forever for things to be perfect.

I am using Afterburner /didn't figure it out how to push power limit ...

Also does anybody know is hooking up 2x330W will change the power draw behaviour in a positive way ?

(I am running max fans .. GPU is @ 77 / CPU - 83 - I would say this is dead cold :) in laptop's world without any "tricks" just fan profile 100 %)

Thank you for your responses. I am going to wait until the better screens come out. Waiting the first few months after a new product is out is always a good idea anyway so I am fine with waiting.

So i ordered this beast from HIDevolution with Donald who is great ! I got the SL binned.

Dell are completely useless. I called to cancel my order then I get an email saying my order was confirmed then I got another email saying I needed to verify the order.

    Headless chickens .

If you going buy this order from HIDevolution

Btw my aorus x9 dt 2018 is no slouch . Gpu oc and cpu at 4.7 ghz I get 81fps on all ultra high settings in division 2. I run krynoaut on gpu and cpu and it’s silent it’s on eBay now

The ASUS 2080 max q 17inch was disappointing. Only 71 FPS on ultra high div2

Good job! Now I know you can do more... :)

In theory yes...in reality...maybe?... but more kinda sorta yes... there are power limitations, but the way I see it is that having more power available (whether it is used or not) creates a better environment overall, where it puts less stress on the psu etc... Also factor in the reality of the power efficiency, which may or may not kinda sorta play a role?

With desktop PSU's the sweet spot is around 50-60% utilization so if you're running a 9900K with a 2080... that'll put you right around ~50%+ ... which is around the mid point of two 330 bricks.

I don't know lol.. but for me having more juice is better than having too little ...and in my own mind I would always opt for more power in cases where it's an option...

    Yup. :)

I have a couple of power bricks at home: 2x 330w, 1x240w, 1x180w. When the A51m sits on my desk i use 330w+240 while 330w+180w is stored in the bag. The performance is exactly the same with both :)

Anyone else have an issue download the Intel Chipset Driver? Support Assist keeps saying it needs to be installed but everytime i do it, it seems to not work and/or go away. I've also tried downloading it directly from Intels website, and from the driver page Ultra posted.. Not sure if mine is already up to date, or if its outdated.. This is the version i've been trying to download 10.1.17765.8094.

Nice. It's convenient to have multiple PSU's, especially if you move around a lot with the laptop. 570W vs 660W has a ceiling that is way more than enough than the system can pull so yea... to each his own, but I still like having more power if it's possible.

No I believe they all have the same heatsink. The 2060/8700 might* have a different one, but I think they confirmed that it doesnt, they just blocked the side vents.

Not 100% sure if the 2060 does in fact have a different heatsink, I'm sure someone else can chime in though. But 2070/2080 have the same heatsink forsure, no matter what CPU you get.

Actually not 100% sure how to manage the adapters. I have a 330W and a 240W at home already. I got the 330W when I was overclocking the old M17x R3 with 2960XM and 780m and wanted more headroom.

So my current plan is to have 330W + 180W at work, 330W + 240W sitting at home.

But what if have an emergency and need to use the laptop on the road/ at a random spot? Maybe I should keep the 240W in the bag all the time, hmmmm...

Any system with the 2060 no matter what cpu it has will have a different heatsink. It will not have the side heatpipes. I sent mine back with the 2060 and 9700k because of this.

I have a question about the division 2 benchmark. I saw others in this thread reporting low CPU usage during the bench but I couldn’t find a reason/fix.
Im having the same thing with my setup. I have 8700/2070 with 16gb ram. My score is 8484 with avg fps 95 and GPU usage 96% but CPU usage of 51% on balanced mode. This is on the internal monitor.
Anyone know what could be wrong? Or is this normal? I also read ppl saying division 2 uses alot of CPU power so doesn’t seem normal.
Temps are great btw, never above 72 degrees Celsius.

That’s total BS, would make anyone with a 2060 have to pay for a new heatsink just to upgrade. And the side vents aren’t there at all or just blocked by something ? I’m sure many normal users out there buy this machine with a 2060 since it’s great for the 1080P panel and the majority of these horrible battle royal games. They won’t be happy to discover this.
