Try an external monitor and see if that brings it back to life. Some people have reported that they connected to another monitor and it brought the display back and then they reinstalled nvidia drivers again as a clean install and shut the system down before booting on the previous screen. Try that. You've got nothing to lose at this point.

Yeah I'll try connecting it to my TV via HDMI tomorrow when it turns off, sick of fiddling with it for now.
I hope if it is a hardware issue I can pull some parts from my old machine that I haven't sent back yet and swap them out.
I did a regular clean driver reinstall through Geforce Experience and it didnt help, I'll try DDU tomorrow as well.S.K likes this. -

Just used sleep on my laptop for the first time. Worked fine. Just took a few seconds for the screen to turn on.
Fast boot enabled, everything normal.

same here. using sleep all day...

Dell and other OEMs give these CPUs wayyyyyyyy too much voltage. You need to bring it down. -
I'm going to try a clean install of windows and see if that stops my screen from going black during benchmarks.
Hopefully my keyboard and USB ports will stop malfunctioning as well.
Otherwise this goes back to Dell :/ -

Intel Chipset and Intel Dynamic and other Intel drivers are being updated every day... 3 days in a row now on the 51m driver page. Anybody see good reason to keep doing all those drivers? I did a clean install of Windows and use default Windows update drivers.

Just received mine !
everything seems great so far, but how do I apply the OC2 profile and Performance fans mode in AWCC. They seem to reset to default everytime. Am I doing anything wrong ?
Edit: I'm stupid everything works now
What undervolting works with OC2 -100 seems to BSOD in AWCC ?
Also Do I just sign in to Tobii for The Division 2 and wait for it to "magically" detect my tracker ?Last edited: Apr 11, 2019 -
Man, I don't know if I'll be frustrated about the delay or be happy that they are fixing any problems prior to shipment.
I ordered thru XoticPC 9700k GTX 2080, placed it last Mar 15 with an ETA: End of March. Apr 3, they sent a message saying the shipment was pushed back and that they'll get back to me in 10-14 business days. Then Apr. 10, I received the same message that it was pushed back and that they'll get back to me in 10-14 business days.
!!!!!! Its so hard to wait. The bad thing is that's still not the day they'll receive the Area51m, just the info on when they'll be receiving it.

I'm on the same boat as you. Got the best deal to ship to Dubai from xotic, $3600 including $300 shipping for 9700K, 2080, 144Hz, 16 Gigs, 500 970 PLUS, 1TB 860pro and ordered the machine on 9th April. ETA says end of April but highly doubt that considering your March order is still not ready yet.
I don't mind getting it in May provided my system doesn't blow up or turn out to be a lemon. Ordered some LM and fulipoly too so hoping they'll throughly test out the system before they ship it across the pond. In any case, the "unknown" delivery date makes it more difficult wait.
Here to hoping Dell will get it right but their silence is a little bit too eerie at the moment.

Haha! Well I am on the other boat as I am in QA (if you know what I mean)! Anyway, yeah, hopefully the item show up sooner rather than later, I only opted for the kryonaut as I only play Rocket League and CS Go and just want a badass "portable PC", I don't want to have to repaste LM after some time or If I'm reselling it when the next big thing comes. I hope it doesn't blow up tho!

Dead GPU on arrival?
Alienware AREA 51-M Day 1 POWER FAILURE and C Key FELL OFF #DOA
Order was on hold due to parts availability... after 32 days I received my laptop... I open it, I type on keyboard for the FIRST TIME AND C key snaps, falls down in the rest of the keys; I did it out, plug it back in, falls off again ... rolls eyes because.... I have BIGGER ISSUES!!
I plug both power bricks into the wall and computer. I turn it on. Let’s me set it up, then powers down by itself but lights stay on. Hold the power button down and shut it down and try again, I turn it on, turns right back off with nothing. Won’t even power into windows. I take the power cords out and try it off battery, in windows one minute and the screen shuts off. I’m not POSITIVE if it’s the GPU but I THINK the computer stays on but I can’t see anything on the screen. I’ve plugged it into my TV for ****s, tv does the same thing the monitor does. Lights stay on, screen shuts down, won’t stay on longer than 4 minutes.
First time I’ve bought from them, last time as well. $3k for 32 days to wait for a broken computer for them to ONLY offer an apology and a replacement.SlickDragon, jclausius, raz8020 and 5 others like this. -
@SacraficeMyGoat I was going to suggest plugging in an external monitor as well. The display ports plug directly into the gpu. I would start out with the plugged in monitor and see if it still goes black after some set time. If it still cuts off, it would lean towards (but not verify) a gpu issue (unfortunately). With the monitor plugged in, it should force your 51m to not use the integrated intel graphics. So it doesn't turn off after being on for a long time, look into settings it uses for determining which graphics to use. I'm assuming you've reset all OC settings to stock while you troubleshoot this issue.
I was going to ask what settings you used to get a 22k graphics score on firestrike, I only got a 21k with my 2070. -
Glad I’m not the only one to have a key just jump off like it didn’t wanna be there. I was like wtf key get back there and do your job and it was like nah I’m good. Lmao., but yeah you’ve god bigger problems and that sucks.
-
You are missing the point completely. It is not about how quickly you can start it up, but how quickly you can shut it down. You could have a dozen applications all asking "do you want to save this?" and the LAST thing you want is to have to make decisions when the only thing you really want is just shut the damn thing off and go to bed. Or catch your flight. That is where Sleep comes in, it is instant shut off, no questions asked.
-
Sleep is not an instant shut off. Sleep is a low power state, it still consumes battery. Hibernate is a shut off.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.

Is it possible to boot Linux on it? Does the OS recognize all HW? I think @ssj92 was doing some tests but I don't remember if he was able to make it boot completely without issues (don't remember which distribution either). I'm really interested on this as I would like to install a Linux distribution to have dual boot and just leave Windows for gaming and other things that require the 2080 full power.
Apart from this, I have read that the glossy plastic frame from the screen and speakers is very prone to scratches specially if you use a micro fiber cloth. What would you guys recommend for cleaning this glossy plastic in a safe way?
Thanks
By the way, after a long wait I finally received it today! 9900K, RTX 2080, 32 GB RAM, 1TB NVMe (2x512), 144Hz g-sync tobii.Last edited: Apr 11, 2019 -
I just did, and they said that its due to parts shortage and that they don't know when the shortages will last.
-
That's from xotic right? I believe a lot of people who've been waiting on their orders from dell finally received theirs and others who have ordered within in the past week or 2 are getting shipping notices. So hopefully that means you won't have to wait too much longer.Last edited: Apr 11, 2019

Does Dell charge you first before they ship the unit?
I bought the 17R5 last December and had my order delayed a couple of times. It was frustrating but they never billed me anything till they shipped out the unit so it wasn't THAT bad. I still had the option to cancel my order. Based on this story, it seems like Dell charged him $3k right upfront. Can someone confirm if Dell does this? -

I think his wording was more out of frustration. I believe it is illegal to charge before a product is shipped. I didn't get charged until my unit had shipped and more than one person has reported that they didn't get charged until the day after it was delivered.iron_megalith likes this.
-
I knew this would be the case but I don't really see how bringing up $3k price point is of any use. He still has an option for refund if he's so displeased. But I digress. I'm not undermining the technical failure his unit had.

Mine still has no shipping notice... bought from Dell Direct
Purchased 3/23/2019
Arrives by: 4/29/2019 -
Ordered a 9700/2080 on March 14. Expected ship date of March 27, Estimated arrival date of April 1. All past still no ETA on when my unit will arrive. Customer support has been giving me the run around for the past 2 weeks telling me to wait 24-48 for an update. 24-48 hours pass and no update. My delivery day still shows April 1 (10 days ago) and the status of the order is "Your custom-built item is complete." has been for 3 weeks now. Called customer support again and this time the person on the other end suggests I cancel my order. Yea like that's going to happen after I already waited a month and paid for and received an Alienware A51m laptop backpack, Alienware AW3418DW monitor, a 2 TB hard drive and 2 TB m.2 ssd weeks ago while waiting for this computer.
-
That stinks, what specs did you order?
-
I have had such a mixed bag when it comes to customer support from dell. It seems like you need weed through all the script readers to find that one agent who actually cares about what kind of service they provide. I used to really despise having to work with them. A company I worked for stopped using them. I had my own script I'd read to get through all the nonsense and get the help I needed. I really hope it doesn't get that bad again.
-
That is horrible, I ordered my A-51m last week Thursday 4/4 (9900k, 2080, 144hz non gsync) and its being delivered tomorrow (Fedex tracking in hand).Fire Tiger and mason2smart like this.

Has anyone had ACC freeze up when switching fan profiles? Ugh. Had a blue screen when opening Nvidia GFE and now I can't seem to switch fan profiles correctly... super annoying. (Since windows auto turns off your OC and such when you blue screen I think it messed up ACC).
EDIT: Apparently I just had to wait... it was really really slow... not sure why there... but whatever. -
Where did you order it from?
-
chewbakaats58 Notebook Evangelist
I just got this same blue screen when opening Nvidia GFE and now when I re-open it it's just a blank black screen. -
Do we know if a 1440p screen is going to come out for this?
-
I had to reboot (after the reboot from the blue screen)... then when it came back up NV GFE asked me to accept the policies, blah blah... seemed to reset some stuff with it, but all my other settings were ok.
-
I have this every now and then. No crashes. Just the application becomes unresponsive for 5 seconds and then recovers. Annoying, but not a big deal really.
My issue is the lack of response when I do switch fan profiles. I find myself having to go from the profile I want, to another random profile, wait for the fans to react and then switch back to the profile I really want to use. Only then will the fans actually run how i want them to. -
Yep, my experience as well. I've been really wishing they had a fan profile selection macro for one of the sets of macro keys. A lot of other vendors have a key like that on their laptops. (I know you could script it to open ACC and switch, but that seems clunky... still, it's an option, I may give it a go sometime).

I’ve tried Fedora and Ubuntu and couldn’t boot either. I believe it’s because of the GPU (RTX 2080) not being natively supported yet or something.
No it’s not. Only 4K 120Hz coming at the end of the year.
