that's also how i understand it
so basically the only real gpu "limiting" factor of the 51m is its display, because in full hd it will get bottlenecked by the cpu...
-
Not realy. I can reach one-digit framerates in Full HD with 1080TI SLI and i can reach three-digit Frame Rates with an 1060 in QHD... it Depends on your Settings. Je the 2080 has not 100% in 1080p you have Room for decent AA oder DS

P870TM1, with SLI GTX 1080, but 30k in graphics seems a bit low compared to you score

You should be scoring way higher than 30K, you should be doing near 40K

Didn't you come across a MSI AB bug that lowers 3dmark scores when overlay is enabled? Nvidia still hasn't fixed the issue on maxwell 2 cards. I lose between 300-500 points in GPU and CPU.

me too.. Already ordered today. Arrival 27th Feb. I will order this RAM:
Kingston HyperX Impact HX426S15IB2K2/32 Arbeitsspeicher S/O 32GB KIT 2x16GB DDR4 PC 2666 - 260 pin
Will they fit in the 51m? or should i go for Corsair? Or be safe with 2400? I also put in a 1TB Crucial P1, 2TB Seagate HDD, + this RAM) and of course.. Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut

Well, the first one was in early November, but the one I posted is the best one till today...
Not many people are benching it, yet.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but are you running these tests on an Area 51m or a Clevo?

Ah, I didn't see at the bottom someone else had already been testing the Area-51m! Interesting stuff, for sure.

Interesting results but still not one person with thermals. Want to see if this will be a popcorn machine.Vistar Shook and raz8020 like this. -
These scores seem really underwhelming. In my current setup below I get a 20566 on the default Fire Strike. Kinda reinforces my decision to keep my existing AW 17 and just add an AGA.

The thermals has to be better than the one reviewed on laptopmag.com

Maybe the cpu puke heat over on the gpu part. Hence the low graphics scores.Ashtrix, Vistar Shook, Vasudev and 1 other person like this. -
I remember that with AGA using a desktop 1080 performance worse than a mobile internal 1080

Underwhelming? How so? These scores are right in line with desktop performance. It is sad the 2080 doesn't do better, but 2080 isn't really much of an upgrade over 1080 (in notebooks or desktops). You're not going to get this performance from a BGA notebook and an eGPU, that's for certain.
Here is a 3-way comparison. The desktop on the right is the top score when I searched for 9900K CPU + desktop GTX 1080. https://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/18011292/fs/17595622/fs/18091881#

?? Where did you hear this ?
-
Yes, an eGPU of any kind will always deliver inferior graphics performance compared to an internal installation in a PCIe slot. When connected to an anemic laptop, the performance will degrade even more.Rei Fukai, Vistar Shook and raz8020 like this.
-
It will degrade somewhat but the lowered temps of the CPU because the internal GPU is not used. The GPU in the AGA can run higher clocks compared to internal GPU which emits a lot of heat and with the poor design of the heatsinks it will heat up rather quickly. The difference is negligible I would think.
-
Egpu can only use 4 PCIe Lane (as far as i know) and gets bottlenecked by them...
-
Guys, isn’t rtx cards better on dx12 than pascal (comparison between similar raw performance card, 2080 to 1080ti for example), but not on Firestrike which is dx11, so to me timespy is more make a sense to knock pascal down. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Nope AGA is more than 4lanes I believe, only egpu TB3 Limited to PCIe3x4 lanes, AGA almost similar with desktop PCIe. -
That cant be... the i9 8950HK for example has 16 PCIe 3.0 Lanes.. 8 Lanes internal GPU+ 4 Lanes PCIe SSD and then there are only 4 left for the AGA... correct me if iam wrong...
-
That’s if DX12 works. I hear a lot of users complain when DX12 is active many games crash. Seems like it still not perfected or implemented. I for one have seen this happen to Resident Evil 2 remake, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
-
Yes AGA is 4 lanes but dedicated unlike other amplifier solutions.iron_megalith and Joikansai like this.
-
Didn't meant to imply the scores are bad taken individually, rather underwhelming in the context of laying out major coin for a 51m vs adding an AGA and 2080 Ti to an existing AW laptop (of reasonable age). I would expect to see like 10k point difference here over what I get now before I could justify a 51m. Kinda tells me CPU-limiting isn't that big a factor this generation. Just something for people to consider along with everything else I guess, everyone's situation is a little different.
-
Spending 1300 for top of the line card and AGA versus spending 4000+ for the area 51m, I choose the first that is ofcourse you already own a Alienware laptop. The resale value of the graphic card alone will recoup some
Of your money.rickdeckard likes this. -
I own 4 gaming laptops and a custom watercooled desktop with a 5960x and a 1080ti hooked up to an $800 2k panel. I think all the discussion of price to performance is a bit ridiculous. No one needs this laptop. It is extravagant and wasteful. The clevo is much better if you just want the performance without the crushed velvet lining if you will. The idea that this is portable is kindof ridiculous too. I lug around both my alienware 14 and 17 when I go to job sites. The 14 when I truly need portability and a bit of gaming power or the 17 when I want to game on the go and I just keep them both with me cause I'm an idiot. I understand everyone has a passion for these machines which is why I truly enjoy these forums but this is Alienware gouging it's customer base and offering the only thing clevo and MSI is not willing to. Truly premium build quality. The performance I fully believe will be underwhelming but I want the fit and the dream of an upgrade path is exciting. These damn laptops feel great and work pretty good. So much so that I can not find anything close and I've tried many. I'm not loyal to dell or Alienware. The second I find something else that meets my build standards and is cheaper or performs better I'm jumping ship but until then I'm stuck cause I'm a princess. The idea that a eGPU or other desktop replacement is more reasonable is splitting hairs. In for a penny in for a pound my friend. Build a desktop using older tech if you want performance, function and reasonable prices.
Typed on a little laptop that is 6 years old and says Alienware on it. -
I'm fine with this score. I never had any hope for RTX so the fact that it's still doing better in some cases and doesn't seem to be throttling too hard is a bonus for me. We just need a solid review with Temperatures. If it can maintain low 80s on stock, I would be happy as that means that it has a high chance of improving with better paste and thermal pads.Vistar Shook and Mr. Fox like this.

Why is the memory speed of area-51m stuck to 2400? Isn't 9th gen cpu and z390 capable of 2667?
Vistar Shook and hmscott like this. -
Yes I was wrong it performs same with PCIe3x4 lanes desktop not laptop TB3 PCIe3x4 lanes.
So far I didn’t experience chrasing using rtx cards on dx12 on RE2 remake, BFV dxr, SoTR (finished Main story without single crash). I tried since Turing lunch all model except titan, the only problem was 2 cards died on me.Vistar Shook likes this. -

Well I originally ordered with 8gbx2 Ram (16gb) and the 128gb m2 + SSHD, but I decided to buy a bunch of parts on my own instead and go higher end. So I called back to edit the order and they said they would start a new one for me. Maybe mentioning frequent tweets with Frank Azor helped and I resubmitted my military paperwork, but after it was all said and done I ended up paying less (in comparison to my first order) to buy the Area-51M AND all my upgraded parts than my original config. My original discount was 12.5%, but I told him about a "friend" (one of the earlier posters in this thread) getting a 15% discount. He said "does he know a Dell employee?" I said, "Well we sure tweet back and forth with Frank Azor a lot!"
It was kinda hilarious and saved me like... $300 extra
