People also forget/ dont realize is that there is 2 sides of HIDs business.
Where they seem to shine is Whitebox (clevo and somewhat MSI) and custom desktop builds. There they have access to parts and diagnostics as well as some firmware and software.
However with OEM systems, they are at the mercy of the OEM support system like everyone else.
That being said, if the customer wants a full refund or exchange for new unit, if they are within the window, it should be done and up to HID to deal with the OEM.

I made a question in HID chat very straight, I asked the dell had fixed this problem, they answered yes
Then I asked if they knew if the problem was hardware or software, answered that they can not speak.
If they know, they did not say

Your score is featured in the AW YouTube page just now. Have a look.
And for all of us, please ask them what were the reasons for the burn out issue and what have they done to fix it. You're famous now, they'll listen to you for sure.

Lol I had no idea... All of a sudden I get an influx of messages, DM's etc... all pointing out the tweet and this.
I've been following all the chatter about some of the issues with the unit... Mine has had zero issues... granted it is repasted and padded, but still. Jokingly, if any unit is kicking the bucket it should be mine due to how hard I'm driving it, but it's humming along just fine.steberg, Fire Tiger and hmscott like this. -

I think it has to do with your steady ambient temps. Do you still use that big table where you use all your laptops at once?

Why go around the porridge? Just ask what's done with the burning / smoke Area problem. About time he now have to answer honest on this. How many have to see the burning smoke before he is forced to reply/anwer honest on this?Last edited: Apr 24, 2019SlickDragon, Ashtrix, raz8020 and 4 others like this.

I have 3x laptops on my desk, 1x 34" Wide Screen Monitor + my Gaming desktop and my ambient is pretty normal at ~22-23C (indoor temp, pretty avg for US folks). There's not much open space at all. I'm curious what the ambient temp is for those having issues... Heat is Electronics worse enemy so if someone is using their laptop in a 90F/32C environment, it's a given that one would experience issues as ANY laptop would choke in those conditions...Last edited: Apr 24, 2019

About to pick mine up from HID and I intend to push it beyond the limits , hopefully nothing smokes out

Nice congrats.
Are you getting it repasted/padded already? If not, I'd recommend repasting it for sure... Heat related issues are not unique to just the Area 51M. It just so happens to desktop level parts so there's even more of a reason to give it a good oil change and freshen up the pads.
What config did you order? -
FYI. Dell have increased max hardware working environment temp. They have added 40C as max for the Area-51m vs. 35C for their other AW models. This is 18C above your daily ambient inside temp. Or in other words 80% higher ambient temp. Dell put the list higher than many of the other notebook manufacturers.
-
Did you try to put on other screen?
-
For US folks that's 95F to 113F ... I would like to interview those who use their laptops in such hot environments lol...
Quite honestly I've never bothered to even look up that kind of info as it does not pertain to me and likely the majority...Last edited: Apr 24, 2019 -
I bet not all laptops has "gpu" burned...
-
Yeah, but I prefer to do my due dilligence. Always. I want know what the hardware should be able to handle. And I don't talk about max oc'd (higher temp will always hamper your max overclock). But it seems Dell's engineers don't live in reality. Other manufacturers don't want follow Dell's path. Hence they put lower environment temp numbers.
-
Yes repasted and padded with all the works ; Fujipoly and even delidded SL 5.1 chip , 2080 & 9900k. I’m a hardcore AW Fan, this design is so unique , I will do everything possible to keep it going very strong , Thank you
Do you recommend any Laptop Coolers?

Awesome , thank you

I have the Notepal U3. I like it but I think the mesh isn't "open" enough for the fans to really do anything...
-
What of changing the fans to some high performance noctua ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I got 2 performance fans for exactly this reason and I still felt that the mesh stopped more than 50% of the airflow. My opinion is either use it without fans, or get your power tools out and cut out where the fans will go. But you have to make sure not to cut too much that the fans will have trouble mounting.
-
Cool , will investigate deeply . Thanks

I'm not sure whether to be more surprised that you're even mentioning nit picky specs off of a spec sheet that won't pertain to 99%+ of people or why they would care to raise the ceiling on the temps that are already extreme? -
Either way I don't know anyone that uses their laptop (daily) in such extreme temps lol...
Ex. Apple has listed that the max operating altitude (open air, NOT inside of a pressured cabin of an airplane) for the Macbook Air is 10,000 feet (open air / outside) ... but it's irrelevant to 99.9999% of the users... it's unheard of to hear people complaining about this, because it's just data specs, which is normal to find on spec sheets.
What other manufacturers do is also irrelevant. Doing due diligence is good, but it's really unnecessary to point out something that is irrelevant.
LOL why are we even talking about this?Last edited: Apr 24, 2019 -

Very nice. You should be all set... enjoy the new rig!
As for laptop coolers I use a modded U3 ...
Bingo ... U3 user here as well ... Although the holes do obstruct air flow, putting some Noctua's on there was enough to still benefit the laptop.
(This was before cutting the pad to fit the fans so that there is no obstruction.)
On my other U3 I have Vardar fans on there that push serious air lol...
@nkc The U3 is nice since you can position the fans exactly to where they need to be.

Can you please share your thermal pads job on the laptop's heatsink, so I (maybe everyone really want to know about but not ask) can learn from your epic archives?
Actually, I wonder if you did any special mod (even by chance) that may help the system not burned out. Or, it's certainly because we are playing lottery with bad and good quality hardwares.
I'm sorry if I asked for so much, just ignore if it's related to any personal secret you want to keep.

I'm sure more than @Vasudev struggle with inside temps around 40C. Dell is BIG in India as you most likely know. Probably other similar countries as well.
You brought up the topic... How high was the ambient/environment temps when the smoke arrived. See your own previous post

Most PC Lab testing it done at 20-22C which is way lower than ambient temps in Asia.steberg likes this.

Hmmm my hackintosh recognizes the ram as 2666 on the current bios snd it seems to be running at 2666 -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
You know what's funny, when I contacted the Alienware Support Team asking when are you releasing the 2666 MHz. RAM BIOS because you gave me a laptop with 2666 MHz. RAM in it, yet it runs @ 2400 MHz.
Alienware Support Agent: What's your Service Tag?
Ultra Male: XXXXX
Alienware Support: After checking the original order line items we see that the RAM selected and used to build your system was 4 sticks of 16GB (64GB total) DDR4 2400MHz, those will not run at 2666MHz, if you want to upgrade the RAM at a later time is possible, however at this moment we don't have a scheduled time for 2666MHZ RAM support on these systems motherboards yet
Ultra Male: wrong sir, when I opened the laptop, I saw the model number of RAM, it IS 2666 MHz. Kingston KCRXJ6-MIE 64GB 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM
Alienware Support: Please allow us a few mnutes to check real quick.
Ultra Male: no problem, this is the eBay listing of it stating 2666 MHz. = https://www.ebay.com/itm/Kingston-16gb-PC4-2666V-2Rx8-DDR4-21300-PC4-Laptop-SODIMM-Memory-KCRXJ6-MIE-/233197290773 … and also, check the CPU-Z info in the pic attached:
Alienware Support: It seems that we were wrong indeed. The hardware is listed here at 2666 as well. Sorry about the misunderstanding earlier.

Have you done any comparisons to see how much if at all it affects temps? I'm between the Notepal U3 and the Thermaltake RGB. -
You actually got me thinking. The example you quoted is actually relevant for a lot of people who own macbook pro. "The max operating height is 10000 feet" - Most flights fly at 33k feet - Is that a way of washing away hands by the companies to say "Hey, you used your laptop in the flight and hence we cannot support the issues you are facing". I'm wondering if someone was denied warranty because of these data specs.
It's always good to know the specs though

Just wondering if you checked with him on the 51m burnouts and what the underlying issue is if it's not too much to ruin your friendship, eh?

I repasted and repadded including the area on the bottom of the GPU, which does get warm so that definitely will benefit from a better quality thermal pad.
Hope that helps
Actually you're wrong. @Vasudev brought up the topic.
I had just responded to it.
Here in the States, it'd be very hard, next to impossible to find someone that uses their laptop in a 104F (40C) environment. That is not normal here State side...
Regardless of there being places and users around the World in hot climates that use their laptops in such hot conditions, the point is that it isn't the norm... nor is it ideal to use any electronic in such conditions...yet you make it seem like that's normal?
True, but that caters to the majority. If they test it in 40C temps that is unrealistic for it being an electronic component that won't see such conditions. Laptops aren't made to be used in 40C / 104F environments ... It's a given that it'll run hot..
It was bound to happen... I've been waiting for it and when it gets unleashed my RAM sticks will be waiting.
The baffling surprise was why the system launched with a 2400 cap to begin with... We're just happy that this is being addressed...
Typical Customer Service lol...
Haha... pretty much describes it spot on.
The 10000 Feet spec is for open air, not inside a pressurized cabin.
It looks luxurious doesn't it? I have the black and white one next to me... both stunning...
Wait you have a 2TB EVO Plus?! Did it release already? I know it was said to drop in April, but didn't see it for sale yet ... I have the 1TB 970 EVO Plus ... but would like to get the 2TB.
Enjoy your new rig!SlickDragon, steberg, VoodooChild and 2 others like this. -
I can't give you empirical evidence, but I can vouch for the Notepal U3. It has been a tried and true laptop stand/cooler for a number of years for me.
I'm not sure cooling pads really make a whole lot of difference. Evidence is conflicting and there is plenty of youtube reflections that show this. They certainly increase the rate of having to remove dust from your laptop though! Increasing your airflow just by popping up the back is usually enough, even without a dedicated stand. The U3 is nice because it is so modular. It isn't a huge expense... If you are in a return friendly country, why not buy both and return the one you don't like?Last edited: Apr 24, 2019Papusan and Fire Tiger like this. -

It doesn't work like that. They are talking atmospheric conditions. Planes are pressurized.
They just want to screw everyone living in Napal and Peru

All I say is 22C ain't the normal all other places on eath. Hence Dell put this max enviroment temp target. I didn't say it's ideal to use any electronic in such conditions
We talk about two different things.
If you look into this forum or other... You can see many have 35C home as normal in the summer. This means the normal max temp the most manufacurers advice as max in their specs sheet is within reach. Will this means the Area have an advantage with 5C higher temp target? Or will this expand the hardwares lifespan? Highly No. But kill it within 3 weeks or two months? Same answer... No.Last edited: Apr 24, 2019 -
Perhaps... but to be clear all I'm saying is that I don't know 1 single person in the States (heck anywhere in the World) that uses their laptop ( daily) in 104F (40C) temps lol.. that's considered madness here State side... I know @Vasudev lives in a hot climate, but I doubt he is using his laptop inside that has an ambient of 104F...
I've been to many parts of the World to know what HOT + Humid is...trust me... @Papusan you may just be used to your cool ambient temps next to the penguins.
