It's in Dell's workshop now and my repair status changed to "Additional Technical check required" ... i hope they are changing with the good revision... from what i'm reading here things are complicated as new units seems to burn and are from the new "batch"...

It seems like Dell doesn't know TF to do with this problem...

Thinking of this... i owned the Samsung Galaxy Note7 that was recalled... seems like i'm doomed with high end products...

I agree with you. Dell seems to have no clue as to what the issue seems to be and we are now a Guinea pigs paying $4000 for a rushed product. I feel the product was still a prototype at CES and they simply didn't do enough R&D before selling the system. If I were you, I would cancel the system and ask for a new system straight up. There's no way I'm using a brand new system with scratches and messed up screws.

No you'll probably need more. I'd say be generous and stack up the left over for the next repaste.

As i ordered with HIDevolution in U.S Dell told me they can't do this.. HID doesn't seem to care about my case neither... they're waiting after Dell's update...

I know this could be a very bad idea but i know why i'll never order again from HID as an European customer...

This laptop was a perfect match for me as i work from home and move to my headquarters very often but know i'm just a 4K+€ owner who's afraid to have his laptop dying at work...

I'm a project manager & developer... i choosed BYOD because this used to work very well before with my "not perfect but still work" Alienware 17R5 but now i don't wan't to tell my manager "oh sorry can't work today my laptop just fried"...

I know how you feel, I am exactly like you, I am in Europe at work I am a developer and I bought my notebook with HID, for me it seems that they are not even there for me, but they are trying to schedule a technician with dell to come give maintenance at home, I'm out of work because of this is a disappointment.

A slight FIY, Intel is releasing 8-core mobile CPU's soon. The 6-cores (it will become the 9750H) are getting a clock boost and are already available (GE75 9SG for example).

For people that got the 144hz option, have some run HWiNFO and checked whether you have a LG Philips 173WFG (IPS) or AUO B173HAN (AHVA) as Dell seems to be using both these for 144hz. The AUO has double the contrast ratio of the LG and I'm a display snob so I would be gutted if I got the LG, that's what's holding me back from purchasing. But if most people are getting AUO panels I would take a gamble, so go on tempt me.

LG looks WAY better imo. I have seen them side to side. The color and contrast is richer with LG one.

    @SacraficeMyGoat

Gelids might come only in 80x40 sizes, this is their production page. https://gelidsolutions.com/thermal-solutions/accessories-gp-extreme/, I have never seen, nor (was able to) buy larger sizes.

Regarding using them, these were the only pads that worked for me. Tried Fuji 17 Wm/k and Dell stock = no cigar. Gelids are like thick thermal paste made into a sheet .

Sizewise, if they are 80x40, I think to be safe I would buy 2 packages of each 1mm and 0.5mm. If you get leftovers, you can use them elsewhere, or later. This is my estimation for repadding one 17inch laptop.

Totally agree. As soon as I tried Gelids with LM, I haven't opened laptop for a year.

    One 17 inch for sure.

EDIT. If you happen to get Gelid 120x120 which I have never heard of.
EDIT: They exist !!! Thanx @ijozic

Very interesting, reviews say the color gamut is maybe 5% better on the LG which is pretty minor compared to the 100% worse contrast ratio. But you saying it looks good is reassuring, anyone else with info on the LG vs AUO?

    There are Gelid's GP-02 (12 W/mK) and GP-03 (6.2 W/mK) pads which come in 120x120 sizes.

Not sure if there's any difference between GP-Extreme and GP-02 since they have the same heat transfer and hardness ratings.

I've used GP-Extreme pads once, I liked how they were soft and flexible. But, when I was changing a heatsink or something later on, they were dry and fell apart basically.

Not sure if they always cure like this or the laptop was still hot (as I recall reading a suggestion on a forum to wait for like 30 minutes after the computer is shut down for them to cool down before attempting to remove them).

I think I need to order some GP-02's to replace these Thermal Grizzly ones I've used - the problem I've had with these TG's was that I found them noticeably thinner then specified (unless they got squashed during transport as a friend brought them for me on the airplane so who knows?) so I had to double them up to make sufficient contact.

    I undervolted my 9900k with 125mv. When I do a bench in Throttlestop I see a voltage of around 1.13 (@ 4.7 GHz).

But sometimes (when I’m not benching) I see voltage spikes of 1.25 or 1.3. First I thought it was when the system runs on 5 GHz. But even when I put the system on 4,7 GHz on every core I see the voltage spikes.

Also when I use static voltage of 1.15. Are these spikes normal?

Good info again!!! Before taking heat-sink off I would wait much longer, like 5 hours, with Gelids.

I hope mine are not dry, as I have them on for a year. Will check LM and pads soon, will post pics, as I want to lap heat-sink after I receive heat-sink screws coming from China (takes forever).

Funny that the 120x120 mm are not listed on their product page.

Just passed a call with Dell's Premium sh... err support, to have an update about my repair :

Operator was useless as i planned, they say the delay on the tracking repair was an indication and not a rule.

I asked them to order a new one ...

Operator told me : "nope you should wait to receive yours if there's a problem again maybe considering a replacement"

I told them : nope give me a replacement now ! I don't trust this overused laptop now with multiple repairs and stuff (screws messed up, etc...)

They say they need to have the laptop to proceed a replacement

    Told them : you already got it godamnit !! It's in your repair's workshop ! :D :D

Then she said she'd transfer my need to her supervisor .... blah blah

It's incredible to see such a low quality service ... i used to have a replacement on my previous years with my XPS when it had issues back in 2009... how could they get so low...

Going to ask once again to HID but i got no more trust in their help... :/

Asus is horrible about release actual products after they show them. Their desktop case they showed 2 CES’s ago is finally suppose to be out next month. They are very slow getting stuff out.

Quick update: The new DGFF 2080 card that I received today turned out to be a complete lemon. My haven fps dropped down from 330-340 all the way down to 120-140 and there was flickering on the display as well! Luckily I retained my old card so I'll be taking this lemon back out and doing a detailed comparison of both.

I have a 9700k/2070 configuration and have the AUO panel. I haven't seen a LG panel to compare it to, but really like my display. : ) My only complaint is game specific for some games like Fallout 4 which fail miserably to configure vsync/gsync with high refresh displays. :p

Sorry, my HID ticket is stopped, they are waiting to authorize Dell to come and pack my notebook on Friday.

Difficult of more, because it still has the time zone of the United States, so it makes communication difficult

Also on 04/05 I am moving to another EU country, I need to resolve this as soon as possible, I am thinking of asking for my money back, but I am afraid about the import taxes, I do not know if they will be returned

Simply asking for a "reasonable & not accusative" question here :

Is it possible that a good part, if not all, of the laptops dying here come from order with HIDevolution ?

Don't be rude with me : just asking ;)

I'm more interested in the 5.2/5.3GHz and low 82C in CBR20. As well how it perform and temps in Firestrike with that clock speed. Remember 3DMark suite have a nice graph if you click on "Show Details" after the bench run.
Swapped thermal pads and better paste won't make the notebook go up in flames more than from Dell's own sales channels. None know how many Area have went up in flames. Not all post info on the web.

iam interested in both as i run a delidded CPU too and asked for results many pages ago. ;) And 72 degree R20 @4700 / 82 degree 5200 is impossible with normal ambient temp. And if someone use an open window / bench outside to reach low temps it would be nice to give this info together with the results. But we havent seen such a result yet.

And if someone post unbelievable good results (clock or temp) the user should expect questions for proof. And if he then post 85 instead of 72 degrees, he should not be surprised about doubts about the results...

It most certainly is possible that many of the laptops "here" come from HIDevolution - many people who visit this forum purchase laptops from them. Unfortunately for HIDevolution, it matters not if they do a good job with thermal upgrades, or a bad one...and they have done both. The problem does not appear to lie with the thermals per se. Like any other seller/reseller of this laptop, HIDevolution is at the mercy of Dell/Alienware. First batch/second batch/ad infinitum batch, it does not matter. If the laptop or the component(s) within is designed improperly or is defective, it doesn't matter where you purchase this model from.

HIDevolution is in the business of selling laptops. If Dell tells them that the problem is "fixed" in a "new batch", but remains tight-lipped regarding WHAT has been fixed, all HIDevolution can do is pass along the "official line (of B.S.)" to the consumer...and hope that the laptop doesn't fry.

I bought mine from HID with no paste or pad job. All stock from dell. And it still failed. Don’t think this is HID specific at all for this very reason

Did you mention Donald and Ted using handles? If so, do it.
4k+ Euros would have got a fully loaded mobile workstation with Pascal, correct? Turnaround time will be quite high for outside America because these components are custom made and proprietary will only delay the repair time.
I think your HQ will be your home for few weeks until you get A51M repaired.

Yeah. People should stop bite the dust and rather ask what's wrong with the model. Only Azor, Umar and Ernie can (hopefully) give you valid answers what's up. Not any tech depot or sales channels. They all will give answers what fits the goal. Run into flames after the warranty is expired is not nice. Many have spent all their money on the notebook and hence skipped extended premium expencive warranty. They will all get *NO* Love from Dell.
