First bench using CrystralDiskMark with my ADATA 512GB Gammix s11- basically the same as the
XPG SX8200 Pro I believe, but I got this since it comes ready with a decent heatsink.

Wow. The 2nd or 3rd one in the last few days to die just during movie watching.

And to think there has yet to be an official statement or recall by Alienware. They're acting so shady about this.

    Glad I'm returning mine.

Only way is to disassemble the whole thing when you get replacement PC/mobo and verify it against @S.K *OFFICIAL* Alienware Area-51M Owner's Lounge
EDIT: Added the link for the post by SK.
Make a video and take pictures of each and every part of your A51m before sending it to Service center. They are notorious for destroying perfectly working laptops/PCs.

They might do the same, so grab a copy of service manual from Dell site for referring how to remove it carefully! It would be nice if you have precision screwdriver kits, guitar picks, spudgers for easy and painless disassembly w/o breaking anything. Ask them to be careful when picking up WLAN/BT cables.

I'm tagging @ssj92 as he is the thread starter, to me there should be a big warning in red letters in the first post on NOT to order these laptops until Dell issues a second, fixed revision and confirms each sold machine will be the "rev 2" one.

Too many died to call it an 'accident' this is a serious design flaw.

Myself I'm still waiting for the new revision so I can order one....

Use XTU to undervolt and disable any OC in AWCC so that it doesn't mess up your XTU settings. Unfortunately at this point in time you are stuck with AWCC for fan control. Hopefully going forward some third party applications will also start supporting the fans though.

You had a lemon. I had a lemon too that was sent from Dell as a replacement for my new batch GPU which was heating up just because of heat sink issue. I was fortunate enough to spot and analyze it and expose the lower spec parts being used on lemons.

Just picked up the area 51m laptop, got it set up, updated and now when in games the screen will go black and wont come back on till restarted. Reverted to a previous bios and still does it about a min into gaming. any fixes or ideas? We just bought it 2 hours ago.

update all your drivers from this thread:

    Alienware Area-51m Drivers

Uninstall old drivers first, reboot, then immediately install the new one. Most important is the nVIDIA Graphics Driver

Screw that man. Ask for a completely new replacement unit. When mine died they pulled the same crap "send it in or we can send someone to fix". Hell no! I literally just opened the damn thing out of the box. I want a brand new one!

But now even tho my 2nd one is working (for now) I'll just return it as I'm within 30 days. I'm hopping off this merry go round before it starts.

For the rest of you, you all have far more patience and a different idea of what $3-4K should get you. Kudos to you all.

By the way does anybody else think that the main NVMe drive should be placed in slot 2 instead of slot 1? Slot 2 has lots of space around it and seems like it would perhaps handle thermals better as a result

No I disagree. The true lemons are the ones who, for some unknown reason, have not died and puffed up into smoke despite having the design flaw. The norm seems to be to fail.

Look at this forum and reddit. I'd say AT LEAST 50% of the people who owned one had it go black and die. That's not lemons. That's a damn design flaw. Take the blinders off man.

For India, no 30 day return period. Dell will issue repair request twice or thrice, if its not solved you get a replacement PC marked as refurb.

Sorry to break it to you, but you need to get it replaced asap. It's a fault in the hardware, as most here have already experienced and there is no fix, besides getting a replace gpu/possibly motherboard.

I have to say, i'm very curious about the units dieing so fast. I mean after a few hours of use. Why does mine and some others keep blasting away for hours and days on end. I'm not really worried because if it's a design fault it will die within the 3 years i have my warranty.

While they will replace it, and that's good, it's the fact they're keeping so hush about the whole issues while everyone in every forum is talking about it because there seems to be about a 50% or higher ratio of working-to-dead machines.

Not to mention they have said they fixed the issues, but they're still sending these ticking time bombs out to people. And after waiting over a month for your machine, for it to die within a couple of weeks, then have to wait another month or so for a replacement is a little ridiculous.

    Keep your fingers crossed though!

You are totally right. I think alienware is really dropping the ball on communication on this one. I'm hoping mine chugs along till they admit they made a mistake and do a recall/replacement for the ones affected.

Not true. They'll definitely send the technician once or twice before approving a brand new system. Not refurbs. I've had system replacements on my m15x and m17xR3 twice and all three times, it was a brand new system. Those days you used to get one cap and one mouse pad too. I ended up getting 3 of each before my saga was over. And you get upgrades each time as well. So, I would not be worried about replacements at all. The waiting an be painful though.

Edit: and yeah, they let me keep my hard drive each time because of privacy reason.

I should know, I've worked for Dell for 2 years as a system engineer.

You'll get a brand new system. No worries man. I've had 3 AWs replaced in India and everytime it was a brand new system. Don't forget to ask for upgrades though.

i have to admit, i have not been playing many games on mine lately and reading this thread daily to watch how things are playing out. mostly because every time i sit down to play a game my friends want me to play apex legends on xbox one x instead the last month. i did game a ton on it the first month i had it though. i have one of the first delivered 9900k/2080 units running a daily overclock with AWCC overclocked @ 5ghz/1.24v/-100mv CPU, 150/200 GPU. the laptop is on and being used all the time when i am home home from work for message boards, watching videos, ect... though. i probably should just start gaming on it a ton again since it's under warranty, but i am just waiting it out to see if they really will do any recalls or fix the real issues before i start gaming a bunch on it again. it would be counter productive if it breaks now and gets sent in before they actually fix the issue.

I agree. There might be exceptions but in my personal experience, Dell have always done the right thing. You might have to wait for hours on the phone but at the end of the day, they've ALWAYS delivered. They only reason why I'm buying this machine in the first place is because even if it crashes and burns, I'll always be backed up by Dell's 4 year premium warranty.
Try replacing Asus, Razer and MSI in India. They will laugh at your face. Literally. The only one who comes close is Lenovo but I'm not interested in their BGA crapware.

Totally agree...in india warranty is main concern.. i shifted from msi ... in msi ur warranty is dependent on one damm sticker.. and for every upgrade or change u need to visit their dingy service center... dell does offer peace of mind compared to others

@iunlock I didn't do idle temp images, but for you since you requested.

What was done: Division 2 (Roosevelt Island Stronghold for lots of enemies and explosions) at Ultra with DX12 on with Chromatic Aberrations disabled (gives me headaches).

Used Intel XTU to set cores to 5GHZ and used multiple monitors just in case. Fans were set to Full Speed rather than Performance. Currently trying to get a good setting with Balanced and Performance fan settings for my on-the-go needs.

EDIT: This was while playing above my knees.

Foam dams are difficult to put around the socket (unlike video card GPU's and BGA chips where they are brainless to install), and they will probably not do anything for LM runoff from LM being used between heatsink and IHS, because the retention bracket gets in the way. It would 'barrier' the heatsink but not the IHS edges. I did this on my desktop successfully after Papusan's help, but you should do what @Papusan says and use some sort of heat resistant or electrical tape (like Super 33+) around the edge of the CPU, covering the socket, starting from the very edge of the IHS, if you want to use LM on the outside. Otherwise, stick with Kryonaut. It's safe and it works, even if you won't get the absolute lowest temps. I honestly wouldn't suggest putting LM on the outside of a laptop's IHS unless you know exactly what you're doing. It gets in the socket and you can kiss your $3,000 goodbye. You mess up a desktop motherboard and you're only out $200-$300 on average if the CPU survives.

Foam dams also oddly enough, will work -inside- the IHS as a barrier around the LM'd CPU. These should work fine.

Someone really should save this info. Hell it should be stickyed.

I mean ALL of the original shippied laptops are basically time bombs, whether people want to believe it or not.
And that's assuming there aren't underspec'd parts on the mainboard that will blow up too on those original releases.

Ok, I know that this thread seems to increase exponentially every day, lol! However I thought I'd ask this anyway.

I currently have a very nice 17r4 laptop (i7-7700hq, gtx1060 6gb, 32gb 2400hz ram). I also have an AGA w/ gtx 1080ti 11gb and an external 144hz gaming monitor and I do a lot of VR with my Oculus Rift. All this works great but I am finding that my laptop's i7-7700hq 2.8/3.6 is bottlenecking my system with high demand apps like X-Plane 11 flight sim in VR. My thought is to upgrade my PC to a rather low end 51m (rtx 2060) with a better dual drive (512ssd/1tb hd, 16gb ram). Then transfer my current 32gb 2400hz ram to it and switch over its 16gb. I'm not sure if I can do this? I would then plan to use my current AGA/gtx1080ti for mine and upgrade my wife's so-so Toshiba laptop to my old one (then with my old 17r4 specs, less 16gb ram). Is this making any sense?

My intuitive logic is that it would be better getting a cheaper 51m and using my current AGA w/gtx1080ti

Later I might look at upgrading my AGA to an rtx 2080 ti and maybe a CPU upgrade for the 51m. Will this be possible? Plus, I guess I might need to add a 240W(?) adapter to power higher demand i9 cpu's. Thanks guys.

    Hi there,

Sorry if the same question has already posted but I couldn't find it while searching this topic. I'm on the market for an Area 51m, but due to budget constraints cannot max it out. I'm struggling between two options:
    - i7 8700k, 2080
    - i7 9700k 2070

both configs with the 144hz G-sync panel and 16GB of RAM.

There is about 110 euros difference between the two (the 9700k/2070 being the cheapest). Since the laptop will mainly be used for gaming I would tend to go with the first option, but the i7-9700k is still apealing for its 8 physical cores.

What would be your recommendation ?

    Thanks.
