lol, it took only 20 minutes for me to figure out that Alienware OCC tools were screwing Throttlestop and XTU (and I'm no overclocking expert by any means). Looks like they never tried a clean install of Windows either

I don't understand what you expect from them mate, how can they give you warranty for the parts which you got upgraded through Dell?
For your initial repair/replacement, if you wanted your warranty claim through HID, you would have had to send the laptop to Hidevolution first, then they would contact Dell and Dell would in turn give the replacement laptop to Hidevolution. Once Hidevolution receives the new system, they would then ship it out to you. So, your wait period would be longer, right? Since they told you the replacement would take longer and that you're better off contacting Dell directly, they were right and you did get your system replaced pretty quickly.
Now, if you had done the thermal upgrades they offer and it got wasted, you're right to have a bitter feeling against Hidevolution and they would have to repaste and repad your system once more since your initial "upgrage" got wasted. I would be pissed too if $100 went down the drain without any noticeable benefit and within weeks of the delivery period.
If you added some extra RAM and Memory from Hidevolution, I believe you're still under "Hidevolution warranty" and if any component fails under that warranty period, then you have legitimate claim against Hidevolution and they are bound to help you out. No questions asked.
Why dont you contact them again and ask them to send you the thermal grease and pads and you can do the servicing on your own?
Don't get me wrong, I believe in any business, Customer should always be placed first before anything else and I'm not trying to support Hidevolution in any shape or form as I don't have any affiliation with them. In fact, I also have a new system from Hidevolution on it's way and @Donald@HIDevolution.com helped me customize the system. If my system fails within days of using it, I'll ask Dell to replace the system but I WILL ask Hidevolution to reapply the thermal upgrades because I'll assume that they knew that they had in fact sent me a lemon just to clear out their inventory. I've upgraded my RAM and SSD through them and I'll hold them responsible for those parts as long as I'm under warranty.

It’s not just that, they also were very unhelpful during the whole process. Never received my calls back about a refund, never even received my RMA or refund request from them after two weeks. I had no choice but to go to dell. Given the price hike from them and the premium warranty, I do think they should cover all of these parts from dell. The whole point of buying from HID is better support, warranty, and thermals. I got none of the three.

I would not even post something like that.
You could try given the evidence that has been available online. If I were you I certainly would try, and if I was told no I would try some more.
The specs of the components (old and new) and the fact they have been changed seem to point to part of the solution.
It's is a valid concern to not want to deal with the BS of a burning board.iunlock likes this. -
Really?
The actual truth is that monopulse avalanche energy could be calculated by the following formula
Eas = 1/2*I^2*L (L is test inductance usually set by OQC, varies from different companies , I is MAX current usually near the avalanche current designed)
That is a universal No Denying understanding which you may learn in your electrical engineering class.
And here you could find two variables in that formula so it is not a simple linear relationship and no one could directly get the actual max current without a experiment.
Anyway, I'm not telling the AON one is more durable than the NIKOS, Dude you need more information to come up with that conclusion not just by comparing the datasheet.Last edited: May 9, 2019captn.ko, nkc, Darkhan and 1 other person like this. -
So here comes the calculated Eas result for both AON and NIKOS according to your datasheet
AON: Eas=1/2*60*60*0.001=1.8 mJ(close to the test result 2 mJ which is actually higher for design margin perhaps.)
NIKOS: Eas=1/2*24*24*0.1=28.8 mJ (close to the test result 28.5 mJ which is slightly lower below the CL)
My point is, we need to know what the I is for AON under 0.1 mH L or NIKOS under 0.001 mH L to get the useful Eas for comparison...Last edited: May 9, 2019Vasudev likes this. -
It looks like @ThatOldGuy got ya covered with an answer.
I'd imagine that they'd try to rid the old inventory first and gamble with doing so banking on that the old stock will be fine for most people.. dirty for sure, but that's business and financially almost every company would do the same....sucks nonetheless.
LOL right? AWOC is useless anyway... it's so poorly implemented...for fan control I just go Max via bios or let it ride on the stock fan curve as if you're doing something intensive it'll spool up to max anyway.
LOL that shouldn't be too hard. Even with the impractical set up their Time Spy and gpu score was still lower than mine on air. http://www.3dmark.com/spy/7090071
To be fair, his demographic is not made up of real hard core enthusiasts. I'm surprised that Steve even did a video with him, but I get it as it'd give him tremendous exposure...so kudos for him. I think they'd give a really hard time and probably won't comply. What I'd do is to tell them if I am having any overheating issues and then they'll definitely send over a replacement, especially if you send them evidence that one of your system components is heating up beyond normal. Unless that happens, I'd say just use what you have. I am installing these heat sinks on my main power inlet mosfets to keep them cool just for extra reassurance. These are super cheap and will definitely improve their thermals.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/3X-Micro-V...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I think you do not realize that peak current is a thing in mosfets and how the p-n junction behaves when there is excessive power draw from the device under extreme load conditions while charging the battery simultaneously. Look at given curves in both datasheets and stop being a stubborn wannabe expert. At this point I feel like banging my head against the wall while trying to convince you. Go on your own route from here onwards. Adding to ignore list.Last edited by a moderator: May 10, 2019Vasudev, Fire Tiger and SacraficeMyGoat like this. -

Yeah I figured they probably wouldn't.
I'll look into those little heatsinks though. Will you post pics once you've installed them? -
Yes I'll definitely post some pics of this mod. This is a really easy one, just clean them with alcohol and peel the sticker off of these tiny things and paste them right on. Metal can absorb heat better than air so we'll definitely have some additional thermal protection.Fire Tiger and SacraficeMyGoat like this.

Forsure, thanks.
Do you know how many of these heatsinks you'll need? -
There are just 2 of those, and in this package we get 3, so one package would be good enough. You'll get a spare one. All the other power components are already connected to the main heat sink. Just these 2 forgotten souls are left hidden under the tail cover. Ideally these should have had heat sinks straight out from the factory.SacraficeMyGoat likes this.

Ahh okay. Thanks for the info. I'll definitely be applying these, as I'd like all components to run as cool as possible.S.K likes this. -
If it wasn't for fan control, I'd just set a theme on my lighting and get rid of the entire AWCC altogether. It's really useless for pretty much everything, even the things that only it is supposed to do i.e., controlling fans. Only 3 dots in fan curves? Really? These guys at Dell need to learn from MSI Afterburner a thing or 2 about custom fan curves UI.iunlock likes this.

Looks like mines are 6380’s.
Also in my attempt to remove the final screw on the DGFF card, screw stripped. I used proper sized head for screwdriver as well. The person at HID who worked on my unit overtightened it. No biggie, just cannot view the GPU and I am not risking using a channel lock to get it out.
Also found out they used LM on both CPU and GPU for my unit. Its great!
Anyways, time to see if my machine is a ticking timebomb or not. Might send it back for repair because of a very minor issue giving me OCD: the exhaust LED isnt perfectly lit!

Damn bro, at this point of time, you're using a $4000 refurbished laptop. Haha
Now what will you do if your replacement screen is LG instead of AUO which you said lacks the contrast and response time of your current AUO?
Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalkiunlock, Fire Tiger and S.K like this. -
I made sure that they'll send me the same screen that I currently have. If it is not the same, I'll check on the spot and return it. And the laptop is not really refurbished as I didn't allow anybody other than myself to touch it! So I consider it a modded one instead of refurbished.

You have to keep in mind my GPU OC really badly so GPU will be challenging. CPU I know I'll beat them for sure lol
I wanna start the #RIPLTT all over again. I'll try and make my video Sunday, maybe I'll even break a new personal record.
I've actually had good luck with their panels, especially the high color gamut ones.iunlock likes this. -
i dont claim that every display is crap, but the chance to get dirt behind your panel or broken pixel is to high. When i look at 1440p, 120Hz, IPS, desktop monitors with an AUO panel
100% panel lottery. Then i would rather take the LG one with slightly lower gamut and contrast and without dead pixel.
I have the LG one (calibrated) and when i compare it next to my calibrated IPS desktop monitor the contrast and gamut is about the same if not slightly better. So its not a big deal for me to have the LG panel.

I'm quite content with my LG display. Replacing it at this point would just be extra work. No dead pixels or other issues too. Runs quite fine and only few ms slower than AUO. I'll rather save up for 1440p display for this unit.
Anyways, I notified HIDEvolution about my two issues (exhaust LED and stripped GPU screw). Hoping I can get a swap for the rear if its a simple fix (assuming this is normal). -
That video was hot garbage. They didn't do anything in it. Usability went out the window when those 10 ft long heat sink screws were installed on the laptop with a chiller. Plain nonsense.
P.S., Consider putting conductonaut on your GPU and see if it learns some manners that way.

HID did a good job with the LM pasting. I re-did the normal paste on CPU after the heatsink removal and temps are even better. This snap was taken after doing a burn-in.

Replacing the rear vent is EXTREMELY simple. Taking the stripped screw out is a completely different story, though. I'd suggest that take a precision ifixit or some other high quality Phillips head and try your luck again. Not all Phillips head screwdrivers are created equal. Some fit a particular screw better than others.Vasudev likes this.

I am using the ifixit kit. Thus why I am contemplating using a channel lock.

I wish they had done more benchmarks like CB15/CB20 etc.
I don't think conductonaut will help, issue isn't temps. I've ran this thing on AC cooling below 50C load temp and it still had issues.
Think I just got a bad bin 2080 is all. However, I have a different AC unit at home now so let's see how it does under that.
Oh and my laptop will still be a laptop even with this method.

I've been confirmed by Donald at Hidevolution that they've indeed received the new systems with revised motherboards ("several weeks already actually" he said) and that all systems that ship out now is stable and reliable. I hope so but I guess I'll find out within 2 weeks.
I plan on putting a Intel 660p 2TB nvme (which I've already purchased on discount) on my free m.2 slot, do you think its compatible with the system and does the system have a heat sink preinstalled for the empty bay? I've reading about how these drives run cooler than most so I'm not sure if I need a thermal upgrade for it.

Any suggestions welcomed guys. Thanks

Try setting an static voltage. Check the following video for a reference and then look for your particular stable settings:

That's confusing.
You bought it from HID -> They said get the service through Dell for faster turnaround -> Dell shipped new mobo or laptop -> But warranty is still with HID and not Dell, correct? -
Does our Area 51M support pure static where the volt set say 1.25v doesn’t fluctuate beyond 1.24v - 1.26v ??
