It WILL turn yellow, even if you don't use the palm rest because the audio board gets warm and eventually it will fade the finish because there is moisture in the air that messes with warm paint overtime.

Screen protector? I think you might get away without one on this laptop because if you notice closely, the top part of the panel is lifted from the deck which creates a nice gap between the screen and the keyboard. Unless you touch the screen frequently, you might not need any protectors on this one.

My cats behave very oddly upon seeing AlienFX. They bite the AW head logo and sharpen their claws on its keyboard and sometimes sleeps on the keyboard. They play with AW mouse as well. During winter, it sleeps on AC adapter when I game and hot air blows past its face and it sleeps soundly eventhough fans are like a jet.
I don't think Cats like AW and fancy lights.

Forget cats, my 1 year old daughter types on my machine with her fists and feet while clapping on the palm rests lol. But so far it's handling all those tiny abuses quite well.

My big cat did that and ruined my desktop components. It was long time ago. It pissed right through the PSU vents and everything was rusted and broke apart.

I'm probably missing something again, but it looks like you cannot order the A51m with the RTX 2080 at the minute through UK Dell.

Not sure if this suggests anything, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Yeah places still sell them and have no doubt Dell will have them back ASAP. I'm just wondering why they've taken it off, I'd imagine if it was just stock, it would be there but maybe have sold out next to it or something?

No, you probably have a the Windows Store apps running in the background making the CPU busy.

Go to Settings > privacy > background apps

Now turn them all off except for apps that have to do with drivers (ie. Realtek Audio Console, Alienware Pointing devices)

If Dell sends out a technician to replace a part on your laptop can you tell the technician just to give you the part and let you do it all by yourself and you will send the bad part back ? I would never let a tech touch my laptop so I’m curious

I have always asked the technician to let me do the servicing personally and make him sit down, grab a cup of tea and play with my pets. And, it has always worked. Most technicians don't have a prior experience with a brand new AW system anyway so they're very happy to oblige and learn a few things along the way. And this is from a 10+ experience with a AW usage. Try it.

Why don't you let him baby sit your three kids as you go about repairing the system? :)

But seriously, those guys have to report to Dell immediately after the service is complete updating the health of the system. You will have to sign their report sheet as well. So, sending them right away will put their job under jeopardy. Let then hang out with you for a while, you sound like a cool gent. ;)

Some parts you can request "parts only service" but you have to usually get some manager approval at Dell and also have to convince them that you have the skills and experience to fix it yourself.

Okay. So I have the worst experience ever with any purchase and this computer.. what's status on other people's computers? Are they reliable?

I ordered mine March 4. Then it was three weeks delayed deliver in April. Then it broke down after two weeks. Now it's been for repair for a full month. Now they ask if I want a replacement unity which can take up to 4 weeks.

So that would be three months to get it! And I would be afraid if it breaking and go through it again.

Outrageous service and they don't offer any compensation. I mean three months after buying? With risk of it breaking again because. Who knows?

I'm going to get an msi raider and settle for less.

    Before I do that:

Has anyone used this system more than a month?

    Good to hear.

I am ordering a new one from Hid or Xotic if any of them have them in stock, and get money back from Dell. I noticed price has dropped a few hundred dollars.. So I save money buying a new one and getting money back over waiting a month for a return.

What I dislike is they said they would give me discount on their store and all sorts of things on the phone. which never happened. So going through another seller. Xotic seems really nice.

I don’t knowing any manufacturer that offers “compensation”. Dell even offers financial incentive sometimes if you try to return within 30 days.

Ok something strange is happening now... got my laptop non repaired so i can grab my parts and wait for the 0$/€ invoice Dell proposed me.

Then i've received the mail from the Swap service.

They proposed me the same setup as mine except for the graphic card :

A RTX 2060 instead of a RTX 2080... i sent some mails saying i don't wan't this 'trade' and i've got an answer from the manager telling me that in France they're only selling the RTX 2070 and 2060 :

Instead they're asking me if i want an Alienware M17 ?!?!?!?!!

    No !! I just wan't the same setup i've ordered !
What's happening with Dell right now ???! Does that mean they stopped producing the RTX 2080 due to the problems they were facing ?
    What can i do ??

Two months for me also ;)
Ok France, Germany and U.K are also missing the option.

Either they're renewing the units in Europe with the "fixed new 2080" or they're just silently killing this option...making it a huge fail...

    Maybe a combination of factors.

For now, Nvidia is having a lot of trouble keeping up stock.

Niche products are the first to get the delays

Are you on Twitter. If I were you, I would DM Azor directly and give him the entire case history. Say what you want about the guy, but he ALWAYS delivers in terms of customer satisfaction. Asking you to downgrade to a 2060 or a M17 is downright daylight robbery! Its unacceptable!
Twitter is your best bet! Try it!
I must commend your patience too, some people on this thread would have completely lost their marbles and rightly so I might add.

Ok i'll be trying that. Tweet sent... let's see...

I'm half pissed and half sad right now... but as it seems like there's no more 2080 option in Europe seems more like a general failure... or a problem with Nvidia as you sayed

What is scaring me is that it took 4 days to Dell to give me this answer... 3 months... 4000+ later... nothing.... such a bad experience

It could just be stock issues or maybe they have identified an issue thats being sorted now? The latter isn't likely, if the US still offer it, which could suggest EU stock issue?

I am considering going for a configuration of 9900K plus the 2070 and a graphics amplifier, since I got a few 1080TI and soon a 2080 TI anyway, and might need the titan rtx for work later this year anyway.

However, I have not seen any review about this laptop and the graphics amplifier. Has anyone tested it or seen links or covered on the forum? I am dying to know beucase I also have several GPU available.

My case took 3 months to get my laptop, plus one month now waiting. So I am getting a refund and ordering a new one through HID instead of Dell directly (dell is out of stock of GPU in USA also.. I think they are burning up or something. but got no idea. The service has been horrible)

    ANYWAY!

    Exciting still about the laptop!

    And

Any links on the graphics amplifier plus the 9900K? If its good Ill just do that instead of the 2080!

I don't have many solutions here...

On the last communication i had with Donald from HIDEVOLUTION they "offered" me to pay 197$ to send mine back to them and they'll pay for sending back to me if it's repaired... but that's only an option to keep the options i paid there...

Still considering this option if thing are going worse... damn !...

Over time I've noticed Dell removes an option in the configurator like they cancel orders - for apparently no reason and no one at Dell you can reach really knows exactly why - the "system did it" is the closest answer that seems believable.

Maybe there is a delay in replenishing stock? A ship or container is in route and delayed at a distribution hub?

Too many reported RMA's on 2080 containing builds, and some threshold is reached and then Pffft, it's pulled from the configurator?

I wouldn't panic yet. The option may just as suddenly reappear.

You can call in to Dell and ask, sometimes it helps to let Dell know there is a problem with their configurator, otherwise it might take Dell longer to notice the problem on their own, and then fix it.

A rule of thumb seems to be if you get a bad one, and the first RMA or home visit for repair fails - and there is no good explanation - then return for your cash back - and don't accept a restocking fee.

You can sometimes request a discount on future order, that makes them happy, or at least used to let them let go of trying to force a reorder out of you right then and there. I wouldn't accept a "credit" towards a future order, ask for a 100% cash refund.

Rather than have too much angst over it all, reset and regroup with all your cash back in your control - it's not fun if it's no longer any fun.

I've been using it quite heavily for a month although it's a separate story that I replaced the motherboard as a preventative maintenance procedure as I luckily got my hands on a better part.

Get the black. White will turn yellow in 2 weeks on the palm rests.

With deeper tones did anyone figure out how to eliminate the speaker vibration rattle from the plastic front grille? It’s annoying this happens but expected from such loud speakers. The vibration noise goes away as soon as I push on the plastic flimsy speaker grill.

Sounds like your chassis could be damaged from the front or one (or more) of the hooks that hold the black and white part together might have got loose somehow. I'd take the battery out and inspect that. Also make sure that your speakers have the rubber dampeners intact (the tiny rubber rings that absorb vibrations and are installed on all the speaker mountings).

Everything is on tight and nothing broken. It’s just at max volume on deep tones, the speakers cause a lot of vibration and you can sometimes get that high pitched plastic vibration noise, the whole laptop vibrates on max volume.

Dell's swapping manager litteraly told me this as an answer in my mail :

"By consulting with our production department, I would like to inform you that in France the Alienware Area 51 are all marketed with the two graphics cards below, ie the RTX 2020 and the RTX 2070 :

I already answered to her mail by telling her i've seen this option less then 2 weeks ago on the FR website...

It took her ... 4 days to provide me with this answer... i can't get any refund as i've ordered with HIDEVOLUTION (end of March) even if my unit only worked 2 weeks...

Hours of call... 20 or maybe 30 mails later... nothing moved..

This computer, this brand is pure scam..

The Dell rep can only see what they can see through their interface right now, and if there was a 2080 option that's now been removed it's not going to be part of their current reality.

Again, I've seen the same kind of comments before. Either they never saw it when it was there, or they are trained to not mention or offer that which used to be available but now is no longer accessible via their interface.

Was there a 2080 build option before? Then there might be a 2080 build option again.

Until then your options are limited to what they can configure right now.

After 4 days - or some limit approaching giving up - maybe it's time to pull the plug and return it for a refund?

Maybe it's already been answered, but no - unless there is a clear 30mm "overhang" past the mounting screw at the end of the m.2 socket trough to allow the extra 30mm to sit unimpeded, you need to swap that 110m M.2 for an 80mm M.2 stick.

You can fit a shorter M.2 device into a longer slot, but not the other way around.

    "Storage Devices
There are a total of three internal storage bays ( 2x M.2 2280, 1x 2.5-inch SATA III) with Optane support compared to four on the MSI GT75 or Eurocom Sky X7C. Our specific configuration is equipped with two SK Hynix PC400 M.2 NVMe SSDs in RAID 0 alongside a secondary 1 TB Seagate FireCuda ST1000LX015 HDD. Dell offers storage options ranging from 256 GB up to 2 TB, but they unfortunately do not specify the exact model names for these drives. We're hopeful that these drives turn out be Samsung SSDs since they tend to perform faster than those from Toshiba and others."

If you are really desperate, you could get an M.2 extension cable to plug into the 80mm m.2 socket and plug the 110m M.2 stick into the other end, but then you are going to have to find a place to "stick it" within the radius of the length of the m.2 extension cable.
