I can actually run -125 been on 125 for over 2 weeks , increased to 100 because of cache overclock . My chip is delidded and is a Sil lottery chip rated for 5.1ghz, so maybe that’s why it can push the envelope a bit
Settings are just basic , voltage is left at default which I presume is 1.215 going by what AWCC shows , Avx 0, Cache 47, all cores 50 and -100 or 120 or 125 ( depending on my ocd ) , every other value is left untouched . My score on XTU bench is 3500 on average with lots of background programs , max temp is 90; fan profile is full speed for that bench
I use two 330watts myself , bios says it recognizes 660 watts input
Not looked at usage since odyssey normally chews the gpu but my temp is max 75only spikes to 80 if the ambient room temp gets hot 28 but even then it doesn’t cross 80. Remember am on full speed always when gaming , the only game I play with performance fan profile is MK 11 that game seems it can run on internal graphics lol
No undervolt on GpU either
Depending on the location in Greece , 2025 can be 1950 and then backup to 2025
During Timespy 19** and thereabouts would be max occasionally 20** and back down , TS max score so far with 5ghz OC is 11,200

Update: got an Email from my service contact about my replacement Board and GPU. My on site service is delayed. Board is in stock but RTX 2080 GPU is not because Dell is replacing the GPU with an newer Revision. It should be in stock end of may.
I did not ask about information. He sent it to me on its own. I dont know if it is true but it sounds promising.Last edited: May 17, 2019Fire Tiger, LoneSyndal, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -

I plan on using my delidded 9700K at 5GHz on all cores and the LM pasted RTX 2080 at 2GHz as my daily driver. I might need to undervolt both slightly but that's my target at least. I will also be the fans at full speed while gaming because I don't mind the decibel levels at all, in fact, I might be in the minority here, but I love hearing the fans go at full ramp!
What the fun of having a Lamborghini and to use it just to drop the kids off at School? Sometimes, you'll need to use it to get the panties wet of a Russian mistress down a speedway as well.

Finally up to date on this monster thread...
2.5 weeks of intense usage of my system at 4.8~5.0GHz and GPU at 2025MHz while playing Div2, PUBG, and EFT constantly. System has yet to explode.
On a side note, the PSU from Eurocom came in and this thing is awesome beyond all reason. It cools itself and maintains a consistent 20C under use while plugged to both power slots on back of unit. I have the LG screen calibrated and this made it much brighter on everything including whites. No issues when gaming competitively (CSGO/PUBG/Apex; I am not a bad player).
Tomorrow, Dell on-site repair tech will come with my new rear LED piece. It must light up in its RGB glory! (and spare GPU screws to replace stripped one, going with rubberband method).

The difference is within margin of error so I'd not waste my money on it. I tried 9th Gen IHS on this before but didn't install it at all because it is too damn tall. I experimented with the 8th gen IHS though which was OK but it is not an even fit because of lower height of the 8th gen chips and you have to do a lot of mods to make it seat properly. Not worth the time and effort.
That 200mV p-p ripple voltage though... That's a LOT of noise! If you want longevity, I'd suggest that you don't use that PSU very often. This much ripple can fry a lot of parts by pushing them to their limits.
I have noticed that putting the laptop on a stone surface that is always cold to touch works better than a laptop cooler. I have a white stone slab on my computer table which stays cold due to aircon chilling it all day and it stays cold to touch under the laptop even after I game for several hours on top of it with the laptop.Last edited by a moderator: May 17, 2019nkc likes this. -
Just your opinion.... How about posting some temps? Maybe your claimed 72 degree CBr20 run@ 4,7? or some 5.2 Benches (R15/R20/ FS) with max Temps around 85?

Gelid GC Extreme is also a good option. For me, I have encountered a bad kryonaut batch last 2 times in a row that was out performed by MX4! I have moved to Gelid GC Extreme on my CPU as well. Also took the liquid metal off from the GPU and replaced with Gelid GC Extreme. That foam dam got in the way every time when I was opening it up so I just gave up on it. Not worth a lot anyway in terms of lowering temps.
Select "Third party" instead of reference design and also enable "Unlock voltage monitoring".
It's usually hard to QC test each and every chip and big manufacturers usually rely on manufacturer's QC which is not done very well these days. And since this is a $4K+ laptop, I think Dell should have spent a few dollars extra on bigger beefier mosfets in order to avoid any QC failures from manufacturers. Even if a PK616BA is a failed QC case, it will STILL survive 16.9Amps (which can vary with every PSU unit) which is well below half it's max ratings. It's either one or the other. Good in-house QC or choosing a part that is rated a lot higher than design. Ensuring neither of these can (and will) create the exact problems that Area 51m has been facing recently. I am glad that my motherboard has these beefier mosfets. Happy that Dell sent it over even though I never asked for it!Last edited by a moderator: May 17, 2019ssj92 likes this. -
Maybe I should try that too LOL
Mine actually does have some coil whine under heavy load -
No one has received the reworked board (better polished, better components) according to my RMA history for my customer. I guess you just got the best luck and I'm quite sure the beefier NIKOS is not in area 51m bills of materials as mass production use. But who knows whether DELL would do an Engineering Change on that in the future.

They are on my Clevo KM1 , i don't own a 51-M yet.
They push 200 CFM on the pair and i have a 3rd Noctura 120MM below that pushed around 70 CFM i think (total 270CFM).
It drops my temps by well over 10 degrees on the CPU and GPU's easily when I do hardcore benching or intensive gaming - VERY loud though on max.
Happy to throw some pics over etc

Gaming only in winter or put it in refrigerator like dave2d showed lol. Joke, it’s different depends on brands, I know well only thin light categories, Razer power limit their laptops to keep lower temperature on stock. Depends on temperatures, Blade users should changing the profile, important one it doesn’t go to thermal throttle areas, in short, monitoring temperature is needed. I think 51M is also “thin and light” desktop replacement, so without good monitoring, software and hardware knowledge users shouldn’t push the performance to the edge and Dell should provide higher bios than nvidia recommendation specs only like on to specific users like maybe in developers mode options somehow until they know it’s fine to release it on public.
-
I wouldn't consider the Area-51m thin and light. The 13 R3 and m15 I had would be considered those and just barely.
Area-51m is thick on the rear end, only thinner on the front side. It has high performance components. I think once the newer batches with fixes are released it'll be fine for everyone.
I've been doing AC cooling for benchmarking with all of my high end laptops. I think I'll try on the macbook pro next LOL
The Area-51m just needs a good paste job, and around -100mV undervolt and it runs great. GPU is perfectly fine with good temps. Undervolt helps this even further.
The system can handle stock clocks on both components no issue with good paste job, undervolt and balance fan profile.
With those things and performance fan profile, it can handle overclocks as well.jclausius likes this. -

The firmware update was not removed from the list of pending updates even after removing the directory "C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and rebooting.
I will try the registry trick that @Papusan pointed out: https://www.ghacks.net/2017/11/16/how-to-delete-downloaded-windows-update-files/
Maybe the fact that my Windows version is Home and not Pro makes the difference. I can't stand windows 10, I like to be able to control de operating system, no the operating system controlling me. Windows 10 is a pile of $hit, it's so intrusive that it's offensive.
Don't forget that OC Controls in AWCC has a bug that no matter what you set in the multipliers there are two cores that are left behind running at stock speed even when AWCC shows that you are running all cores at 5.0GHz. Anyway that delidded and silicon lottery chip surely makes a difference.
I don't use OC Controls, I have tried XTU but I prefer ThrottleStop.
Also for those interested in configuring static voltages, as you may know when you set an static voltage is TS with this machine the voltage does not stick to whatever you configured and keeps fluctuating all the time. So I tried XTU just to check if I were able to maintain fixed static voltages but I obtained the same result, so it's not a TS issue, it's just the BIOS or other thing related to our system.Last edited by a moderator: May 17, 2019Papusan likes this. -
Yes I fully agree, but the fans that they use are quite powerful and we can get them cheap on ebay from the dud old machines.
One has to spend a good hour or so taming this OS. It is not just intrusive, it is blatantly violating privacy as well as using your computer as a part of their updates distribution mechanism where you are by default serving content to every other computer in your premises. There are a TON of registry hacks that make it useable and one has to spend a good amount of time to get them all in place. I use a backup that I have saved after doing all of the necessary cleaning so don't have to do it all over again repeatedly. That saves time and headache pills.Last edited by a moderator: May 17, 2019 -
Yeah, you are right. I was planning to install the LTSB distribution and keep some time tunning it following MrFox and Ultra Male guides, repartitioning and installing Rollback Rx for the windows partition. Also I will install Manjaro or Mint in another partition for dual booting. But I will do that only after ensuring that it does not blow up, I don't want to invest so much time setting up everything before testing the system to the limit. There is also the possibility of a callback from Dell, I just hope they do that with all the 2080 models they sold so we don't have to keep crossing fingers every time we try to boot it up.
-
FYI. And info for the other Aw owners as well... Many Clevo owners have now used this 780W power adapter for 2-3 years without th problems you talk about. Some push even up to 800w with their Clevo P870 1080 Sli setup. This Clevo model suck a lot more power from the wall than even a max oc'd Area-51m. Only a very weak/bad designed power delivery won't handle it.
Edit. And have you the specs for Dell's 180/240/330w Delta power supply? As well the specs for the lower quality Flextronic power adapter Dell also pushed out for their models.
If you haven't the specs for mentioned adapters... Maybe other could post them? Thanks.Last edited: May 17, 2019 -

I received a brand new Alienware Area-51M from currys.co.uk just yesterday, but was only able to use it (and of course stress test it) during the late evening hours. It's running excellent. It's just that you need to keep an eye on which clock speed you've got the Intel i9 9900K clocked at during gaming as when it reaches 5 GHz, the temperature tends to reach 100 C and over, thermal throttling then occurs as a result.
I've found running it at 4.5 GHz is the sweet spot, temperature way below that 100 C threshold, which is what you want to keep it running for longer.
Overall, I'm massively impressed with the crazy performance coming from both the 9900K & RTX 2080. I love the machine and look forward to more system bios updates to come in the future.

If you undervolt, you will be able to clock it between 4.8 and 5ghz without hitting those high temps. Best thing you could do. Stock voltage is insanely high.

Sure I can explain it since I am the one doing the majority of the merging. Having posts within a couple of minutes of each other from the same member takes up space and artificially increases their post count. Many members are able to use the multi quote option without issue, while some respond to post after post. No rules were really broken, but teetering on the edge of "Multiple or repeated posting in order to increase your post count is not allowed."
If you feel like this is an issue, feel free to PM me and we can discuss it there. Thanks.
*on edit*
Sorry this is a little absurd hmscott. The mods here volunteer their time to help out and keep things civil/organized. I'm sorry that some of your posts were merged and you feel like it was not warranted, we try to do our best and aren't out to get you or anyone else.
Anyone is able to PM the mods or post in the suggestion area if they have questions. My reasoning for merging here was posted above. When you have 4 posts from the same user with single lines all within 5 minutes of each other, I'm going to merge them for sure. Without merging these types of posts, this thread would easily be on page 1210 instead of 1110... Again, feel free to contact me if you think I'm being unfair.Last edited: May 17, 2019Dannemand likes this. -
I just leave it set to 4.5 GHz, and have "System Managed" for the voltage settings. But I'll look into undervolting, sure. I just don't see any use yet for having the CPU running at 5 GHz, unless it's for overclocking / benchmarking purposes I guess.
The frame rate in most games I've tried so far are way over 90 FPS, which is impressive performance, and temps of just over 75 C. I'm satisfied with the performance, with only the slight overclock of 4.5 GHz.
I've found 3.6 GHz is the i9 9900K's base clock, which is still beyond clock speeds in most popular laptops.

You should undervolt no matter what clocks you are set at, it helps temps immensely and will take a ton of wear off the CPU in the future

What undervolt offset are you able to get with all cores running stable at 5GHz? The first time I performed some tests with Cinebench and prime95 and was able to get a good amount of undervolt without crashes at that frequency, but I was getting errors (and sometime crashes) when performing the ThrottleStop Bench so I had to reduce the offset a lot.

I never run TS, my stable testing is a couple runs of 3dmark and hours of gaming. If it’s been a week of gaming and no crashes or issues, it’s stable for me lol. Short TS runs could be stable, but 4 hours of division 2 could crash. It can take many days to find the best undervolt for the clock you want

Hi!
So I decided to get a 2060 with 9900k and an external 2080ti through the amplifier for a true "mobile" work station. And by mobile I mean moving it every month and unplug from 2080 ti for work on the go. I don't game on the go. And for games the 2060 will do for my needs (getting 60hz panel). For my work I'll be needing the extra vram of the 2080 ti.
A few questions regarding pricing:
SSD. Which works for this laptop? They seem to cost alot by Dell. I'd prefer to buy elsewhere myself and put into the laptop.
I want to treat this as a truly portable heavy workstation.
Tips on the SSD would be great!
I also need to repaste it. Hard? -
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Just about any M.2 SSD will work in this laptop. Samsung's NVMe drives are great options, but a little more money. You could get a cheaper NVMe such as a ADATA 8200 or HP EX920 and it would work just fine too.
You don't have to repaste, my temps were quite good on mine (although I had the 9700k). You can repaste and likely drop a couple of degrees C but it's not going to be a huge difference from what I've seen.
I think the 2060 with an external 2080ti sounds like a great option if you're not going to be moving it much.Dannemand and katalin_2003 like this. -
Yeah I don't move it much. I travel for work while developing every other weekend but while developing I'm not using more than the 2060.
Once doing a demo I need 2080+
I demo once a month only. So for those I'll just bring the amplifier onboard the plane too. I think I can fit that plus laptop.
I'll also avoid having to make a second render computer with the 2080 ti.
SSD speed is not too important to me. I need one ssd though that is fast for OS and software. Then I need another for cache render and a mechanical drive for storage.
Any brand suggestions? I could buy the alienware with a single 512gb installed. Then add my own mechanical and a second SSD for cache memory. Any brand suggestions are highly welcome!
Also
Is it hard to install in this laptop?
I just resurrected a very complicated Acer from 2015. So I'm not a total dummy but also only a single time worked a laptop -
Repaste helps more with longevity of the machine when you replace those chewing gum bars on the GPU with actual thermal pads which keeps the GDDR6 memory and VRMs cool. There is no way you can monitor temperature of every module and while you are getting a happy reading on both CPU and GPU, something right next to them might be baking itself getting ready to blow up under the radar. It's a good way to mend someone else's lousy thermal pad job on all the crucial areas as you take a birds eye view of the entire layout. Time is money for me, and if I invest an hour to potentially save several weeks time plus back & forth arguments with Dell's support guys, that's a worthwhile deal.lostclusters likes this.
