This is the kind of post this thread needs more. Kudos to you Sir.
It looks like you got lucky with the silicon.
I've the same specs as you coming up and my target is to run the CPU at 5GHz on all cores and 2GHz on the GPU. I'll post my results here as soon as I get my itchy hands on it.
Are you using a delidded 9700k by any chance?

I guess there isn't going to be an official statement at all about all the burning issues.
-
May be it is only going to be released in a closed circle of high profile people that doesn't include us. May be @Donald@HIDevolution has some info on it.Fire Tiger likes this.

This is exactly it! It won't be a public statement by any stretch of the imagination. Also, it was the weekend and no one in the first world countries works on Saturday and Sunday. They don't even check their emails I'm told. It's only the third world plebs like me who works their ass off on the weekends too and get paid in peanuts for it.
can't complain though, it is what it is and I'm cool with that.
So, give it today and tomorrow and I'm sure Donald will come here bearing good news. Like I've said earlier, my system went ahead to in-production at Hidevolution so may be they already know what we don't. Cheers fellas

Hey guys, was hoping someone could give me some insight to what is causing this error? Or if you have experienced this error recently as well..
It's happened a couple of times while playing Apex Legends today, the games just crashes, and i checked event viewer and these errors/warnings were there. I also received a crash dump from Apex, but didn't post it as i don't think it will be helpful, but feel free to let me know if i should post it.
I also updated windows today (KB4505056) Not sure if it's related.Attached Files:

I ordered a 9900k 2080 from hid on may 7th, it was shown to be in stock on their website that week but hid ended up ordering from dell anyways on the 13th. And was just told by hid that they have no 2080 inventory anymore and my order was allocated to the next batch which will be arriving sometime in june

As much as the wait is going to be a horrendous, I think you can take peace of mind that you will be getting one of the revised 2080's/motherboards if the last few comments are anything to go by. Hope the time flies for you and you are happy with it when it arrives.pathfindercod likes this. -
Awesome my man, you'll love this system I know that much! Yeah I think I did get lucky for the first time ever! To answer your question i'm actually not using a delidded 9700k Xotic doesn't offer that service, nor did I bother to actually de-lid the cpu been wayyyy to busy playing tons of games on this beauty and using a usb headset to avoid any yellowing of my chasity. Actually using the Alienware headset and the Alienware elite mouse.... I might be hooked

At least you are worthy of being notified the improvement plan Dell would take. You dug so deep in this thread and shared so many information about the potential failure factors of the burning issues.

has the announcement already been made about the burning cases ? it's been a few days already.. should i poke Azor, or can someone else extract the information from somewhere (ain't gonna forget about laptops burning up within their use case scenario) i got the feeling that Azor said that there is going to be a public statement, to get people off his back. I mean how come his response went from "a thousand shipped machines without a problem" to "we're going to have a public announcement about the burning cases" ?
i can smell a smelly smell and it ain't smelling good. -

What did you use to secure it? I suppose you can't just use any tape. -
The audio board itself secures it as it is mounted on top of the sheet. I shared pictures back in this thread. Check my earlier posts.
This is caused by unstable cpu clocks. Either you're undervolting it too low or over clocking too high for the given undervolt. I'd either bump up the voltage or turn down the OC by one notch. Nothing to worry about. My cpu passes cinebench at -170mV at stock clocks just fine but crashes every once in a while randomly until I bump up the voltage a bit to -155 mV. Same story at 5 GHz across all cores. It "looks" stable at -120 mV but is actually stable at -95 mV. Just because it "looks" stable and passed the stress test doesn't mean it's stable.Last edited by a moderator: May 20, 2019c69k and custom90gt like this. -
Tip for those who are buying aftermarket SSDs: I highly recommend this drive:
https://www.amazon.com/XPG-GAMMIX-NAND-Gen3x4-AGAMMIXS11P-1TT-C/dp/B07KZNTZYB/
I got it instead of the regular XPG 8200 Pro just because it has a good heatsink installed as stock.
And it's pretty much as fast as a 970 Pro, slightly faster in random writes but slower with sustained writes (I might be wrong but I think that's fairly accurate). I got the 512GB for a $100 but now it's just $75! Bargain!Fire Tiger, gthirst, VoodooChild and 1 other person like this. -

Alright thanks, thought it could be caused by my undervolt but wasn't sure. No OC.
My UV was at -.140 where as i normally I run it at -.130. I'll do further testing tomorrow, but it seems like -.130 may be my limit, if this is the case.S.K likes this. -
On the AW17R5 at least, I see the CPU going into limp mode (800MHz) whenever the VRMs situated below the GTX 1080 GPU got over 104C. The CPU will remain at 800MHz until the VRMs cool down to about 95C and then the CPU would resume at its normal operating frequency. When the laptop gets too hot, this cycle can repeat ad infinitum, 4-5 mins of normal operation followed by 4-5 mins of 800MHz.
That indicates to be there is an overall system monitor, someone did call it the EC ( ? ), which throttles the CPU when things get too hot.Papusan likes this. -
Those Adata drives perform very well when empty because of the largest SLC cache allocation of any ssd (almost a cheat to attain high benchmark scores), but this means the fuller they get the worse they perform, and will quickly drop below samsung ssd's in performance, their controller is just not good as samsung. Also no drive on the market is as good as samsung in heavy multiple access performance (eg, downloading files to ssd, while playing a game from ssd etc).
Anandtech has the best review of that drive:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/13759/comparing-adata-sx8200-pro-vs-hp-ex950
For $75 the adata is worth it. But Samsung Evo Plus is the best value ssd at regular prices.Last edited: May 20, 2019 -
I'm referring to the DGFF board, particularly the memory chips and power supply components (CPU isn't under discussion here). I didn't spot any additional circuitry that did this on the board. Don't forget to post some pictures if you find any.Last edited: May 20, 2019

This damn command center keeps standing like this and closes after 1 min ! i hate their software i swear its pure garbage

This is like saying, "I wear brown clothes because they show the dirt less" . Instead Dell should build using materials that are easily cleanable, after all everyone here raves about AW quality, but I have opened my AW17 two dozen times and cannot see "quality" either on the case or on the keyboard. The only "quality" item is the AUO 4K panel which is not DELL. For example the palmrest is made of this soft plastic material that scratches very easily and this is exactly where you need a hard wearing material. I have dressed mine with a skin and now I can wipe it clean, I can spill tea on it, it's great.

Forget controller / performance. The biggest reason to go Samsung is reliability. Every time I went with another brand I ended up kicking myself in a couple years when my drive randomly died. Yes most have warranty but it still is a pain to handle, not to mention the data loss.
I have yet to see a Sammy drive fail (that's not to say they don't) I still have 840 pros still alive and kicking. I personally would rather pony up the extra cash for reliability. -

Not everyone in the world has the same outlook as you do... giving advice for a comment from "200 pages back" and asking him to return the product shows how much your biased against this product in the first place. Ask him what his situation is now? Do you even know how this case was resolved?
Man, I know AW is a hated brand but some of the things said in the forums is just unbelievable... it's as if there is no better desktop replacement in this world other than an ugly clevo.. which all decked out is more expensive than an AW 51m by the way.

Yeah, I won't argue that Samsung is still king of reliability, but ADATA is great value, I would say second best.
Only time will tell about reliability of this ADATA however. I will backup the image every so often to a HDD.
I know the ADATA performance drops off as it gets full, but I'm happy with midrange performance as it's quite a jump from my old 840 Evo
Yes, lots of space left even with the heatsink.Last edited by a moderator: May 20, 2019VoodooChild likes this. -

Thank you -
That's it,
Got the confirmation by the French Community Manager on Alienware's Facebook that they have quite finished editing my credit note...
Once I'll have this credit note (after sending my laptop I guess), I'll be facing some options, and I need you guys to give me your best advice about those options I considered :
- Option 1 : I keep Dell's credit note, wait for the RTX 2080 to make it once again on the E.U / French Dell's product list and purchase the same setup with the credit note
- Option 2 : I convert the credit note to a refund and buy me another laptop, not a bulky Clevo one, let's forget about top performance... I'm talking about something more like a Razer Blade Pro 2019 with RTX 2080 Max-Q or ROG Zephyrus or MSI ....
- Option 3 : I convert the credit note to a refund and use half the money to build a pretty good desktop gaming rig and buy with what's left (+ some moar money..) a middle class gaming laptop (Dell G5 or Alienware 17m or Asus or MSI)
I got to admit... Option 1 still makes me crazy... my laptop only worked for about 2 weeks but when it worked it blows everything i've ever know period ! But with that kind of post on Twitter :
https://twitter.com/406394119/status/1129469397251137536
We still don't know if Dell fixed that poor machine :'(
Option 2 is one of the less appealing option for me.
And I'm really considering option 3 because, I still need something powerful @ home and something that could run decently average today games like PUBG/Overwatch/Anthem/Apex,... on travel as I work from home 3 days per week then travel for about 4 hours to Paris to the headquarters of the company i work for...
Thanks for all your advices

Really only you can asses your needs vs wants. The 51m can serve as a desktop and notebook for travel. You cant beat a high powered desktop if that's an option. Rest assured Dell will fix the issue one way or another. Only bad thing is waiting and some loose out on part of their warranty while waiting. In the end you know your needs better than we do. -
I was asking because I was close to getting an Alienware and would opt to get the cheapest screen possible to save a few hundred bucks since the built in screen would rarely get used.
I actually use an external 50 inch 4k ips screen with my gaming laptop lol that's why I was asking. With a wall mount you don't need desk space. And I do like having the laptop vs desktop for when I would rarely want to take it with me which happens around twice a year if that. -
@Nomadsan17 an issue with Option 2 is that those units coil whine and overheat easily under load.

Voltage regulator module
Safe Operating area - it is a graph of typically voltage / current @ temperature -it is a guide for designers to make sure their transistors (or more complex modules) are not going to suffer silicon damage, aka second breakdown
For basic example this transistor may say "max voltage 150V" "max current 16A", but looking at the SOA the point 50V / 1A is OUTSIDE the SOA and very likely to burn the component . The trick here is that both 50V and 1A are WELL WITHIN the operating parameters of this transistor, but the power (50V x 1A) is not at all.Attached Files:

Yes, I own 4 Dell laptops, as per my sig, anyway I have no problem with Dell using cheap plastic and would not think to slate them on this front,, however it rubs me up the wrong way when people praise said keyboard or palmrest quality... The XPS 15 is definitely amazing but the AW17R5 certainly is not (hence I have put a skin on it) and it seems the "oh so perfect" A51m is not that great either, discoloration after a few weeks' use?! Therefore my comment. I am not a Dell hater and not a fanboy either. The AW17R5 has driven me crazy how many times I have had to repaste it. I was expecting much more from the AW17R5 after the experience with the R4, and then you'd think the A51m would be perfect in every respect.

That is good because it still has the soft touch but doesn't attract oils barely at all.
