Hey guys, can anyone of you check your AWCC Fx tab and see if you can change the lighting to any other mode other than solid colours. Mine has no rainbow effects..nothing. Just a solid color option. Also, how do you download themes for it and if you have some, can you share it here?
Thanks

Thanks for sharing, I also saw the white version of the m15 on the intel event. But I don't get it. I very recently asked frank on twitter if there were any plans on making a small version of the Area 51M. basically something like an Area 51M, but smaller that only has 1 PSU.
And he said that they had no plans for it. And now they suddenly come with this.
Is this a complete new replacement for the m15 and m17? Or is it like the exact same machines with a simple new design? If it's the 1st one, I don't get why they released m15 and m17 for it to have such a short live span.
But damn, If I knew this was coming I might have waited getting an area 51m. Although I still have the 2nd batch laptop. If it were to burn again I guess I might perhaps talk them into getting me one of these new ones instead. But will have to see their thermal performance. If it is anything like the current m15/m17, then it's a no go for me.
Also any official news from Dell yet regarding the Area 51M and RTX 2080 issue? I was out of country previous week. -
Better design and portability, no need to be so cynical.
What's more, no smoke
Frank is just A liar, haven't you seen his reaction on the burning issue?
Donald has posted the official issue stating Dell has tried the improved components but still keep catching fire.
So every area 51m available now could still be a faulty one.Last edited by a moderator: May 28, 2019Papusan, martin778, Vasudev and 1 other person like this. -
I've been lurking around and reading everything since this thread started. I was/am holding off buying A51m because of the burning issues and then @Donald@HIDevolution confirmed it's not just 1st batch but also second that is plagued with same. MSI may have went soldered route but if the laptop is reliable and dependable with 5-7% less performance (which is where other RTX2080 laptops are according to Notebookcheck) I think its still a better buy, at the moment. If cooling solution is as advertised it will have better headroom for overclocking reducing performance gap further. GT75 when it came out was hands down best in keeping components cool out-of-the-box and I expect no less for GT76.
Again as many before me have said, full credit to Dell for trying but undeniably they rushed to release this one.
Area 51m R2 could be a winner if Dell can sort these issues and keep DGFF alive.DrewN, Vasudev, jclausius and 1 other person like this. -

Has anyone experienced any issues with the latest nvidia drivers that were pushed yersterday through nvidia experience? The first thing I noticed is that DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) settings changed "automagically" to 2x, while previously it was off in my setup, so I had to disable it.
The second issue is that I'm experiencing a FPS drop in The Division 2 for exteriors. Previously I had between 110 and 130 FPS, while now I have 80-100 FPS with the same cpu and gpu settings. For the interiors it seems to remain the same, between 130 and 144 FPS.
Maybe DSR was not the only setting that changed or maybe the new drivers are causing problems with this game. Or maybe it's just me.Last edited: May 28, 2019 -

I think it's just a design replacement for the m15/m17 rather than the small bother of the A51m. The main premise of the A51m is having desktop socketed/replaceable components and the m15/m17 series seems completely different species to me that are focused to compete int the ultra light market. The old design of the m15/m17 looked a bit dated to me, so it's good that Dell is replacing it with a better looking case. On the other hand, if the new models have soldered RAM it will be a big miss.

Hi guys

What do we know from the new area 51m, the problem solved?
I think it will burn again

hi xatanú que sabes tu?Xatanú likes this. -
After my 1st burnt Area 51M I got so sceptical, that my laptop is now downvolted, and set to run at a lower max Frequency so it runs at roughly 96% of its full performance at max load.
My undervolt is still slightly unstable, as I get very rarely a GPU disconnected error, but I can live with it.
Because now I have 135Mhz overclock on said Voltages, I have to lower it like to 90MHz, but then the temprature increase is rather visible, so I'd like to keep it at 135 at the cost of very slight instability. Or dropping the performance even further is also an option of course, to like run max at 1780Mhz or something like that.
But the fact that I have to do it is simply sad, This should be a desktop replacement, heck even better than some desktops at this pricepoint, and is also rated to be overclocked, yet I'm undervolting and downclocking instead.
I'm having my Alienware Command center open on the laptop monitor (which is my 2ndary monitor) at all times on the temperates, simply becase I can know at all given times at what temperatures I'm running at.hmscott likes this. -
You've been had. There is no such thing as a true enthusiast/pro/gaming desktop replacement. You can't have a water-cooled dual Xeon with 2x2kg Noctua radiators and 2x 280W Titan RTX SLI with 512GB of RAM in a laptop. You can have a pseudo-desktop replacement like the A51m, but it will necessarily be limited. That's fine, obviously there is a market for such systems, where people prefer the limited portability to full desktop configurability and performance, but let's be realistic about the purpose and limits of such pseudo-desktop laptops.Last edited: May 28, 2019

Hey Lucas, how are you? It's good Dell support is responding well and replacing the dead laptops with brand new ones and hopefully fixed (let's see in the future). I just hope the replacements arrive ASAP.
On the other side, I'm afraid we don't know much, Dell is being hermetic in this matter and there is no official response yet.
If you are using Aferburner I suggest you use the OSD funcionality to show all the monitoring data you need directly in game overlay.
I think the whole point of downvolting is looking for better temps and have more headroom for overclocking, we shouldn't be afraid of pushing our laptops to the limit, if it burns better soon than later. If Dell is not able to fix all the issues after several replacements then it's time to ask for full refund to them, no matter if we are in the return window or not.
For the moment I have been playing with capped frequencies, [email protected] and GPU@1740MHz but just because I was looking for a silent experience, not because I'm afraid of burning. My only concern about burning is if it happens while I'm not at home. I plan to play a long session (when my wife is not at home so I don't disturb her) with fans set to performance or max, [email protected] and GPU@1950 with undervolt just to be able to sustain these frequencies.Last edited: May 28, 2019 -

It's just an m15/m17 replacement. As regards to time-span, who knows. Perhaps the first variants didn't sell well (those bezels were certainly not a success, being a) glossy b) noticeably bigger than the competition making it hard to compete size wise; e.g. all the reviews I've read made a note that the laptops are not exactly in the same size class as e.g. razer blade 15 or gigabyte aero 15), while the Area 51m design style seems to have received universally positive feedback.
I definitely prefer the original angular design of the exhausts, but the display size and shape with those big bezels looked pretty ungainly when opened up. Plus, the Area 51m style certainly feels more like an Alienware product. -
soldered non user upgradable RAM on a 2.63kg laptop? calling it nonsense is straight to the point. you might wanna rephrase your "better design and portability" comment. now this is cynical.

Now its easy to replace everything along with mobo just like Apple. If RAMs dead you need new mobo or else sacrifice dual channel perf. for single channel RAM.Papusan and alexnvidia like this.

we dont even know if the RAMs are soldered in dual channel or single channel. LOL!

Judging from design in <brands removed> some models have 16GB RAM soldered to board and one slot is free which can take 32GB RAM in single slot totaling 48GB DDR4 2400/2667MHz.Last edited: May 28, 2019

this is probably the wrong thread to continue this discussion but i gotta point out that ALL the RAMs you'll ever get are soldered on the motherboard. no extra slot whatsoever. pretty bad design for a 2.6kg laptop if you ask me
-
The reason he did that is to keep uninformed customers uninformed, and only accept your creditcard swipes. Someone said it already, but i feel the same way AW will probably stop existing and be merged with the XPS line.
Why keep two laptop revisions alive when you can R&D one chassis and extract 3 laptops from it. (XPS 13, 15 and probably when the time is right a 17 one) it's not only cheaper but you can ask more for the same. The AW produced today are not the same as 10 years ago.
Where being screwed and people are still loyal to the companies that screw them lol. I made up my mind, although i loved AW soldered RAM is just too much for me to handle.Vasudev likes this. -
Upgradability is just a joke especially for the dgff model. What are you preparing to use that limited upgradable socket for? 8700 to 9900k? Rtx2060 to rtx2080?Those things would all become garbage equally when next-gen came out as it could likely die of it's poor compatibility.

I think once you get over that paranoia you should finally try to repaste your system (I remember reading you did not do so with the replaced system) and see if that improves your temps. I have mine with LM on both CPU (delid with LM between die and IHS and normal paste on top of CPU to heatsink) and GPU (foam dam with LM). If the worry is that you are not near desktop performance, at least know that you are achieving these performance numbers on just fans and not third party cooling options.
My current goal is peak temp at 80~85C while at nearly 2100MHz for GPU and 5GHz on CPU.
EDIT: For those of you wondering about battery... I achieved 3 hrs. This is the reading when at max brightness with my current profile. https://i.imgur.com/PYccKnJ.pngVoodooChild likes this. -
The pseudo-reviewer is a bought and paid for muppet. These honeycomb grills look like they would have less throughput. Soldered. RAM means they.can finally charge an arm and a leg for RAM upfront, no upgrades. Ram fail=Mobo replacement.

My system seems to be delivered within 24h, so a lot of tweaking incoming. Is there a collection/links to any of the comments/guides from this thread? Having been in here every day for the last month I’ve just noticed so many useful tips and links for everything from undervolting, overclocking, color calibration to simple bug reports with its solutions. It’s awesome
But now I have to scour 1.2k comments for them

It’s thin light category impossible to fit 2080, probably they do some improvement on cooling that make it has soldered ram and smaller battery capacity, m15 r2 is sexy and easily to bring around which I like.
At least I don't see any smoke issue coming out from mobo on Blade 15 in this one year
-
No need to scour. @Ultra Male has an entire thread for the LG display calibration file which has darker blacks and less whites on colored areas. Been trying to make my own profile as I get used to the i1Display tool.
As for the undervolt/overclocking. Always start small using the tool of your choice (Intel XTU or Throttlestop).
Once you updated all your drivers, AWCC+OC Controls, and installations - make a backup image of your system so when you get weird errors after updating OC Controls or issues with clockspeeds going to crap, you can revert to last known good image.

Can someone help me?
My alienware command center kept telling me there is an update and was always failing to install, and I also knew there was an update for OC controls so I uninstalled that one too.
I installed back the command center, all fine. But then the OC controls keeps giving me fatal error upon installation. See log in the attachment.
Now that OC controls is absent, even Intel XTU wont'start saying that the necessary drivers are missing. Any help?
EDIT: I think I found the issue, this is where it fails:
[4390:2A4C][2019-05-28T18:23:13]i301: Applying execute package: Alienware_OC_xtu6.5.0.114.msi, action: Install, path: C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\{3BC71965-F862-4F42-8837-BC043434078B}v1.2.34.1214\Alienware_OC_xtu6.5.0.114.msi, arguments: ' ARPSYSTEMCOMPONENT="1" MSIFASTINSTALL="7"'
IT states Alienware_OC_xtu6.5.0.114.msi
So basically Alienware is using intel XTU for the overclocking components.
Thing is, I already have a newer version of interl XTU installed on my system, and I think the newer version being present on my system (Intel XTU 6.5.1.321) prevents the previous version to be installed.
Will try to uninstall Intel XTU and try again.
EDIT 2: That wasn't the solution.Attached Files:

Same exact issue I had earlier. It has something to do with all the VB redistributables when installing OC Controls. When I contacted Dell earlier on, they said to do an OS Recovery (which I did and started making regular backups since so I dont have to reinstall everything).
I havent been able to recreate the issue, but if you dont want to recover your OS, I say try dealing with those redistributables.

Yep, that might be it, I think indeed the one I downloaded is also unsigned.
Dammit, I cannot change my thermal profiles or anything anymore because of this.
And Somehow system restore was disabled, so I cannot rollback, GREAT!

Update:
After my extensive testing on this system for the last two days, I've realised that trying to run 5Ghz on all core on this laptop is a pipe dream, at least on my chip.
Note, its delidded and Liquid Metal pasted. I've got it functional at 4.8Ghz all cores (-.100mv undervolt on cache and core) and this seems to be the sweet spot for me. 2 hours gaming session on it amd the temps hovers around 75-80° and I can live with that. The clocks are rock steady!
For the RTX 2080, 2Ghz is impossible! After numerous crashes on Kingdom Come Deliverance, Far Cry 5 and Metro Exodus, I've found its sweet spot of 1950Mhz (hovers from 1920 to 1950, +500 on memory) with an undervolt of 975mV. Temps barely goes above 75°!
So, this is my daily driver for the foreseeable future. It churns through everything I throw at it and the screen is the best thing I've ever used on a laptop form factor.
If it burns, then it burns. Hope this helps someone and you can take it as a baseline figure.
Cheers.
