I'm wondering if, from now, we better mention famous Youtube/Tech guys/websites on Twitter or Youtube... I think we need to get this story known of the IT world...
Even for a niche product...
What do you think about this guys ? -
"Hi, We are concerned to read this. Could you elaborate the issues on your system? Could you direct message me your system's Service tag, so that I can verify the details and check for the available options. How to find Service tag: https://dell.to/2VQR6WA -Vanitha"
Lol what a lame copy-paste reply from "Alienware Support"hmscott, LoneSyndal, Rei Fukai and 1 other person like this. -
This thing should be completely escalated or Dell will continue his tyranny.

Now they have just added the 180w vbios download. The system is going backwards not forwards.
hmscott, Rei Fukai, Fire Tiger and 2 others like this. -
Lol, and they keep asking me for the service tag in private even after stating clearly that I don't have any problem for the moment. I don't know if they just want to check if I'm a legit owner or just some sort or troll. Maybe I should tell them my service tag in case that's the only way they take the claim seriously.
" Description: This package contains the VBIOS for RTX 2080 GPU. It optimizes GPU performance and thermal behavior on Dell Alienware Area-51m system that runs Windows 10 operating system. It is recommended to update the BIOS to version 1.3.0 or later before installing this update."
WTF... is this a joke??
If things are going to be this way then we should be able to opt for a full refund even when the return window is over!Last edited: May 31, 2019 -

Anyone with bios 1.5.0 or older mind looking at GPU-Z throttle setpoints in the advanced tab and posting here?
Papusan likes this. -
All should post info from GPU-Z (New vs. old bios) and confront Dell (Aw) support, Azor and Umar etc with it.
Either...
1) Damage control. Like this...
2) Give Dell time to find the problem.
3) Bugs with the new bios.
Increase clocks or that clocks run below default. But not really an error.
Yea, Its called damage control.

180w vbios is finally released,wow!
Guess somebody is using the time stone!c69k likes this. -
FYI 200w vbios is missing right now lol

Nope. Still there. Click older versions... https://www.dell.com/support/home/u...wt64a&productcode=alienware-17-area51m-laptop

They should be two different download options imo. 200w become the older version. What a funny story!etern4l likes this.

this was after I turned off all limits I had set and OC and rebooted.

Here we go boys, AW damage control has begun!
Frank and his bunch of incompetent goons are at it again! Are we going to just take this?

Which system bios and GPU bios are you on? -
bios 1.5.4 GPU 425.46 Also tried the latest from this week from Nvidia and then reverted back to latest from Dell.

The NVIDIA drivers won't change the GPU throttle set point, that's controlled by the GPU bios. Are you running the 200W GPU bios? -
What fan Profile?
-
Mine does not show thermal limits for this tab?
Fan Profile? Full Fans but certain Games like Rage 2 hit 78-79 and drop to 500mhz, If i set a limit of 77 it throttles a few hundred but not 90% to where it is unplayable.
Yes 200w vbios.
want me to load 180 and see if anything changes?Last edited by a moderator: May 31, 2019Xatanú and custom90gt like this. -

Now we just need someone with 1.5.0 and earlier to post their GPU-Z throttle set points.
You can, but I would keep the 200w and go back to 1.5.0 system bios to see if that changes anything. -

New VBIOS is out guys. I'm on my phone so I can't post the link
-
Can't go back to 1.5.0 that's not an option any longer.
-

Why can't you go back? Is it limiting you?
Here is the link, it's under older versions:

So yeah it looks like 1.5.4 introduces a GPU throttle Set Point at 75C, just like they did to the XPS 9570. I'm hoping downgrading from 1.5.4 to 1.5.0 fixes that, then there would be a way to resolve it (at least for a while).
-

I assume all this only affects the 2080? The 2070 would remain unaffected?

I don't have any evidence either way. My deductive reasoning leads me to believe they will throttle all of the cards...raz8020, Dannemand, Xatanú and 1 other person like this. -
Dang! It actually let me go back!! Thank you so much!
Back to normal!
Fire Tiger, Xatanú, LoneSyndal and 2 others like this. -
Now 1.5.0? And if you Flash 1.5.4 again you have 75 degree again? ^^
-
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Well I'm glad you could go back. Eventually Dell will release a new bios with a new IME update and will probably block going backwards from that revision. My hope is we can sway Dell into removing the 75C set point for the GPU, but I wasn't so lucky with the 9570 (as can be seen in @Papusan's post). I would recomend against updating the bios on the 51M past 1.5.0...
-
Yeah. The latest bios update was intended to reduce smoke and burn up.
They say the problem ain't real (RMA or flaws is extremly low), but cripple firmware. Oh'yeah... They know. And AW's CEO Azor know it very well! Hence Quiet as an oyster!

Downgrading to BIOS 1.5.0 now...
-

Heheh. I can visualize the expression on your face after you upgraded to 1.5.4 then read the comments here and then quickly downgraded to 1.5.0.

They said it's to reduce thermals. Reducing hardware failures would just be a guess at this point since there are reports of at least one system going up when at idle. They did it to the XPS 9570 even though there were no reports of hardware failure. My guess is some bozo who dell contracts to do their bios says it's a good idea so that's what Dell does.raz8020, Papusan, Fire Tiger and 3 others like this. -
I would assume yes if I went back to 1.5.4 but I am not testing that.Spartan@HIDevolution and Xatanú like this.

Everyone should downgrade while they have the chance. Only a matter of time before they lock us out from downgrading again.
A burnt GPU is better than a throttling GPU I say....
Sent from a Galaxy S9+ -
Reduce thermals will reduce stress on components. Aka they will have a longer lifespan. See.. Less RMA. RMA and tech support ain't cheap. Re-call of the products even more costly. They went for the cheapest and easiest solution for themself to fix a problem. See also... http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-owners-lounge.826831/page-1101#post-10911459
And Dell use same engineers for AW and XPS.Last edited: May 31, 2019 -

Right, but speculating that it's the fix for systems burning up MOSFETs is just that, speculation. It could be people complaining about high temps which likely far outnumbers the amount of complaints about burned up systems... -
Bios 1.5.4 GPUz
-
Could be. But why would they give a damn in peoples complaining about too high temp on Cpu? This doesn't smell(s) well.

You're positive you are on 1.5.4? You would be the first person on it without having a reduced GPU set point. What does your NVIDIA bios tab show?toughasnails and katalin_2003 like this. -
Not my A51m. Asked for screenshot in our german forum. Will ask again if it is realy 1.5.4.
Maybe its a bug with AWCC ? Because silent fan profile has 75 degree limit... Maybe its just a bug? -
And he have the 200w vBios as well?
-
If you have OC controls on in AWCC it is set to default temps at 87. turn off oc and reboot then run gpuz on 1.5.4LoneSyndal likes this.

He said definitive Bios 1.5.4 since yesterday!

Man, I need to find a dedicated BIOS modder. I will start with an initial funding of $200 donation if they can get it working similar to them unlocked A17’s with the features we need.
