No dude, I have 8TB just because I like to max out the storage. I hate the feeling that I am limited if you know what I mean. I have a 4TB external WD USB HDD which I use for backup.

Hi all.
Sorry to ask this but I just need to clarify something. I have not turned on the 51m for about a month. Busy times!! Anyway I just booted it up and it did a bunch of updates including firmware. Now when I play games, I get slowdown which lasts for a few seconds, sometimes longer. Please tell me this is not GPU throttling as is being suggested on this forum. I never had this issue before and quite frankly if this is the case now I want my money back! What has changed exactly? My system ran beautifully prior to these updates. Not happy right now! Cheers. -

Sounds like the GPU throttling bug. I would go back to bios 1.5.0 or preferably 1.3.2. See @S.K's guide here.raz8020, Papusan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

I only see 1.3.0 on Dell's site when I hit older versions not 1.3.2?custom90gt likes this. -

You're right, dunno why they removed that. I'm sure someone has a copy of 1.3.2, if not 1.3.0 will work just fine.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Changing bio's is a waste of time. When Dell get around to fixing ram speeds most people will change what ever they are using for the extra speed.

So I noticed updating to 1903 re-enabled fast start up.
Upon booting up (after full shutdown), event viewer said my system has returned from a low power state (sleep time/wake time.)
It appears instead of shutting down, it went into sleep mode.
Anyone know if this is due to fast start up being enabled? I disabled it again but haven't tested. -

Hello,
Who knows, how many phases have the rtx2080 from area51m?
Thanks! -

Phases for the current to flow through. How more phases for example a psu uses, the cleaner the power delivery to the components will be.SacraficeMyGoat likes this.

The new m17...
Experience unprecedented performance thanks to hyper-efficient voltage regulation engineered to exceed Intel® and NVIDIA® reference design requirements. With 8-phase voltage regulation on NVIDIA® RTX 2070/2080 Max-Q design graphics and 6-phase voltage regulation on Intel® Core™ i7 and i9HK processors, the new Alienware m17 is hardwired for greater efficiency and sustained turbo frequencies, enabling longer stretches of GPU and CPU high performance. -
They can keep there faster ram speeds if they do not fix the GPU throttling. I rather have no throttling than faster ram which nets to almost nothing in games.
-
Exactly. From a very basic standpoint the power phases are like the firing order of the cyclinders in your car.
For instance, if the board (or graphics card) has eight phase power, then the incoming voltage from the PSU is made available to eight buck converters* (each being a transistor to take the voltage load from the PSU, and 2 switches that alternately charge and discharge the load from an inductor) - so these eight converters fire through one cycle (I.e. at 45° if one cycle equals 360°) through their seperate switches, and are rejoined into a single board input. Technically, dividing the incoming current through seperate switches/phases reduces heat and voltage drops... So, the more converters (or phases) then, theoretically, the cleaner the input power since you have incoming power more times per cycle -less opportunity for current drop between discharges.
Using the car spark plug analogy, it would be akin to an 8-phase board being a V-8 engine, while a 4-phase board would be an in-line/V-4 .
The +2 part of the equation (8+2, 12+2 etc.) refers to the same principle, but in this instance the current is going to the memory controller (either chipset, or in the CPU if the controller is part of the CPU package).
* this converts the load from the PSU into a load that the CPU and board can utilise (a DC-to-DC converter). -
Say no more! This will be my new backup solution

Thought I fixed it before, but it occurred again. Now I think I actually found out what was causing the issue. The wireless xbox one controller adapter that I was using for whatever reason started being seen as an ethernet adapter (I've used it since I got the laptop in March without issue). It started showing as Ethernet2 in my network choices. After doing some google searching, it seems like some people have this problem and it causes issues with their primary Ethernet port constantly being kicked off for the xbox adapter. Still no fix from Microsoft. Luckily I have a newer controller and was able to pair it with my 51m via bluetooth, so I'm no longer using the adapter and have had no further issues.
EDIT: I lied... of course right after posting this the issue occurred again. I've decided that its most likely hardware related and I'll reach out to support. I keep getting this error now, "An Ethernet cable is not properly plugged in or might be broken".Last edited: Jun 7, 2019 -

Does anyone know are we able to freely switch between the 200w and 180w vbios? I'm on 200w, but I'm tempted to test 180w, but don't want to get stuck on it...

I know there have been a couple of people that went to the 180W bios and then back to the 200W. There is no restriction AFAIK.hmscott, Papusan, Spartan@HIDevolution and 2 others like this. -

So I completed the 180w vbios, I didn't do any benches, but I can honestly say I'm not noticing much difference in gaming. Assassin's Creed Odyssey runs at about the same 60-79 fps, temps maybe 1-2 degrees cooler...

Just 6? 6 Doubled. The 8-phase voltage regulation for graphics in the thin Alienwares is single phases. And please don't listen too much on fancy words from an salesman or any sales department
And First to market... Reminds me very much about what I try to avoid... Guinea pig versions.
Probably a new soon Dead walking graphics in the Area...
Alienware area 51m laptop black screen during windows setup and now can’t boot for more then a minute without the black screen -
Here's the 190W VBIOS in a package with a batch file to make it easier to flash.
I got 3 samples from various systems and compared them to be sure of their integrity.
I also flashed and tested it.

IIRC, 6 phases with doublers is 12 phases, but the PWM frequency is halved by using doublers, which is a drawback. Doublers are used because until very recently, no VRM controllers could handle more than 8 phases, so this is circumvented by using 6 phases with a doubler circuit and two power stages to make them 12 phases. If the VRM could actually handle 12 phases without doublers, then the 6 doubled phase setup would be inferior to 12 non doubled phases since the VRM frequency would be twice as fast--lower ripple and less noise.
Some of the brand new X499(?) Ryzen 3000 boards now use a brand new VRM controller that can handle 12 phases without doublers. Complete overkill but forward is better, always.
I'm not touching the argument of whether 6 phases with doublers (thus 12 phases total) are better than 8 phases without doublers (for boards with VRM controllers that can only address up to 8 phases).raz8020, Papusan, VoodooChild and 3 others like this. -

Could you fix the link for the 51m drivers ZIP file please. -
Hi guys,
I need help with something about my 51m. I recently bought an 8K TV and wanted to connect the laptop to it. I tried connceting via the HDMI port and only 4K was recognised. I am certain that this is possible but can't be sure how. If anyone has an idea It would be very helpful. Does the HDMI port on the 51m support this? Thanks in advance. -
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Sadly I think the 51M only has HDMI 2.0 which means 4K is the max supported. You can use the displayport, but I believe it is limited to 8k @ 30Hz...katalin_2003, toughasnails and Vasudev like this. -
8K @ 30 would be great for me, can I use the display port to connect to TV's hdmi?
-
Does a 8k tv don't have displayport?!
-
Samsung Q900r only supports 8K at 30Hz via HDMI and I’m fine with that. I just need to achieve it
-

Interesting, I figured it would have displayport. Perhaps you can go from displayport to HDMI @8k, but I have no idea sadly.

So... what’s the collective verdict?
BIOS 1.3.2 or 1.5.0?
The differences are 1.3.2 mentions “enhanced performance of the system” and 1.5.0 seems to just fix a couple of bugs and update “Intel Microcode and Management Engine”.
I have anecdotal experience where I felt my 2080+9900 performed better on BFV closer to when I had purchased it vs today. I don’t know if BIOS had to do with it.
I really felt like I was flying on the 1.3.0 + 200W combo, but again, I *feel* like my 51M is performing less on 1.5.0 + 200W.
Anyone tested both and come away with more hard evidence?
Thanks all!
EDIT: Since purchase, I’m running my unit with Fujipoly Ultra Extreme pads + Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. -

Correct me if i'm wrong but i believe there is no 9700 non K. I know dell had this listed on their site as a fault. I ordered mine to and it said 9700, but in the order mail i got it was the 9700K.

intel has have 9700 version without K, but i dont know when in dell perseption 9700 is 9700K, because is have difference 100$ price betwen i7 9700 vs i7 9700k,
are your ordered with RTX 2070 or 2080 ? i want to know, burn issues only happening on 2080 model or all model ? any sugestions ? -
Hi All,
I jave a 51m with 9900k and 2070. I also have an Alienware ultra wide which I have hooked up via displayport. The issue I'm having is the ultrawide is suffering from an odd tearing issue even with G-sync on. Should I be using HDMI? TIA!
