Tbh this whole heatsink issue is silly. Dell should have just put the best one in every single model. The laptop was sold on how easy it was to upgrade components by yourself but if you ordered the base model, your choice in components will always be limited to the lower end, unless you also order a better heatsink to go with it. Unless of course, they're really trying to push the idea of getting your upgrades through Dell, where they'll also switch your heatsink as you move up. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason.
Besides, from a manufacturing cost perspective, even though the heatsink itself might cost a little more (probably still next to nothing though), wouldn't it have been overall cheaper to produce a part rather than several different variations? Considering all the logistics that would have to go into keeping each variation available.

You might wanna save and screenshot that. i have a feeling we’re gonna need it if we’re gonna get a heatsink swap

Calling it an "8 pipe" heatsink is being ironic, right? Since there's only 7 and the difference with the "7 pipe" is that one heatpipe is longer and extends over to the CPU side's radiator so it has that shared heatpipe as well as its 3 dedicated ones
-
What is better than Azor's own words about the 8 fat heatpipes. But it seems he have only seen the underside of the 8 7 pipes heatsink. Look at 4.44 min. Maybe he and his engineeers forgot to count the pipes on the top of HS when he they had the chance?
Smart move hang it on the wall with the underside out for the press!

I’ve been at work all day, and I see a lot of smoke... but nobody, yet, has actually received a unit and given photo evidence of receiving the CES pipes, correct?

Hello Everyone. I just received a reply back from Mr. Azor about the heat sink issue.
This is what he said:
![[IMG]](images/storyImages/JTu0ylKD_200x200.jpg)
We haven't confirmed or denied what heatsinks are supposed to be shipping per GPU config

We are investigating but you don't necessarily have the wrong heatsink. Enjoy your system and if you have thermal issues lmk. We will confirm heatsink configurations soon

@Papusan. I did as you suggested and sent a reply back to Mr Azor with the video from your post

What an interesting saga!
Has there been any reports of screen quality issues? Back light bleed, color problems, etc? I'm currently working with a Lenovo Legion Y740 with 2080MQ, and the back light bleed is pretty severe. Other than that it is a great machine for a low price. My Area-51m arrives Monday, so I'll be doing a comparison between the big budget behemoth and the mid range.raz8020 and XxAcidSnowxX like this. -
@gthirst I have no issues with my screen. Zero back light bleed and nice colors. It's one of the best 1080 panels i have ever seen.

Frank Azor himself said the heatsink will only be different if you ordered a 2060 later. I'm gonna be pissed if I get a less than the best heatsink just because I didn't order the 9900k
-
Where can I see that? Got link?
This all is quite shady. -

This is nothing new. In the M18x days, only the machines equipped with XM class CPUs from the factory got the triple pipe heatsink vs single pipessj92 likes this.

So after many problems with UPS i decided i'd just go pick it up myself
Here it is
absolutely loving it ! Temps are good overlocks like a beast 5.0 stable -
Mine has a delivery estimate of Tuesday however it was only about 11 hours away as of 2 hours ago. I know of course that fedex never seems to deliver anything early so i'll still probably be waiting until tuesday...

^This guy thermals.
The heatsink being shipped in everyone's configuration is the better heatsink under the following conditions:
CPUheat > GPUheat.
Looking at the scores/temps being posted, this appears to be the case. If the heat loads were balanced, the CES heatsink would be better.
If
GPUheat > CPUheat,
then the heatsink would want to be inverted (#4 not connecting to the GPU side and #6 being connected to the CPU side) from what is being shipped.Last edited: Feb 23, 2019ThatOldGuy likes this. -
Did you ask them to hold it? I've tried this in the past with Dell and UPS says they are not aloud to do this because Dell tells them they can't?
-
I am going to try my hand at undervolting this weekend using xtu. Curious for those that are doing their OCing, are you using the AW command center or something else? I am just messing with UV this weekend but may mess with OC some other time. 9700k. Curious to see how cool I can get this puppy running when gaming.

When he mentioned priced " $1949 " at the end of the video, I am assuming that will be the price of the unreleased RTX 2060 model? -
Looks making bro, love the color, I prefer it over the white version, I’m glad I went with the this option too

I can't seem to get Thunderbolt Control Center to install after doing a fresh windows install. Anyone running into this? The app is attempting to download from the Windows Store and won't start. The driver on Dells site is just a program that opens up the Windows Store page for it.
-
I have run into this problem with 4 different apps from the Windows Store for my MSi GE73. They will all get to about 80% downloaded and then error out.
Intel Graphics app
Realtek Audio app
The new nVidia control panel app
The synaptics app (so glad MSi is going to Windows precision drivers for all their touchpads finally) -
Bro this is not MSI thread. Please realocate this post.

Does this laptop have vapor chamber?

I know exactly what thread this is. I have an Area 51M on order. I was just letting him know that his problem is not Alienware specific. I believe it is on MS and Windows end with these UWP apps.

temps from a 2.5ish hour gaming session last night. Anthem on full ultra settings pushing a 1440 ultra wide with everything bone stock and fan set to balanced. I may need to undervolt. 9700k and 2080

I would definitely undervolt the CPU. First thing I plan on doing with mine after swapping out the NVME drives and the SSHD.
-
I can’t get the undervolt to hold using xtu. Every reboot it throws an error saying the volt didn’t apply. Not sure what’s going on. I’ll try tomorrow when I’m awake lol.
-
What was average framerates on ULTRA? did You play on OC profile?
-
How are noise levels when gaming?
-
As far as I know You can undervolt CPU and GPU in Alienware Command Center. Save profile and it will hold undervolt settings.HookemAZ likes this.

Anyone know how i could still open up this screw from the backplate ? why did they tighten up the screws so hard pff..

Can you post a link to where he wrote these?
Which BIOS are you on and which CPU? -
Now about heat sink.
How could be the other heat sink option there is not choice on AW/DELL web site. More than this - i checked my service tag and i don't see any heat sink part number or any name at all. So for me looks very simple . There is only one version of heat sink so far like there is only one Motherboard for example.
Plus they assure us that upgrading our hardware with better CPU or GPU it will require just to change this specific thing and nothing else. -
Has anyone been able to get BF:V and Anthem from nVidia? They're offering them free with a RTX 2080 purchase and includes laptops but idk if we're eligible.

When I was ordering there was COD Black Out with 9900k CPU after a while they change to Division 2 with Tobii eye tracker and i think to get this game we need to registered Tobii first.
-
We do not get Anthem or BF:V. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/campaigns/battlefield-v-anthem-bundle/
Dell/Alienware is not listed as participating. To get the games, you would need to have a code included in the order.
It sucks, but not a huge deal. Origin Premier is $15 a month and well worth it IMO if you want to try the games out. -
Very respectable. Balanced keeps things fairly under control without sounding like an air plane. Granted, my temps got a little warmer than I’d like at times so I need to also consider that. I don’t have a decibel meter but overall it’s pretty quiet.
Thanks. I’ll check later today to see if that works. Appreciate the suggestion.
9700k and the latest bios available. When I reinstalled windows I updated from Dells site.
You also asked about frames and oc profiles. This I can’t answer. I wasn’t testing or anything. I was just playing with friends and only monitoring for heat. It ran the game beautifully though. I was over clocked either. Just stock settings using the balanced profile in the command center fan area.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 23, 2019Siepacz likes this. -

Bummer that screw looks pretty stripped. When I worked in a computer repair shop I used to bring a stripped screw extractor with me to work. If you can't get it out with the proper sized screwdriver you could look into getting one from sears/homedepot or calling an electronics repair shop to see if they could remove it for you.
I always recommend the right sized quality screwdriver, it makes all the difference when working on these things. I like Wera drivers, but there are lots of good ones out there.IXVIXXII likes this. -
I completely agree. Using the correct sized bit is very important and I can't count how many times I had to use an extractor kit to rescue screws that were tightened too much / stripped.custom90gt and Siepacz like this.

Yes I agree. I mean there comes a point where the benefit of the doubt becomes exhausted. No one is perfect, but after repeated repetition of misinformation, then it becomes a little over the edge.
I understand all the frustration among the folks that actually have owned or own the new system and the complaints are very valid, however, it's important to keep in mind that it's very easy to point 100% of the finger at the only company outside of Clevo/ODM that is offering a fully modular system.
As obvious as it is where the finger can't be pointed at anyone else (company) because they are not offering a modular system, the point here is that I think the expectations among some folks are unrealistic in the sense that they expect a PERFECT system the first time around....
Ex. Cars... when there's that highly anticipated car that finally releases, even in the auto world, everyone fully understands that the first batches will have some issues and the reality is that most do wait it out a bit before they commit to purchasing that car. Facts.
Now with the Area 51M, where I stand with it is that it is fantastic that a mainstream company like AW/Dell finally make it a reality to release such a product that many of us have wanted for so long... --
They (AW/Dell) have initiated the march for other others to follow...
So in that regard give AW/Dell some darn credit folks.
You don't have to like the Area 51M, but recognize and appreciate that you even have the ability to complain about something that is in reality a very good thing that even exists, because of AW/Dell having paved the way.......¿Comprende?
Now to be fair, I think it is realistic to NOT expect it to be great right from the get go, nor is it REALISTIC to expect it to perform like a full Desktop right out of the gate on its first attempt. (That is unrealistic and for all the whiners here who've spent hundreds of hours trolling to expect that is being very unrealistic.)
Does this mean that we shouldn't expect a great working product out of the box from an established company like AW/Dell? No... but you have to understand that nothing is perfect, there is no perfect system that works as intended out of the box, and no other company in this sector, outside of Clevo/ODM's, have fully modular systems on their road map, therefore, to have AW/Dell surprise us with bringing back a modular system is a treat and we should be thankful for that.
As I've mentioned in several posts back, the Area 51M is a cross over, not a 100% Desktop replacement. -
On that note even a Clevo is NOT a 100% Desktop replacement, so for the whiners, check yourself .... if you think you are hot stuff and think your clevo is hot stuff, go check yourself with the reality on hwbot and hopefully that'll deflate your false fantasy of your expectations ... where in realty a true desktop would CRUSH your dreams in a heart beat.
I never worry or reserve myself for speaking the truth as I know that people appreciate a no nonsense approach to shedding the light on the reality of things over sugar coating the facts.
For that..kudos to the level headed folks. It's very apparent that those with a level head will see right past the trolling vs facts....cheers to the love of the sport.... over and out.Last edited: Feb 23, 2019 -

Its just about few facts.
They announce this as a desktop replacement and the most powerful laptop ever.
And thats why people got right to be unhappy.

Does anyone have any experience undervolting via AWCC? Xtu just won't stick when I use it. I can try throttlestop too, though I am very green at this stuff so any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.
-
I did undervolting yesterday with AWCC.
I AWCC advance settings You have to go down with core in mV. Simply 50mV = 0.05V
I think for Xtu to keep this changes at all time You need to change option in BIOS.
