Any owner of a A51m whos notebook has no coil whine? On my unit i can hear it from the power plug area. But only if the fans are switched off and its very silent. I can live with it but want to know how are the chances to get an mobo without whine if i replace it.
-
When i startup Xtu and slide all my cores to 50 x i have to reboot and then i get this message,
anyone know what is wrong ?
-
Wow they literally overnight delivered the heatsink...probably cost them more for shipping than producing 10 of these LOL
Sent them my shipping info 11:12am
Product shipped 4:30pm
Looks like they're sending heatsink and something else, QTY: 4 maybe screws?
You need to be very careful and make sure only the multipliers are changed. If anything else changes it asks for restart. -

Well.. now I feel stupid. Does the system automatically adjust voltage to accommodate 5Ghz?
Obviously just setting 50x on all cores would more so be for a baseline right? As you would want to adjust the voltage and such for stability and longevity. Or at least that's my understanding, I'm not too familiar with overclocking. -
Got the same. If I were to guess, I'd say the chances to get a unit without any coil whine at all are slim to none. Dell seem to have coil whine with many different models, not just AW (XPS 13 comes to mind).
-
for me that is a problem to escalate to Dell over Twitter and co... not this 2 powerbrick Bs...

No coil wine arround the power plug area for me.
When the fan switched off, i can just heard something arround ssd area, something like disk drive sound. I will replace the ssd soon.
@captn.ko when you said that you have not lightbleed, i have a question. I received my unit yesterday, no apparent lightbleed, but when i start to put it in the dark room with 100% brighnest (really too bright for common use) i can see maybe 2 or 3 litlle spot, and it desapear at 80% brightness. Do you notice something like that, or really no lighbleed even if 100% bright? -
realy no bleed. 100% Brightness, dimmed rommlights. My Good RTX and the perfect panel are the reasons i dont call Dell to replace my Notebook due to coilwhine... Maybe i let them chnage the mobo
the white squares are from the EIZO Displaytest and cant be disabled. But for me its good enough to see bleed.Last edited: Mar 14, 2019 -
I'm not sure if the slight noise I hear comes exactly from the power area or the SSD, but there is something.
On a ultrabook I wouldn't accept it, but I tried changing so many UB's with coil whine, that I finally gave up and got a completely different brand instead that does not seem to have any whine.
For this gaming rig, while not quite ok with CW, it doesn't bother me as I never hear it under gaming, with or without headphones. -
ok so I'm still having issues with terrible FPS in Anthem so I decided to load up GPUz and watch the sensors. Based on what I am seeing, the game, Anthem does not seem to be using the RTX 2080 up to it's potential. The core clock hovers around 500-700 MHz.
I tested Destiny and the clocks immediately hit 1500+ as soon as I launch the game.

Guys I recived my laptop and tested it out. Seems really nice and all.
My issue.... I think I got coil wine, first I thought it was my gpu, but I think it has something to do with my ac adapter where its plugged in.
I got a pretty decent screen also and fear to return this laptop. But the coilwine I hear all the time. High pitched sound.
What are the solutions!? Please guys help. So sad, I want to have this model of laptop.
Also the coilwine seem to be worse on certain websites with different colors and a lot of picture. Like amazon and other stores. So coilwine seem to depend on what I watch on laptop.
I recorded the sound with video. Anywere I can upload so I can show you guys and hear your opinion?severous likes this. -
Then tweet Frank Azor about it or do you need your hand held like everything else in this thread and need someone to go do it for you or show you how to do it?
He listened to me when I gave him numbers on the GPU clock speed issue with just using the 330W power supply and said that they could try to optimize it better.
Also, why are you so hung up on the power brick issue? From the get go you have been, "They said it needs two power supplies. then y'all use two power supplies!!!", constantly arguing with people about it when it first came up.Last edited: Mar 14, 2019 -

It conflicts and confuses with Alienware CC Overclock Tools. You need to completely uninstall OC Tools and XTU. Then reinstall XTU for it to properly workHookemAZ likes this. -

Cool whine is self fixable if you can find and isolate the offending part. Then cover the part in hot glue gun. Requires testing the system while opened up, which is dangerous. Or if you have an excellent ear and instincts.
Or sometimes, but rarely, can you fix by stressing the system for hours with OCCT. -
marketing blabla until he let his words follow an solution.

Cool whine is present in all electronics. It becomes audible when vibrations hit a certain point. This cannot be controlled in manufacturing. And Dell is not going to stress test every system of the line and isolate the offending resistor.Kormi likes this. -
sure they can prevent it... but it would cost a few cents more
you get the point...

I finally bit the bullet and ordered one (don't feel like waiting for QHD panels and new processors from intel/amd to come). I hope I don't regret this decision. It will be my first Dell/Alienware laptop.
My original order was past week through Dell website with these specs:
i9 9900K: I hope I'm able to cool it down with some UV and I don't have to end up disabling HT in BIOS...
RTX 2080
8 GB RAM (2x4): planning to upgrade to 32 or maybe 64 GB on my own
256 SSD SATA: planning to upgrade to 2x512GB 970 EVO plus on my own
Dark side of the moon
Vindicator 2.0 sleeve: I hope that it fits inside
ETA: 26/March
SAVE12 for 12% discount, as apparently it's the only one available in EU right now
Reading in the forum that the SSD M.2 heatsinks are not included in that configuration I tried to put in contact with Dell just in an attempt to order 2 of them, but I had to luck. To my surprise, they don't offer chat service in the website from my country (ES), and the contact phone is a premium number (elevated cost for calls) with a crappy IVR that you can barely understand. I kept 15 minutes on the phone waiting for an agent to attend my call and finally I desisted. It sucks that they offer so crappy sales support for consumers in my country. If the sales service is like that I don't want to imagine how the support services are (for which we pay a lot of money with the order).
Anyway, realizing that they changed the available configurations in the website after my order was set, removing the models with the lower SSD and RAM specs and lowering prices for these components in the upper models, I decided to cancel my former order and reorder again with the following specs for just 200 € more:
i9 9900K
RTX 2080
32 GB RAM (2x16): maybe I will buy another 2x16 later for upgrading to 64GB or leave it as it is.
1TB M.2 NVMe (2x500) RAID0: Maybe the factory units are crap and I will have to replace them with the 970 EVOs, but at least they will come with the SSD heatsinks (hopefully)
Moon Light: Yup, I changed my mind and went for this color
Vindicator 2.0 sleeve
ETA: 03/April
SAVE12 for 12% discount, sadly no SAVE17 available from here
So I will have to wait a very looong time until it arrives.
Question for the guys that ordered it with the NVMe's from Dell: How are those units compared to the Samsung 970 EVO Plus? Would it be worth upgrading to the later ones?
@theurden, you ordered on 20th of February and you are still waiting for it? When is your delivery date estimated for?
Also, from your experience from previous Alienware's, how is the support service in our country?
ThanksLast edited: Mar 14, 2019 -
Have a little bit of faith, but if they can't or won't fix it, so what, you were right and we will always be stuck having to use 2 power supplies for any sort of decent gaming. Hurray for you!!!
They have already given us something no one asked for and is great; not only did they bump up the TDP of the 2080 to 200W (which we all knew was coming), they increased PL1 on the CPU to 210W. They are working to make the system better whether you want to see it or not. -
so much salt...
i havent attacked you... so calm down, get a beer and chill
-
I can try stress test it and see if the electronics get in line.
The issue is its even louder now. I hear it clearly from 1 meter away.
It starts and wines up then stops and silent then start over again, and continues like that.
Which programs you recommend to use to stress test? -
same here, but only if i sit in front of my notebook in a deadly silent room...Kormi likes this.
-
Coil whine can be worse after some time. Rather that than it will be less.
Run different stress test. -
Is it same sound that repeats itself or different?
Do you hear the coilwine when fans running and lets say laptop speakers on 20%?
I still clearly hear the coilwine with 20% speakers. -
same sort of sound you describe
defintaley not. I can only hear it from 1m distance IF the CPU is at max clock, the room is deadly silent, the fans are off and no speaker sound. When iam in idle mode i use energy saver profile (cpu <3ghz) and i cant hear it any more. So i can live with it. But if all the guys here say that they have no coil whine i would replace the board...Kormi likes this. -
No salt, just can't fathom the fact that you are wholeheartedly against having something added feature set wise that would make a lot of people's lives a lot easier.
Unfortunately I am in Afghanistan....no beer
. Would make it easier to deal with all the idiots I have to deal with on a daily basis here (where I am not the forum).
-
My biggest fear is, I get new laptop and its scratch, dead pixels, screen bleeding etc.
Now I got a laptop no dead pixel and laptop was clean and no issues and no real screen bleed. Just a little light which I can live with.
But this coilwine I doubt I will be able live with....
1: I will try stresstest when I get some program advice to use
2: might ask if can replace the motherboard only.
3. Maybe return, and if not return, I try glue it as mentioned earlier. -
Same here, but your whine seems to be louder. I would def. Ask for mobo replacement!Kormi likes this.
-
Hopefully you can get it fixed with the least amount of stress put on you as possible!! Would suck getting a good system other than that and have to return the whole laptop.Kormi likes this.

So I've noticed a line item on the order status page that says, "Your custom-built item is complete." Don't think I saw that until this morning. My status is still in the "Confirmed" state and estimated arrival still says 3/15-3/20 and the packing slip says ship date 3/17. Curious if any of you other guys who are waiting status has updated? -
But how many chokes are there present on this motherboard? On the AW17R5 I think it is about 16 ? Would you be able to run it with the cover open and then see if you can touch/probe and stop the offending part from buzzing/whining? Unless it is *inside* the component in which case you'd not be able to fix it...c69k, Kormi and ThatOldGuy like this.

So i tested the Vbios this morning and it looks like my RTX 2080 is still locked @ +175, +176 will crash.
Will try some OC tonight and see if the 200w make any difference or if it's pure marketing. -

That sucks!!! Going to be tough when I get my laptop in. I work 10 hrs/day, 7 days a week. Luckily I will be headed to the states on R&R not too long after it arrives and will have 18 days to fiddle with it and get it pushed to the edge.
-
Hopefully you can get it higher. Could just be a not so greatly binned chip, too, although you could already push yours higher than ssj92 was able to achieve with his 2080. This waiting game sucks!!! I want to play, too....
-
Here is the 8700 tested in furmark with an undervolt for 10 minutes (solid temps)-
Also Dave's Corner has numerous videos with the 8700/rtx 2070 combo that feature the 8700 temps - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBuF1zZbskkFtWIlcsqjjtQ/videos
Best video i found on undervolting was by Bob Of All Trades. It was for the i7 8750h, but what you learn from there should be able to be applied to your 9700k as wellLast edited: Mar 14, 2019Adam181, Fire Tiger and Kormi like this. -
The 200w vBios will only help if you are power limited. If your GPU core is on its limit then the higher PL wont help you to clock higher.Last edited: Mar 14, 2019raz8020, Papusan, Johnksss and 1 other person like this.

Thanks for further info!
Also, what outside the ship can make sound, there are no moving parts. ( I will google further into it)
This so called chokes, do they get hot? I mean, if I find the culprit chip, can I cover it with soundproofing, it should take away minimum 50% of the sound, but only if it don't get hot. I don't want fry a chip.
Thanks, I did not know OCCT was a program, downloaded it and started the test.
Will download the others also.
Yeah, changed to max fan and no OC in Alienwere control center. Still it hits 100 degrees..... After 25 minutes the CPU was 100 degress of OCCT Big data package setting. (On core 2-5 100C and rest 95C) There is like 6-10C difference between cores. -
I am so glad I ordered my area-51m when I did. Dell has a new sale code up "SAVE17" that works for it, but now the prices have gone up and there are fewer options for someone like me who wants to do their own upgrades. No more 8GB ram option and no single 1TB drive option, not even a single 512GB SSD option.

I also see "Your custom-built item is complete" in my order status page. I ordered it on 03/08 and my delivery window is 03/14 - 03/19. I also have same ship date 03/17MvPeteson28 and chewbakaats58 like this.
-
Whenever you see this, go to actions on your order page and view your packing slip. It should show a ship date there. That is the date it will most likely leave their facility and head to you.
Mine is set to ship 3/17 as well and I ordered it last week

btw, you should only see that "Your custom-built item is complete" (or whatever message they change it to), while you are logged in. If you just check your order by order number while logged out, it won't show that message.

This is probably the best i can do.
I did uninstall Alienware command center and installed xtu put everything on 51 x.. gpu wise i first tried msi afterburner but that program is a total disaster when i slide clocks to 150/150 it gives me a instant crash and got a weird color screen then follows with a reboot.
Tried Nvidia inspector and that seems to work better then afterburner but still i cannot push my gpu score to 28k+
Could undervolting the gpu give me higher score ?
Thoughts are welcome -
Do they. 100C+ on the AW17R5. I would not touch with my fingers.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 14, 2019

Have you messed with the voltage curve of the GPU at all? Also, did you try the OC Scanner in MSi Afterburner.
https://www.msi.com/blog/get-a-free-performance-boost-with-afterburner-oc-scanner
It might be able to help you out. Follow the instructions in the blog post above. It is really easy. -
@doofus99
May want to word that differently. I got threatened with a ban for using the 3 letter 'A' word a few pages back and it wasn't used in a derogatory sense against anyone, either.
Also got in trouble a while back for using the 'S' word spelled with an '!' instead of the 'i' -
Thanks mate will try !!
