It should do yeah. They have a whitelist of serial numbers which are allowed to run at 3200mhz and their own kits are obviously in that list. I wouldn't recommend it though you'll get similar results from the lower CL 2933 sticks you linked. Dells 3200 are slow.

Yeah i know . The performance of 2933cl17 and 3200 cl20 should be identical. Just wanted to know If its possible to unlock xmp with the right RAM even when the laptop is ordered with 2933 RAM :)

It's possible that CL and frequency do not tell the whole story. Someone posted these 2933 vs 3200 mem bench results a while back and the 3200 managed to get ahead a bit, despite the higher CL, probably due to the effect of burst mode if I had to guess.

I've been reading through the thread but have two questions where I am curious if the answer has changed over time:

Is the current understanding of the RAM speed (2933 vs 3200) issue that there are not multiple motherboard versions, but rather that the bios is configured to recognize 3200 speeds only for certain approved RAM modules (Dell's of course)? So if one buys a new R2 with 2933 RAM, there's nothing that would prevent it running at 3200 with the 'correct' modules?

What's the verdict on the 300hz vs 360hz panels? I know the 360hz has a slower response time (5ms vs 3ms) and G-Sync, but aside from that is one or the other generally regarded as more desirable? Earlier in this thread someone mentioned a difference in contrast ratio between the two, but according to the Dell product spec PDFs from the support site they are both 700:1.

for the motherboard it's a simple thing to check, you just need a tester that has ram xmp dell oem + ram xmp no dell! all he has to do is install the no dell xmp ram then reset the bios (disconnect the cmos battery and the battery) then restart the pc with the no xmp dell ram! if the ram no xmp dell does not work under 3200 its simply means that the serial number of the ram dell oem is registered in the bios

    I agree!

I probably poorly worded my initial question .... I meant has anyone tried this? We have a community of tinkerers and the R2 has been out a while now so I was curious if anyone had gotten around to testing it to be certain. Earlier in the thread there is a lot of speculation as to whether Dell has different motherboards for different RAM speeds (which makes little sense logistically and in terms of cost at scale...).

some page back someone had ordered ram xmp from dell and upgraded with it and it had worked for him! now the real question is whether the serial numbers are integrated into the bios or is it an option that they unlock online depending on our purchase of ram from them!

I am interested in the Area 51m but a bit put off to the speakers. Previously I remember the alienware comes with Klispch audio but over the years, Dell has stopped it.

I understand some would say use headphones/headsets but I usually prefer to play loudspeakers and having good external speaker is a must. Any suggestions is appreciated with similar 17 inch laptops

hey, can someone with either a 10700kf or 10900kf comment on how the R2 behaves? i.e can you see the overclocking options in the BIOS to select either the pre-defined overclock profiles or manually set clocks/volts? (just like you would on the 'k' versions) and also how does AWCC behave? does everything 'just work' like you would expect when using a 'k' when using a 'kf'?

[IMG]a clean installation of windows is however necessary after replacing the screen, also provide adhesive tape, the cable for the screen is exactly the same no modification is necessary! according to panelook it's freesync and gsync compatible but it doesn't work on mine, maybe nvidia doesn't activate it yet, maybe a next update! I had made an order on lcdfavor but the next day he sent me an email to tell me that the screen was out of stock then he took the opportunity to increase the price! mine I took it from alibaba.com but I don't believe it still has any in stock

I bought it on alibaba.com with a seller he only had one left in stock, but maybe he has restocked in the meantime! on aliexpress also there are some but it sells it very expensive! I think if you do a push search on google I think you will be able to find some with a favorable price

So I bought one of these re-certified (10700, 2070s, 16gb, 512ssd) and have been pretty impressed by it. The fans are very quiet which was my biggest concern with any laptop purchase (also the reason I didn't go for the M17 R3/R4 or X17). The only thing I haven't quite liked so far is that, when I opened it out of the box, there were big issues with the default Dell image (which is what I'm assuming Best Buy loads on their behalf). 2 out of the 3 games I tried to run wouldn't even start up.

I formatted and went with a minimal image, tested everything and all was good... a little bit of coil whine on high FPS but inaudible with even low speaker settings. Then decided to load up Dell's stuff (AW Command Center, OC Controls) and everything is working as expected now. Really makes me wonder who puts together these images for Dell.

Anyway, I'm debating buying a 3-5yr extended warranty through Dell due to some of the stories in this thread. Since I just got this not even a week ago, I'm wondering if they'll give me prices that I could get when checking out through Dell outlet... a 5yr warranty is only $450 which seems like a reasonable price to me. Anyone have experience with this? I would have done it with BB but they don't offer Dell warranties when checking out, and their in-house one didn't look that good.

    EDIT:
Also does anyone have recommendations for a backpack that will fit this thing and can still be used as carry-on for a flight? That 40L one won't cut it I don't think ... :)

Driver question here: would it be fruitful to independently upgrade the drivers for the integrated Intel Graphics? Independently meaning that Dell hasn't put out any updates themselves(currently on driver 27.20.100.8935 and Intel's latest is 27.20.100.9466). Would updating create any issues per say?

I don't think there will be much benefit or harm. There's no MUX, the 51M R2 relies on the dGPU.

Thanks for the advice from you both.

I actually wondered about this. I recently connect 2 monitors to my 51M through thunderbolt and HDMI and noticed that the thunderbolt connection was driven by the iGPU. Learnt subsequently that this connection through USB C is only driven by the iGPU for majority of laptops. There seem to be ways around this but I don't think these would force the dGPU to take over on thunderbolt.

I should have been more clear. This will disable display output from your thunderbolt port. The iGPU is hard wired to the thunderbolt port and this cannot be changed.

Bro @Normimb What credibility level is this? At what price are you willing sell your soul?

The editor Richard Devine at Windows Central should get fired. Been in the game the last 10 years and still put out this BS below without even search the facts.
    upload_2021-7-8_4-38-49.png

The Area 51 is Alienware's mad desktop PC that's known for wild styling and quite insane performance. So then, the Area 51m R2 is a smaller, portable version of this madness, right? Absolutely!

What's even more amazing is that this laptop is upgradeable in the future. And not just the storage or RAM. Both the CPU and GPU can be upgraded. That's pretty much unheard of in a laptop. It's big, heavy, and wildly expensive, but it's also a machine you could easily keep for many, many years.

Just a quick update from before - I may have actually stumbled on a fix for coil whine! Mine stopped after unchecking the "C1E" box on Throttlestop. Though that was the last step in a bunch of tweaks so I'm not sure if it will work for you.

Other tweaks that may or may not contribute:
    Speed Shift in bios: on
Speedstep in bios: on/off didn't matter
    regedit -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm -> start: changed from 3 to 4
hardware accelerated gpu scheduling: on/off didn't matter
nvidia control panel: all default except power management mode-> from power saving to adaptive
After all this, cpu temps were going higher during casual use (toward 80C) but after -160 undervolt it stays around 57C

Well that's it for now, I don't really wanna keep testing more tweaks in case the "magic combination" breaks :) Hope this can help others looking for some peace and quiet :)

Which screen do you have? Although the coil whine on mine has not been bad, it only happens at really high FPS. I cap my FPS at 165hz (I have a 300hz screen) and it never happens... but I don't play really demanding titles either. Probably happens at lower FPS on newer games.

Intel XTU and Alienware Area 51m R2. I Am wondering if the original Area 51m R2 is more locked down more than the later version? My intel i9 10900k Alienware area 51m won't allow Intel XTU to function or change anything at all. But the newer Alienware Area 51mR2 allows it to change stuff? Did they change something or is my main system having an issue?

XTU should work on both. AWCC uses a XTU dll to overclock so it can interfere.
