Hello everyone, could someone please share GPU temperatures of the RTX3080 when the notebook is in "performance" profile and standing flat on the table (No OC)?

In Read Dead Redemption 2 my RTX 3080 pulls 160W+ and stays at 1650Mhz. Temperatures are 80-82°C. If I raise the back of the laptop the GPU is about 74°C. This is a very huge difference in temperatures. Can someone confirm?

I have to add that I have repasted GPU and CPU with LM.

With full FAN speed my GPU is 70°C.

I hope to get around to testing Gear 1 on the stock 3466 kit soon on the x17.

Regarding that 5% gain from the article, I've showed something similar in the R6 using a slightly slower RAM with tighter timings performing a tad bit better than the faster RAM with looser timings. However, that was in the R6 with better XMP at 3200.

In the case with my 3200/CL16 Ballistix Kit vs the stock Kingston 3466/CL22 Kit, the stock Kingston 3466/CL22 kit performs better across the board.

Pretty normal to see temps fall after raising the back. A good cooler would help bring temps further down.

You tested in Gear 2: we already know that lower latency modules are useless in that mode...

@bsch3r already tested Dell 3466 vs Ballistix 3200 in Gear 1 and concluded that the Ballistix was superior as expected. I don't rmemeber there being much details on the other modules' performance though, so looking forward to your experiment results.

Can you post AIDA64 memory benchmark results achieved by your m17 R4's soldered RAM?

my ears are burning! What did I miss?
Btw, I buy all the laptops I review, I am not sponsored and do not receive review units. If I see a problem I call them out on it, I have videos calling dell out on missing m15r5 ssd adapters as well as using high density ram in flagship products. I do try and be active on these forums but I am so busy at the moment

Not missed much tbh. Some people here were accusing you of being sponsored because their views didn’t align with yours in your review of the X17 (Even though it’s pretty obvious you’re not sponsored).

Was just saying that instead of them throwing accusations around why don’t they ask you directly. (Although it doesn’t matter now as you’ve cleared it up already haha)

Interesting, are you able to sustain 5.0ghz all core or on several cores without thermal throttling or power throttling? What's your undervolt?

Just want to compare to the L7i.

Good luck with the RU.EFI hack. Let us know if it worked. I'm tempted to check if it would do anything for my m15 R1 lol.

As it stands, even though I hate soldered RAM, the m17 R4 latency is excellent, about the same as on the 51M R2, 33% lower than stock x17, and 20% lower than hacked x17....

Poor latency, and sequential I/O is worse than Kingston 3466.

Pretty much the same sequential read and copy, even worse latency, but phenomenal write speed - weird. Is the write speed reproducible?

The write score is flawed. Remember the Aida64 software is in beta.

Have switched back to g.skill because in TimeSpy I get 1100 more points in CPU score. Cinebench is equal nevertheless what RAM is inserted.

I do not understand this whole RAM thing in the x17

Just adding what I noted. I am have about 5% of everyone here's knowledge of ram in laptops, so sorry for basic results. Bought this when I got my X17 and then was too busy testing the x17 against a 7i for 3 weeks to get around testing this. When I finally did test it, It was literally on the last day I could return to amazon and was too tired to run too many tests. From what I saw, it was consistently 1 to 2% slower on CB23 scores than the 32g 3466 I had. I didnt fiddle with any settings like going to gear 1. I did try and turn on xmp for fun and nothing happened.

Ended up returning as I already sunk the 3466 upgrade costs in. Maybe when gear 1 is a better option with an update from AW??

Of course I tested in Gear 2 lol I didn't specify anything about testing in Gear 1. :)

Can you link me to that test? I don't know how else to tell you but in stock form the Kingston 3466/CL22 outperforms my Ballistix 3200/CL16, so in reality the Ballistix are not really superior. In this case it would be considered inferior.

Should I repeat that last paragraph in reverse? jk jk.

The bottom line is... test your kits and use whatever is faster LOL.

If my Ballistix 3200/CL16 kit was faster, then I would be using it.

I've ran out of options on trying to get my point across. :D

Thanks for sharing. Those timings look pretty much on par to my m15 R4:

Speaking of memory Dell is finally selling the 32 gig 3466 ram so if anyone want's to put 64gigs of the Kingston memory then go for it. Of course they want an arm, leg, or your first born child metaphorically speaking. Expensive is an unjust articulation. And most people buying them in pairs with tax were talking just under a grand. And on a side note I have finally gotten my reward point situation fixed after only 2 weeks which gave me $152 but Dell has practically nothing in stock. My points expire in December and what's the point of having those points if your walking into the grocery store looking for toilet paper the day before the shutdowns for the you know who flu. Again, Metaphorically speaking.

So far these are my best results for my Kingston 3466 although I'm not really doing much testing anymore because My X17 does everything I need it to do for the most part. I'm still not digging the killer Wi-Fi. To finicky for my blood. Prefer the good old Intel drivers like the ones that were running my Intel AX200 in my Latitude 7480. Never a hiccup on that NIC. And yes, I have completely removed the killer control software which is nothing more than a nuisance. Since I migrated to the X17 I turned my Latitude 7480 into a high-powered Chromebook then gave it to my son so he doesn't need to sign them out at his school anymore. Talk about easy. It took me less than 10 minutes to download and install the Chrome OS on that Latitude. No driver issues or complications whatsoever. Wish Windows was that easy. That Latitude 7480 has a core i7 CPU and 1 TB Samsung 960 pro so you know it's running blazing fast for that OS.

When buying a system, it can be a good time to just opt for the desired RAM or SSD that they need as it'd end up cheaper with the discounts, cashbacks, cc rewards etc..applied. Ex. I got the 4TBx2 (2TB m.2's) with my config and although those are +700 or so, factor in the discounts, cb's etc... each 2TB stick (which are Samsung 980 Pro's*) end up being way cheaper than buying it afterwards on a retail site.

The 64GB of RAM for +200 on the X17 isn't too bad either considering what I mentioned above. This is assuming the 64GB kit is indeed the Dual Rank Kingston's, which I think may only come in the top spec config, because the 64GB kit in the non 4K config from what I saw isn't the Kingston kits.

Also, maybe when BF roles around you'll be able to buy something then, assuming that the dell store will be stocked up before that time rolls round.

I'm not too fond of Killer cards either, never have been, but these new killer variants are essentially rebranded Intel cards. I see that you've already uninstalled the killer control software, which is absolute rubbish. Good call with that. I just installed the bare bone drivers and have had zero issues with my connection. Gaming, streaming, uploading TB's of files, downloading etc... My only concern before getting the X17 was whether the wifi card was going to give me headaches or not. Fortunately, it's working flawlessly and in a way I'm not surprised, because I never had issues using the bare bone driver.

Just to clarify the option at time of purchase for the 3466 ram was in fact the slower Adata and not the Kingston memory which I bought at a great deal lower then what they're charging now. Memory went up since I bought my X17 in July. Also I bought the barebones 256 gig SSD. Buy going that route I got my X17 with the core i9 CPU and RTX 3080 GPU at the price you see below. That was with a coupon code going through Dell finance and a military discount. I personally don't like to finance anything but did so for the discount, then paid the balance off the next month. If you factor in the 2 sticks of Kingston 3466 which cost me $352 and the 2 1TB Samsung 980 pro's for $432 my cost is closer to what Dell is charging for the X17 at present time. So the only real advantage was me choosing instead of Dell what components to use. My total cost for the laptop and components came to $3,977 which is not cheap but still a lot less then the system I built about 4 years ago which all together was a little north of $15,000.

Sorry, a bit short on time, a quick search for @bsch3r s posts on RU.EFI should do it if you are curious. Again, not contesting that K 3466 runs faster for you. Just saying that the situation would be different if you/Dell enabled Gear 1.

Someone awfully cynical might unfairly suggest this is precisely the reason why Gear 2 was forced, but I'm sure it was just an ommision that will soon be rectified via a BIOS update :)

Thinking about getting a dock and since Dell doesn't have any Thunderbolt 4 docs yet I'm looking at these.

    https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Thunde...words=thunderbolt+4+doc&qid=1631993176&sr=8-3

    https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Thunde...ords=thunderbolt+4+docs&qid=1631993220&sr=8-3

    https://www.amazon.com/Kensington-S...3304&sprefix=thunderbolt+4+doc,aps,186&sr=8-4

    https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Echo-..._r=QQ4KQ67PJJNQGYQFC7P1&qid=1631993377&sr=8-6

Any thoughts? All the negative reviews are incompatibility issues with Apple or Razer but I haven't seen anyone post a negative review on an any of them when connected with an 11th gen Dell XPS. Worse case I'll just return it.

    Gracias.

Thanks for the answers. but what I would like to know is the construction material of the palm rest, that is; the keyboard area and the touch panel.

    Thanks.

Hard to tell but it feels like aluminum to me. It doesn't have any flex when typing and the cherry keyboard is the best laptop keyboard I've ever typed on. And they just released a firmware update a couple days ago which says fixes the problem which caused the keyboard to stop responding. Prior to that the solution was to press FN+F1 together which toggled the power increase for the laptop and that solution worked every time I had to do it which wasn't very often. But the touch panel I think is glass because it lights up. According to nanoreview the X17 uses HDR Dolby Vision but only on the 4K display.

So today I did something that I've been doing since before Windows 7 first came out and installed Windows 11 on my X17. I figured the worst that could happen is reformatting and reinstalling Win 10 if things got messed up. But that is not what happened. First the install took about 10 minutes and all the Drivers worked. I guess Microsoft has improved their cooperation with PC vendors. Next was the software test and cleanup. Their was several apps and a few programs that had to be updated but after that was finished everything worked. That also included all my extensions for Chrome and Edge. And after everything was finished their was a surprisingly little amount of cleanup. After Microsoft releases the finished version I'll do like always and do a clean install. At this point I've been messing around with it since noon and I've had no issues pertaining to crashes or slow performance. Their is not much of a learning curve and I had everything mostly figured out within the first hour after installation. The only benchmark I've ran was AIDA and it was nearly the same result as Windows 10. And every program I've ran has been as responsive or even a little more then before which is not what I'd expect from a upgrade Windows installation. Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020 and Microsoft Office professional 2019 were the 2 that really surprised me because neither required any software updates. Adobe is usually the worse about having to reenter serial numbers but I didn't even need to do that. So their you have it. Windows 11 works on the X17 with a simple installation and none of the driver headaches.

Thanks for sharing. I hope to share a success story with Linux Mint soon. It installs just fine, but for some reason I'm having a tough time getting the wifi or ethernet to work. I've tried everything within my Linux knowledge and also have had help from Linux experts, but nothing. -

It's likely the secure boot that's preventing the drivers from working properly. The odd thing is, Linux only boots up (works) if it is installed with secure boot ON. That's the irony as you normally would want secure boot OFF when installing Linux.

If there are any other Linux users here and can chime in with any ideas that would be greatly appreciated.

Which kernel are you running on? I believe Kernel 5.11 brings suppport for the wifi card and ethernet. I don't use linux mint so I don't if things are any different. I am running Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS. Trackpad also only worked when I upgraded my kernel to 5.13.

Thanks. I think I'm on the latest, let me double check.. will report back.

When you installed POP did you have Secure Boot ON? How about the secure boot mode: Deployed or Audit mode?

The issue I'm having is that I can install LinuxMint with Secure Boot ON and OFF, but when I've tried with it OFF, it would not reboot back into Linux. I had to turn Secure Boot ON in order for it to boot.

Very strange I know...as it's usually the other way around.

Have you got a spare 330W power adapter? Or is still looking for one?

It seems Dell don't want to sell you one.... They prefer that you buy it from 3rd party. Not exactly what you should expect after you have crammed +3500$ on the table for their newest gaming laptops.
