I have taken a close look at Gsync vs non and cons down to prefer Gsync at least on Area51m, and if my old tired eyes can see the difference I’m sure others can too, but it still is a matter of personal preference and comes down to what your watching at the time.

    Hi guys & gals!

I've got a few questions and a few requests, especially for people that got the Alienware Area-51m lately (and who presumably don't know anything about overclocking or undervolting. I do not blame them, as there is nothing to blame them for). Obviously, they witnessed and got hit hard by the CPU & GPU thermal problems (and hard GPU thermal throttle).

Thus, I've decided to make a video on how to "effortlessly" avoid it:

I am not sure if it will help anyone here, but I hope it will :)
(I do plan to make another video a bit more in-dept talking about GPU voltage/frequency curves using MSI Afterburner - including tips & tricks of using it and Intel XTU overclocking/undervolting and so on. But as that is on a much more advanced level, I decided not to include it here)

If you have any questions, please do let me know!

    Thank you!
    Cheers!

I love your attitude. You help those that don't know. For those that don't know from days back when, it seemed Alienware came about as a result of a lot of self-builders, who upped the game when it came to squeezing out more value for your $$$ than what you paid for. Alienware popped up as a group that would save you all the hassle of researching the mixing and matching of components that could provide for above spec performance, saving you loads of time and research. Their OOB systems routinely outperformed just about everything else, but these systems typically were built to go beyond too. I love ASUS for this reason as well.

The AGA will not work work with the unit's internal panel, only an external one that could support Gsync. This is confirmed with Dell in their specs.

They were Clevo and white-box re-sellers like all the other Micros. They competed with VooDoo PC, Origin PC, Malibal, and Falcon Northwest in the highest price segment of custom Clevo (and sometimes Compal) notebooks. Their custom lids helped them stand out. Also, they were more willing than others to do some firmware and hardware mods... at a price. Customizations were rather costly.
I am not sure about "Value" in the custom gaming laptop segment was ever a thing.

Maybe in the future (And I don't talk about before we pass 2025). And for small items, a lot smaller than the heatsink we have today. And will Dell swallow the increased cost? https://www.electropages.com/blog/2...oved-boron-arsenide-defect-free-semiconductor

    Edit. See also

Boron arsenide has been proposed as a material for solar cell fabrication,[10][15] although it is not currently used for this purpose.

An ab initio theory has predicted that the thermal conductivity of cubic BAs is remarkably high, over 2,200 W/(m·K) at room temperature, which is comparable to that of diamond and graphite.[16] Subsequent measurements yielded a value of only 190 W/(m·K) due to high density of defects. See... Small defects in quality will put the thermal conductivity down to the half of what copper is able to handle.
So the ultimate fix is downclock Cpu?

    Nice video.
I did re paste today and still getting 100C on CPU. Was thinking I did something wrong but it looks like it's common problem :)
BTW gpu became much lower. I see around 1900 at 75-56C

Apple ii+ with 48Kb memory playing Karateka on a green screen monitor (no color) using floppy disks that stored 140Kb on each one.

    Food for thought/debate on the 51M R2:
If it turns out that the 9700 was a better thermal "fit" for the 51M R1's abilities (maybe or maybe not but that's the supposition for the moment)

Might it actually be wiser for folks to aim for the I7 10700K instead of the 10900K? This is sort of a will the binning of the I9 benefit confined space users better than the 8 cores which should really be plenty for years to come?

I can kind of see it either way but having seen how well the 9700 did even though they were both rated for the same 95W has me wondering if we shouldn't avoid the absolute high end knowing what we learned with the R1.

No, this is not the ultimate fix. This is just a quick fix on how to get the thermals in check right out the box just using the provided Alienware Command Center tool.
The ultimate fix is to put the clocks back to 5.0Ghz on 2 cores down to 4.7GHz on all cores, play more with the undervolting and change the PL1 & PL2 settings to better control the power draw. (Exactly the same way that Clevo did on the P775: PL2 - 118W; PL1 - 95W). Those AVX instruction can really cook the CPU.

I plan to make another video showing this much more in-depth.

    Cheers!

    Hello again :)

I've done the follow-up video in which I talk a bit more in-depth on how to tweak the CPU so you can keep the boost up to 5.0Ghz on first cores and 4.7Ghz on all cores while applying the required undervolts and how you can tweak this a bit further by changing the PL1 & PL2 values, using XTU and Cinebench R15/R20 as the stress bench. Obviously this was done in mind with keeping the CPU far from the 100 Celsius thermal throttle limit:

I did not have a script nor did I rehears anything for this video. I just sat down and talked about it along the way.
I did spot some obvious mistakes in the video (me saying 8 cores instead of 6, which was obvious and constantly talking about Wattage instead of Power - that is measured in Watts).

I am also very sorry about the length of the video. I tried to show as much as possible on how you should approach the situation and for what reason, how to stress test the CPU and what to think of doing next.
For the record, this video shows the absolute WORSE case scenario of load your CPU can sustain. Unless you are doing heavy video editing you will never see these power draws / thermals / lower clocks due to power caps in games or other applications.

Hope this helps! If you have any questions please do let me know!
    Cheers

Yeah I have it undervolted, I'm trying to keep my gpu at the temp I set in awcc, right now it is 83c but when I set the oc profile in awcc I put temp to 80c and it just ignores everything. I hate this. Thermal limit in awcc is 80c but nooo it still wants to spike way past this wtf. [IMG] [IMG]

You need to hit "Test & Save" as a profile. You need to apply the profile.
If that doesn't work, then I would recommend uninstalling and installing Alienware Command Centre and the OC Tools again.

Unless you are urgent, perhaps waiting for the 51M R2 would be good. If you don't like it, you can grab an R1 on clearance.

I saw some thread on reddit saying there alienhead above the keyboard stays the same color. Now that i noticed it i have the same issue. Re-installing does not help, it always stays the same color of light/blueish.

I don't really mind but i saw some other people with the same problem

What CPU do you have currently? I think @Sup3rKillaX has a 9900KS so will be better placed to answer the question based on your current configuration.

I think the below thread is in relation to what you are describing but so far no one has found a fix. It would annoy me to the point I'd call to Dell to provide a fix.

Over what exactly? I mean its sexy sounding, but unless this is a question of hyperthreading, then its not that much better than a 9700KS, like +1% performance unless we are talking games or applications that make much use of hyperthreading.

    Hi again!

I was searching for something completely different, but I came across this video:

And it totally works! Now my Area51m has precision enabled touchpad! The colouring/lighting of the touchpad also works.
I decided to paste it here, as maybe someone will find it useful :)

    Cheers!
PS: As the touchpad has physical L/R buttons I disabled the right click options with 2 fingers and all the other ones, but I kept the 2/3/4 fingers scrolling and gestures. I think is the best combination :)

Check using CPU-Z, the memory or SPD tab should give you the speed. There are likely other ways but its the only way I know of.

When I was struggling with this I found it VERY picky, when setting your undervolt in afterburner you have to find the exact voltage for YOUR GPU others doing this have noted this as well, I tried 5 or 6 different settings before I settled on .955 as the one that’s working for me at the moment, ( your sweet spot voltage may be DIFFERENT)

I also have a theory that it’s a moving target as the GPU settles in from use and or the paste cures / ages.

ALSO very important ( and a complete nuisance) I must start every gaming session with a reboot / allow AWCC to load check AWCC to make sure it has not lost my settings, then launch Afterburner and apply the undervolt, then I’m good for hours.

I run into trouble if I try to game after sleep or hibernate / I must reboot and verify settings each time and I can game for hours.

It should not be this way but it is.

It’s a much COOLER running chip, and unless your an avid benchmark junkie I doubt you would notice any performance difference ( I’ve read here that it slightly underperforms the 9900K )

HOWEVER be aware that the KS is not recognized by AWCC you will have no OC controls for KS CPU in AWCC.

To ME that’s a small blessing one less thing to worry about AWCC messing with.

I control the KS with ThrottleStop.

You may have a different opinion

Will the regular fan controls work in AWCC? Is it just the OC that doesn't work?

I struggled with this for a while as well the AWCC software does not even follow the same UI conventions from section to section I stumbled onto how to do it be accidents while I was trying to turn off the back panels entirely so it would not bother my Wife while she sleeps,

The only way I can describe how to do it is to get in there and actually click on the thing your trying to change at the time, you will get color controls when you do it correctly, and SAVE theme after each change or it’s lost.

I am able to completely match all the lighting elements or even have them different / you can even change what colors the Alienhead uses to signify Battery power, charging, AC power etc.

It does work but AWCC is CLUNKY as all get out.

Yes the precision drivers work did this a while ago, however be sure to go into windows trackpad settings afterwards and disable all the TAP options otherwise you will have ODD erratic keyboard behavior and unexpected things happen ( at least I did here ) disabling all the tap functionality fixed that for me, ALSO while I’m talking about keyboard be sure to disable STICKY KEYS

Otherwise you will have sticky keys popping up while your bashing keys in RDR2 :)

Fans work fine ( maybe because it runs cooler ? )

Just no OC controls for CPU.

Curious - how much did it cost as an option from HID?

Well they don’t advertise it, I’d recommend you contact Donald at HID directly and see if they even have any, I hesitate to say what I paid because it is so low that it was probably a special deal, and I doubt they sell them for that regularly, I’d hate to get you all excited just to be disappointed by reality.

Has it ever been determined if there is a physical hardware difference between the models that support G-Sync and the ones that don't (with the same panel)?

It’s the panel and the BIOS, prior to 1.5.0 the Chi Mei panel had not been used so support does not exist.

From what others have said here Dell seems to have settled on the Chi Mei panel now for all Gsync orders.

No other difference in anything else on the laptop that I have ever heard about ( Gsync wise ).

It changes color for me but unlike the other items it only changes after I save the profile.

(Never mind, think I misread your problem?)

There seems to be good reviews on them as well as bad reviews, you would be best to google all the threads and make a decision for yourself

Reach out to @Donald@HIDevolution on here and let him know where you are based and what your needs are and he can provide you with their options. You can then decide whether or not its for you.
