Thanks! What do you use to undervolt the GPU and by how much?

Just IMO, but custom OS images and custom drivers are a bad idea rooted in 2 decade old approaches to products. The world of security moves way too fast to stay stuck in something like that. And recovery, should you ever need it, practically requires "standardized" products and drivers. The 51m is a very special beast, but Dell needs to step away from the customized software (not all the way, their apps can happily run on standardized underpinnings). Lenovo has a history of this kind of behavior as well. A few years down the road when the software has all matured, this becomes a boat anchor, a very, very expensive boat anchor.S.K likes this.

Have you considered running Linux in Hyper-V? This is a supported scenario, albeit at command line, but you could then go with the distro of choice from there. Sadly I've wanted to experiment in this area but I'm implementing so many things right now that I don't have the bandwidth to explore.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.

Hey is it normal for one power brick to get hot and not the other? Does it matter where they are plugged in? I’m a little green on updating vbios. The bios seems to update via Alienware update but how do I update the vbios?

Using Afterburner:
1980Mhz at .935V ;
Max temp: ~80C in Metro Exodus and Division 2; there are the best games to test your GPU... one/two hours gaming is what you should try... benchmarks can be quite misleading in terms of system stability and temperature thresholds...
CPU:
Using Throttlestop:
4.8Ghz on all cores @ -111.0 mV undervolt on both Cache and Core.
Max temp: ~80C in Far Cry 5 and Assassin's Creed Origins for two hours....
All temps on stock clocks only.
Hope this helps mate.

That's because its warmer. If you calibrate the AUO to 6000k like this EYESAFE screen is, the whitepoint on the AUO will go as bright bright as the Chi Mei/innlux.
Likewise, If you calibrate the Chi Mei to 6500 - 7500 White point like the AUO is stock, it will go down to a similar brightness as the AUO.
TL DR. While it may be ever so slightly brighter; when calibrated to the same white point, they are extremely close. This is because the Chi Mei is hardcoded at a warmer color temp.Last edited: Jul 21, 2019 -

It normal for the 180W brick to go hot. Happens to all of us.
vBIOS update is just click the .exe and follow the CMD screen really... just close any overclocking software like Afterburner and TS in the background before you begin... it's super easy actually.

Its definitely warmer than my old panel, that's for sure. I don't have any calibration tool sadly so I'll leave it at default for now. I have the option of switching my old AUO panel at the moment but I'm too lazy to do so. Also, my stock temps are fantastic to don't want to open up the laptop so soon.... yet....
I cannot seem to install ICC color profiles on Windows 10 anymore, was working fine on my M17XR3 before which was also on Windows 10... didn't work on my AUO panel either.. or may be I'm doing it wrong...

That’s great man! But like I said, it was a gamble! Could’ve gone either way like others that have reported here their laptop dying because LM spilled/something else...
you can remove the panel without taking the heat sink off. It’s literally just back panel, tron, rib cage, and panel can come off with a few screws.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 21, 2019VoodooChild likes this. -
Hey guys,
I've concerns about my Aera-51M.
Except the first 5 boots, whenever I boot, the screen stays black (does not display anything) along with the color waving keyboard for 15 to 20 seconds. Then the Alienware logo appears and the Windows boot starts : here it lasts for 15 seconds approx.
It takes me to a fairly long 30 seconds total boot time... But I'm using a 970 Evo 1 To SSD.
My Windows is not over loaded with tons of programs as it I got the same boot time with my Clean Installation of Windows (with 0 software at launch)
Also, after every boot or everytime I plug my AC adapters I get this message from the Alienware Command Center, it says :
Too weak adapter has been detected
Ensure your AC adapters are connnected and that you use stock adapters.
Weak adapters may affect performances and charging.
I'm a bit concerned with this warning...
Thank you for your HALP.
EDIT : here is my "last bios time" which is high AF
Last edited: Jul 21, 2019 -
I hesitate to mentions this because my error message (not exact wording) was 'cannot detect adapter size, your system will run at lower performance'. Anyway, I had forgot to re-connect the battery after installing my SSDs. I hope your solution turns out to be as simple. Best of luck to you.hmscott likes this.

After installing Manjaro, did you have an Internet connection? I had Manjaro Live running this morning but had no wifi or ethernet. Pretty sure I can get the Killer hardware working, just wondering if either wifi or ethernet worked out of the box after install.

I don’t see a vbios update for the 2070

Oh wow, thanks! Is there a guide on how to use Afterburner for undervolting on this laptop? I can't seem to get any controls over voltage; only the core and memory clock speeds.
-
Newbie question- if you configure an Area-51m with either the RTX 2070 or 2080 without a g-sync display panel, you still get g-sync through the display port with a g-sync external monitor?
Thanks! -
Does anyone know a good notebook sleeve for this laptop? I bought one for an 18” laptop for my old Sager but it seems a little on the larger side.

This thread is so long its hard to tell from the bits I have read; can anyone give a quick synopsis and rundown of the destroyed mosfets/gpu's. Has the problem been properly addressed and is it safe to buy.

He's referring to these two when he says inlet MOSFETs.
I'm not sure about the thunderbolt.

Which right? lol like i if you were looking at the ports from the back or if you were looking at the ports from the front of the laptop? This isn’t listed on the manual and tech support is really iffy when it comes to dell.VoodooChild likes this. -
As far as I'm aware, it doesn't matter about which ports you plug each cable into, there's no correct way, just plug 'em in and off you go.VoodooChild likes this.

That 180 brick gets hot man and the other one is normal temp. I hope the 180 doesn’t burn out.

VoodooChild Notebook Evangelist
Use two 330W ones if you want normal temps... 180W gets extremely hot I know, but in case it craps out, Dell will replace it for you it you're still under warranty. So, get the longest warranty you can afford and breathe easy. Just enjoy your laptop.

have not read about dying 2080s and mobos since end of may.

Based on my post #13926, try plug the bigger adapter 330W into the right hand side port (the side when you were looking at the front of the laptop, or simply the port closest to the AGA port). I'm using both 330W adapters and the adapter stick with that port is hotter than the other. Please try this and let me know.

It was all on 1.5.6 (booted twice on 1.5.0 so can't tell if there is an improvement on that BIOS version).
Envoyé de mon SM-G965F en utilisant Tapatalk -
After you upgrade your BIOS version, for the first boot, it does take a long time and even during subsequent boots when you open BIOS and then quit it to continue booting. But during normal operation. the boot speed should be quite fast. And, it also depends upon how quickly your boot drive responds to the BIOS's query and starts loading the OS. I have my OS loaded on a Samsung 970 Pro inserted in NVMe slot 1 and I am using grub as my main boot loader. It boots almost instantly every time even with additional hardware (some extra monitors) and thunderbolt multi-adapter cable plugged in that is connected to an external keyboard and a mouse + powering a couple of external hard drives..
-
Oh okay, I'll check what's Grub, I didn't know about this !
I just booted real quick now, but I think Windows loaded less programs because my Alienware Command Center does not contain HOME, FX and FUSION anymore (at least for the first 45 seconds).
Concerning the BIOS load time, I managed to fix it by disabling the boot options 1 and 2 (they were IPV4 and IPV6 something)
Oh, and... from today my 'H' key get stuck in the Keyboard when I press it
DDD WTF is that...
-
Why run Linux in Hyper V? Because you can let Hyper V cover your connections to low level stuff like ethernet and wifi, control your lights and still pop into and out of the Hyper V box for Linux when you want to get some work done.
Not that I don't understand the wish to "go native". I just need things up and running fast and don't have lots of excess time. I didn't mean to dilute the experience.
-
It's not worth it tbh, because except for ethernet, you have everything (at least what I want). HV's have their own overhead though because that's just one additional layer under the main OS. You won't get the same performance as you'd get otherwise when running linux directly. And, RGB is really a petty thing (for me) which you can set from Windows and then quickly boot back into linux via a dual boot setup. The ethernet card is also recognized and picked up and we can add it up easily as soon as the driver comes out so there is not much to worry.

My second unit, ordered the july 10th was planned to be shipped on the 18th, but the order is still in process. No more informations at this time.
Do you guys know if there is a part shortage?
On the Dell online shop my setup is still 5 to 7 day delay before shipping. -
I'd try to get a hold of dell support and see if there is a part missing. It could just be a high volume amount of orders with the july sales that might be delaying it. Or maybe they ordered the wrong part and are waiting for the right one. ((Power supplies were a problem when they first released.))
-
As a matter of fact I know that there is a part shortage. The WiFi card is what dell told me is on back order. I’m pretty sure the 9700k is also on back order.
So I can get two 330w?Last edited by a moderator: Jul 23, 2019 -
So I probably should have been more clear. This would be a sleeve that goes into another bag, not one with handles that I would hold as the “bag” itself.
Something like this:

Seems like flashing 1.5.0 made disappeared the errors I got concerning the ac adapters.
However WTF is going on with my 'H' key, I don't know. It makes a f whole lot of noise when I press it, it's squeaking AF.
I don't want to send it back to Dell only for a keyboard malfunction... -
It's going to get quiet with time. This is the new plastic scissor switch squeaking. Mine did the same for 2 months before it quiet itself down automatically. Just use the heck out of the keyboard and it should normalize.Last edited: Jul 22, 2019

Not surprised the CPU is a shortage. I hear that one all the time. Even on laptops that have soldered cpu's. lol. Hopefully they don't make you wait too long. Having something delayed that you were waiting on is rough.

You'll not regret it, its absolutely incredible for the price. I use it everyday and is sturdy as well. It fits in perfectly with the new Area 51m bag pack as well.
Sent from a Galaxy S9+S.K likes this. -
Not to worry, Dell does this all of the time, and not just on notebooks. It happens to all of us at one time or another, but it's easy to reorder, the only sucky part is you "lose your place in line" and have to go to the back of the order queue.
I've tried before to get them to fix the order queue problem, bumping it up in priority, but if there are parts shortages you won't have much luck - they can bump it up but if there are no parts there are no parts.
I have also added the reorder to a another order already in motion - to avoid the back the queue problem - and that works too if you have other laptop / display / accessory orders in play at the same time, but again the parts shortages aren't going to get cured that way.
When I've got Dell orders I check multiple times a day to catch order issues before they age too far to fix and recover from.
If there are alerts on an order that you can catch - like billing issues - before the order gets canceled, usually 24 hours - sometimes same day - the problem occurs and the order is canceled in the same day. If I didn't get to an email or check on the status in time. Sometimes I got it in time sometimes not, about 50/50.
It's almost as frustrating as watching the tail lights of the UPS truck as it speeds off in the distance after leaving a "tried to deliver" note on my door.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 23, 2019VoodooChild, clayton006, S.K and 1 other person like this. -
