So it sounds like from a temperature standpoint, the 9900KS is working pretty well then? Maybe I'll have to keep my eye out for some sales...

Yes the KS IMO is a great CPU for this laptop, honestly my only struggle ( as is everyone else’s here ) is dialing in the best GPU FAN settings / I’m on BIOS 1.5.0 and the latest 180W VBIOS, the FAN profiles are not optimal and I can’t understand the AWCC manual fan profile “builder” I don’t like running at thermal PERFORMANCE or FULL all the time I’d like to be able to modify the BALANCED setting so that the fans kick in sooner and go higher, then drop with temps, so far not much luck with that.

If only someone smarter then me could figure out some way to get control of the fans I feel most of the issues would go away.

Maybe you can prove this? Die example run Cinebench r20@ 5.0? With hwinfo running If possible?

    Would be great! :)

Maybe you can make an screenshot while R20 is running? And HWinfo on top, so that we can see clocks and temps during the run :)

4400 points sounds more like 4300 mhz allcore as the 9900k scores 4800 points at stock clocks (4700 mhz).

    Throttlestop.JPG
looks like it runs much cooler in Cinebench then what I was doing before, if I remember the only times I have seen it spike were when I was stressing my GPU in Superposition working on my curve, but I was being pretty crazy that day.

This is how my Throttlestop is setup.

And to all here, if you have any suggestions please feel free, I only got back into messing around with PC’s and Windows with this machine.

All my prior PC messing about was from 286 - 486DX and several Celerons back what 30 years or so?

I’ve been Mac only since then until I got the Area51m.

So I am learning and re learning as I go.

I think I already realize one thing, this CPU runs so cool I don't think I need to be undervolting it at all, I am going to remove that and see how it does.

Not sure how to “ re arrange” the display of HWiNFO64 to show both at the same time ?

So maybe I don't fully understand how throttlestop works yet, it looks like my settings really only affect the TURBO ratio and set the CPU to TURBO at 50 all cores.
But the speedstep means that it will go up and down as needed. And of course that's what you want, not really sure I understand how to Lock the CPU at 50 all cores all the time ( not that that's a good idea anyway ) but I get what your looking for now your interested in how the KS would perform if all cores were locked at 50 with no speedstepping.

I'll have to look into this some more and see if that's even something I want to play with.

Not sure if you know, but 9900KS come with new stepping to fix Intels security vulnerabilities. This come with a drawback... Less performance vs. clock speed. One example here... 5.2GHz behave more as 4.8/4.9GHz in benchmarks.
    upload_2020-1-17_0-11-24.png

And yeah, the KS chips will run cooler if the chips can't go past the 131W power limit who is the limit for Area-51m.

Ahh ok cool that explains it, so maybe best strategy is to just turn off Throttlestop and let the chip do it's thing ? What do you think ?

It will boost within the power limits. In same way as power limited BGA chips. Let it be as is. Max out possible undervolt while running at max capped power (lower power consumption within power cap/budget means higher clock speed). Check if undervolt stick while it's in idle speed as well. ThrottleStop is a nice tool for tweaking and everydays usage.

    One week old...

Mysterious Staining on M17 in Lunar White | Today
Hey guys, has anyone with the Lunar White chasis experienced strange staining that they can't seem to get off? I think the shadowy looking stains where my wrist goes are possibly from a black light jacket I wear a lot? Or perhaps it's the finish wearing off? Despite only having the computer for a week...

And I have no idea what's going on, on the front of it. Any suggestions on what to try and lift it off with? I've tried a little rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and got nada. Too afraid to try much else without some insight. Thanks!

Sure some have issues - not everyone though right? Had mine since November not a problem with any of the finish and I'm watching it. Also, Dell will replace the parts... but for people concerned.... go black.

From what I remember, Dell is one of the very few that use only recycled plastic in their products. Could be the staining (color transformation) problems come from this. Seee... Variance in quality due the blend. But don't count on that this type parts will be replaced for everyone. I still remember the 180W psu/Tripod HS flaws. Not all got it replaced. And some opted only for 1 year warranty (spent all money on the machine and hoped for the best). _The staining can happen after one week or +12 months. None know for sure. Yeah, go black.

New Alienware runs at 14fps, Dell refuses to support

@Papusan CPU Power Limit for A51m is 210w. I expect his KS to Run at 95w at the Moment. 4.3ghz allcore in R20 Looks Like 95w. 130w would not result in 66 degree CPU temp.

    My A51m 5.0ghz at R20 draws 175w. With 130w His CPU would run 4.6-4.7ghz.

Maybe the KS is not fully supported?

How bad was the original paste, and what reduction did you see?

I also did mine on the w/e; the CPU paste was OK, but the GPU was seriously excessive. I had no reduction on the CPU and 1c on the GPU using MX-4. Getting the GPU clean was NOT ez.

Yeah, I talk about 9900KS which Dell won’t support. The 131W limit shows up in bios. And you can’t change it in neither in TS or XTU. Could be the firmware cripple it further than the 131W cap. But remember the KS chips use less voltage at lower clock speed.

I think your ambient temps. have to be pretty low too, my office was 38c yesterday, so I was idling @ 50c. My office has no AC, and it's at the top of the house.

Matrox Millennium was my card of choice, until the Voodoo came out and I was blown away.

Pretty sure I had all of these probably in a similar order there were far fewer choices back then we all had the same things if we wanted to keep up.

Man VooDoo that really brings back memories, what was the competition? Something with and R in it ? Man those were holy wars like PC vs Mac.

And if I remember for a time there were some games exclusively for one card or the other, if you picked the wrong horse and a great game only supported the other card you were out of luck unless they decided to write a new version supporting your card, I think that all changed when a Unreal came out that game was a revolution, like Wolfenstein was before it.

A walk down memory lane...3dfx (voodoo) had all the exclusives, but it also cost way more and you needed a video card as it just did 3D.
I pretty much stuck w/ ATI after that until the GTX 9xx series.

edit: gmail tells me I also had an nVidia 8800GT June 2008

I used 99% IPA to clean off the standard stuff it worked quite well and if I'm honest my Dell paste job didn't look as full on as the pics posted in this thread.

I cannot say the same for my own pasting job though, I'm imagining the next time I open this up it will look similar or worse to what was posted haha, every day is a school day... for me anyway with this thing.

Also the m17 on i have dispatch was supposed to get exchanged but all of a sudden theres parts shipped, i think, and know one knows nothing about that either when i phone haha

They treat you like crap, when all u want to know is whats going on, the people who know ignore you and the ones that answer the phone have no clue lmfao

    Ahh Dell i remember now.

To be completely honest, I do not believe we will get a bios update for any memory speed increase, I feel like if the 51m is being offered with faster ram now and there isn't a bios out already which there isn't. I'm pretty sure dell just updated the motherboard entirely, my laptop came with an Rev. 2 motherboard in it and I have seen older Rev 1 sold before on eBay. So maybe they have a rev3 Board that actually supports faster ram now. But hey I could be wrong! Just seems odd.

Thats good support information though, I think a new revision could be the indication this memory offering (Speed) support holds some water.

I mean I guess but that mean all the other 1000s of people that bought the 51m will suffer with 2400 unless return or replace motherboard completely with newer revision but I HOPE they can do bios update and call it a day

Do anyone knows if it will support 2933 if installed 128GB memory or maximum is 64GB to get this speed?

Yes and I would feel for those that purchased their promised "Upgrade-able" device but with Alienware "Dell" it would not be uncommon behavior.

Does anyone have a video of the RTX2080 throttling down due to the limit? I need it to pass on to Alienware. Trying to get something done about this and the engineering team wants a video of it happening.

    EDIT: NM , found one.
