OK new screen installed...thanks to Donovan (Dell Tech).

    1. The model ends in 14 or 1.4 ..the original screen ended in 0 ....so same Manufacturer but updated
    2. The lines are indeed gone...actually a massive difference
    3. Colours/Contrast are off but didn't have the time to tweak/sort (anyone got an colour profile for the new screen?)

Will check in later, but lines gone..woot

Had time to tweak a little and play some games......way better screen for me. Colours look better in games, sharper due to no lines.

My new replacement has the new QHD panel without the horizontal banding. What a beauty! Love it!

Got mine replaced, screen is so much better. No lines yay it actually looks 1440p now. very crisp.

Only comment is the colours are a bit dull, which can be tweaked but no idea how.

    Any tips or profiles ?

Outside of using real color correction methods, I personally find bumping the contrast up brings back the color from the washed out default color tone. You can add a little vibrancy if you want to make things pop but contrast does most of the work. If you're going for accuracy then you need to get a calibration tool.

Hi guys. I know it is an old post but It is related to a problem I got. I ordered the" 17.3" 3D LED LCD SCREEN B173QTN01.2 2560X1440 FOR Dell Alienware M17 R4 120Hz" and I hooked it up to my laptop. I am getting a problem where only the intel graphics card is recognizing my screen. The nvidia 1070 is not recognizing my screen. I tried deleting and reinstalling the nvidia card and I it still does not recognize my screen, When I force the computer to use the integrated gaphics card using "alt+f7" and I restart my pc, I get the alienware logo, and then a black screen. I know that windows started because the tobii eye tracker flashes and I log in, but during the whole process the screen is black. I need help in getting my 1070 to recognize my screen. Thank you.

I found that if you don't have a GSYNC system (ordered the system WITH 120hz at the start), then you cannot use the 120hz screen during discrete graphics mode, only hybrid/optimus (you can switch with fn+f7). The 1070/1080 will not recognize the 120hz without GSYNC board.

I see. Thanks for the reply. I know that i did not order 120hz at the start. I would like to know if there is anything I need to buy or replace to make my screen work on during discrete graphics mode? thank you.

Because of my recent discovery that there are different variations of these screens B173QTN01.4,some reports itself as AUO 1296 instead of AUO 1496 like expected (lost about a week searching why I was getting black screen after driver installation in windows and lack of g-sync) can anyone send me a link from ebay to buy the truly compatible model that matches the dell part number: JYWWF ? I am tired of waiting more than a month again to receive a screen from china that is incompatible like my previous one.
So, let me know guys, if anyone managed to find the proper screen from ebay that works with any nvidia driver and g-sync also is available, please tell me who is the seller you bought the screen.
    best regards

    Hey guys - grabbed a 17 R4 (Core i7, NVIDIA 1080). It has ... an awkward TN 120Hz 2K screen (AUO 1496).

When I first booted it up, felt as if someone did a low-quality replacement. For this price range the color gamut is shocking / worse than a mid-priced laptop. Issue appears to be very poor backlighting uniformity / black looks grey / and there are horizontal lighter & darker patches, when you put on a pure black wallpaper! (it was from April 2017 so the AW cs said it has the latest version of the panel). The color gamut is ....err. :/

Hoping to get it serviced. Has anyone had their 120Hz 1440P screen replaced with another resolution? (getting an impression even if it's replaced, the 120Hz TN might still look grey / have poor color gamut). Was hoping to stay away from UHD but maybe that's a better swap.

get it replaced with 4k gsync, 100 srgb guarantee (from me)
the black value of the qhd panel is .80 thus resulting in blacks looking grey

Thanks - I'll see what they say. Bet they'll try to replace it with another grey QHD panel (for all I know it could be worse). Not sure how such a panel ever made their way onto a NV 1080 machine.

if your only option is qhd, you shd get it replaced again, believe me it cant be any more bad. what you seem to have gotten is worse than the average.
If you got it in April last year, what have been doin so far?

Gamers tend to prefer response and high refresh rates over black levels. Even though the color range on the QHD panel is quite good. Its a tough choice, fluidity vs black levels. But try playing with the gamma settings. Often they are set wrong for these panels and can boost the contrast a lot.

The response time black to white (combined) is 12ms and gtg is 30ms. I dont know how you call this good. If you want good the GT75VR has a FHD panel with btw 6ms and gtg 12ms that too with 100% srgb and .26 black level. The only thing alienware offers is the QHD resolution, and i dont believe one should give up this much response time just for a qhd panel.
Even if you try your best you can't increase the contrast on the QHD above 700.

Apart from that the feel is much smoothers when you play on 120hz compared to 60. but 30ms gtg. Do you have a source for that? Thats quite high.

the initial auo1096 had 15ms gtg, but after they removed the banding in 1496, they got rid of that too.

    Hello everybody!

I have a dell alienware 17 r4 with FullHD display. I fixed the backlight bleeding (thanks, dell, for such a great opportunity to improve a 2.5k usd laptop using foam tape), though the matte film on this panel is too rough causing (I couldn't find how it's called in English, direct translation from Russian is "crystalic effect") terrible effect. I denitely saw 17.3 FullHD matte screens which were looking much better, so maybe somebody can help me finding a replacement display for my laptop?

    Best regards, Timur.
