That's it - just no more lines? Do you have OLD/NEW to compare side by side? My lines were not bad but overall the color/overall display was quite poor. Performance was spot on but was hoping to get a better overal dispaly (color/angle etc..)

Hello guys,
after reading this thread, I called dell and asked for a screen replacement. They were not aware of this problem , and they hold me on the line while the representative was trying to find where this dell recall is posted in their service documents. Then after he couldn't find anything regarding this, they asked me to send a photo of the screen showing the scanlines, which I did. Then today I received the replacement screen from DHL express and as I can see from the part number that is printed on the box is the same old screen with the scanlines problem.
I am going to call them again tommorow and give them the new dell part number I got from this thread. Anything else I can tell them to help sort this out?
-
The colour definitely is not as good as the UHD screen, but an adjustment on the gamma has cut the 'wash out' and makes it look pretty good IMO. It is pretty much identical to the previous screen in terms of the way it looks apart from the removal of the lines. regards the viewing angle - can't really say it is bad, I can see my new screen clearly from the side, top down is not so good, but seeing as I generally sit in front of my computer when using it I don't really mind the slight limitation on the angle.
If I had to choose between the QHD and a UHD, i'd go with the QHD, windows high DPI scaling just isn't quite there and a lot of the apps I use are just useless on the UHD. That combined with the fact I have 120Hz screen with g-sync and good enough colors (i'm no digital artist) and zero light bleed makes it a win in my book.SYHAP likes this. -
I called to get mine replaced and an onsite guy came to replace it.
I showed him the lines before he replaced it.
After replacement the lines were still there. Looked at the box and then sent a refurbed same screen.
We called dell to tell them we wanted the JYWWF part and the guy we were talking to wanted another pic of the screen.
When I moved the lid to get a better light angle the screen went black. Nothing would get it back.
Plugged in an external monitor to the hdmi and it was up and working just nothing on the laptop screen.
The onsite tech and phone tech messed with it for a bit and couldn't fix it.
They are sending me a new machine.
I am trying to press them for the Gen 7 machine hoping that I don't get lines with that.
OR I may just see if I can downgrade to the 1070 card with the 4k panel.
I just don't want the lines! -
Guys I cant sort this out with dell, they keep telling me that there is no new screen. I gave them the new part number and they dont accept it. Their system has only the old screen and they told me that the technician will come tomorrow to replace the same screen and if I still have problem with the scanlines I can call them again for another replacement.
-
This is why I dont trust the engineers....i had 2 fry 2 system boards replacing a keyboard......
-
I tried to have the onsite guy tell them we wanted part jywwf but they said that isn't what came with my laptop so they wouldn't send it.
I don't know if you can get around that.
Then the screen blanked out and took care of that.
I almost want to get a hold of Frank Azor since he knows what is up and see what he can do:

Exact same thing happened to me.... twice. When I looked at the part order request online, it listed the correct new part as JYWWF being sent. When I opened the box it was the old model lol.
-
Message Frank Azor on twitter.

Can you guys do me a favor? (also anyone else that has experienced a similar issue.)
Could you please PM me?
I have a guy at Dell that would like to check into this more closely.
For one, they obviously want to fix your issues and get you the proper LCD, but also to figure out what is going wrong.
Thanks! -
My panel was replaced today and got rid of the horizontal lines issue, no pixel errors (only a quick check though) and zero light bleed where as before I had a tiny bit at the bottom. If it wasn't for Frank Azor I would have send this laptop back a long time ago, the normal customer and tech service is abysmal (UK customer).
Correction, after a closer look... 6 dead pixels....Last edited: Mar 29, 2017andyman404 likes this. -
ok - i'll set my expectations LOW in terms of getting a better quality 'colour' and wash out since that's what's the most glaring when comparing this screen to just about any other this gen laptop screen. Here's hoping the 7th GEN brings my 90+ temps into the 80's.
-
Could you please take some photos of the dead pixels?
Thanks -
The pictures have already been passed on to the tech and engineer teams at Dell but how would you like them, DM me your email? They will now replace the whole unit with the new model btw..
-
I just got a replacement for my AW17R with the lines in the panel.
They sent a brand new one (7820HK CPU). There are no lines. JOY!andyman404 and MogRules like this. -
Well my 7th gen 17 finally showed up and side by side my AU1496 and AUO1096 are identical in every way .... both are 2016 mfg date. My AU1096 was a late Feb early March production so I'm guessing they may have fixed the 1096's by then? I was hoping for better color but side by side it's impossible to tell my 1496 from my 1096. No lines on either btw.MogRules likes this.

Got the new model 17 with the 7820hk and the 120hz screen. Can confirm that the "watermark" is no more, and although the colours are good ( maybe I am just too used to a glossy panel ) I find they are a little washed out, but it isn't terrible by any means. I think most of it is just comparing glossy to matte which will never be the same.
-
Yep - no improvement in quality ... other than perhaps no banding for folks that had it on their 1096 panel - bit of a disappointment.
-
I put in for light bleed issue on my old 6820HK, They ended up building another system and sending it out to me. They were nice and allowed me to get ahold of the new TN panel in this build which looks awesome.
-
Is it possible to buy this (B173QTN01.4) display? Order from Dell?
-
If you had the previous model with the lines you can call up dell and complain about it. If you want to buy the part completely separately...hmm might have to see if another member here knows where to do that. Don't think dell sells parts separately like that if your system has nothing to do with it.
-
B173QTN01.4 is the AUO model number so unless it's a dellienware special (which I find hard to believe since the 01.0 banding isn't restricted to AW models) it should appear on the open market at some point.

So I have a bit of an issue...
I had an older m17x R4 since 27Dec12, 3740QM/680M/120Hz+3D Display. Everything else on the machine was basic. Had several overheating issues and the case was forwarded up and Exchanges took it over.
First machine that they suggested to me was the new Alienware 17R4, Refurbished. 6820HK, 1080, 32GB Ram, 512gb SSD, 1TB HDD, 1440p 120hz screen. This machine was an early march unit, and thus the screen had the lines issue, but does not have an issue with heat at all. The lines were clearly visible, so as the twitter post, I contacted support.
Support gets a hold of the case, tells me they are going to send me a replacement screen... the new screen! A few days later I get a call from said tech who tells me that the screen is not in stock and the only way to get the replacement screen was to swap the unit out for a new unit, yay! I get a spec sheet of the new machine being built for me, yes being built, not refurbished! 6820HK evolves into 7820HK, 512gb SSD upgrades to 1TB SSD... Screen downgrades to the 4K/60Hz panel.
I am not sure what to do, as the tech has told me:
We are providing you with the 4k screen in order to avoid the banding issue from happening again.
At this point, the system will be shipping on Monday and unfortunately, we are not able to change nor cancel the order at this point.
I will provide you with the tracking information once it is available.
I thought they had a 1440p replacement panel to take care of this issue? What can I do? I know I got lucky and got one hell of an upgrade from what I had as a replacement under warranty... but the 1440p screen, I can see the difference in frame rates. I am at a loss here. -
That sucks but I'm sure I read in another post that you could buy the new replacement screen with the new part number off eBay for <$100. I'd do that and swap it out myself, it's really easy!
The old one was 17.3" QHD (2560x1440p) 120Hz 4ms 391-BCXE where the new one is 391-BDFB
Hope this helps,
Pete

I spoke with Alienware Technical Support this morning about a screen replacement for a 17R4 with a 6820HK and QHD panel. The tech said that the repair cannot be done onsite, and that I must ship the computer to the repair depot to have it replaced.
Are there any higher level support contacts that might be able to approve an onsite repair, as I think others have received. As far as I know its just a raw display panel swap which should be much simpler than replacing a motherboard. -
that depends entirely on what warranty you bought with the system, and if your warranty covers on site repair, it's no excuse for them to deny you that.
-
XX.4 isnt available anywhere yet.
-
What?
Before my current replacement, I've had my display replaced 4 times, all on site.
Last I heard, the panels are on backorder until May. However, you need to call and talk to a different rep because that's BS.
It's literally takes no longer than 15min to replace the panel. The bezel snaps off, you unscrew the panel, pop the new one in, put the bezel back (they should send a new one) and then you're set. -
Lol yep! I'm having mine replaced I Monday, only requested it to be replaced on Friday so that's next business working day! Well done Dell!!

That's one thing i do not get... how your panel was simply swapped out while mine is getting a full exchange.
The difference with mine is I'm getting upgraded from the 6820hk to the 7820hk and from the 512gb ssd (hynix) to a 1tb ssd (unknown yet). And my tech is ADAMANT that only the 4k screens do not have the line issue regardless of what I tell him.
I guess I'll toy with the new (instead of refurb) unit and see how far I can push the 7820hk... grats though on the easy swap. -

Yeah that is what I figured. They made it sound like the procedure was too complicated for the onsite tech. I went back and forth with the rep's manager to just get an onsite repair. I even asked for a loaner (which HP had done for our company once when they had a two month backorder on a Dreamcolor display panel). The warranty definitely states it has onsite service - the basic depot option wasn't even available when the purchase was made. It was purchased via Dell Outlet as a refurbished mode, not that that should make a difference when it comes to warranty service.
I also wish Dell would have made some kind of service bulletin that I could have referred the tech to so I didn't have to spend 45 minutes reinstalling drivers to try and fix a problem that is even visible in the bios. -
Hey Pete:
What happened to your screen; I thought your original QHD was one of the fortunate good ones without lines, good clarity/brightness, etc.?
...as mine certainly is...thus far. -
Talk to a different rep.
This is simply not true.
There has been stock issues when it comes to the parts but in those situations they are just offering and exchange for a whole new laptop as the stock for new systems is plentiful.
Call back! I will inform the power that be that this is still going on they will be fixing it.win32asmguy likes this. -

Interesting. I spoke with the rep, his manager, and DellCares on twitter, all claimed that the replacement can only be done at the depot, and made no mention of an system exchange.
I guess I can call back later after work. Over the weekend, I saw the new QHD panel on a display model at Best Buy. It indeed does not have the lines, and the clarity of text (especially at 100% scaling with low contrast colors) is much better. -
Are you in the USA?
PM me, I think I may be able to help you.

Just to follow up, last night I was contacted by a representative at Alienware, who setup a new system exchange so I could get the fixed panel!
-
Yeah that's odd, new panel installed within 30 mins and it's perfect, no lines or anything. Well done Dell!

Hi, my first display was a great display, no light bleed, or dead pixels. The lines were there but only when looking real close. They didn't bother me and I never noticed them, I just wanted to test Dell's support really
New display is pretty much exactly the same but with no lines. Impressed!

Picked up the this system from the outlet. Shipped last Thursday, arrived Monday. Has the replacement LCD in it. Colors are a bit off, but it's a pretty fair tradeoff to get the specs behind this LCD
-
I have my replacement screen booked in for next week, excited!

Well, I did some talking with the Rep that I have been dealing with, Marco at the exchange team and he agreed on a few points I brought up and decided to exchange the system out and it should all be taken care of.
7820HK // 1080gtx // 32GB Ram // 1TB SSD // 1TB HDD // 1440P 120hz Screen, NEW machine.
One thing that I saw between the two laptops before I sent the newer replacement back using GPU-Z and Nvidia Inspector
The newer machine (which is sent back due to issues), 4K/7820HK
Nvidia Inspector reported as a GP104-A for the GPU spot, and GPU-Z on the same field reports it as 1BAO.
The older machine (which I am using until I get the exchange), 1440p/6820HK
Nvidia Inspector reported as a GP104-B for the GPU spot, and GPU-Z on the same field reports it as GP104.
The machine with the GPU identified as GP104-A was having many issues and temps were well within limits:
Throttling at 150 Watts (the 1440p unit can easily hit 200 watts and not stutter)
Throttling at lower Voltage
Randomly a frame would go blank and I can see static
Screen locking up for a couple seconds at a time, normally under heavy load when it occurs.
** According to the base clocks of the GPU it had the vbios adjustment done to it.
Could the GPUs have been same base unit but different revisions? -
I received my 6829 1080 17 R4 from the UK outlet store just over 2 weeks ago. I didn't notice the striping straight away but after using it for a while it's becoming more and more noticeable, especially on certain solid colours (usually dark). It seems to be affecting text a little, but that might just be my ageing eyes.
I'm going to get in touch with support to see if I can get an updated screen (I have 1yr premium onsite support). Has anyone here been able to get a screen swap in the UK? -
hey buddy yeah I'm in the UK and have an engineer coming out next week to replace the screen was pretty easy to arrange
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk -
Cool. My first AW so I assume you just got in touch with support? Are they accepting it as a known problem or did they make you jump through hoops?
Cheers -
they didn't mention know problem I said it was all over forums and they asked for a picture and proof of purchase engineer scheduled days later. I could have it replaced on Monday but I'm home every Friday so have it reshedlued for then. pretty good customer service. how you liking your laptop? pretty neat aren't they
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk -
OK. I assume picture, as in camera picture of screen? Could you share your photo, just interested to see if it's much different to what I am seeing?
As for the laptop...love it...such good build quality, shame on the screen. -
it was hard to capture but they are definitely there and would be a constant irritation if I just left it. sorry noticed I didn't answer your earlier question. I just started an online chat with a Dell rep and they took it from there over email. didn't speak to anyone. yep the laptop is very cool. bit of work getting it optimal though
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk -
Same as what I am seeing. Thanks for responding. As i said I didn't notice at first but once i noticed i just can't shake them, a constant irritation as you say. Will speak to Dell tomorrow.
-
Should have a technician coming out tomorrow or Friday to fix. Hoping that they don't ship the same panel....let's see.
