    My 2 cents:

coincidentally I got my wife a 30gb ipod for xmas, and she got me a zune. my wife, who is a complete technophobe, could not use the ipod, or more specifically itunes. she took to the zune immediately however, and clearly likes it much more.

I must say that I do not like the iTunes software - it feels like apple is constantly trying to sell me something, and I do not like that you are stuck with such limited format choices. I prefer the ipods actual design, but the zune has a much bigger (although same resolution) screen. The actual interface of the devices are both good and easy to use. battery life seems a bit better for the zune. and there are way too many people with ipods out there. so zune over ipod for me by a slim margin.

Neither is perfect, and they are both pretty cool. plenty of other options out there too.

$500 for the phone and a 2 year contract for $100/mo. That's a pretty penny.
That doesn't even include accessories, carrying case, headset. That'll be just above $3k.

    I think I will wait.

Okay Syndrome, I know this is an old comment, but I agree, Apple has amazing marketing skills. But I say Apple has more than just marketing. Anyways, not my point here. Apple does marketing, and it does it incredibly well. Microsoft is another story. Everyone knows Apple's iPod+iTunes ads. And here's Microsoft's Zune ad:

    <object width='425' height='350'><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ILEnu8gdus0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ILEnu8gdus0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width='425' height='350'></embed></object>

I would prefer the creative Zen or the Archos. I have the archos 504 80GB and at the same price as an ipod video you get a bigger and better screen plus the ability to play avi files with mp3 audio and xvid codecs without converting. It is bulkier but you get a lot more to make up for it.

the creative zen vison M has just got thinner but is still thicker than the ipod. it also plays avi's easily and the screen is better quality than the ipod too, can't beat the archos screen though.

The zune is nice but its limited to 30GB, not a very competitive price to make it more attractive and its bulky too.

edit: gah! this threat is ancient!

The Zune has been selling for ~$50 USD cheaper now, which definitely makes it a more compelling choice.

Having been an owner of both I give the edge to iPod in content, and usability of player and software, and to the Zune for FM Tuner, sound quality, and screen size. At the end of the day I could probably live with a Zune seeing as I'm not big on downloading video content.

Edit: 2x gah! this thread is ancient! :p

How does that ad make you want to buy a zune? Anyways, I have a Cowon Iaudio X5, which is awesome. I will however be replacing it with an Ipod 6th Gen when it dies.

I've got the X5 also, its a great player, although theres a few things that I don't like about it, like how you have to convert your .avi's to put them on it. THe Cowon A2 is awesome, just drag your .avi's on it and watch them on the awesome 4" screen. Its a great quality screen.

Edit: Wow, thats gotta be the dumbest advertisment I've ever seen. I don't understand how thats suposed to make me want a zune.

Your running into your battery dying on your X5 too ehh.. Yeah, if your into watching movies and such then the A2 is awesome, the battery life is much better than any other player in its class, which is really nice.

Anyways I chose what the successor of the Creative Vision:M will be.

Whatever that may be, will be my mp3 player of choice.

Yes, the X5 is indeed awesome. Simple tree-based interface, very simple to use as a portable HDD, interfaced with PSPs for file sharing, FM audio recording, but most importantly plays all the formats, including FLAC and OGG

Only negatives are the low-res screen and the wonky joystick, which I had to replace once. Cowon was good about it, though.

I still have it tucked away in my desk, although it's given way to a Zune only because the battery's about to go. :(

I don't even use those. I don't think I even use the EQ. My music taste is too wide, so when something sound good, other don't and it ended up being a battery drain. I like my in-earphones though, they're fairly good and make thinks sound good. Cool thing to note: The sound of the X5 is better than that of the ipod 4th gen (haven't tried 5th gen). I tested it with the same songs and earphones.

I wanted something that held a lot and the IPOD 80 GB was it.I also have a bunch of IPOD accessories and like that there is more to select from. The Zune did not. I don't trust 1st generation Windows products either.

The Zen was the strongest contender until I found that it needed 2 cables + an adapter. The dock wasn't included either which was also a negative. The price was alluring.

That review you linked was excellent.

This quote below is probably the key feature that makes the Zen most desireable:

    -------------------------

I blame it on the reviewer above. I was about to buy one at an airport, but quickly checked the review on the notebook. After picturing multiple cables sticking out of the player, I was turned off.

Im a Zune guy, mainly because my music was already mostly wmv (dont ask me why) and I didnt want to rip it all again. Plus I really dont care for Itunes too much. I like the widescreen aspect too for watching shows on trips and plane flights, etc. Honestly, almost every player I have seen in person has impressed me, so maybe Im just easy to please :)

Well actually the Zune isn't wide screen but it makes you think it is. Its still a very slick MP3 player and it is very easy to navigate even though it doesn't have a "scroll wheel" picked mine up for 20 buck from a friend who didn't ever use any MP3 player, I'm in total love with it, it gets my vote

The white one looks nicest IMO. It looks neat 'cause the control pad is still black. The "black" zune is really grey... kind of drab. The brown one is okay.

Supposedly there's a red one now, but I haven't seen it. Oh yeah, there's pink too, you should get that, haha.

Yes, the Creative Vision M and Vision W have good features, but I have to say that they don't have the best that you can find. The Cowon A2 has all of the features of the Vision M and more, I've owned both of them.

I was a big "ipod hater" for a while (I was a dell dj owner).

When my dell dj's hdd froze permanently I went out and got a 60gb ipod. Well I love it...I don't really use it for video but it's great for everything else. There really isn't a mp3 player out there that can really compare with the originality and ease of use the ipod brings to the table. Plus, the 6th gen ipod (on the iphone) is even better with it's touch screen functionality and cover flow mode.

.. if you can get your headphones to fit in the iPhone without having to use one of these!

Haha, just kidding. :) The iPod's strong point, to me, is their navigation system. The click wheel is very easy to use, and they have gapless playback which is not found on a lot of players. But, they don't have great sound quality, which, I think, should be one of your main priorities when buying a mp3 player. I mean, you DO want to listen to good-sounding music right? ;)

lets not get into the iphone cuz that is the single most biggest rip off apple has ever released to date! costs more with less space and less features than the competitors, when you're done with the revolutionary experience you will be wondering how you were tricked into buying a sub-par phone with a touchscreen. oh and when u need ur battery replaced, send it away and be phoneless for a while LOL good idea apple :p

Where did you get that Zunes are less durable? Almost every person who has one thinks it's build quality is extremely study. Just check the Head-Fi forums (a lot of them have Zunes). Also, the problem is not necessarily iTunes, but the fact that the iPod only plays .aac and mp3 audio, which is not as high quality as .ogg or .flac files. It's not a big deal if you don't have good earphones or can't hear the difference, but to a lot, being able to play the higher quality audio files is a must. That, and the fact that it doesn't have an equalizer, which the Zune and many other DAPs do, turns some people off. However, if you don't need higher quality files or an equalizer, the iPod is definitely worth taking a good look at.
