blah at that 'durable' as wear and tear is so highly subjective. I know kids with $65 mp3 players (that i would consider throw aways) take care of their gear better than most guys i know who have $200-300 players
And those who say 'oh the apple has made my life so much better' makes me laff the most

IPODs are far from durable. I bought a screen cover and hard plastic cover for it. Why such poor quality in materials for a portable device prone to damage from drops and scratches?

MP3 quality, in general, does not compare to CD Audio. We have taken a step back in quality for storage capacity.

LOL you see hc1, the problem with your statement is not only that the ipod is just as "indurable" (new word for the dictionary? hehe) as the zune but that by saying no one needs 30GB in a player, you have shot down the ipod video which is what people here are comparing the zune to. also you appear to not do everything other people do so you cannot see why an 8GB player just isnt enuff these days. I have an archos 504 80GB and a Zen V 4GB. I barely fill the archos up but the Zen V is almost filled and it only has a small portion of my Mp3 stuff.

That's why FLAC and OGG are so good! Though the average person can't tell the difference from an mp3. :)

I can't tell the difference between Flac and a 320kbit Mp3 (made from the flac file), but under that (especially 192kbit CBR and lower) i can tell with my low-mid end in-earphones (creative ep630).

FYI, ogg is not a file format, but a container which can be used with several codecs. However, ogg-sound files are usually compressed using Vorbis. Which is a lossy format slightly better than AAC (AAC LC), especially at lower and higher bitrates. At mid bitrates (128kbit), they're all virtually the same. So to summarise, Vorbis seems to be the best lossy codec. For now.

And the ipod supports a lossless codec created by Apple.

Definitely! I still have a 1st gen Shuffle that I got I think 2-3 years ago which has been through hell and back and still works fine! These things must be made from some strong plastic, lol. The nanos are supposedly durable, though, with the metal shell and all.

I was reading up on the zune, it has two things that I really like. The UI is supposed to be much better than the IPOD's besides the layout and actual interface a big plus is that album art icons go next to the listings wich makes it easier to find things and more visually appealing.

2nd is that it has wireless g. It doesnt have much use yet, you can share songs with other zune users ect. But I bet some hacks are out there or will be out that let you use it full fledged. Who knows maybe even a web broswer and you can use it at wi-fi hot spots?? its not too far fetched.

the zune is too expensive for what its worth tho. and its bigger than the ipod. personally i like the iriver clix the most of all them just its storage space sucks vs the others.

Don't get too into the Zune's wireless. You can only connect with other Zunes, so it's not really that useful. Can't browse the web or anything with it, unfortunately.

I know, I clearly stated all it does right now is share songs and stuff, but said I wouldnt be supprised if there are hacks or will be hacks to enhance it.

Do you have any idea how extensive hacks go for things like the playstation portable, nintendo ds, game boy, several cell phones (like my sony w600) ect.

It has full fledged wireless there in hardware, we just need some software to take advantage of it.

    Hmmm good news I guess.

Im not the type to use a mp3 player much, if I ever needed one, thats what my phone is for. I figured most of the time when I want one is when I dont have one, so thats why I invested in a mp3 player phone. the Sony W600 and W800 are perfect for this.

i use an ipod along with panasonic in-ear headphones and im real happy with it being my primary music player
then i have my Nokia6233 with the 2Gb card that too with nokias in ear headphones
so id recommend u either getting a good music phone which nokia provides in its music edition or an SE walkman edition if you would rather go for a phone where the latter audio quality being superior but in reality then again nutin can beat an dedicated music player and in that category i would choose an ipod and i like itunes too so its kind of decided for those who do not fancy itunes theres always winamp

How could a shuffle not be durable? Its so simple, and screen-less. If it wasn't durable then wow, apple would suck worse than I already think they do. ;)
