i may try out the rat 7 too, unless the rat 9 comes with just a regular usb dongle... i like the mamba, i just hate how the stupid charger acts as the dongle... that way its not really portable. i dont want to be dragging that stupid thing around if i want a wireless mouse. companies ruin perfectly good mice by makeing the charger the dongle, defeats the whole freakin purpose of wireless and portability.

    I received the mouse today

I configured the mouse to its maximum length and width

    R.A.T. 7 vs Microsoft Sidewinder X8
    [IMG]

On the left the X8 and on the right the R.A.T. 7
    [IMG] [IMG]

These are the buttons that are programmable
    [IMG]

This is the DPI settings and the precision button
    [IMG]

Each programmable button can perform a combination of keyboard shortcuts
    [IMG]

I still am trying to get used to the feeling and the shape of this mouse.
Unfortunately it still feels kind of small to my hand and I expected it to be more wide for my thumb but still it is much better than the X8.
I will keep you updated once I use it for a couple of days and especially how if feels while gaming.
The buttons are a bit sensitive and easily pressed (especially the right click, I press it without even realizing it) but have a good return.
The plastic parts of this mouse have a very nice smooth feeling, very good quality.
Scrolling is very smooth without the annoying sound of clicking.

Sorry for the quality of the pics but I used my cellphone with very poor lighting

that looks awesome man, im prolly going to get the rat 7 as well, th 9 is taking way to freaking long to come out, and they dont tell us if it has a stupid charging dock/reciever.. if it does im passing on the wireless and just getting the cable model... the mamba could have been such a awesome mouse, if it wasent for the dumb charger/usb reciever

I had preordered the R.A.T. 9 for more than 4 months now and the waiting was driving me crazy as well, plus the charger for the battery is the receiver as well which makes it really unportable and I already had a bad experience from the X8 which has a huge receiver... so I ended up with the 7 and I didn't regret it all... The main reason I wanted the R.A.T 7/9 was to have a mouse that better fitted my hand and so far it's better than what I had.

A few questions to anyone who has this mouse...

    1. Can you middle click? (Dumb question, but the pictures make the wheel look funny.)

    2. Is the thumbscroll discrete? Like, does it go clicky like most normal mice, or does it smooth scroll?

    3. Which/how many of the buttons are programmable? I believe the sniper mode button can't be reprogrammed, but how about the DPI buttons or the Mode switch button?

    4. Can the software detect which program you're running? IE, can you change programs and have different settings for each?

    Thanks!

    1. Yes you can click the wheel (downwards only, not sideways like the X8 for instance)

    2. The thumbscroll is discreet (you feel it every time you scroll) but it doesn't make any click sound.

    3. Only 5 buttons are programmable with 3 different modes, the dpi switch button has 4 stages (not programmable), the precision aim button is not programmable either (you can set different speeds though).

    4. It can't detect different programs but that's why it has 3 different modes, so you can assign each mode with a different function for the same key.

An update. So far the only thing that really bothers me with this mouse is the fact that it doesn't have memory to store the functions of the assigned buttons and it always needs to have the program installed to load them.
I format my disk a lot like 10 times per month sometimes and I hate installing the program every time just to keep a simple profile of the buttons. Even worse if you take the mouse to a different computer you need to install the program there as well (not good if you take it to work and you don't have administrative privileges to install the drivers)

I haven't tried the g9x but the R.A.T 7 which is the wired version of R.A.T 9 has a smoother scroll compared to sidewinder X8 which does that annoying clicking sound on every discreet step (R.A.T 7 scroll is silent).

Im comparing it with the g9x because the scroll wheel on that is absolutely smooth, on the "frictionless" mode (you can change it to clicks mode). Im wondering if the R.A.T 7 or 9 (i know they are both same) has that feature. Which is also found in a few other logitech mice, eg, Performance mouse fx.

Not sure about battery life, but there are 2 batteries given, so one can be recharged in the dock and the other in use, and when the on in the mouse is flat, you switch it with the charged one.

Razer doesn't need to. They have enough unique mouse shapes that there's something for just about everyone. And I'd take a mouse with a single, sturdy shape over a Transformer toy with more moving parts than my engine any day. Besides, they do have the Imperator with adjustable button placement.

^Yea well its not like they are all the same features with each different mouse, it seems only the deathadder and mamba has the shape most people desire, nobody seems to want Razers ambidextrous mouse. Imho, the mamba and naga are the only two mouse worth the premium you pay for. And you only buy Razer products from what it seems. And i also feel razer does not implement any special features other mouse creators do, like for example scroll wheel tilt buttons, they just stick to basics and add more fansy lights that wont affect gameplay. There seems to be always a mouse that is better or just about equal to the Razers that costs way less. Having said that, even the Mamba seems to be not worth it, with the better logitech g700 coming out and answering all the question people had with the Mamba. Like for example, its huge dock. Why would anyone pay more or chose the mamba over the g700 when it is clearly better? it is a single sturdy shape like you desire too.

Actually, I used to own a Logitech MX518 and G9 as well as a Microsoft Sidewinder before my first Razer DeathAdder.

And what makes the G700 so "clearly better" than the Mamba? More DPI? 5,700 vs. 5,600, that's pretty much negligible. More buttons? I have a hard enough time trying to figure out what to do with 7, let alone 13, so that doesn't benefit everyone. And I don't see why everyone complains about the Mamba's dock...that thing is tiny, much smaller than I expected it to be. I can slip it in my pocket or my backpack, no trouble.

tl;dr - I'm happy with my Mamba, and I've tried other things.

Well, yes you addressed how the g700 is better and that is pretty much it, but they are pretty important changes to alot of people out there, one thing we should consider is the price factor again, the Mamba retails at $120? how about the G700? my guess that it would be cheaper.

with docks it's enough to say:
when you take it out from your pocket or bag and plug it into the notebook,
at first glance people would think you're plugging the mouse itself LOL
