I did some searching and didn't find an official information thread on the upcoming Oculus Rift Pre-Order which should be open anytime in the beginning of 2016. This shall help us all with the ability to jump into the queue as quickly as possible and share our experience.

For the full Rift experience, we recommend the following system:
Video Card NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
CPU Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
    Memory 8GB+ RAM
Video Output Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
USB Ports 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
OS Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

Just preordered it and total after tax and shipping was $679.32 in CA.
I faced lot of loading issues while trying to order it.
It kept saying “Something went wrong. Please Try again.”
When I kept trying and finally got a confirmation, I checked my CC and found out that I was charged 4 times.
    So be aware.

Wow $600 + shipping.. And customs for some of us. That´s abit more than the expected $300-400. Golden opportunity for Vive to slip in $100 lower.

Right their tool doesn't seem to account for SLI or mobile cards at all which doesn't surprise me so I would revert to the 3dmark score requirements of 9271 , a single 980m can reach this.

Also keep in mind you are charged when your order ships out, the order page said March so FYI.

Mine is expected to ship in April.
When I start the preorder process, it said March but due to those failures, it was pushed to April.

Moving discussion over here from the PM870 thread...

Nvidia Gameworks VR is for games / apps development, Nvidia added "VR SLI" support, it's not standard SLI - it's a dedicated render GPU per eye. AFAIK nothing is currently available that runs using Nvidia Gameworks VR.

    GameWorks VR
    https://developer.nvidia.com/virtual-reality-development

"For game and application developers GameWorks VR supplies the following features:

VR SLI provides increased performance for virtual reality apps where multiple GPUs can be assigned a specific eye to dramatically accelerate stereo rendering. With the GPU affinity API, VR SLI allows scaling for systems with >2 GPUs. VR SLI is supported for DirectX and OpenGL"

You could ask Oculus if their current pre-order being delivered for development supports Gameworks VR SLI with the current Oculus SDK.

    https://developer.oculus.com/

I got the impression the Gameworks VR SLI is a future, not supporting the current Oculus pre-order, and interestingly, reading the Nvidia VR SLI text again slowly - it says for systems with > 2 GPU's... so that would be 3 GPU's, right?

Its enabled if the developer allows just like SLI pretty much so new titles will take advantage. The consumer just has to realize what titles do offer this and ones that do not may not run a fluid. Still a single 980m is about the same as a 970 desktop and can meet the min requirements. The oculus will not be for every game or experience.

    From June 29th about VR 1.0 = http://www.roadtovr.com/nvidia-takes-the-lid-off-gameworks-vr-technical-deep-dive-and-community-qa/

VR 1.1 is now released and will continue to improve.

The deep dive lists potential SLI methods, and at least one solid datum, "while staying above the headset’s 90 FPS refresh rate"

That's 2x 90 fps => 180 fps for a single GPU to render until a developer uses the Nvidia Gameworks VR DirectX plugin and one of the GPU assignment schemes mentioned in that deep dive.

    It's all pretty exciting :)

No it cuts the mustard well, I was just meaning if for some reason it create an excuse to build a new ITX single GPU machine I can't argue with it :)

At this time I am so happy with the Sky X9 that its unreal, its performing at a level in the past that was only the P570wm area.

lol funny I'm actually debating selling my desktop. I should probably keep it for Pascal but then we will get Pascal on the P870DM as well.

If only 6-cores came to the Z170 platform then it would be a much easier decision.

Note that any laptop that has Optimus is likely to NOT work with the Rift. You really need a GPU that is outputting directly to HDMI, not going through Optimus switching craziness.

The new spec requires 3x USB 3.0 ports + 1x USB 2.0 port, as I recall previously it was 2 USB ports with 1 needing to be powered.

Oculus Rift Minumum PC Spec Finalized
Four USB ports required; Launch units include Xbox One Controller, standalone sensor, and Oculus Remote.
    http://www.gamespot.com/articles/oculus-rift-minumum-pc-spec-finalized/1100-6433566/

For Rift to perform at an optimal level with your computer, we recommend that you have 3 available USB 3.0 ports and 1 available USB 2.0 port.
    https://support.oculus.com/hc/en-us/articles/214825888-USB-compatibility

1x 3.0 USB port for the headset
1x 3.0 USB port for the 3D Positional Tracker
1x 3.0 USB port for Oculus Touch (available at a later date)
1x 2.0 USB port for Xbox wireless controller

For now you can run with 1 less USB 3.0 port as the Oculus Touch isn't shipping...

Also, I haven't tried it yet/recently, but can't you bind the Xbox One Wireless controller with BT on the PC, so down another USB 2.0 port?

So are we back to 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 powered? :)

Update: Nope, need the proprietary Xbox One wireless adapter, just like with the Xbox 360 wireless controller on the PC, so back to needing 2x-3x USB 3.0 and 1x USB 2.0 ports.

Nope. XBox 360 and Xbox One controllers both require their own proprietary receiver to be used on a PC. You cannot bind them via Bluetooth.

You also can't bind them cross-controller-platform. Which means an XBox One controller requires an Xbox One wireless receiver (can't bind it to an Xbox 360 receiver).

Darn, I still have an Xbox 360 PC receiver, I guess I am going to need to find the Xbox One equivalent.

Either way, that Xbox One wireless receiver takes up a USB port on the PC...

Ya that's great they did that for their supporters and more companies should do the same. I supported a company Neptune pine for a long time to find out they sold their product to Amazon before their support backers that paid. It left a bad taste with me for sure so to see a good thing that can happen was a great moment.

The major change are the screens which are custom with a res of 2160x1200 @90hz vs 960x1080 @75hz on the dk2. The new res will provide a much smoother and wider experience.

There are several other changes and the price is not bad for what you are getting with cv1.

The Consumer Model (CM1) uses custom-manufactured 2160x1200 @ 90Hz OLED displays. They will have darker blacks, infinite contrast ratio, much lower latency, and higher refresh rate. It should also dramatically decrease the chances of nausea, which I'd consider to be a must-have for a product whose primary purpose is to introduce next-gen VR to the public (and not a product that is trying to make a profit).

That tech is impressive by itself... but the fact that it is custom-made means it's much more expensive to manufacture.

And, you're getting a packaged, fully assembled unit that comes with support. Includes headphones, and an Xbox One controller.

Those "extras" like packaging, support, headphones, controller, etc only add a negligible amount to the cost... around $100 or so. the main cost is that the screen panels are FAR FAR superior to the DK2 model.

As to cost, it's incredibly inexpensive for what you are getting. :)

I have personally paid way more, and been part of projects that have paid many $10k's-$100k's for what you are getting for about $2500 overall.

It's revolutionary and long overdue. :)

Yup. $600 is absolute peanuts compared to what you're getting... especially for two custom-manufactured low-latency high-DPI 90Hz refresh rate OLED panels. Have you seen how much of a premium cell phone, HDTV, and computer monitor manufacturers are charging for even volume-production OLED panels?

Oculus is selling the Consumer Model 1 (CM1) hardware at cost (one of the benefits of being owned by Facebook); because they are more interested in spreading consumer demand for VR, than they are for turning a profit on this first batch of hardware**.

The way to look at it is this:
The Oculus Rift CM1 is essentially a high-end gaming display. And $600 is not unreasonable at all for high-end gaming displays these days. Any combination of 27" 1440p / 34" 3440x1440; G-Sync / FreeSync; greater-than-60Hz refresh rate displays; will all easily cost you at least $600.

The Oculus Rift CM1 is also being SOLD to the same people that would spend $600-$1200 on a high-end gaming display, because the buyer also needs a decently high-spec gaming computer to run this. The Oculus Rift CM1 is *NOT* being sold to the mid-range bang-for-your-buck gamer running a GTX 960 / R9 380X on a 24" 1080p monitor.

** - And no, they certainly aren't selling the Oculus Rift CM1 at cost out of goodwill. I'm sure there's a strategy behind it... most likely to seed the market with VR platforms as rapidly as possible (by keeping sticker price as low as possible), so that they can reap the rewards later when they make money off of everyone using Facebook VR (or whatever it will be called).

That strategy is the same as gaming consoles, shaving razors, and cheap consumer laser printers. Sell the base hardware as inexpensively as possible; and make your money later on through cartridges / refills / software that people consume as they "use" that base hardware.

Yeah. The short version is that this new generation of vr is absolutely incredible, and un-comparable to the last consumer VR that was available in the 1990's.

Everyone who has used the oculus rift thinks its incredible, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend spending $600 to those who can afford it to buy the CM1

With the vive announced with a starting price of 799 it seems VR will not be as cheap as many intended it would be. On a good note a new test was released by Steam which is much better than the one released by Oculus.

It can be seen and downloaded here http://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/

I ran a couple of tests to show you below. NOTICE its states 980 which is prob due to the fact I use modified drivers.

Stock 980m / Looks like it will work but may need a small bump so check the next pic.
    20160223_SteamVR_Test_980m_Stock.JPG
    980m + 100 / + 200 (easy overclock and meets all expectations)
    20160223_SteamVR_Test_980m_100-200-oc.JPG

980m +200 / +300 is an OC I use while playing non SLI supported games so stable and no additional voltage needed (Prema Vbios) well into green. I wouls say we are VR ready.

Lol ya is that how the egpu dock reads? The guys at oculus seem so short sided with laptops it's almost comical.

Oculus Rift Lives Up to Name, Reactions Split
"The $600 Oculus Rift started shipping on Monday, and the virtual reality headset has garnered mostly positive reviews. With several other options available by year's end, including the HTC Vive and Playstation VR, is it time to adopt early or patiently wait?"

My order was complete probably 4 min after opening and I had my confirm email 6 min after and all I have received is a notice that it could be shipping within 1 to 4 weeks. On a side note I am seriously on the fence to cancel as there doesn't seem to be a whole ton of performance improvements and the exposed FOV isn't looking to promising. Considering I normally wear glasses I already use a 21x9 1080p/1440p gsync monitor with trackIR and the Rift touch controllers will be extra I might be just expecting too much and not seeing the positives. I have used samsung gear VR and the image quality is absolutely horrid and really pretty close to DK2 so I don't want to miss out but really confused at this point. Shew thanks for listening lol

No matter what we get, unless we get all of them - all the time, we are going to need to switch to the "winner"'s, and upgrade soon anyway - HDR, Pascal, onboard Polaris, who knows...

I have gone through this several times, and still have one from the early 90's sitting in storage somewhere, when the company failed as it didn't catch on as hoped. It was still fun for watching video's :)

I am waiting for HDR screens + Pascal before hopping in this time - at least that's what I keep telling myself so I won't buy another long term storage item ;)

It's all fun stuff, and I recommend everyone pick one and get one, and tell us all about it, so we can pick the best of the current lot soon

For myself I feel like that's just plain crazy for a product that has been in the making so much and should have been planned out a bit better. If I delivered my product 6 months after my release date and missing key components I would be sacked. I really hope they answer to those who have these estimates but even the ones that pre-ordered with a March shipment on the 28th have not been answered in any way except a note of 1 to 3 weeks.

It would be foolish to cancel, especially if you have a spot in the first wave going out (March 28 estimate group).

Even if you don't want the Oculus, sell it as new-and-unopened on eBay. The ones selling this week on eBay have been going for about $1200-$1300.

I kind of agree and I seriously considered selling on eBay but it doesn't take much to get ripped off and this will be a high attention item. Paypal always favors the buyer unfortunately. I considered wrapping it with buyer guidelines and still weighing my options.
