    Hello,

I have an Acer Aspire 5720. It is my first notebook and the purchase was somewhat of an impulse decision. I bought this summer; it was a refurbished and an excellent deal I couldn't pass up.

I am sort of a silent computing enthusiast so I was a bit disappointed to find out that my notebook actually makes more noise than my desktop (which is virtually inaudible) when the fan is going full throttle.

My issue is fan noise. The fan is not overly loud (though still annoying), but it is running at full speed often, even when the laptop has been idle for a while. Often the fan will vacillate between on and off in very short periods of time.

I am in Vista right now. The CPU temp is only 40c and the GPU is at 50c and the fan is going at full throttle.

Are there any tips or tweaks to reduce the fan noise/speed?

I may be willing to go to extreme measures like replacing the fan (if possible) with a quiet one. Do any manufacturers even sell notebook fans? I imagine not many, but I'm willing to go that route as silent computing is important to me.

I looked into Notebook Hardware Control, but it does not support 64-bit Windows. I am using Vista x64 and Ubuntu x64. All drivers and BIOS are up-to-date.

Anyway, as I said I am new to this so any feedback is appreciated. Thanks :)
