I have just got a brand new travelmate 8371g, so I thought I would upgade the BIOS and load win7

I loaded the modified bios from this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...n-settings-advanced-options-graphics-fix.html

and then added windows 7, then logged on and added windows essentials.

Next day turned it on and it booted, gone to put my password in and its trying to do it automatically!!!!!!!!!!! what !!! looks like its picked something up.

The ENTER key is also not working! I went into the bios (f2) and I still cant use the enter key, it will not work? I now need to get this working, dont know too much about these laptops so I am really gutted.

Is this a BIOS virus? or has it come through windows? is there a problem with that bios link or have I picked it up.

I need to wipe everything and start again it looks like, but I dont know what to do because of this bios situation and the keys not working.

Any experts on this model please help

    Paul

If you dont know much about computers what on earth made you try a modified bios of all things?

Are you saying windows now no longer asks for a password?

You can always try flashing the latest bios from acer support.

Thank you, I wanted the latest bios, as it was slic, and for fan and battery % charging issues. as I had the full windows 7 files, are you going to help me or mock me? I flased it fine inside windows before I did the install fine, its a brand new laptop but has a 2009 build date, so this was why I updated it.

Everything was working fine, now when it boots it gets to the logon screen and some script is trying to put a password in.

It will not work with my password at all.

The enter key does not work. As said it does not work in the BIOS as well, its like something has disabled the enter key? any ideas please?

The only bios I can see flashes inside windows for the 8371g, again any help and link appreciated.

    Thanks

Thank you for the help, do I just copy this to a USB drive and boot it? or is there anything I have to do to the drive.

I hope i can select it in the current bios (f2) as it wont let me do the save changes and exit in the bios, as like I said the enter key is not working... must be a virus?

You have to make it bootable and then copy the bios.

I have tried everything now, not getting a lot of help? is it because I am new?

I cant find this crisis disk? do I need it? I got some files from HP to make a usb boot disk, but it justs boots to c:\ and the enter key is not working still.

Can someone just give me the files please? so I can make and format a USB fob and it will boot and run the batch file to start the flash? I can find nothing on the travelmate 8371g or how to do this, please?

    Thank you

No one is obliged to answer a question. This is a user forum, where users attempting to give some help for self-help.
If you want 100% useful response, then contact Acer technical support.
This IS the only solution if the advice you were given did not solve you problem.

I assume you have provided the DOS boot files as requested by the software, and you have also chosen the correct boot option when prompted.

Yes I understand.... Yes I provided the files and the boot option is right, do you know if anyone has the files to do this correctly, it looks like I am doing it wrong.

I find lots of posts on other models, stating in easy terms step by step what to do but not a lot on this unit.

Do you have the files and instructions ?

    Thank you

    Hi again,

I would simply re-flash stock Bios from Acer. If it does not work in Windows environment, try in plain DOS.

Step 0: Check if you are able to enter the Bios setup or invoke the boot menu (on my 1810TZ, I need to press F12, I don't know if this applies to your laptop also. The manual should answer that question)

Step 1: Create a bootable DOS flash disk. Download the HP USB Disk Storage Format tool and install it. Log in as user with administrative permissions and run the utility. Don't forget to check the "make DOS startup disk". And of course you need to provide valid DOS files. Best source is a boot floppy created on Windows XP using the "format and make DOS disc" option.

Step 2: Download the latest Bios for your laptop and extract the archive. There should be a folder named "DOS". Copy its content onto your flash drive.

Step 3: Boot your laptop from the flash drive. Type "F" (without quotes) to run the Bios flash. Hold your breath and hope all runs fine.

Hello and thank you again, problems!!

Hello I have all the files and have tested it on another computer, booted the usb stick, and typed DIR all looks ok.

On the travelmate 8371g the following keys W E R L and Enter are disabled?

I dont know what to do, I cant type F as the enter is disabled (bios virus?)

What is the full sequence on this model I have to flash the dos bios.

is it battery out or something? then power?

Any help please to get round this...please!!!!!!!

    Thanks

    Hi,
    Good.

Bad keyboard perhaps? This would be a job for acer support.

You may try this: switch NumLk on
Enter: press Alt + 013 then release the Alt key. I am not sure if you have to keep the Fn key pressed also (this is a tleast the case with my Dell here).
The other letters can be simulated the same way: ASCII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (must be entered with three digits, first one is 0; example F= Alt+070)
Note, the numbers must be entered using the (virtual) numeric keypad, not the normal numeric keys on top of your keyboard.

In case there is an autoexec.bat file on your bootable stick, you can simply copy the few lines in f.bat to the end of the autoexec.bat file.
This should then cause automatic flashing the Bios. Might be dangerous.
