hey everyone... so I bought a AMD Turion 64 Mobile TK53 x2 1.7ghz 65nm in ebay for 43 dollars ship included.
... bios says "amd unkown processor" my currents bios 3.10a

Windows XP sp2 picks up as amd unkown processor as well I installed amd drivers installed driver fine but still says unknown as well... the CPU run full speed with battery or plug. i guess waste 43 dollars for nothing back to single core again.. or unless someone has solution.

I have question. I know this thread is old.
I was searching for my question
andyasselin said "bios you have on laptop does.nt have microcode to identify you cpu corrected "

Now what exactly does mean by this? can I still use this CPU just install driver from amd even if BIOS does not have info about it?

because I kept reading aspire 5100 does support TKX2
I would really love to use this cpu so fast man.
    here the model:AMDTK53HAX4DC
is there beta bios update from acer for 5100?
oh yeah.. there guilde somewhere in the forum a user posted great detail about amd turion cpu the different type and from cheap to high end and what the color of sticker mean etc... Did they took off this guide?

Uhmm, I don't know what micro-code and all is....it must be something that helps the BIOS recognise a specific CPU..!!
I am not sure, if your laptop supports the TK series or not....but it shows up with - Support for TL-50 or higher....
So, have a look at the User Manual - and check which CPUs are supported by the Acer 3690, 5100 and the 5110....All three are almost the same..!! Go for a high end 90nm TL-xx....

Drivers don't help, they are for the OS -- if the BIOS doesn't recognise it....then that CPU is not compatible..!!

What is the original CPU your laptop came with..??

    Ok - The MK-36....
The thing is that your BIOS may not have support for the newer CPUs with the 65nm Architecture....
You need the CPU with the 90nm architecture....

The TK-53 has a 65nm architecture, so it didn't work....

But the TL-50 has a 90nm architecture, so it worked....

So, get any TL-xx with the 90nm architecture, those might be supported by the BIOS....

The best dual-core AMD you can have in that laptop is the 90nm TL-64....

I don't know much about the guide, but you can try this out....

Upgrading the CPU, won't give you much of an increase in the overall performance,
    ( from the TL-50 to the TL-64 (max))....except in CPU-intensive tasks..!!

With the TL-50 installed, go for 4gig memory and a fast HDD..!!

    MICRO CODE

is an update to CPU SPECs released by intel and/or MS and then implemented into the BIOS by your PC manufacturer...
or added to your OS by an UPDATE thru MS

usually an ERRROR FIX or PATCH to resolve issues found after manufacturing... but MICROCODE UPDATES also include info on the NEWER CPUS and often allow a PC to support CPUs it didn't originally support (because they had not been produced at time of manufacture)

    MORE MICROCODE READING

the MICRO CODE is to correct CPU errors or provide CPU specs for new chips ASSUMING THE CURRENT CHIPSET SUPPORTS THEM

as i recall your i940 mobo and maybe the i940 in general does not support DUAL CORE or CORE2DUOs... did you find info to the contrary in my previous post??

    i'm trying to learn myself!!

Forget all of this microcode stuff... mc00 just upgrade your BIOS to version 3.10(latest) and you can use any of the current 90nm(Taylor/Trinidad) or 65nm(Tyler) turion x2s or athlon 65nm(Tyler) Tk series.

The only new turions you cannot use are the just released "lion/Puma" 65nm turion ultra as their sockets (even though still listed as S1) have a different pinout than earlier turion x2s.

    Hope this helps you...

So basically I could slap this TK53 on to my laptop and live happy ever after? I'm going to test this cpu if overheat or power management still works even if unknown processor. IF the cpu work beautifully like TL-50 I have going to be happy man... Like I already stated I do have latest bios update.
    This should be fun.

Yes you can slap a athlon TK53 into the 5100 and it will work just fine (some current 5100s actually come with TK-53s). However I personally would stick to the turions they are slightly more energy efficient than the athlons, but it is up to you. As long as you have the current BIOS from acer it should detect the athlon TK-53 just fine.

Well you were right... The cpu is working nicely for long time. I been putting a lot stress on it extracting etc...
    1+ from me.
