    i have the aspire 7720g (t7500, 4gb ram, 2 hard disks of 250gb etc) for2 years now....
problem number 1) i just installed windows 7 rtm home premium 32bit and the scroll control on synaptics isnt working, is there any newer driver for synaptics touchpad?

problem number 2) i noticed that from the time i updated bios to 1.45 if i work the cpu in the highest level or even in the middle!!!, the temperature rises from 70 degrees (on startup!!!) to 90-100 degrees in 1-2 minutes....i cant work anymore....
yesterday i had to upgrade from vista to windows 7 and i had the laptop directly under the aircondition with the cover open, upside down for 2 hours!!! the two times i tried to upgrade without doing that the laptop after the first boot (so it uses full of power) after 30-40 seconds shuts down!!!)

to avoid shutting down itself i did lots of things, i set the cpu speed to the lower option and i work there all the time with a lot of patience of course...........
the things i did to check if all work fine:
tried to clean the fan...ok...nothing changed, fan has no dust and working properly
changed thermal paste with artic silver 5 on cpu and graphics card...ok...nothing changed, maybe earned 10 seconds before its shutting down....
    put previous bios....ok...nothing changed
i didnt undervoltaged yet the cpu because i want to see what is the fault with the machine...

please i think that all started when i upgraded to the latest bios...is there acer working on a new bios???? is this problem known to them with a known solution????

thank you all for reading this long post...

    Welcome to NBR.

Probably another BIOS issue. I am sure that someone can help here.
Not me though...I never fiddle with the BIOS. Just too risky.

Over and out and good luck

I too have an Acer Aspire 7720g, and use the 1.45 BIOS.

Touch-pad drivers are available here http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers. I use windows 7 64bit and do not have any problems with Vista drivers listed there.

Concerning the temperature, there is some information that could be helpful.

You wrote that the fan is clean and working properly. How much time did pass from the last fan cleaning until now? Is the fan just rotating, or can you feel the air current moving when the fan is rotating? Does it change its rate of rotation? I have seen fans which have suddenly decreased their angular rate of rotation, but appear to work correctly.

Do the heat-pipes get hot? If they do not, maybe there could be a problem with heat-sinks. Are you certain that they are making good contact with the processor?

What is the temperature of the graphics card? If there is a problem with cooling, its temperature should be high.

Which version of BIOS did you previously use?

Search this forum. There should be some information on reseting the BIOS settings. Maybe it will help.

    thank you for your answer.
i used the drivers for vista but i cant work the scroll option....i touch up and down to the right of the surface but nothing is happening.

yes, the fan is clean, i cleaned it yesterday, it was clean, and i blowed it with air, after putting it in, nothing changed, the laptop shutted down like before.
yes the fan is rotating, i can feel the air from the back of the laptop going out. of course i cant remember 1 year ago if the air was more or less, now that i have the problem i checked it....
i see the temperature through speedfan or everest.
when it is 60degrees which is the lowest temp with cpu to the lowest mode and after windows booting, it stays there, if i open opera, or ie or a word document, rapidly rises to 70-75 until it drops down after 20 sec...the fan is rotating the same.
if i change the cpu mode to the middle, the pc starts with 75 temp, and if i use it with normal load, surfing, word proccessing it rises to 90degrees rapidly again. the fan over 82-85, i can hear that it rotates more quickly.
if i change the cpu mode to the upper right,
    a) if the pc is cold, after windows booting goes to 90 degrees and stays there with fan spinning like nuts
    b) if the pc is warm from before for example after opening opera and rebooting there is a chance not to end the booting of the windows and shuts itself down after 20sec. then i have to wait, to cold, boot up again, and lower the cpu to the lowest option.

the heat pipes go extremely warm, i cant hold my finder3-4 sec maximum. yes they are making very good contact with the processor, i double checked it because i changed the thermal paste.

the temperature of the graphics card is 50degreed and colder than the cpu heat pipes.

i think that maybe some diode on the mobo isnt reading the temperature normally, after upgrading to 1.45 bios, or something changed on reading mobo-cpu that causes this problem.

the version i previously used was, 1.35 as i can remember , the laptop came with this version, i changed it to tha latest 2 months after, and to 1.43 i think in may this year.

i could not find any information resetting the bios. besides i tried put again 1.43 back and nothing changed.

    something else?

I can't find any information about how to reset data in BIOS, but this helped me once:

    1. disconnect the battery and charger.

    2. remove hard disk an cd-rom drive (remove the screw to the right and below the battery lock)

    3. pres and hold the power button for 10 (or was it 20?) seconds.

    4. after that while holding down the power button connect charger.

    5. the computer should turn on.

    6. Turn off computer and install the cd-rom drive and the hard drive.

Hopefully this should solve the problem, if it is related to BIOS settings. Unfortunately I can't find the thread where I got this from, but it was on this forum. Some attention from forum members with more experience would be welcome.

As for the Synaptics drivers, did you check under virtual scrolling to see if the scrolling is on?

Do you have any other pointing devices? I have a mouse with some extra buttons and a graphics tablet. Drivers for them and touch pad only work correctly if I install them in certain order.

And by the way, how do you change the processor frequency?

You must use synaptic drivers provided by acer for optimal operation of the touchpad

thanks again for your answer...i will try disconnecting cd-rom and hard drive in one week because i have no time right now...i give exams all the week....i will post if there is any luck...
(the hard disk is under the bottom or near the cdrom? it has 2 hard disks, how can i remove them? shouldnt i remove the keybord first?)

i change the cpu speed but not by a program like at desktops or from bios....i just use the acer power management or the windows vista or seven option in control panel power options, where i put the cpu to the lower mode.

On the right side of the laptop below the keyboard there should have a large sticker with information about the laptop. Under it are the hard disks. Just turn the laptop around and you will see a cover with 2 screw on it. Remove them and take the cover off. Under it there should be a metal object with a circuit board attached to it(unfortunately I have no idea how to give a better description. It is holding the hard disks. There is no need to remove the hard disks from it.) . It should be secured by one additional screw. Remove that screw. Then if the two screws that held the cover in place are to your left, push the metal object to your right. It should slide maybe 5mm and then you should be able to remove it. Do not be surprised if there is only 1 hard disk connected to it.

Also I would like to point out again that I think this helped me once. Maybe the whole procedure isn't necessary, but I can't find the guide which I used when I had problems with BIOS.

Personally i don't see any reason for removal hdd or optical drive. Just unhook ac adapter and remove battery. Hold power button for 30 sec. That should drain any leftover energy stored in capacitors. In my case I have to do this at least once a month.

as i finished with my exams i had a little more time to examine the two problems with the laptop
the first problem solved with the touchpad. i uninstalled the synaptics drivers and installed the alps package.

the second problem not solved. i tried the things you described above but nothing happened.

i tried today something else. i downloaded a program called RmClock, with that program you can control how much voltage you give to the cpu.

i managed to decrease the voltage to 1,125 from 1,250 (which is the default) when the multiplier is 11x and the cpu runs at maximum

the cpu was stressed with orthos 2 minutes at every step, i had no time to decrease the voltage even more, i only tried at last at 1,000 but had bsod after1 minute...
with the program running at startup i can run my cpu at highest mode (according to the windows 7 performance managemenet or according to acer power management) and have at full load a maximum temperature 94 degrees.

i know that running at 95 degrees is not good at all, but when the cpu is idle i have now maximum 75 degrees, before using the program the laptop shuted itself down after a while...

i will run a few more tests tomorrow and if i have something else i will post it here.

OK. This is now getting interesting. I have no idea what could be happening to your processor. It is good to see that the processor is showing expected response to undervolting.

oh yes! you can try it, its related only on the software so the cpu cant be damaged! except the lower temperature , the battery has more 15-25 minutes energy!!!
