Hey all! Got an Acer 2012WLMi upgraded to 1Gb RAM. It seems that the first powerup of the day, my CPU invariably shoots straight up to 100% usage. I then have to shut down (properly if I can, but usually have to do an improper shut down), then power back up and it's fine. It's been like that since the last time I did a recovery from the Aspire 2012 system disc. Anyone else had this? I know the easy solution would be another reinstall but I have alot of things setup as I'd like them, and it would also mean waiting another 3 hours for Half Life 2 to verify itself online!!!

If it's any help I think it's wireless or LAN related. The process thats usually using all the CPU is SVCHOST.EXE. Then when I shut down it says "OnScreen Display" or sometimes "Explorer" is not responding and needs to be shut down. I've swept for viruses and trojans/worms. Got nada.

    Chars!!!

Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (*.dll).
One instance of svchost can be running several DLL's and you can have several instances of svchost show up in your task list at once.

To get a better idea of what is happening open up a command window, type TASKLIST /SVC and hit enter. The resulting list will tell you what each svchost.exe is handling.

Maybe that will help narrow down what's eating up your cpu usage.

I believe other users posted a similar issue. I believe it turned out to be Acer's software that runs at startup that is causing the problem. After disabling the software from running at startup fixed the problem.

Do you remember what acer startup software it was?
I'm having a similar issue, and it's devastating...
When it resumes after hibernation, my ACER often enters a state in which it becomes unbearably slow, with explorer.exe or winlogon.exe or svchost.exe or some other process taking almost 100% cpu time. It stays at 100% cpu for about 4 minutes and 20 seconds, then it goes back to normal, only to do all this again after a couple of minutes, repeatedly.
Given the regularity of 4'20" I'm thinking it's some network timeout weirdness, however, it triggers after coming back from hibernation, so it could be the acpi also ?

Its the Acer Launch Manager. My 3201 has the same issue. I just disabled the program from running at startup. I manually start it now. It will take up to 99% processor usage and slow your pc to a crawl.

I had a similiar problem. I'm not exactly sure what fixed it, but I upgraded my bios firmware.
Does your touchpad also lockup and not respond? If thats the case, then I think your running some software that is polling the battery too often.

what bios version are you running on the 2012WLMi ? I'm on 1.30 and couldn't find a more recent version on the acersupport site.

wow, now I've narrowed it down to the ac'97 audio driver, though I still don't know how to fix it. could someone experienced in troubleshooting sound problems comment my findings? In my case:

    - symptom 1: cpu at 100% only after resuming from standby or hibernation
    - symptom 2: process consuming 100% cpu can vary: svchost, explorer, network drivers, and others, but really they're all masking off something that hangs in the winxp OS
    - symptom 3: this is the real culprit, I found out- when resuming from standby/hibernation, if there is NO SOUND then sooner or later symptoms 1 and 2 will appear - and on my 2012WLMi invariably there is no sound when resuming
    - symptom 4: if there is no sound, the AC97 "sound effect manager" control panel applet disappears - I think that's because the whole AC97 sound driver pipeline is screwed up
    - when one of 3 or 4 above is in effect, dialing through the modem (AGERE soft modem) will lead to symptoms 1 and 2.

The *only and sure* way to correct this situation is to do a COLD reboot - power off then on again. A simple restart won't restore the AC97 sound drivers.
I'm running winxp sp1 with the latest AC97 drivers (June 2005) and directx 9.0b

(added on 07-11-05) I just discovered that if my PC goes into hybernetion while the modem is active and connected to my ISP then the sound drivers will be fine when the PC resumes from hybernation. Go figure...

    S3p,

Is this a system restored using the Acer provided CD's or is it a manual load from a different source? The reason why I ask is that it could be related to Acer's OS load. The Acer Launch Manager was the culprit for most users with this similar type of issue (100% CPU Usage). You may want to try removing as much Acer software from the system and see if it helps.

I also remember seeing an issue regarding the audio not returning when coming out of standby or hibernation for the HP notebooks running XP SP2. There's an update available for XP that fixes this problem. You may want to look into it, but don't kniw if it'll help you since you have XP SP1. Here's the Knowledge Base Article #: 892559.

Personally, if this is a Acer Provided OS Load, I'd wipe the system and reload the OS from scratch. This way, I'll be able to install only the software and drivers I want in the system. I'd also upgrade to SP2 as this may fix some of the problems as well.

    Venombite,

this is an xp pro sp1 from the ACER cd with some driver updates: ATI, intel BG2200, ac97 audio (troubleshooting this problem) and agere modem (ditto). I also converted the file system from FAT32 to NTFS - after checking with ACER support that it was OK. I disabled the ACER launch manager the first day I had this PC. I will look into the knowledge base article you reference. I don't like the idea of reinstalling the OS from the ACER cd, but it may be the only way out - hopefully - from this mess. Thanks

I was afraid so... just for the record, I did get the xp sp2 hot fix files, but the fix can't be installed on sp1
