    Hi there,

I am aware of the two threads that discuss these models but both these threads are now way over 100 pages long and I am a slow reader! :(

I was wondering if anyone could please help me out to figure out all these models.

I am in the market for a netbook-sized pc, but as this would be my main system, I think I require more than what Intel Atom has to offer. My must-haves are:
    -Small form-factor
    -High rez screen
    -8+ battery life
    (performance isn't actually as important)

I was going to just get an Eee until I came across these Acers.

I am set on the 1810TZ because it seems to have the longest battery life - as in it actually does 8 hours on average.

The reviews I read of the 1830TZ claim that the battery is only about 6 hours. Is this true? I would rather a longer battery life then whatever better performance an i3 can offer.

Then within the 1830TZ there seems to be one available with a Pentium U5400. Is the battery life on this around 8 hours?

I just want an 11.6 inch with 8+ battery. Does any other company make such a thing or is Acer the closest I will get?

Finally, does anyone know where I can buy a 1810TZ? In Canada it does not seem to EVER be in stock ANYWHERE!

any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    JR

    Its not that confusing:

    There are 2 generations:
1st gen - CULV Core 2 based - if you need something with enough power for office work on the go, its the ideal choice.
    There are the following models:
1810T - SU9300 - the top of the line (it is only available on some markets)
1810T - SU7300 - pretty good, eats netbooks for breakfast
1810TZ - SU4100 - still good if you are looking for something more powerful than a netbook
1410T - SU2300 model, its single core and probably no longer available

there are also tablet, convertible versions available - the 1820T and the 1825T

2nd Gen - these are all based on the new arrandale architecture, which is much more powerful, but also somewhat more power hungry
There are currently only 2 models:
1830T - Core i5, and Core i3 models...there is probably an i7 model, although I've never seen one yet
    1830TZ - Pentium U5400

The 1810 models go from about 450€ to 620€ depending on the CPU and on additional features like 3G. The 1830 cost about 100-200€ more, so the go from 500€ to 800€

If you don't want to use it for CPU intensive stuff, you could make a pretty good deal by choosing the older 1810T or 1810TZ, you can currently get a fully loaded 1810T with 3G for as little as 620€ incl. VAT and shipping within the EU.

All correct Razor, except for the fact that the SU2300 is a dual core Celeron. The SU3500 would be the Pentium single core.

If you cannot make use of the better graphics card and are okay with the glossy display, the 1810 with a SU4100 or SU7300 would be for you, as it reaches your desired battery life.
The 1830 doesn't reach 8 hours in anything not idle, 6 hours in light usage like browsing/text editing. And 4 hours of intensive video playback (all with the i3-330UM). The U5400 will not make up that much of a difference to reach 8 hours.
However, with the Travelmate 8172 there is an option with a matte display, which I found very appealing. :D

IMO, There isn't much difference in performance between the 7300 and the 4100. 7300 has larger cache, supports VT-x and has some better energy options.
    i7 in a 11,6" laptop? Unbelievable. I smell melting plastics... ;)

I agree. I might add that in case an internal 3G module is wanted, buying a system with preinstalled 3G module is the much better option since the non-3G models are not prepared for adding such a module after purchase.

    Michael

P.S.: you have nearly the same laptops as me :)

The 1410 came in two flavors, at least in the U.S.

    SU3500 which is the single-core
    SU2300 which is the dual-core

    Confusion ensues ;)

    Cheers,
    Kermee

CHANGTURKEY! I did now know this OLYMPIC edition existed!!! I may be a pretty big critic of the olympics but this system looks amazing!!! And on sale at the SOURCE?! amazing! I can't believe this is pretty much exactly what I was looking for - brush metal finish!? OMG!

I read up on the difference between the SU4100 and SU7300 and I am totaly happy with the former! Also for around 50 bucks I can get another 2 gigs of RAM and this thing will FLY!

CHANGTURKEY you just found my next PC! Thank you all for getting back to me!
I can't believe I was about to get an EEE! For a hundred bucks more I get a REAL computer!

LOL! haven't been here in a while and just noticed my sig about my system from 2006! That machine is long gone but it looks like I was after something powerful but tiny forever! I wanted a netbook or a CULV even before they were invented!

Glad I could help. I found it on a website called Shopbot(.ca). I always check there when looking for stuff, as it's like the Google.ca for stuff to buy. If The Source doesn't have it, I know NCIX has it, but I'm not sure if it's the Olympic Edition.

Acer does not make their webpage easy to browse, can someone please enlighten me as to the model numbers on 1810TZ that include 3G from the get go. I am in Sweden but do not have a problem ordering from abroad, in fact i usually do :)

So I ordered the 1810TZ from that Thesource.ca link and am now waiting for the systme to arrive. I have been reading up on some onther CULV models offered by Asus and Toshiba but none of them seem to offer performance like this AND 8+ hours battery. I can return it if it is not to my liking so if anyone can offer a better option please tell me about it!

I do want to upgrade the RAM to 4GB as soon as possible. Does this system run on 64 bit because I hear you can't go up to 4GBs without running a 64bit system. Also does anyone know where I can get cheap ram these days?

The only thing this machine is missing to take me into the future for a few years is USB3 but oh well... I'm sure when that becomes a regular standard there'll be something new everyone will tell me to wait for.

haha... ok so the specs are a bit better than mine... I thought the 1830TZ only came with the new iCore chips!

So now I am really confused! The system you just mentionned has DDR3 and a larger HDD... all good things... but does this U5400 chip still promise 8+ hours battery like the SU4100???

Also, it seems to have some IGP 128mb graphics card - what can I expect from this card? Is this system way better than the 1810TZ I just bought?

Where did you get that price?

Not sure if the chip will get the same battery life last just as long. The graphics are supposed to be twice as good, and I got it from DirectCanada/NCIX. Just google DirectCanada Acer 1830TZ.

    EDIT: Awesome, just received it.

you just got it? I am still waiting and I put the order in last week!

Any chance of you doing a rudimentary battery test while your playing around with it?

    Hi,
the U5400 is a stripped iCore. Just like the SU4100 was a stripped Core2Duo.

The amount of VGA RAM assigned (note we are talking about integrated graphics) does not say anything about the performance of the VGA subsystem.
But reportedly the iCores have a more powerful IGP than their predecessors. And this has nothing to do with the RAM assigned to the VGA chip.

It's supposed to get around 8 hours of battery life. You could check around for reviews to see if it actually does or not.

No reviews of any machine with the u5400 that I can find as of now.

I am not so sure that it does get the same battry life because the u5400 is like an i3,i5,i7 because it runs at 18 watts. The su4100 is 10 watt. There needs to be more information on this chip!

You're forgetting that the graphics are now part of the CPU, hence the increased TDP.

Right. Well I don't know then... if someone can show me the 1830tz with u5400 cranking out 8+ on normal use then I am sold... guess I'll have to wait... can play around with the 1810TZ when it comes for now.
