I have an Acer Aspire 1640Z Notebook. Recently the CD/DVD drive started playing up, it no longer recognises blank discs when I go to burn a new CD/DVD. I first found the problem when I used a different make of CD.

Thought it might be a dodgy disc at first but tried several picked at random from the pack and even tried a new pack but still had the same problem.

Not sure whether this is Media Player 11 related, I've heard people have had other problems with it.

I still have the laptop under warranty but don't really want to have to send it off to get it looked at if it's something simple that i'm missing.
    Any ideas anyone??????

Are they all of the same brand? (sorry I can't quite make sense of your post)
If so, you might want to switch to a different brand of disc and see what happens (or back to your old brand).

They're different brands of disks. I have tried 3 different brands since, so unless it only likes one particular brand, i think its a problem with the drive.

(oh yeah, before anyone asks, i checked that the correct type of disk is used.... -RW, not +RW)

    Any more ideas?

What drive is it and what are you trying to do? You could try deleting the ide drivers. Windows will re-install them when restarted. Could try some different software as well if you think WMP player is the issue.

I guess I could try deleting the drivers, hadn't thought of that - would u be able to tell me which drivers I need to delete? Or at least advise how I could go about finding the ones to delete?

Also thought it might be worth mentioning that I have no problem reading disks. Its just that when it comes to recording onto blanks the software cant see that I have a blank cd in the drive, even though I can see that the system has picked it up when I look in Windows Explorer.

What software are you using and what happens when you try to burn a disc? Are you getting an error message?

Im using windows media player 11. This used to work so i'm not sure if the software is the problem. Im not getting an error message as such. When I click on the Burn To CD tab it normally shows on the Burn Tab that there is a blank cd and how much space is available. At the moment it just says "Insert a blank cd". If I click on "Burn" it ejects the cd from the drive and asks for a blank one to be inserted.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling wmp11 in the hope that this would solve the problem but it hasnt.

Somebody has said that I may be able to download some firmware for the drive - do u know if there is any out there that I can get my hands on?
If not I'm thinking of reformatting the laptop but I only really want to do this as a last resort.
