    Hello all,

Further to my deliberations about which laptop to buy, and coming out in favour of the Acer 1691 wlmi, i cannot find it anywhere.

So, i am now having a look at the 1691 (1.5ghz version). Apart from the processor speed, and the fact that the HD is only 60gb as opposed to 80gb, is it much worse than the 1691wlmi? Comet have none of the 1691wlmi in stock (nor are they anticipating any stock soon), but they have lots of the 1691, at a price of £580 (instead of £691 for the wlmi).

Should i just go for this, or is there a better alternative with a 1.6ghz processor and 80gb hard drive space?

Any help would be much appreciated, as i need to get a laptop soon before i go abroad. (actually looking to buy two laptops at the same time - one for my brother too!)

    Thanks
    Raymond

No. It has a 4 cell not 8 cell battery.

It doesnt have DDR2 ram, it has DDR.

    20GB less HDD

    100mhz slower processor

X600 not an X700 graphics card.

Wait for it to be back in stock. Iv ordered a 1691WLMi from comet last week its suposed to be coming tomorrow. They better not tell me its out of stock, ill give them an earfull over the phone.

I'm just off the phone to them this evening. They have stock in the stores, but there's no word on when they'll get more online stock in. The store price is nearly £60 more than online, and given that i'm going to be getting two of them, that's quite a difference.

Best of luck with your order. Thanks for the heads up about the battery. Did you have any other laptops on your shortlist before you chose the Aspire??

    Cheers
    Raymond

Well the only laptops were the acer 5024WLMi and a sony vaio. I found the acer and the sony too expensive as I lowered my budget.

I just rang comet, and they said I will not be getting a laptop. At this point I was fuming, and had a right go at the woman on the other end of the phone. Turns out, my strong words made her actually look up the order on her computer for real [ the first time she mustnt have looked properly] and she confirmed it would be coming tomorrow. Its another matter if actually does turn up.

I think Acer are real good value for what our paying.

    Hi

Glad I read this thread as I already left another (today) after someone reviewed the 1691WLMi and not the 1691 and I saw Comet online had the 1691 on sale but don't seem to be selling the 1691WLMi.

The comet link above (secret_squirrel_team) was for the non WLMi model which as you say is a much poorer version and non-crystalbrite too I think.

Maybe I'll pop in to a Comet store tomorrow and see what they have!

    Was the WLMi £660?

.. and what OS comes with the 1691WLMi - is it Windows XP Pro? or Home and is it on disk or just installed?

What is the disk partitioned into; 1 or 2? and if I wanted it partitioned into 1 can I do so without re-installing Windows? (I know I can change from FAT to NTFS) but not sure if you can re-partition with no disk (if that's the case)

I assume the Acer backup disks sets the PC back in the original partitioned state (whatever it was).

to tell you the truth all though the crystal bright screen is wonderfull in dark conditions its bad if any outside light reflections hit it from any angle its better in the standard form as I had a 1683 model with the higher specked screen.

as far as the guy above asked about ntfs there is a way to convert it will dig it out of my satellite sites and edit this post at around 12pm gmt today

you can change it using your command promt in xp

    UPDATE-
    _________________ ________________ _______________

First, back up your data. Pictures, Word files, whatever it may be, save it all to something off of that drive/partition. Also, by doing this, understand that there is always the risk of data loss. So if something goes wrong, you are the responsible party. Also, make sure all applications are closed before doing this.

OK, now get yourself to a command prompt. Just Start, Run, CMD will get you there. Now type
    CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS

You will be asked to press Y or N. You will want to say N to unmounting right there and then. You will then be prompted schedule a conversion. Say Y to this. From here, just follow the instructions. Now if memory serves me, you will have to reboot. After the PC has restarted, let it run without you doing ANYTHING. I'd say about five minutes ought to do it. And that should do it for you!

Just spoken to Cardiff Comet and they have a couple left (the 1691 WLMi has been discontinued from Acer) and they are £749 !! The 1692 is only £779 on the web too.

If it had been cheaper I might have gone for one.

    pleased about that?

i'm having a rethink about my choices. might go for a smaller HD capacity and a better processor and build quality, wi th an external HD for storing music.

however, might still be tempted to get the acer if you would recommend it.
