Hi,
Has anyone purchased this unit yet? I need a laptop for DVD viewing, web surfing, VERY light gaming, and the usual productivity applications (MS oFfice). I have some questions for you about this notebook;
1-How is the quality of the LCD? I was very dissapointed by the quality of the Averatec 12.1 LCD I saw in store at Sam's Club, it was washed out and very dependent upon the angle which you are viewing it from.
2-How are the built in stereo speakers? Are they tinny or do they sound OK? I am buying a laptop primarily for DVD viewing and would like decent speakers. Most portable DVD players sound like AM radios, I hope this laptop is better.
3-I am not a huge gamer but would enjoy a game here and there. Does this machine have enough power for some basic gaming? I know that cutting edge stuff will choke it but what about in general?
4-What is the folio style I have heard this referred to as?
5-Finally how long does the battery last and how long does it take to charge?
Thank you very much for any insights you can offer.

Well Screen quality is not as good as Toshiba buts its ok . This unit comes in the same case as that of 4000/4500 and hence use the similar lcd panel
2)The inbuilt speakers lacks the punch for dvd viewing and it only gives low sound compared to others
3)It can take light games but stay away from heavy fps games
and about battery it stays about 2.3hours
Every laptop around this price tag will have same problem or other
But Overall its worth the money u pay this laptop will serve ur
purpose well ...the only thing is u need and extra speaker to enjoy audio
here's another thread were i mention more cons

Thanks for the info.
Does anyone else have any experience with this laptop?
I am still on the fence with this one and need to be pushed over. -
Docprego,
What in particular is keeping you on the fence? Since George answered the questions you posted, I'm gonna assume there's something in particular that is making you question this unit. For your listed needs, this notebook will be enough. You mentioned VERY light gaming, well, any game older than 6 months to 1yr+ should work on this notebook. I'm sure you'd be happy wih this unit, but the best way to be sure is to goto a shop that sells Acers and see it in person.

What I am on the fence about is mainly 2 things:
1-LCD quality. George said " Well Screen quality is not as good as Toshiba buts its ok . This unit comes in the same case as that of 4000/4500 and hence use the similar lcd panel".
2-Speaker quality. George said "The inbuilt speakers lacks the punch for dvd viewing and it only gives low sound compared to others"
I am unsure how to take these 2 comments. I have never seen the LCD on a 4000/4500 unit. Also low sound compared to others concerns me. Will I be able to play back a DVD on the unit and hear the sound from the computer in a quiet room?
Thanks for your help and patience. -
Also would anyone happen to have some pictures of this unit with the LCD on? This might help as there is nowhere to view an Acer laptop locally that I am aware of.
Thank you. -
As Venombite said this laptop is more than enough for the need you specified. i mentioned about the 4500 series using the same case ,itz to convey the idea that the screen is the same used in high end models that cost upto $1500
The speaker are bit lame but but if use headphone external speaker this is gud lapop for u'r needs

Docprego,
1. LCD quality is completely a user preference. It's usually best if you could see the screen yourself if possible. Some people love the "Enhanced" LCD's (XBrite, TruBrite, Brightview, etc...), but some have indicated that it's too bright and they have to drop the brightness back to the standard LCD's brightness level. By doing this, there's no real point in having the "Enhanced" LCD IMHO.
2. Speakers on notebooks are never good. They're small and therefore will produce small sound. This is something to expect for any thin notebook. The larger the notebook, the larger the speakers and therefore better sound. I used to have an HP NX7000 which had small speaker. It produced good sound, but there was obviously a lack of base when listening to music or watching DVD's.
I know this is difficult to get a proper picture of how this notebook may perform, but as I indicated before, it all comes down to user preference. You may love this unit, screen and speakers while others are completely opposite. So, if you can see and feel these units personally, I'd recommend that route. I know it may not be possible where you are, not a lot of local stores that sell Acer products, but more popping up everyday.
