you need to stop some things running in msconfig(be careful).

sounds like your ram is getting choked up with ****e.when i watch movies i switch of anti-virus and my internet connection. just to give my laptop more free ram.
as for the screen blips could be the same thingto much stuff all trying to work at the same time.
    just thinking out loud ;)

    Could be a ram situation.
you can always press "ctrl+alt+delete" and see what is going on with the amount of RAM being used, as WELL AS the PAGING FILE on the HD...

List your specs on your rig- we need that too to help, really.

I suspect you're in need of the usual "microsoft overhaul" -which means time to switch to redhat (linux).
    J/K!
    *chuckle*

But seriously, you could just back your data up and reinstall- that might be where this is heading- most problems with computers using windows is simply that windows ...well... needs to be reinstalled every few months for it to work nice. It really is that simple- or you can work for weeks to try and "fix" the problem and only find out that even top programmers who MAKE THE CODE for windows don't know how to repair ellusive errors.

So while you're getting us some more specs on your rig, find those install cd/DVD's... and make some coffee.

Check your page file usage and the amount of ram (it will sit above your video player so you can watch it) -if it climbs as you watch a movie, and you are not doing anything, and your internet is off or diconnected, you got some problems with cr*p on/in your rig/software. Best option is a reinstall in the end if thats the case.

It will fix the problem usually anyway

    spot on tango ;)

i was just to lazy to type it all out.but a reinstall should be the last option my 4year old travelmate hasn't had a reinstall for two years and the wife uses it 7 days a week.
i think most of the time it comes down to how much junk you download and install and how often you have a good clean out and defragg. ;)

there is two other things (hey thanks hoggie) that ya might want to try out...

1st, those 5102's had a few problems that were people related (vs. hardware) -they were labeled wrong initially even on the website where people got the drivers sooo...

    1) UPDATE your ATI video chipset driver.
    2) DISABLE sleep and hibernation and DEFRAG it...

that might help a lot. Hit us back with what you got as a pagefile and how much memory is being used when you open a movie- by the way, tab the taskmanager memory collumn to show the MOST memory being used item and let me know what it is... and if it changes while watching the movie.

IT could even be that your video app sucks- try the free VLC just to check it out.
( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ -o8.6 something is the latest- they're all solid though) and also AVI video (another free one). Some of the video apps out there really are lame and do some sad stuff to people's machines.

MsMpEng.exe is windows defender which is a memory and CPU hog.
explorer.exe is a core windows file leave well alone. but if you have two explorer.exe's running. one could be a malware
    winss.exe. part of windows onecarelive(junk )

EDIT: you need to sit down and list what is running for us in task manager(Ctrl+Alt+Del) so we can help you some more :)

I had the same problem with my 3680... I installed 2gb of ram and that helped slightly..would not lag as often during video.

What was the icing on the cake was a new 7200RPM 16mb Hitachi 7k200 hard drive and a clean fresh install of Vista. Got rid of ALL Acer proprietary "bloatware" and this thing sccrrreeammms now during video (DVD's play awesome now!)

If you dont want to upgrade the HD, the least you could do is a fresh OS install. Do NOT re-install the Acer BS. That stupid Acer Arcade is the biggest joke I have ever seen. You'd have better luck replaying video's on an etch-a-sketch than with that Acer Arcade software :D

i have non of the acer junk on my aspire now even the useless media center which is a long way from useful more ram is a good idea but you still have too know what is starting up at start-up and which programmes are hogging all the ram and CPU.a good registry cleaner is a handy tool (i use uniblue).
but others my know of a better one. :)

i guess tats all i saw in the processes in the task manager...or maybe im nt gettin wat u tryin to u say...coz wen i was watchin the movie n simultaneuosly keepin a watch on the task manager then it were these 3 processes which consumed the most....soo if u give me an example as in wat should be there or am i lookin in the right plce??...jus let me knw....i also had one more question....it was tat my notebook jus goes blank on its own...is tat also because of a lot of load on the ram or its battery problem??....
