I'm on my second 3100-1718. The first one failed shortly after
I got it. The left button died. The replacement lasted 2+ years
and now it's left button has died.

I've reinstalled the latest driver - no effect.
I swapped left and right in Vista and the logical right (which is
the real left) button still doesn't work.

In addition to the button not working the tap-to-click for the
left button has also gone south. The right button works as
does the touchpad for moving the cursor.

For now I'm running with an external USB trackball but would
like to get the internal one working.

Any suggestions out there, short of a new MB?

Sounds like a duff touchpad assembly to me... worn it out :)
What you are saying is that the left button is dead no matter what you try. The touchpad should be replaceable as a complete item I would have thought separate from the mb.
